Great video, Solomon, showcasing fascinating, interesting, fun & sometimes heartbreak chess… all with the Hippo to boot! Blitz/bullet addicts who are Hippo fans can relate to the missed tactical shots.. & the wisdom of not blindly following SF’s crazy recommendations, but instead aiming for positions with clear plans. The middle games you uncork are super fascinating… & Bravo that you are back in the competitive arena… testing the Hippo vs titled players. These videos showcasing wins, losses & draws are entertaining & instructive on many levels… great stuff! As a student & die-hard fan.. thxs! Cheers!
For sure! Glad you liked that one! It really just depends if that rook on a2 can get easily tossed around by an opponent's knight or bishop. But, if not, there is really no reason to not leave that a1 square open for our queen!
can you cover some of the hippo games played by gm pavel blatny in the 90s and 2000s? he played hippo a lot in classical format world open. much appreciated
Have you ever heard of the German player Bernd Feustel? He was a pioneer of the Hippo opening in the 70s and 80s of the last century. He also wrote a book about it.
Will do! Thanks for putting Pavel Blatny on my radar. I plan to drop a couple videos of him in June because of this comment. I will shout you out - thanks!
@@TheChessGiant thanks mate. i knew about this great player from hikaru. apparently some fide master mocked this czech gm for playing "such an unorthodox opening" and went on to get smashed in classical games. (can i also mention you have been calling hikarus name the wrong way? its pronounced hee-karu not high-karu. cheers
Glad you liked that tidbit! At the end of the day, computers are a great tool.... but people need to know how to use it properly. Like today with one of my students the engine was recommending a strange and weird move that (just about) no human would ever understand. And I think most of us have run into that, where a move doesn't look bad... but just... weird? Anyways, people seem to play better when there is an actual plan. I do at least.
I’m practicing hippo with bots. At my current bot level I always gain a large advantage, +5 and well into double digits, but then the bot seems to go stockfish and beat or draw what definitely should have been a won game for me!
I found heartening and cause for a good chuckle that on a recent video, someone spoke of the "Hippo Community". The Hippo Community against the world !!!! 🙂
I see lots of videos where a good player says "This opening (insert opening name here) got me to 2200" or 2000 or whatever. As I understand it, generally speaking, openings are intended to get you to a good position for the upcoming middle game battle. In that sense any proven opening will do that. What separates the men from the boys is middle game tactical and strategic skills, and of course endgame ability. I am just now getting into the Hippo. I am a 74 YO high intermediate amateur player, and play other amateurs. This is an exaggeration, but playing the Hippo almost feels like putting your (beginner or intermediate) opponent into zugzwang on move 10! 🤣 It is in the category I like to call "WTF openings"! 🙂
Yep! That is a great point Tom. There is no secret chess opening that will get a player good results, if they can't play a good middlegame or endgame. However, it can help us get a good position and if we know how to work with it, the possibilities are high. I like your approach to this and ya the Hippo is hard to play against! One of my friends has played it against me and I've gotten beat by it
Love the candor and the clear explanations! And the Hippo is a great opening weapon. I love to see good players pressure-test their favorite openings on Titled Tuesday, and how those games go. They are all higher-level games than I will experience, down here in Amateur World. So it gives me good ideas about how to defeat the opponents I come up against.
Glad you liked it brotha! Thanks for watching and more on the way. (I posted a second episode by the way if you are interested. I'll leave the link below just in case. Wishing you a great weekend!) ruclips.net/video/p7iKW2W0uUo/видео.html
Yep! Very similar positions, and sure your opponent can do different things - but most of the time you know how to respond as long as you've stuck with the Hippo for awhile and have grown in your knowledge of it.
Thanks a ton for that brotha!! And ya man if you ever have any chess related questions or chess videos you would like to see, don't hesitate! Here to help.
Yes! One goal of mine is to start streaming in June - I am thinking on RUclips though.... probably not Twitch. Happy you enjoyed the video and I hope to make more videos like this soon!
Thanks John! Hope you have been well brotha. Still want to play another game of (sorry I forgot the name!) The one where you have big pieces and small pieces.
Welcome back, and many thanks for another very instructive Hippo video, Solomon! 🦛💪🏿 It's always interesting to see how the Hippo fares against titled players, especially under short time controls because it really can excell at both speed and classical chess!
Thanks for that brotha!! And ya it is interesting how the Hippo can do well in both settings. Many say it's only for speed chess but in my experience it sometimes (not always) feels like it does better in classical. Not sure, but trying to figure out which one an opening works best in is a good problem to have!

Thanks for that Robert! Your comments are always humbling to read for me! More Titled Tuesday Hippo Defense content on the way 🤝🙏🏼
Yeah, do more Hippo Titled Tuesday content. Most enjoyable!
Will do! Thanks for tuning in brotha.
Cool stuff. I like the idea of lifting the rook and sliding the queen in the corner with the double ram rook/bishop. Gonna try that soon.
For sure! Glad you liked that one! It really just depends if that rook on a2 can get easily tossed around by an opponent's knight or bishop. But, if not, there is really no reason to not leave that a1 square open for our queen!

Performance vs. PC points is the gold! Too many don't look far enough down to see results.

Interesting! Ya bots are a trip....
I do think white has better options then hippo but i prefer play hippo as black maybe i should try more games as white anyway good video 😉
So, awesome. I have been hoping for more games to study. Thanks, CG!
AYY nice timing. Hope you've been well Randy!!
Utter gold informationally to the end game. Thanks for this wonderful post.
Thanks a ton for that Michael! More on the way!
@@TheChessGiant Always, my pleasure.

Ayy that's dope to hear! Apparently Daniel Narodistky said he's been seeing the Hippo quite a bit lately - hopefully it's getting some attention!

As you continue making hippo review videos, maybe start numbering them? Naming conventions ftw
Yes that is a good idea, I will do this for future Hippo Titled Tuesday content!
Is there any tips if my opponent plays the austrian attack what should i do? Btw im black, sorry for my bad english
No worries at all! Yes. Let me send a video that covers just this! ruclips.net/video/DKLZmuhObKE/видео.html
Thats time problem a lot of moves you missed can be found easily in higher time controls
Yep! Lower time control simply means less to calculate which turns into lower precision from both sides.
Its crazy in what positions this openings will get you every single time
Yep! Very similar positions, and sure your opponent can do different things - but most of the time you know how to respond as long as you've stuck with the Hippo for awhile and have grown in your knowledge of it.
Speed run! Speed run! Speed run! (I'm chanting loudly.) Speed run! Speed run! (and hoping for a Hippo speed run) Speed run! (800-2000) Speed...
HEARD! My goal is to start streaming in June. I am thinking on RUclips (not Twitch). And the second I do, you know what I have my eyes on.
@@TheChessGiant So awesome! Thank you in advance. Be sure to give us a headsup!

It's always a good day when a hippo video drops!
The Hippo > Any other chess opening.
I just did a sicilian hippo!!! Humiliation!
Oh shoot! The Hippopotamus Defense and Sicilian Defense ain't a bad mix....

lololol I didn't even think of that 😂
