    The boot removal tool is an overstated requirement for this job. The part is not sold locally by anyone and who has time to fiddle with ordering it online? Overpriced for it's intended use as well. A simple pair of angled, needle nose pliers easily does the trick. Allot cheaper and readily available everywhere. Don't waste your money folks.

      Rick Baker $15.99 on eBay and worth every cent. That tool also easily installs the cables back properly with a satisfying click.
      But you keep saving that money bud...

      @@auxmike Actually Rick is correct, its not difficult at all to remove with needle-nosed or angles pliers or small hose pliers. Has nothing to do with "saving money", any half-wit can use common tools. But you keep "satisfying" yourself bud....

    I didn’t have to remove the manifold. I bought a pair of spark plug pullers at advance for about $12 and was able to pull off the caps. At first I thought you had to twist them but all that was necessary was to pull. I disconnected the injectors(?) for easier access, but no big deal. The other great tip was a magnetic pick up tool, really made setting the plugs in and getting them out much easier.
    I used a medium and a long 3/8 wobble socket extenders, sometimes with a swivel head extender with long 16mm socket all from harbor freight, applied anti seize and tightened plugs to 22 ft lbs at the end

    5) 5/8 long socket
    6) pliers (for hose removal)
    7) screwdriver kickstand (optional lol)

      The only thing that really matters is that there are no leaks. If that intake is fully sealed, I'd say it's fine.

    Wanted to say THANK YOU for this great video. There are other ways to change the spark plugs, but after watching this video and considering the options that don't require removing the intake, I went your route. Since I was changing plug wires as well, it was the obvious choice. Thanks again!

      I know this is a old comment but I wish someone would explain to me why removing the manifold is the obvious choice?? Looking into any maintenance manual for this vehicle it allots 2.5 hours of labor and removing the manifold takes at least that long so what we can conclude from this is that VW never intended for it to be removed for a plug job. 2.5 hours of labor is talking about just removing and replacing the plugs.

    I just finished this job 10 min ago. One should clean the area around the plugs before taking them out. You do not want dirt in the cylinders! No need to remove anything.. A u joint for the ratchet is helpful on number 2. A good set f big needle nose pliers is handy too! So if you are inexperienced, or don't have proper tools, pulling the intake manifold will make life easier. I would say it's a 45 min job without pulling the manifold; that includes cleaning up w compressed air etc....

  • @charlesnorthup3665
    @charlesnorthup3665 5 лет назад +1

    You do not have to remove the intake manifold to replace the spark plugs they are slanted just pull the boots off and remove them, very easy I just replaced mine. I used a coat hanger and bent the end to make a hook that will fit the spark plug wire ends ( they have little wings on them) and just pull off the boot, very easy and fast a bit to get the boots back on but not bad at all.

  • @BruceBalistreri
    @BruceBalistreri  10 лет назад

    Sorry for the slow response Bobby.
    It's really was to replace the wires. You push them on the tops of the spark plugs and they snap right on.
    The other side of the wires connect to your coil pack. Your coil pack is a little black box on the bottom front of your engine. It's easily accessible and you can just follow your spark plug wires to find it. The wires also easily snap on to the coil pack.
    In summary, it's very easy to connect wires. Snap the wires on top of your spark plugs, and then route them down and snap them on your coil pack.

    A few questions:
    We followed the instructions and it worked great. The car started up right away. It has a lot more power and sounds great. While I was tightening the rear left bolt on the back of the air intake manifold I didn't realize that the bolt has a slight offset even when it is all the way tight. I ended up breaking the aluminum threaded hole. So...
    1. Is this a safety issue or is this just an extra bolt?
    2. Can you do a video where you replace the air intake manifold?
    3. We tightened the spark plugs as tight as we could get them with a single hand. Is it easy to overtighten/dangerous them?

    • @BruceBalistreri
      @BruceBalistreri  9 лет назад

      you should be great regarding the spark plugs. I did them almost max (hand tight). The main thing I was getting at was not to cross-thread/strip the spark plugs. I'm sure you're fine.
      Regarding the intake manifold, it's really easy! it's just those 4 bolts (two on top, two on back). The main concern is making sure it's all air tight when you reinstall it.
      Don't lose the intake manifold gasket, and if you're worried about it sealing later, I'd put some High-Temp rtv sealant along the bottom of the manifold before you sandwich it down and retighten the four bolts.
      You should be fine!

    • @BruceBalistreri
      @BruceBalistreri  9 лет назад

      the only thing that really matters is that it's sealed. if too much air sucks through the intake manifold, the car will stall on idle (you'll know immediately).
      if it idles, you're gravy!

    You did say you're not mechanically inclined so I'll give you that however, there is absolutely no need to remove the intake manifold. Now you're making another expense (gasket) and an unnecessary step. Simply using a good swivel socket adapter on your spark plug socket will do. Basic tools.

      +Sammy Laskowicz the coil pack is pretty easy. You have to remove three 5mm bolts. These wires should work. You also need to remove 3 6mm bolts that fasten the air pump to the lower air intake manifold.
      Having done all this I think you probably can replace all the plugs and wires without pulling up the manifold. Try that first. Its really tricky to remove and I broke the bolt of the back left.

    If you yank on the existing wires, you'll break the 90 degree elbow on them.

    While I appreciate your video, had this been my car (I have a Jetta and my 2 daughters each have one) I would have handled it differently. First, there's no reason to remove the manifold. It might make access easier however on the flip side, you have to deal with removing and re-installing the manifold. Your plugs looked fine to me. I would have cleaned them up on my wire wheel, re-gapped them, and re-installed them. Speaking of re-installing them, I would have applied anti-seize to the threads. I'd be willing to bet that our 3 Jettas run as good as yours and I didn't have to remove any manifolds to achieve this. Out of pocket expense amounted to a little anti-seize grease as opposed to a new set of plugs.

      Many Spark Plugs today will simply break if you touch the electrode center conductor. Irdium/Platinum. Do not wire wheel them. OK for Copper based plugs, in a pinch. They are sold as non gap-able, best to never touch them. If taking off the wires and removing plugs, simply spend the $24 for a new set. Yes, his plug did not appear fouled, color was not bad. Definitely apply Anti Seize. best part of this video was comments on whether or not to remove the Intake Manifold. Both answers have their value.

      I AM STUCK ON THIS QUESTION. I DID GOOGLE...there is gapping options and either bosch or ngk. I have the 2.0 manual wolfsburg edition and it tends to flip flop in components...still at a loss. I already ordered the googled wires and they were WRONG.
