  • NASA research into flexible, high-temperature space materials may some day improve personal fire shelter systems and help wildland firefighters better survive dangerous wildfires.
NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service to see if flexible thermal protection system technology being developed for space entry vehicles could also work to protect firefighters caught in a raging forest fire.

I understand this seems like really awesome technology but... are we sure they're not just making human-sized baked potato pouches?

It's the reverse of that. The idea is to keep as much heat as possible *outside* the pouch so the "potato" inside doesn't bake.

That's what you *want* us to think! The Tin Hat Societies will be all over this eventually ;)

I know I'll be honest I geeked a little. Doesn't matter who at NASA replied, they still did it :3

Did you folks test any silica aerogel composite blankets like Pyrogel XT? The performance, weight, and thickness would seem be within your requirements. :)

Will they have a problem with running outof oxygen to breathe though? I remember this being mentioned as a problem.

Believe the answer is that this is only intended to be a short-term shelter. Ideally, one wouldn't spend enough time in it *to* run out of oxygen. Trying to confirm that answer with Josh and Ray.

NASA Langley Research Center i suppose one of those short-term scuba oxygen masks could be included if needs be.

How long exactly? I heard a story about firefighters who had to wait 5 hours in these things?
