This was fascinating! You really dug deep into the stats from the Pilgrim Office. One thing you didn't get into which would be interesting is what percentage of people walk alone. (Also, how many people start alone but don't finish that way and vice versa.) I hope you can come back and do the Shikoku Pilgrimage again some day.
Don, great to hear from you! BTW, just subscribed to your channel! These 2 stats aren't actually available, which is a pity as it could give us sooo much information! Hope to be back to Shikoku as soon as... Kukai is calling :)
Thank you for creating these videos, they help me a lot with building my own Camino journey and ease the nerves surrounding it (never done this before). I hope to go this spring and I wish everyone who embarks on the journey all the health and stamina 🧡 Buen Camino 😊
I really enjoyed this video. It’s amazing to see the explosive growth in popularity! And the increase in global popularity. Thanks for compiling the stats.
After being restricted because of the Covid-19 pandemic, during 2020-21, Europe was closed to many travelers. I think people want to get out and breathe the fresh air.
First of all...happy newyear 🎉 I'm starting my camino in 74 days, on march 16, starting in my hometownOstend in Belgium. Starting on the Via Brugensis, Arras-Epernon, Via Turonensis, camino Frances and last but not leats camino Finisterre 🙂
Nancy, you truly are an inspiration! We would love to hear all the stories you will experience. Keep us updated, and when you get to SJPDP, let us know. We'll be there in May
Dear Erica and Ricky. Thank you for your beautiful Journal. My spiritual teacher was so pleased with your mindfulness and care. I am now working on my observations and how I move forward with my new perspectives. You are dear, dear humans helping us to find ourselves.
Hi! I will be walking the Camino from the 10th of April, this year. Can't wait to see the beautiful views, although I know there'll be challenges. Thanks for the tips.
I have long wanted to walk the Camino Frances. I hope to be among the American pilgrims either this year or next! Am concerned about coming for Summer/Fall 2024....do you think that the Olympics in Paris will also lead to many people staying in Europe to walk the Camino?
I think that Olympic Games might be an issue if you are walking or rather flying to France… and except few, the Olympic crowd is different then Camino one..
Our Camino Frances in September 2023 was great but would like to give a little less crowded Camino a try. Looking at Via de la Plata, Norte and Le Puy.
I went in 2019 and then in 2021. Pre covid and post covid. The differences were staggering gin terms of locations open. ease of travel. and the quality of the people who were on the Camino pre vs post.
I did the Camino de Santiago (From Saria to the Compostela de Santiago) in April 2023. I did it in five days. I am planning to do the Camino De Frances from St. Jean de Pied Port in 2025.
Interesting... At first glance, there could be different audiences attending these events, but there's also a chance that many Olympic aficionados will feel motivated to engage in sports afterward, like walking the Camino. :)
Great video guys. Really interesting statistics. I was one of the increase in Portuguese Coastal numbers in 2023. I’m looking forward to my first time on the Frances, starting in SJPDP in the second half of April 2024. Sorry to miss the retreat. Question is, at what number of pilgrims will each route become too busy? Wishing you both a happy and healthy 2024.
I think if 2024 pilgrims are open to it, they will be able to accept the grace that comes with 2024s rising popularity and bigger numbers. ❤ There used to be 1 million people who did this per year, so the rising numbers are bringing vitality back into an old tradition in this new age, with renewed meaning. How amazing to choose to be a part of that! Buen Camino!
I was a little surprised by the number of women walking the camino. At one point while staying at a monastery, in 2020, i was the only man of the 10 guests.
There are already some of our friends from the community on Mozárabe, and they say it’s quite peaceful… some Caminos, maybe because of distance or because of no Hollywood coverage , will never be popular- which is a good news ;)
Do you have statistics of how many become so obsessed with the Camino that they buy a house there? I am one of those. I bought it five years after doing the Camino. Heading back to it in a few days to just live on the Camino all summer. Good times to come.
@@caminotellers absolutely. We can meet at the bar and I'll show you my obsession with the Camino houses. Just let me know when you're coming by there.
After many years of saying, "Next year, next year, next year." I am hoping to start Camino Frances end of september 2024 st Jean pied de port. Some people recommend staying at St Jean a couple of days before starting and others say there is nothing of note to hang around for, so just get going. Any thoughts?
Happy to read that you are finally taking that big step to make your dream come true!! As for the first couple of days: we think it’s paramount to take them, and not to sightsee around, but because you need to really arrive, take in what is you are going to attempt, get rid of the jet lag, breath in a bit of the spirit before setting off, maybe journal a bit. If you start walking straight away sometimes you don’t even realise where you are, still with the mind full of all the things you have left at home! This is why we do the pre-Camino retreats in saint jean pied de port, because for us those few days before are vital to set the tone for the Camino! But this is only our opinion 😋 whatever you choose, we wish you an amazing Camino! And if you have doubts you can always reach us out at hello@caminotellers.com
Glad it was helpful! Let us know which Camino are you thinking about 🙏🤗 And by the way, if you enjoyed our videos and found them useful, please leave us a review. It will help other pilgrims find us and ensure a stress-free and unforgettable journey: g.co/kgs/opbtAzY
Hola! I found your chanel and loving your videos. I have also ordered your journal book ; the journey within. I would love to come for pilgrimage to start in France and Finish on easter sundat. Do you have a rough time journey would take, i am a good walker. Also, how. Busy do you believe this time would be? I would like to not book anywhere before hand for my journey.
Easter is one of the busiest times… cross first 15days and it gets doable! We aren’t booking at the moment and we have a bed every night! The French way from SJPDP is 790km and many do it in 35 days… but the secret is to go slow ;) shhhhhh 🤫
@@caminotellers hi. Thanks for replying. I just caught the end of your life stream earlier :)). So doing some more research, I think to start the beginning of March, ok I wont be for Easter but is ok. I think will be perfect for me with accommodation and not so busy. I do have another question though please. I eat only meat products, egg, fish, meat. Is there butcher shops in the towns I would walk though? Will 100% be starting Frances route SJPDP. 35 days is good, is that to the coast past Santiago?
You two are wonderful! It was great running into you in Portugal in April 2023. Question, you interviewed us on April 21 before heading to Fernanda’s about walking as a couple. How was this information used? Was it helpful? Thanks again for all that you do. Buen Camino! 👣🎒💞

I’m wondering if the pilgrimage numbers increased after the Great Plague(s)too… pilgrims thankful for surviving and seeking meaning for having done so.
Mmm is history repeating itself? The history also tells us that time ago Camino lost its strength due to overload, bandits and similar… and it nearly stopped existing.
My first thought would be that The Camino started as a faith based pilgrimage for Catholics and Catholic women tend to practice their faith more than men statistically; next, would be that women are more social creatures on average and this pilgrimage offers this; last, I think women may be more inclined to do it for the health benefits. Are any of these reasons without looking further into them myself? @@caminotellers
