0-60 took like 11 seconds, damn, that is much slower than other 2.0 150 something hp cars from the same size or bigger.
@Juan Suarez I have a Forester 2.0 na, barely 158 HP and it definitely faster than this, it's heavier and also AWD system, and older... It's ok tho, not everything is 0 to 60 times that's only one thing that would be a plus to have.
@@neometalx9
That HR-V is going to be a scary car for freeway merging. No chance of matching speed with a hole or catching one with acceleration.
This car is so cute now. Honestly before I thought it was way too small. But now it’s the perfect size, and I honestly adoreeee this new design both inside and out. Tho I do look the inside more than the outside haha!
*like
Such a great review to point out many perspectives many other reviews don't! Much appreciated!
Substitute Topher sounds just like usual Topher
It's his clone.
They are both amazing
The car looks perfect and very desirable for me, yet the deal breaker would be the 13 second 0 - 60. It honestly looks terrifying.
2.0 L NA with CVT 🙂
It looks good, awesome from inside = BUY !
Average folks doesnt cares much abt 0-60 timing.
@@FoodKart average people 100% care about good acceleration and merging speeds, exp if they merge onto highways alot.
Nobody is saying this needs 0-60 in 5 seconds, but 13+ seconds feels dangerous for many drivers.
@@Ducc1x Slow 🐌 agree. BUT, dangerous ? Enlighten pls
Stopped at a yeild merging onto a highway where people are flying up on you at 70-75 mph.
Count out 13 seconds and imagine how quickly a person going 70+ mph is going to come up on you even if they are far away.
Even on regular roads turning onto to it and having to accellerate up to 50-55, all it takes is seconds for a distracted driver to fail to see you're not going at the speed limit.
Yes in these situations your tech not at fault, but it doesn't mean that your slow ass car isn't creating those situations.
This car is in strong need of a hybrid option with the middling MPG and speed.
Europe is getting one while America will be lacking for another 1-3 years. This is what happens when governments are too nice to car companies.
Iirc Canada offers the hybrid
its always a nice surprise running into substitute topher
A lot of people are complaining about the engine performance. Let me ask you why do you need such performance from a grocery getter crossover? But then again those complaining about it aren't the types that are going to buy it anyway.
If the desire is to push people to EV's, a disturbingly slow 13sec 0-60 from this heap is a good start.
Living in the middle of the country, EVs don’t make sense for those of us who live hundreds of miles from major airports and cities, etc.
Smart huh? Swapping out a gdi vehicle with an even more unreliable power plant(hybrid/ev). Hybrid and ev SUV’s have had the most consumer complaints and reports
@@bigredmatt1011 that also brings up another problem: the infrastructure isn’t good enough, unless you live somewhere like Los Angeles. Going all electric right now makes no sense until theres more charging stations and more affordable options come out.
@@bigredmatt1011 You would be supprised. I know someone who lives out in the middle of nowhere (130 miles to the closest major city, and a 20 minute drive on the highway to get groceries) and their only car is a chevy bolt. They absolutely love it, and it gets them everywhere the need just fine. Sure, when they drive into the city to visit family they have to charge once they get there. But that isn't an issue for them since they just plug in at the garage.
@@richardledesma1675 where do u get that stat from lol… maybe teslas… but mainstream EVS and hybrid have proven to be WAY more reliable in consumer reports tests. Not to mention hybrids and ev are the future and so much smoother, quicker, and more environmentally friendly than ice cars.
Great job substitute Topher!!!
Your foot taps are so elegant when entering the car my good sir.
Good review, backup Topher!
I appreciate the Top Gear "get in and out of, you know" reference 😂
That naturally aspirated 4 cylinder is probably one of the most reliable engines on the market.
It’ll reliably have you worrying about getting plowed into from behind on the interstate, for sure.
It’s absolutely tuned for extreme reliability and durability. I bet these will last 500k miles +.
@@grimdarksandwich66 If you're blind and have condition, u will definetly get plowed from behind.
@@silvinjo654 if you’re worried about the rear view mirror because of poor acceleration, it’s the CAR that has the condition.
