Hi everyone! I wanted to share a quick update on paper recommendations. I no longer suggest using the Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth Pad. Instead, I highly recommend the Strathmore 400 Series Marker Pad. It's from the same brand, so the pricing and sizes are similar, but the 400 series is much better for blending! I’ve been using it in my online course, and it blends colours almost as well as coated cardstock. The only downside is that it can start to pill after multiple layers, but overall, it's a great option.
What an incredible video. I could tell this took a TON of planning, preparation, and editing time. Thanks for going through all this trouble to demonstrate the different types of outcomes one can expect from acrylic markers. VERY helpful and well produced video.
@@AngelaPanArt It certainly will moving forward. I'm partial to uncoated paper, but I'm just getting started with Poscas and it seems as though smooth/coated/sturdy stock is the way to go in order to avoid tearing up the paper or the nibs.
Thank you so much for this video! I was definitely very stressed about finding the right kind of paper for acrylic markers! Been blaming on the markers but it seems like it’s the paper as well! Thank you so much again!
I hope you'll find the right kind of paper after this video! Some markers can dry up easier than others so both the markers and paper can be causing the problem 😊
Thanks for the coated paper tip! I have tons of it around and this would be a great use for it! I had been gesso-ing my paper, but that took a lot of time. This sounds like a nice alternative!
This is very interesting to watch! I haven't really thought about how the texture and coating affects the material you're using. I remember I used to hate using markers when I was a kid because of the paper peeling and this is why!
😍 Wow I just really love your artwork!!! The way you use your paint markers to draw them is so stylistic! I’ve been planning to try that myself as part of my goal to become a self-employed artist.
Hi Angela! This month I'm practicing with Posca markers, so I'm rewatching all of your tutorial videos. I got a sample of the Legion Yupo medium paper, and it seems to have the same qualities you like in paper. I'm going to get a larger size today - the main difference from the paper you recommend would be the price. This is expensive! But I think it's a good choice. Today I'm also maybe going to get some of these other "synthetic" papers, like stone paper and another one I saw last time in the store - I think it was made from plastic. I'll be interested to see how they work. Anyway, just tossing those out there if you ever wanted to try them!
I just looked up Legion Yupo medium paper and the description looks really promising! I'm gonna have to try it out once I run out of my current paper stock! Thanks for letting me know Rita :) It's so hard finding the perfect paper for acrylic markers!
@@AngelaPanArt Awesome! At the store I saw another paper called Artfinity Synthesis. It seems to be the exact same as Yupo, but at a third of the price.
Here a year later to say thank you for posting this. It was so helpful in my decision-making process. I was so worried about buying the wrong kind of paper for my marker pen sketches.
@@AngelaPanArt I was going to get the ohuhu marker paper sketchbook to layer acrylic markers over alcohol markers but I don’t like the way it picks up the paper so I’m hesitating on buying it
Have you heard of Rendr sketchbooks? They boast that it can be used for all media, including Posca. I know some marker paper is intended more for alcohol markers and focuses on being non-bleeding, but like you said, the coating definitely seems to make a huge difference for Posca. Rendr does not seem to be coated, so I wonder how it would actually stand up.
I've never heard of it, but I can try it out next time I'm looking for new sketchbooks :) Yeh from doing this test I realized you can achieve okay to good results on uncoated smooth paper but for best results you'd need coated paper; for my style and techniques at least :D
For beginners advice, which type of paper is good or better for posca pen that dont peel and also dont cause paint to leak through the back side of paper??
Hi Allen, the coated and smooth paper options are all good for beginners, if you want a more affordable and easy to purchase option, I think the bee creative marker sketchbook is pretty good
Very, very useful review. Thank you a lot for this video. I wonder which of them would be good for combining both acrylic markers and gouache. Which one would you choose in this case?
I think the bristol smooth pad might be a good option for that! Though I haven't tried using gouache on it, but these type of heavy weight sketchbook is usually pretty good for multi-medium :)
This is such a nice and well edited video! Thank you so much Angela. For all the effort and for sharing 🙏🏻 I just followed your Domestika course, ordered paper (again)but was second guessing whether I made the right choices I have some questions as cardstock paper is not a common term in Western Europe. Do you know where to find it? Do you have a translation of the term, perhaps in French? Because your Amazon links don't work in this part Europe and there are no shopping, results when I just Google it. Did you try the very affordable Claire Fontaine Paint On Lisse paper? And Amsterdam acrylic paint paper (in nice sketchbooks) I already spent a lot of money on paper and just ordered the expensive Molotow sketchbooks. But now I see your video I don't have to ruin a new sketchbook again, because it's not what I'm looking for. Mossery ships to the Netherlands 🙌🏼 however shipping is more expensive than the sketchbook itself. Plus your covers are sold out Why looking for good paper is such a quest? 😂
is the coated cardstock paper have a glossy finish? i live in america and am having a hard time finding the 14pt coated paper... maybe it is called something different in the states.
Hi Angela, i’ve been following you not for too long as I’ve just get my posca markers, your videos are really helpful ! Could you tell me for what else is used coated cardstock please ? I’m in France but don’t find any equivalent or don’t know what I need to exactly look for 😒
Hi Marianne! Coated cardstock is a type of paper used for printing business cards and booklet covers, it's coated and much thicker than regular paper, basically you need to find a paper that is smooth and slightly glossy, and that should help with blending :)
Hi. i have purchased artisto pens and all acrylic sketpatch. The paper is not holding up so well unfortunately I think I will purchase mossery paint marker sketchbook. I suppose artist and posca are quite comparable so I suppose its not the marker issue.
Hi Paulina, Artistro markers are pretty much the same as the posca ones, so yeh I'd definitely recommend the paint marker coated cardstock sketchbook :)
This video is exactly what I needed! Does anyone know where we can get the same coated cardstock in the US? I have tried coated posterboard from the dollar store, which is OK but my markers are drying out super fast on it and getting super streaky.
Glad this video was helpful! I wish clubcard printing USA offered the same blank cards :/ I hope you find a good option in the US, if you do let me know too :D
Hi Marissa! I've never had a smudging problem on the coated paper, since they are coated but not glossy, as soon as the paint is dry they won't smudge 😊
rip this is exactly the kind of video i needed, but my style and needs are a lot more different, i don't want any blending or have my lines visible, I want everything to dry flat and evenly, and no blending either :') I don't like paper where the paint sits on top, and you can see the marker lines after
The watercolor paper is too rough and will wear out the nibs on your parents much quicker. I look for mixed media paper, marker paper, and I have used card stock. You can make your own gesso so it’s cheaper but it is so boring

You should try arrtx marker paper pad
I haven’t tried it but I’ve seen videos with alcohol markers but not acrylic markers
Interesting, someone else suggested it too~

This coated paper it's like photo paper?? It's what it shows up in aliexpress, in brazil it's really hard to find good art materials
Hi Roberta! Coated paper is different from photo paper, it should be coated and not glossy. :)
Thank you for that question, I had the same 😉
This was very helpful! TY so much!
glad to hear!
Can I use the other type of Bristol paper( the one for normal marker)
Bristol 400 series marker pad's pretty good, 300 series not as good

does the coated paper smudge easily? i hold my markers in a weird way, i’m right handed but still get ink all over the side of my hand haha

Is coated cardstock paper same as glossy surface?
Hi there! Coated doesn't necessarily mean it's glossy, the ones I mention seems to be either matte finish or semi-gloss :)
