  • Shoe shopping is less than fun on a normal day, but it's especially hard if you have cerebral palsy like me. In this video, I walk through some extra things I have to think about when looking for shoes. Have questions about my shoes and braces? Leave them in the comments or send me a DM on Instagram.

    I hate how my shoes wear because you know sometimes with cp that’s gonna annoyingly happen… but I wear crocs, western boots (I’m a country girl I also ride)… I wear Nike slip ons or flyease, I have a few vans I tuck in the laces.

    I am pleased for your successes. I unfortunately wear a size two in childrens and finding them to look more mature and fit over my afo is a pain. I had polio so I can relate

    I get how you feel when it comes to AFOs making you feel like your falling backwards. They do help with spinal alignment.
    There are shoes that take the place of AFOs! They are called Memo orthopedic shoes for kids. I have a pair of the short SMO style.

    That is interesting about the wedges; may I suggest that you find a cobbler and bring him a pair of running shoes and have him build wedges on them? I know people who have had things like this down and it makes their walking lives better, and is better on their hips, too.

    When I’m wearing my afos I use the flyease, it’s quite embarrassing that afos have to have a major size change with shoes and that makes my feet look awkward so that’s why I prefer to use my wheelchair that way u can’t tell how big it’s making my feet look

    Rocket Dog shoes make high tops with zippers on the side. They are similar to Converse, but prettier. They have a rubber toe and heel cap, and I find it helps to hold my braces in place. You should try them.

    • @SarahKateSligh
      @SarahKateSligh  3 года назад

      Can you just find them in any shoe store?

    • @americangirlballet

      I’m not sure. I ordered mine online. I love Amazon. I get a size up from my normal size, but size and a half up would give more room.
      I wear plastic braces.

    I think you'll like CP Shoes - cpshoes.tumblr.com/. It's run by Maria Town, who is a badass woman with CP (and a good friend of mine) and is all about sort of the joy and the sadness that shoes bring you when you have CP. It hasn't been updated in a few years, because Maria has been super busy (she worked in the Obama Administration, then she was the head of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities in Houston, now she runs the American Association of People with Disabilities), but I know she'd love to get back to it and I think you'll appreciate it, and her!

    I happened to be rewatching this video...and a few points... 1) I used to make fun of my sister cos she had so many shoes and, lo and behold, I turned into her and while maybe I don't have 30+ shoes, I have way, way too many... 2) when you're at home, are you normally walking with shoes on, socks on or just barefeet? and 3) did you get highlights in your hair, or does it do that naturally? Mine did something like that naturally, especially when I was out of doors naturally, but my skin is so freaking sensitive to the sun I get burnt super easily. Either way, it looks really good on you. I happen to like longer hairstyles but right now my hair is misbehaving and it's stuck about a little longer than yours. 4) I think if you made a brace that was also a shoe, you'd need to make the bottom much, much thicker and it wouldn't give you the mobility you'd want, and if you made them two separate pieces that were fused into one at the heel or somewhere else so that it would still be one assembly, the heel wouldn't be flexible enough for those who needed it. Also the plastic would be prone to cracking with that much pressure on it constantly, and it would need to be made extremely non-slip, so a slightly different material, so harder to cast. I'm not even an engineer and I'm thinking like one. Too many "Seconds to Disaster" shows or "Well There's Your Problem" podcasts (with slides!, as they always say). I think the best compromise is to make the shoe with the brace in mind (or vice versa) so you know the brace would fit in the shoe (or vice versa) so you know what you're getting, you can pick your shoe colour out beforehand and know exactly what style you can get, at least one pair would be covered by insurance (and if that pair gets ruined, subsequent pairs), and if you want an extra pair you can purchase them and they woudln't be prohibitively expensive. That's probably the most likely option. And if you did that, you should ask around and get feedback from different people about which styles are best and try to design around that...maybe a Sketchers style, maybe a Vans style and maybe a Converse style, and probably a boot style for the winter. Ok, I'm rambling on too much, but I guess I put a lot of thought into these things and maybe that's why my questions are so detailed lol! But you have good ideas and they make me think a lot in return hehe. Hope you have an awesome day. I've got doctor appointments. Yay. Can you hear the sarcasm in my voice? lol

    Have you ever walked without your brace around a waterpark or any type of park? I have CP also and I had a Achilles tendon lengthening surgery, and I want to go to a waterpark, but it is not accessible without being able to walk. What would you do?

  • @riinak7212
    @riinak7212 4 года назад

    This is a really informative video - thanks a lot for posting! I did have a question though: there's a video of you walking after a surgery on your mum's RUclips as well as a newer one on her Instagram and you seem to have more ease of motion and a quicker gait on those. Did you decide to switch braces because the other ones weren't supporting you as well? It may have also been a change in center of gravity as you were younger then. Either way, how do you do without the braces or the supports in your shoes? I'm writing down questions to ask my orthotist when I have my consultation after this virus leaves. I liked the description of how you felt in the braces best, so I'll have some idea of what to expect. It'll be weird to get used to, but if it helps my knees and ankles, I'm for it! Thanks again! :)

    This is a great one. Very informative. Wedges being comfortable- it just makes sense mechanically but I never would have thought of it. Do the braces serve any purpose for you besides changing the appearance of your gait? Do they prevent orthopedic injury? Thank you for this!

    Hey! I'm a student and I'm doing a project on shoes and I want to create a shoe that helps people with braces. I don't know much about them, but are people embarrassed by them? Would someone with a brace show them off like one would show off colorful socks?

      @@SarahKateSligh Thank you so much for replying! It means a lot. I'm genuinely curious and want to learn more... I know you cant speak for everyone but how would you feel if there was a shoe that somehow showed off your brace like the brace would become art. It would show through and become a part of the shoe design.

    • @SarahKateSligh
      @SarahKateSligh  3 года назад

      Of course! I'm always willing to answer questions! Can you explain exactly what you mean by that?

    • @jennyhernandez7422
      @jennyhernandez7422 3 года назад

      @@SarahKateSligh It's hard to explain with words but the best way I can describe it is a shoe with a clear "window" where you can see part of the brace. For example, I know kids braces may have butterflies so the butterflies would peak out of the shoe.

    • @SarahKateSligh
      @SarahKateSligh  3 года назад

      I think I understand. I know I would enjoy that, but not every brace in the word has fun designs like that, so I think it's a cool idea just keep in mind it's not universal.
