Trinidad in Cuba - a colorful and authentic destination - January 2017

  • The reason I liked Trinidad was the compactness and authenticity of the city. Spanish colonial architecture came out very well. It didn't take long to walk through this versatile and colorful city. Of course, in reality, Trinidad was very different from what Google images initially seemed like. Among other things, we went through this so-called “cultural kilometer” book by Lonely Planet, and only then did this authenticity come out.
It is interesting to see how the cube is not saved in any way, and rather the strong contrasts are deliberately brought out. There are more and more houses in bright tones, in the side streets, water flows along the cobblestones, in the meantime the horse rides in a cart, children with big eyes in dirty clothes run around and play with strange toys. Again, so many contrasts that the camera could sit on those streets and capture moments.
As these Cuban contrasts and authenticity came out especially well here, our society was largely divided. Some liked it, others didn't. Maybe it was really dirty and intense street smells at times, but at the same time there were definitely more pleasant experiences. During the day, touring the city, going to the open-air markets, eating ice cream, or by the sea, the streets were filled with live Cuban music in the evening, the doors of the locals were opened, and the terraces were filled with people. And there's not much to gain from Cuba. When the musicians start with the first few notes, the first few are already on the dance floor. And you don't have to be on stage to dance. Get up, dance.
On our tour we stayed in Trinidad for 3 days and in addition to the city we also visited Playa Ancon beach, which was a very polite Caribbean beach, quite close to the city. Quite an interesting experience was a nightclub built in the cave. And one of the most exciting experiences was, of course, a visit to a beautiful waterfall. This adventure lasted a long time, because first of all I had to drive a lot of land uphill in the mountains and then walk down the deep valley for three-quarters of an hour. But in the end, this is a view of a nearly 30-meter waterfall, which still had a beautiful natural pool with extremely clean water - this will be discussed in the next post. Many waterfalls are located in a national park near Trinidad called Parque Natural Topes de Collantes. We visited the Vegas Granade Falls, quite close to Trinidad.
If you visit Cuba for 2 or 3 weeks, as the average Estonian usually takes on a long-term vacation, then usually Trinidad is the destination that will always be chosen. We managed to get there at a time when there were a lot of people on the streets, a crazy noise, music was played a lot on the streets until late at night, so at times the night peace of our young souls was disturbed.
After a somewhat exciting and extreme Trinidad, we headed to the island of paradise, Cayo Santa Maria in the north. And what the picture and beauty opened up there was just great. You can also watch a video on this post.

Hi there! Thanks! And you are absolutely right. There are clips of Cienfuegos and some other spots. This video is about Trinidad and the way there.

Hi John. The waterfall is located in Vegas Grande national park. But I have to warn you that getting there is quite a hike. At least 45 minutes pretty rough decent to that pretty, hidden place. But it's absolutely worth it if you decide to go there. Local guide would be necessary though. Otherwise you would get lost. Not a place for regular tourists : ) Let me know if you get there!

Same as other places actually. We didn't plan our stay at Casa Particular in front. Luckily our driver which we hired for our whole trip helped us to find us proper stay each night. We just described our demands and price range and he called and booked us proper stay. There are many Casas available in each region, so I believe you will find a proper one. But I suggest that you book your stay with some local's (your driver for example, or the owner of the Casa you currently stay) help, to book the next stay.
I don't remember the Casas name, not even sure they had a name, just an apartment number. It's almost like AirBnB there, but you will find very few casas on AirBnB. Most of the Cubans don't have access to internet, so they are not listed online, but that doesn't mean there are few Casas. There are actually quite a lot options.
What we did for our 2 weeks stay, we only booked a hotel for 3 first nights in Havana. Everything else we looked while being there. Luckily our driver was very friendly and much help finding appropriate casas.
I wish you a very nice trip!

I traveled in Cuba about a year ago, I stayed in casa particulars the whole time and I highly recommend them! Especially if you want to support local people over government run hotels and resorts.

Hi Klaudia. Wow, great video!! and definitely looks like a very nice place to visit. And doing it with your companion is even greater. Unfortunately we had time to explore only the western half of the Cuba (Havana, Vinales, Trinidad, Cayo Santa Maria). We ended our road-trip with very beautiful stay at Cayo Santa Maria, which I also saved as a video. You're welcome to take a look: ruclips.net/video/knul8muQrzE/видео.html
Wish you much more safe travels and wonderful moments.
