Some of the best information on blades vs combs watched so far. I wasn’t searching for combs but rather a blocking blade and what it does. Glad RUclips popped you up in the search results. I started with a 5f for my standard poodles then tried combs. I like using a comb better, I find the blade is farther from the skin and the blade runs cooler. I’ve only used a 10 with the combs but will try a 30 from your preference. Many thanks for your professional presentation.
I am learning to groom my standard poodle. I picked up a few things here. I appreciate it. I’ve been trying to use the combs with an A5#10. Went and purchased a #30 at your suggestion, hoping it won’t clog as much👍🏻🤠
I'm a little bit of a coward. I'm using scissor cut entirely. I have a clipper but I haven't gotten brave enough to use it. With this new illness out there. I am no longer taking my poodle to the groomer not risking Getting respiratory illness. So we're puppy clipping all over a little shorter around the bum And i'm happy with not having the shaved snout She looks really good and she's very cooperative. I need to learn how to use the clipper on Her feet Though So they don't get wet and Icy w winter starting.Loved your content ALITTLE FAST🎉,played 3x to catch it all
I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this illness that's going around! Is it airborne like kennel cough is? If yes, you dog can unfortunately pick it up from literally anywhere other dogs have been present. I'm sure groomers in the areas with the infection are putting in extra measures to disinfect all of their areas between all dogs and monitoring for symptoms. I'm super inactive on RUclips as I've found TikTok much less time consuming, so if you're on the platform go give me a follow (thedoggroomingnerd there as well). I'll be filming tutorials soon. 😊
Would you need to add the length the blade cuts to the comb length? For example a wahl 10 blade cuts 1.8mm on its own, combine it with a number 2 comb which cuts 6mm wouldn't the final length be 7.8mm? Or if the number 2 comb is combined with an andis 30 blade which cuts 0.5mm wouldn't the final length be 6 + 0.5mm = 6.5mm So what im asking is does the blade size under the comb change the final length like the examples above, or does it cut at the stated comb lenght regardless which blade is used underneath?
You don't need to factor it in really as the difference is so minimal, especially when using a 30. You'll notice a difference in finish between a 10 and 30 though, I've always found 10 to leave a far choppier finish

Hi 👋🏼 I have a miniature poodle and I am using a mini clipper with a 10 blade for her face. I have tried a even smaller clipper with a 40 blade and an attachment comb but that was difficult and I wasn’t thrilled with the result. I know it is normal to use a 10 blade for her face, but I would like to leave a little more length. So my question is, is there a small clipper that has a 5 or 7 blade, I can only find the one I have (Andis) that came with a 10 and a 40 blade?
I have a Westie and would like to groom him but I am not sure which number blade I should use,I have a wall super groom clippers, I don’t like him too short ,would love 💕 some advice, thank you 🐶
Hi thank you for video I have a 14 wk toy poodle when is it best to get full groom I am getting mixed messages. Also I have done some research on best trimmer and for toy poodle it points towards the andis trimmer could you recommend a trimmer plz thank you in advance xx
You should start taking your puppy to a groomer as soon as they're allowed outside after puppy jabs. This isn't for the full works, it'd be for a "puppy intro" session that includes a bath & blow-dry, brush through, nails and a small tidy up. These sessions are super important to get dogs used to being groomed in a professional environment. Full groom completely then depends on your puppy's confidence levels, that'll determine when they're ready for it. And in terms of trimmers, I haven't used Andis so I can't comment on their quality! I personally use Heiniger Saphir clippers and Mastercut 5-in-1 trimmers
I'm new to grooming, I have 3 shitzu's and wondered what would be a good blade or attachment to use if I want to keep my dogs a little longer instead of a shave down
Just saw you video and my question is I have that same clipper you showed on this video so my question is what size blades are 0.8 ,1.4, 2.0 mm ‘s setting and the combs are 3,6,9,12 mm’s. The groomer I had said she used a number 6 I don’t know what that means so how can I get the same cut for my doggy with my clippers if possible .
