I didnt see it in the video, but i skipped the oil cooler part so maybe you mentioned it, but it is important to check for blow by. Get the truck hot and remove the oil fill cap and if it is puffing out white smoke like a steam engine, I suggest staying away. Also, when the truck is off, you can unhook the starter cable along the passenger wall of the engine bay and touch the positive terminal of the passenger battery. The truck will crank but wont start (so long as the key isnt in the ignition) and if the crank doesnt have an even hum to it, I would also stay away. An uneven sounding crank suggests a dead cylinder which means you will likely need a new engine block
I'm a newby to the 6.0's and picking one up today that's not running. I'm buying it as a project to help with a skid steer business i started recently. Looking forward to picking it up and figuring out its issues as I'm a mechanic also but new to the diesel world.
I have a 05 Excursion 6.0 and love it! It had 132,000 miles on it when I got it. As soon as I got it I did the Sinister Diesel blue spring mod, replaced the charge pipes, Egr delete, updated OEM oil cooler, dummy plugs, and coolant flush. Then put on a Sinister Diesel coolant filtration kit and No Limit cold air intake. Also changed out both fuel filters and using Archoil now. Trying to do as much preventative maintenance as I can. Very informative video. 😎👍
I'm still amazed that dually only has 67k miles on it - it's practically new. All good points covered in this video. One thing I believe you forgot to mention was aside from a clogged oil cooler causing high oil temps, it'll also eventually cause your EGR cooler to fail (if I'm not mistaken, coolant flows first through your oil cooler to your EGR cooler) by overheating and subsequently cracking allow coolant to enter the intake. An obvious sign of a bad EGR cooler is white steam/smoke from the tailpipe.
Awesome video youngster LOL. I appreciate the info on the SCT update and the stand pipes and dummy plugs. I've had my 04 Power Stroke for 2.5 yrs. And this is the first time I've heard about those updates and I don't live under a rock. I purchased a coolant filter but it leaked and wasn't a good quality one, so I took it off. I invested in the Amsoil filtration system and can really vouch for how clean my oil is. I have the SCT 4 for about a year and a half and it was another good purchase. Monitoring my oil and coolant is the biggest reason but the tunes are good too. The difference in my delta has been as high as 20 but it never stays there usually when climbing or accelerating it will climb. However it is unusually hot this year. Thanks for the video God bless.
Sounds like you’ll be needing a new oil cooler soon. You can also look into “backflushing” your coolant system … to break away debris from oil cooler to keep oil/coolant delta temp closer to each other. 20 degree delta is past due for fresh oil cooler… go ahead and do the oil cooler with STC fitting update and I think you’ll be super pleased!! Thank you for watching and god bless
I really like the 6.0 even tho people say that they are bad but I dont care I think that this video is a good thing to get people on the right track. And when I go look for one I will look back at this video for reference.👍
I am in the process of buying a 2003 excursion which has had a ton of upgrades including F250 front end dash and doors. Your video will help me avoid wasting $30,000.
Going to look at a Ford F-250 6.0 in a couple hours..guy said he took really good care of it and never really put it through hard work..much rather a show truck. He’s selling it for $10,900. 157k miles. Wish me luck.
@@tysprojects2571 no I didn’t end up buying it…knowing 6.0s and how how they can shit the bed whenever they want it would’ve been irresponsible for me to buy to one since it would’ve been my first vehicle.
The updated standpipes have the rubber sealing O-ring as the old ones, but come with the white “backup” ring to help prevent blowouts. That is what you are calling Teflon.
Another eay to test blow by or blown head gaskets is take the oil cap where the oil goes into the engine flip it over and put it ove the hole if stays on there then ur gaskets r good
Need to verify the bedplate is not leaking on any 6.0. That is practically an instant 7000 dollar repair. The engine has to come out and you mine as well bulletproof at that point. Ohh and it is a common issue.
I have been looking at a 06 F350 with 199k miles. The lot says it's been bulletproofed with everything being rebuilt with a huge lift and tires....they are still asking 21k. They said it has 20k worth of upgrades... I am guessing I need to run?!?
got my 06 f350 with 167k on it with all the service records 5k oil change intervals ect for 16,700. Id focus more on service records when purchasing these older trucks and then have it bullet proofed so you know its done properly, a lot of people seem to have different ideas of bullet proofing.
I appreciate the video but the 1st thing you went over talking about the head gaskets and cap failure at 16 pounds is not going to be Blowing your head gaskets necessarily at all you're much more likely to blow a hose if you exceed 16 pounds not a head gasket.
Good point brother , also can cause cracks in the degas bottle ... gets hot and cold so many times and plastic deteriorated and becomes delicate. Had that happen on both my 6.0’s. Thanks for the comment !
