And no. I still don’t want your Toyota 😂 If you watch the video you’ll see how glad I am that this happened. See, if you want comfort and never experience any adventure or unexpected events, you should get yourself a new VW Golf with a warranty. If you’re travelling the world, living in your custom expedition truck and open to challenges… you follow your heart ☺️ Call me romantic, but to me, living your life with soul is everything. This is what adventure is all about ❤️

Possibly a mistake to have to pull trans twice (having done that sort of thing few X, pulling and reinstalling are the biggest headaches, rebuilding a manual not so bad usually), not knowing particulars of situation they might have caught filter issues 1st time, but they sure seemed to know their biz and take care of it. I read a story about a English woman who wanted to tour Europe in her Rolls Royce. I think it was back in 1920's or 30's. So on a ship went Herself, The Roll's & her chauffeur. During this tour the car broke down. A local with a team of horses towed the vehicle to a local repair shop. They discovered it had broken a universal joint. The local repair man said he could repair if he had the part. So Now the woman had to find a telephone and order the part from Rolls Royce in England. Much to her surprise not only did they send out the part, They sent 2 mechanics to fix the car as well. This video reminded me of that story.

Hi Eva, I'm a retired chief marine engineer and I live in Scotland. I have been a subscriber since you bought your defender. I'm a bit of a Land Rover nut and have owned 12 at the last count, all the way from Series 2 right up to my favourite, the Discovery 2, td5. (You need a bit of comfort when you get older, heated leather seats, etc. !!). I have completely rebuilt a Series 2a on a new chassis and am currently rebuilding a Series 3 lightweight on a new galvanized chassis. I like your attitude towards breakdowns and the fact that you are learning how the vehicle works. This will help you a lot as you will begin to recognise when things are not quite right and have repairs done before the inevitable breakdown!! You are a very nice person, have a really good attitude and I wish you all the best on your adventure! Charlie.

It was about you showing your character when the chips are down. You had courage, belief and attitude. Three key strenghts you need to overcome anything life throws at you no matter what they are. Negative or positive! Keep them with you always. A broken down car was just an event that triggered your internal strengths that you thought you never had. "I'm grateful. No more fear."
    A beautiful philosophy of life.
When I was in Zagreb, I went to a church whose walls were filled with little tablets containing prayers that all began "Hvala" ('Thank you'). Essentially, the philosophy is to be thankful for whatever comes one's way, good or bad. Something can always be learned.

There is a saying... "If you want to get to the Australian outback take a Defender... but if you also want to come back take a japanese car"... if you want to struggle and seek adventure the car you choose should serve that purpose in a good way, not by breaking all the time and becoming the reason for all that struggle. Yotas are horrible offroad. Independent suspension???? Really??? They require SOOOO much modification just to be on par with a stock Rover. I've watched on numerous occasions bone stock Grand Cherokees, Wranglers, Rovers and Suzukis walk off and leave purpose built overland Land Cruisers, 4Runners and Tacos. Dependable means nothing if you are constantly stuck or unable to proceed forward.
We've been to Uwharrie OHV and watched firsthand just what I'm talking about. Yotas are dead dependable until you mod them. Due to extremely specialized mods and equipment to get them where they need to be for offroading/overlanding when they do break good luck finding those specialized parts.

    • @shepleonard8695

      Two words....Camel Trophy
      Never saw Toyota in it.
      Dakar Rally???
Land Rover has 34 stage wins to Toyota 24. While spending less in the process.
Toyota best most dependable 4x4.....if you don't modify it and 90% of your trip is on tarmac.

@@MikeTython813 Nope! Just honest. Brother owns a 19 4Runner and 04 Disco. No way in hell he'd take the Yota over the Disco offroad. I've got a 08 Wrangler and 17 Range Rover Sport. I've watched a 20 Land Cruiser get stuck on wet grass (driver knew what he was doing), my Sport just drove off never spun once.
Like I've said, Dependable means nothing without mobility.
There's a reason why Rovers are sought after so much. They are the benchmark for offroading AND they are simple to work on and repair. Break down or need a part for a Yota globally and you're stuck waiting for that part to arrive by mail. Defenders are a global vehicle and parts are virtually everywhere or are easily repairable /fabricated.

So as a defender owner(29 years old, non mechanic) I really can relate to the whole process you’ve been going through. Something similar happened to me not so long ago. However, I’ve been driving my defender and altering it to my liking since 2013. So in those 8 years I’ve learned a lot and know when something is not right or isn’t reacting the way is should. So in the particular case I already made an appointment with my local Defender hero’s and told them what was happening. Not 2 days later it completely broke down exactly as ‘planned’. So it was an awkward tow trucks drive to the shop and a week later it was fixed. So what I’m trying to say is: you’ll learn more and more when it is time to ask for some help before it brakes down completely.
Having said that. I’m really curious what the total repair including al the non-defender expert repairs has cost you. Comparing it to what I had to pay for just the transfer box and a new spline, I can imagine it would be a very expensive endeavor.
Wish you all the best. And I hope your Defender will be the best 4x4xfar for you from now on ✌🏼

U.S tran used about 50 small ball bearing that plug holes switch to decide shifting speed.

I drove a 1980 40 Series Land cruiser from Panama back to Canada in 2003. We had so many breakdowns in so many places. If we would have taken photos of every single person that helped us it would of covered the interior of the truck! What I learned was adversity give you great stories. Every break down was an opportunity to meet the locals who were always so accommodating and helpful! They love our surfmobile and our story which in the end became in a small way their story. Your attitude at the end was absolutely the correct one. You have a great story to tell and a better truck to continue on traveling with to get more great stories.

    3:48 Spot on.
You don't need to know enough to fix a vehicle. You just need to know enough to know what's wrong so you can make informed decisions about repairs.
In this case, with more knowledge, you'd have known that expecting a spanner-monkey to rebuild a gearbox is wildly optimistic.
It is, OTOH, well within the capabilities of a spanner-monkey to fit a reconditioned gearbox.
    Stick with Odyssey.
If he's unreliable now, it's because past owners have neglected him.
Get him serviced regularly, fix things as they go wrong, and you'll make him more and more reliable all the time. :-)

Does not matter if it is Toyota, Mercedes or Land Rover. The Land Rover has the advantage of a huge following, that will come to your assistance as best they can. Just enjoy what you have and learn the weakness and the strength of the model you drive.

Within 5 minutes so random guy spotted me in a discovery and towed me to a garage.

Hi Eva I love your channel, the adventures you go on and the fact that you learned so much from this breakdown. As someone who has owned, loved and repaired many cars and motorcycles through my lifetime I understand the pain and frustration of a badly timed breakdown. I've also "fell in love" with a few vehicles that after a time, like a bad relationship I had to ultimately do a cost and benefit analysis and say goodbye. Sometimes that took years, other times a few months. There is one part of your story that you left out .... the cost of your "love". I can only imagine how much it cost to have the truck towed 4 times, the cost of your hotels, food, rental cars etc, not to mention having the tranny repaired and installed, then removed again and re-repaired and installed and removed again. Even if the generous and kind people of Turkey gave you an exceptional deal on the labor and parts, you are no doubt still considered a "rich foreigner" and the whole event must have cost you $$$$.