@@grimdarksandwich66 Sure. Its weird how I never had a problem with 1.6l diesel 120hp CR-V when I need to move it a little bit into faster traffic, tho, you're thinking like you're getting onto HIGHWAY when ur fully stopped, so u need to accelerate from 0-60 in 2sec so u wont get rear ended, oh yes, we all have hundreds of thousands of dollars for fast cars.
This thing is so simple, very pretty design as well, I love the materials as well! The door card deigns seem very rugged and kid friendly! I was planning to obtain one in the near future as a family car but the lack of rear vents is a downer due to scorching summers in Southern California. Don’t want to put an infant back there like that
I was thinking the same thing. I’m also in SoCal and I’ve experienced some baking summers here. It’s small enough that maybe the front vents can be sufficient for rear passengers, but I’m still disturbed that Honda didn’t put rear vents even in the EX-L trim. I’m assuming it has under-seat vents, but will need to check for myself.
I’m confused by Honda’s thinking with this vehicle. They put the effort into designing an attractive and interesting vehicle. Then they gimp it with a weak engine and missing some key features like rear vents and a rear center armrest.
@@adamesd3699 I agree dude, they knocked it out the park with exterior design and some interior ques, but the thing you stated are a bummer and will have me looking at other Japanese manufactures in this segment. This engine will be reliable due to not having higher combustion chamber pressures due to a turbo, but it is fairly large and look like it gained weight so this thing will be in need of torque. atleast the earth dreams 1.5t, or even an older k24. As of now, the hr-v is sadly behind in practically in the compact suv(cuv) segment
Yes, every car should have rear seat AC vents, standard. We are in global warming after all, right?
@@adamesd3699 any slower it would be dangerous
The upcoming CRV refresh later this year is what you’re looking for. It should have the auto lift gate, rear vents, and more premium features.
Awesome analysis
Honestly it's great for it's perspective buyer spacious smooth and stable in straightline while easy to drive thru the corners handles well and builds up moment smooth acceleration and responsive enough because the average person in not pushing it hard
Exactly. Average drivers never push their cars hard on the pedals.
I wonder what elevation he's at for this video. I was expecting it to be slow but not that slow.
Man, if this is what the new pilot/passport/ridgeline will look like inside, I'm here for it. The interior is a huge improvment. Hopefully, the improved safety tech (better LKA, and ACC w/ low speed follow) carry through to the Pilot/passport/ridgeline as well
Hopefully they won’t put a NA 2.0l in those…
@@specialestness a hybrid is the rumor. Hopefully will retain the 3.5 vtech
Newer honda's are rocking similar interior. Most of their cars now have that pattern trim going across the dash with similar info mat systems
I have this trim but FWD. I must say the engine doesn’t bother me. I live in WPB, Florida and for regular commutes to school and work is a pleasure to drive. I’m not into performance just functionality so the tech upgrades were pleasant. Yes I agree it’s a bit sluggish when merging but once you’re up to the speed it’s nice. But I was able to get to 60 in about 9 seconds is the only difference in this video. I enjoy driving it for my lifestyle and needs and I adore my car. This car honestly is for a certain niche of individuals definitely not for everyone.
If only this comment was pinned 🫶🏼🫶🏼❤️
I test drove it this week and also was able to get to 60 in about 9 seconds. It drives very smoothly as well.
Thanks for the great review. I would like to see the HR-V offered in the 1.5L Turbo or a Hybrid model to improve low end torque. I wonder if this reviewer is The Topher's brother? They both act and sound the same.
We just bought a 22 HRV. Magic seats, much better cupholders, and despite a smaller motor its faster than this.
This version lost all the charm and half the utility. The civic platform that “works in its favor” cost it 4 MPG, made it slower, and got rid of magic seats, one of the best features of the car.
All for… what?
Honda stopped because the competition in Europe was far better with atleast 3x the cargo space in a same size vehicle. Unfortunately we don't have any other CUVs that can even hold a candle to this HR-V in the states.