Hi, thank you, your video was great! I Groom the main body of my cavachon with an andis 5fc blade, as I like a shorter coat, & I always scissor the face. I like to leave the head fluffier than the body but can never get the cheeks to look blended in right, so I’d like to use a comb attachment to blend the head and face in together, what size comb attachment(s) would you recommend? And would you use a different comb att for cheeks to the head? Many thanks xx
Hi! I personally prefer to use a length or two longer on the head, so either 4f or 4CA with a 5f on the body. I use the same length on the cheeks if I do clip down them, but as it takes all the hair the same length you may not be able to get a rounded finish on the head. If I want a round head, I'll lightly skim down the cheeks with the same blade I use over the top of the head and then use chunkers and/or thinners to blend it all together.
Groomer told me that they use "Zero." I purchased to start grooming my dog at home and I purchased the Wahl KMC+ which has 10, 18mm which is too short. What attachment do I need? I asked on Amazon's website and it looks like they sent the wrong one.
I just bought a clipper and attachments to trim the hair on the back of my Border Collie’s legs. What attachment should I use? I like it long but just trimmed up a bit for sanitary reasons. Thanks!
The longest you have, you want to avoid cutting into the undercoat as that can cause issues with regrowth. I probably wouldn't go shorter than 25mm if I was clipping a BCs bloomers
Thank you for this video. I have the 5/1 trimmer that you showed on your video. What will you recommend for a Shih tzu. I want short but not to short. Legs longer than body.
I often use a 7 blade on Shih Tzus bodies, which is 3mm. Then leaving the legs longer is a personal preference, I like leaving them a good few lengths longer so you probably want a comb guard that is 10mm or longer. It really depends on what guards came with your trimmers.
I have a Lowchen with a very fine, wavy coat. When I use any comb attachment his hair just lays down and doesn’t cut. I’m using an Andis with a 10 blade and have tried all of my comb attachments with it. Would a 30 blade help this problem? I am a beginner and I have been afraid to get a blade shorter than a 10 because I’ve been told I could nick the skin. I suppose with a comb attachment that wouldn’t be a concern though. I would really appreciate your thoughts! Thanks for the great video!
Hey Becky! Yep I'd definitely try a 30 with such a fine coat, I've always found that a 10 leaves an awful finish. You don't have to worry about catching the skin unless you get the skin between the comb attachment. 😊
@@TheDogGroomingNerd Thank you! I placed the order for a 30 and I am really anxious to try it. Love your videos. Lots of great information for us beginners:)
Hello, I have working Great Pyrenees, I understand we are in a warmer climate then what the breed prefers. I do not want to "shave them" I would like to trim and take out some mats. I picked up the Oyster A5 turbo with the #10, I also picked up #5 skiptooth based on the guide. I started and the #5 would not even get into the coat . I am VERY aware of the dangers of hurting them and too short . Any tips?
Please be very careful with a skip tooth as it's very easy to catch skin between the teeth. If the blade is not going under the matts then it's not a short enough blade, you may have to use the 10 you have instead. And please don't use a blade all over your dog as it can cause coat funk. A lot of groomers clip out a "tram line" on double coated dogs to give them a panel under their belly. This gives skin contact against cool surfaces in the hot weather.
It'll honestly depend on what length the owner wants and can manage. We have one Goldendoodle that normally would have around 6CA but they stretch their appointments far too long and he ends up getting a 7F all over every few appointments.
Hi! It's really down to personal preference. I've seen some taken super short with a 7 blade, and some left long with comb attachments. If I was told to do whatever I wanted on a BC, I'd probably go for a 16mm comb attachment or slightly longer.
If you're not sure, start with the longest blade / comb attachment you have and work your way down until you find the length you like. 😊 I do a few Shih Tzus on a 4CA and it leaves a nice fluffy finish, but isn't so long that it gets out of hand before appointments.
If the coat is in good condition, just get her straight in the bath. A good deshed or conditioning shampoo will loosen the old undercoat, then blast like your life depends on it. I do most of my deshed work in the bath and while blasting, makes the job so much easier! The one Newfie I have on my books currently just has a foot and hock tidy + clipped under pads, otherwise her furnishings are left natural. But a good outline trim looks so nice on Newfies too. 😍 And I'd never clip a Newfie unless it was medically necessary.
I've got a terrier cross dog with very long hair and shaggy looking legs and feet. I was told by a groomer I should not clip her hair. I was told trimming her could cause her to lose her hair and go bald. I don't want a shaved dog. I like her to keep enough of her coat that it doesn't change the look of her, just make her tidier. I've got clippers how short can I clip her without ruining her double coat. I was thinking of about 3" long but I can't find any combs that I can attach to get anywhere near that long. What should I be using? I've got andis clippers.