Also something that is very important. The replacement D-gas bottles markings are wrong. The minimum line is actually the full line. If you overfill it it can be too much pressure and blow the head gasket.
Depends on your budget. If you want to do the bullet proofing yourself then buy the 135k one. If you dont want to pay for that then buy the bullet proofed one. Hoped this helped
Yeah I kind of agree with a dog above here^ , all depends on budget and also price. I’d you can get the stock one cheaper plus it’s got less miles, if the head gaskets are good you can bulletproof whenever you’d like and have a motor that was put together by ford not some random technician... then choose what 6.0 machanic you want to bulletproof your truck. You get to choose who tears it apart rather than buying a truck someone else chose that. My personal opinion is I would take a stock 6.0 over a bulletproofed one anyday. As long as it has good head gaskets.
@@JUSTINHAWKSMITH thanks for the advice. That’s kind of what I was thinking too. I want to buy stock then do an egr delete and oil cooler just to be safe. Then really bulletproof later on down the road.
Your most expensive part of the bulletproof is the head gasket since it requires removal of heads and possible machining of the surface (on top of the cost of studs/gaskets etc). If you're mechanically inclined, doing the EGR/Oil Cooler/Coolant Filtration/Blue Spring is fairly easy. I'd get a quote from a reputable shop to see what would be a better value for you. Also keep in mind that there's a high chance that an already bulletproof truck has had a tuner run, so it might be in worse shape than the stock one.
Failed head gaskets it’s still sadly common even on “bulletproofed” trucks. If your pushing coolant you more than likely have blown head gaskets sadly.
Yep. They can push cylinder pressure into the the cooling system via a blown head gasket. The best way to check is to "T" a pressure gauge into the small line near the degas bottle. Drive the truck until it reaches operating temp. Watch the gauge. If it exceeds 16psi. under a load then your gaskets are roached. 16psiis when the cap relieves pressure and you get coolant being "pushed out".
Great video I appreciate it any advice on a motor I had built and the flywheel keeps breaking. It's all stock just a delete was put in and the motor rebuilt no programmer no nothing why is it keep breaking the flywheels I've been trying to figure this out different transmission as well.
I have a 6.0 I got it had it two days and the egr cooler blew ever since then it has ran like garbage it has a massive loss of power and black smokes a lot and it sounds like the turbo is bad
Great motor gets a bad rap from people hot roding them and expecting nothing to break also throwing huge tunes and pushing the motor past what a normal truck would do with no updates
I just started getting an oil leak on the passenger side of my 05 f250, at the back of engine near the front wheel. Any idea what it might be? Few droplets after I park it.
Could be a number of things you probably figured it out already but oil pressure sensor or turbo drain or filter houseing all those are on front side of top of motor
i traded my 99 7.3 fairly stock except intake manifold and intake rebuilt 80k. got a 2003 6.0 fully bulletproof stage 2 turbo 175/75 farm boy injectors and fill mishimoto cooling system. was this a good trade ? the truck had “a blown rod” turns out to be a ipr valve
I think you are being overly modest about your 6.0L knowledge. I would say after being a 3x 6.0L owner, and doing much of your own wrenching, you've become very knowledgeable. I've never owned a 6.0L, and haven't really been serious about buying one, but I've watched several DieselTech Ron's videos, he's definitely the Man. It would have been nice to hear more detail ($, level of difficulty) for your coolant filter upgrade. Also, you didn't mention anything about the FICM, isn't that another, common fail point of six-ohs?
Yes, definitely the FICM. Have to check and keep batteries healthy so as to not get low voltage that will damage the FICM. BTW, unless you are fairly wealthy YOU HAVE to be a mechanic to keep an eye on everything that could go wrong to keep from blowing the motor. I had a 2003 first generation 6.0 I used for transporting. Went all over the country and border to border, and coast to coast several times and talked to every mechanic that would help trying to figure out why it was blowing blue smoke. Right before I screwed up and lost the truck I figured out that it was the wiring harness inside the transmission shorting out. I tried everything under the sun prior to that. But, once I changed that harness it ran like a brand new truck. Just shortly after that though I screwed up and accidentally put a little gas in it and blew the injectors.... because I didn't have the money to fix it I had to trade it off for a beater to get home to get back in my other truck to be able to keep running and not lose my business. Sad, sad time in my life when I lost that truck. I was just learning to love it.
CheckYourBuffer a lot of trucks with blown head gaskets will only push coolant under medium-heavy duty use or with a tune. Some will have blown head gaskets and won’t push coolant if they’re not blown bad enough and stock tune is in place.
I didnt see it in the video, but i skipped the oil cooler part so maybe you mentioned it, but it is important to check for blow by.