My dad has the 22 hrv i find the front seats very cramped and footwell very narrow. Not very comfortable for a long drive unless your a tiny person lol.
The current HRV is still an amazing car for the price and size. I love Honda design.
@@boygonewhoopdataZZ seltos, Corolla? There are tons others.
I own a 24 sport. I use it for a 20 min commute to work in Alberta where the AWD is amazing in winter ( 8 months a year ). The inside is gorgeous, good feel to it feels like it is a quality Honda build.
But yes, the performance on the highway is atrocious, and after 5 months I had my first real " Ok that was dangerous because the engine won't respond".
If you do not need to pass people, and live in a cold climate this is a fantastic quality Honda vehicle. If you need to make quick on and offs on the highway forget about it.
Just my opinion.
Being reminded of my final Destination fears Along this road😂😂. Same man same
The taillights make me think of the third gen Acura MDX and I really like it!
The rest looks Lexus + Porsche + Mercedes!
I wish the center console in my Si was like it is in this, I could actually use the cup holders and still shift. And I think this looks better and has more storage somehow.
They nailed the styling. It looks good. The interior design is great. Now it needs better sound insulation (wheel well liners, acoustic windshield and front windows) and more power. Great first draft, Honda!
Sound insulation will add weight and the car is already bog slow.
They always nail the styling whether its a Pontiac fiero ,a Toyota HRC or this Honda it's the power train that lags behind always. Sluggish power train sexy styling . always sluggish power train and sexy styling .
The new generation of the Honda lineup looks so premium
I wish they made these cars in all trim levels with AWD and their high performance 6 speed manual like the one in the SI or type R..Honda’s world class manual transmissions make any honda amazing to drive; the reason I specify ‘high performance’ is because of last gen civic sports’ 6 speed manuals tendency for rev hang.
“It’s important research” I’m gonna use that slogan from now on lol
I like how Honda has effort by putting rear passengers A/C vents. Oh wait…
Well, at least they have a center armrest and usb outlets. Oh wait…
Guys, guys… just because it doesn’t have those doesn’t mean it’s bad. At least they improved the magic seat. Oh wait…
@@Kazze1 that was the best part of the last HRV.
If you live in a mountainous area or your commute has a bunch of climb, good luck with this engine.
I saw this at dealer first time I was surprised the seats are like a rock. Felt like I was sitting on plywood. Usually Hondas are soft seats
I really like this new styling my only wish was that the hybrid model came to the US 😞
I
If they just gave it the 1.5 t it would be perfect
or slapped turbo on 2.0
@@skidhvh that's unrealistic
@@Kyle_Duffy Why lol?
@@skidhvh you're asking Honda to put its flagship engine from the Accord and Civic Type R into its cheapest crossover when they don't even put that engine in the CRV. Of course they wouldn't do that, especially if they won't even offer the 1.5t right now.
@@Kyle_Duffy damn, you're right.
You can still install aftermarket turbo tho:/
This new design looks Porsche! Honda must have hired some Porsche designers!
VERY nice!
Great point, looking like a MB GLC which begs the question, did Honda miss out on this by not giving it 200HP and similar torque? They could have cannibalized tons of buyers that way who would have cross shopped it.
Would have bought one if it had at least 180 HP. Granted I'm a more aggressive city driver but I like to move when I push the pedal.
Agreed, but those turbos are worrisome even if it's a Honda.
@@johnnybravo5044
K24....
Looks very nice, but for me it needs more power. Very useable option(s) would be: turbo or hybrid version with the 2.0 as the beginning platform. That would raise the bar for sure.
If they just threw a 2.0T in there with an automatic, they wouldn't be able to keep them on the lot.
@@Freemasonshair
I’ll add to that. The 2.0t WITH the 10 AT.
@@KT_One agreed, they would sell like hot cakes.
@@Freemasonshair that would raise the price too its already in CRV price range
@@f181234 I agree, but if they made that a sport trim and it was top of the line, it'd be "better" and faster than the crv with all the utility.
For me, in person it looks like a Porsche Macan. The Macan for the people! :D.
Haha, I thought the black floor show room model looked like a macan too at first glance-the sales guys gave me a sideways look when I said this Ok maybe similar to Audi’s Q3 if you blink. Still need to test drive this model, as I thought it looked very sporty. Decision is between 2023 HRV @ $33K or 2023 Q3 @ $43K. If I go HRV, it means I get the car AND a weeks vacation at Maui’s Four Seasons when Covid numbers come down…hmmm, Q3 is making it tough to “downsize”.
Yeah, I'm glad I went with a 2022 Hyundai Kona Limited. Not super fast, but 0-60 in about 7 seconds. Good enough to merge into the interstate.
The Kona is like a Ferrari compared to this
My 2002 Prius does 0-60 in about 13 seconds, but it has instantaneous torque (0-30 is only 3 seconds!) Never feels dangerously slow.
This would be fine, in a city. Being at a stop sign with a full car while trying to get onto a busy state highway would be a bit scary. I'm glad they made the HRV a size that makes more sense, but it really needs an option for more power. A hybrid power train would suit it well.
0-60 time only goes to show how heavy cars have gotten
Nice review. I'm thinking of getting this EX-L for my wife but I feel that Honda missed a HUGE opportunity with not adding LED fog lights and hands free tail lift. That would have been nice especially on the top of the line model. Also, they could have added a rear a/c vent and usb ports like the CR-V. So I'm not sure if I'll go with it. 🤔
Did you end up getting one I found one for 1k over msrp.
No. I might go for the 2022. I feel there's not that many improvements to warrant a price hike.
Y’all have to remember where he just did the 0-60! He didn’t do it on a flat road it was kinda going up
Not mentioned is that the new HRV still can’t achieve more than 30 mpg on the highway. We just did a video on a Rogue Sport and despite less HP it surprisingly felt peppy around town and while also slow it never felt it was straining. It’s interior quality is also pretty good. This HRV is a disappointment compared to how impressive the new civic is.
Good- this should help drop the prices of the older, better looking HR-V's
They set it up for a touring model in a year or 2, there are so many features that are not here that will definitely come in the touring
Honda really stepped it up with this HR-V. It was a decent car when it came out in 2016, but I think the interior and exterior design is really nice ~~ Plus, it's just a car that you can haul around from place to place like the Civic. I mean, it's a commuter car, and I think this HR-V works well in that sense. I still prefer the Civic over this, but those looking for a nice car to drive around every day, this might be a good option. I've never driven a car with a continuously variable transmission, but wow that is a slooooowww car. But again, this car is not meant to be a fast car.
13 seconds 0-60 is a road hazard especially with the way we drive in the US
Road of dreams
Will never go back to CVT or any Honda , in this segment get a Mazda and enjoy it.
Exactly
Automakers grow their models to make room for lower end cars to grow and to also make room for future models. It’s rumored that Honda has a SUV 🚙 coming that’s going to slot in between the HR-V and CR-V that is why the HR-V cuts off at the EX-L trim level, to make room for pricing of the new model that’s going to slot above it.
Doubt it
Few minute ago Micah in KBB uploaded a video with same color HR-V in same type of track. I guess you are two in same location may be...
Where were you filming this? If you don’t mind my asking, nice forest scenery
Looks like a mini porsche chayenne with some of those angles on the rear quarter and side view
I wish that Honda would bring back the Fit with that K20 engine and a stick!
Alex on autos is also using a sub to review the HRV, and I must say, I much prefer substitute Topher compared to substitute Alex.
The winding road magazine and the topher are the same people? 😱
If I had the practicality needs that the HRV satisfies, I’d buy a civic sport hatch and a set of snow tires on separate rims (if my concern was inclement weather during the winter)
I wish they gave the car more horse power, its my only complaint with the HRV, its nice that Honda is making the interior look just like the Acura Integra though.
Rumor is that it's getting to 60mph to this day..
I’m thinking that Honda will use the Accord Infotainment from 2022 to present date.
Nice review, does this vehicle have that dreaded “start/stop” system? If so, does it have a button to disable it, thanks
Honda trying to live up to the "slow Honda" memes
This is a nice little quirky vehicle. Good for all around town drives and definitely will sell. Excellent Review!
Here in Brazil they are calling it as the new Civic. And the new HRV is the european one
All Honda had to do was install the 1.5t into this vehicle and give it a hybrid version and that’s it, I honestly don’t know how they thought the 2.0 NA engine was a good choice for this vehicle. 13 seconds to 60mph is downright dangerous.
true
this NA engine will be fine with a torque converter though
cvt is the reason for slow acceleration
@@Moonlight-hq3gi good point but I respectfully disagree. Honda’s CVT is solid and not even a torque converter would improve the 13 second sprint by much. The 2.0 is downright gutless. For them to use this powertrain then the HRV would’ve need to weigh around 2800lbs, otherwise it’s too sluggish.
Maybe cause 1.5 turbos have had problems in the past
@@rocco2 minor issues that have since been resolved
Ugh the euro spec looks so much better
I wonder if there will be support for aftermarket turbo? Love the design and interior but the lack of power is the only down side
Did u catch a fever? Get well soon
I like smooth minimalistic look unlike other models with so many lines, angles and edges.
I could file my taxes before this car hits 60mph
What do you think about the brakes ?
Maybe the FWD variant is the way to go
I like it. In fact they could have used the same vents from the Civic. This is a Civic in reality. Similar to the Subaru Impreza/Crosstrek.
What will it take for Honda to remove the CVT for any other auto gearbox and to turbocharge this engine
I like the look of this, but CVT is a deal breaker for me. I don't particularly care for a slushbox with constant droning and having to rev the nuts off the engine just to get some acceleration. I'm still waiting for Ford Maverick to be available for ordering again. I'd like the turbo 2.0 in the Maverick, I've heard they're pretty good.
Porsche is always an option.
I hope I'm not the ony one that noticed what he said at 3:11 lol
The only thing I'm seeing is a ford escape, I can't be the only one.
Why does Honda believe customers wanted 132lb/tq? How many focus groups pounded the table demanding such a weak engine? Baffles my mind.
As luxurious as an HRV can be.... no lumber adjustment at all, no a/c rear vents, sluggish panic/on ramp performance & lackluster mpg's. Sorry Honda but I'll pass.
Hello, is there preinstalled map navigation in 2023 Honda HRV Sport models?
Front end reminds me of the CR-Z
Man, if only it had more power.
It’s not 13 seconds, that was definitely somewhat uphill. Motor Trend tested it at 9.5 seconds and some others have it in the 8 second range. perfectly acceptable for the class that it competes in.
9.5 I get, but 8 seconds?
thats still too slow for something with as much mass as this
Hi.. What is the sensor/camera behind the touch screen on the dashboard?
This needs a hybrid engine imo
Is the Honda Accord getting a redesign this year or not until 2024 model?
What I learned from this is that the Civic should come with AWD. :D The interior and exterior design is wasted on that drivetrain.
Hmmm, no Touring or Sport Touring trims other current Civc and Accord models.
Increased the power, increased the weight for almost no gain in power to weight on average. If the old one was so severely under powered (as most testers have said, and which kept me away) then what have they done here other than reduce the fuel economy in the process? This seems like a silly update which ends up largely cosmetic. Really should have thrown the 1.5t in this tuned down a touch ending up with more power than this and better economy.
Lets hope the 2023 Accord have that same exact startup chime. Because that ding they have in the 2021-22 is absolutely HORRIBLE
No side camera like the honda fit for line change?
This seems like a really good first new car (for those who can afford it)- but that 0-60 is just painfully slow. I wouldn’t consider it a deal breaker if you use this car for just commuting- it’s not meant to be special (but a little bit more power wouldn’t hurt anybody)
The right choice would have been to have the same one as in Europe: a Hybrid version basically
Good thing the target customer of this car is grandpas and grandmas. At least the european version looks a little bit more stylish
This new HRV is like a japanese take on a porsche macan