Without seeing your dog in person, I can't really comment on if clipping would damage the coat or not. Clipping into an undercoat on a double coated dog (coat like a Shepherd) can cause coat funk that thins the hair and it can grow back really patchy and wispy, but that'll really depend on the coat. Technically every single dog has an undercoat but it's only the double coated category that can suffer from clipping. Comb attachments generally stop at 1" long and you would just scissor the coat if you want anything longer. Longer comb attachments don't really work and they just end up dragging in the coat, I've tried lengths up to 1,5" but they're just not worth the hassle.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd Thanks for your reply. I understand not seeing her makes it difficult. The groomer called her top coat guard hair. She's a terrier cross and her top coat is a bit wiry and she has a really thick undercoat underneath. She always looks scruffy. Her legs remind me of the chickens with the long feathers sticking out around their feet. She might have corgi in her because of her fluffy looking butt. Can't get into a groomer here since covid so I'm left trying to figure out how to do it myself. I've clipped my spaniel years ago and he didn't seem to embarrassed to be seen in public.
I also most commonly use the same lengths as you 😊 Although I do find the short CA look good on some terriers for a more natural look! Would love to hear your routine for cleaning, oiling blades etc. This wasn’t really taught to me and they cleaned the blades say once a week or so 🙈
What number would you use on a Lhasa Apso drop coat if I want to leave 1 inch of coat? I'm new to grooming at home but I have all the tools. Glad I found your video.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd I have wshl attachment combs. I've read just like you said under a 30 blade from blade charts for his breed. Some groomers say 10 blade . Thank you so much.
Yeah the length of the blade underneath is down to personal preference, I just find a 30 to leave a far cleaner finish and doesn't clog up as much as a 10.
Hi - nice video and well explained! I am looking to buy a grooming device for my border Collie (as my pet groomer has closed down ) what size / length attachement would I use to cut my border collie's hair? many thanks!
I have personally not used the Andis attachments but Wahl ones definitely fit any A5 blade. Looking at the photo I would say the Andis ones will be fine too.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd am very sorry I don’t really understand if you can’t tell I’m a starter but I have the exact same clippers as you had in the video and it is only 0.8, 1.4 and 2.0 so what would you recommend for a long hair dog to go short
Ah gotcha! You want the shortest length (0.8mm) on the 5-in-1 trimmers underneath a guard. I wouldn't use them without a guard for anything apart from trimming underneath pads and hygiene as the longest length is only 2 millimetres.
I sometimes groom my mini poodle at home and have been using a 10 blade over the comb attachments but now I'm thinking this is where I'm going wrong as it tends to just get very 'stuck' with lots of coat. Would you recommend switching to a 7 blade on its own rather than the combs (I usually tend to use the shortest length comb) or switch to a 30 blade with the combs over the top?
It'll depend on the finish you want. A comb attachment will leave the coat looking slightly more natural, a 7 blade will give a very close and almost smooth looking finish on a Poodle coat. Also, how are you prepping the coat before you start clipping? The coat has to be squeaky clean and brushed through, otherwise the comb attachment will catch on every single knot.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd that's really helpful thank you!! I think I might look into getting a 7 blade although I don't groom her myself every time, she does go to a groomer sometimes as well. I think I've finally got the washing right after watching lots of RUclips videos but do struggle to get the coat fully straight when drying as I only have a human hairdryer. I do make sure I can get my metal tooth comb through her hair and all the way to the skin though before clipping. It's more that I get lots of hair stuck in the teeth of the guard that I have to keep stopping to remove and it takes ages, even though shes a tiny mini!
It means "finishing cut". Depending on the brand you'll see either F or FC, and they mean the same thing. The blade just leaves a nice even cut. You can also get skip tooth blades which leave a more rough finish.
This commentary is still confusing. I have a Wahl Arco 5 in 1 with settings 1 to 5. I read that 1=#40, 2=30, 3=15, 4=10, and 5=9. I understand that 1 is the longest coat setting and 9 is the shortest, but how long are these in inches? These are just meaningless numbers without that correlation. Then, my set comes with 4 combs, 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm. How do these relate to inches of hair length? 12mm= ,47 inch, less than 1/2 inch. How do I cut my dog to 5/8" length? Is less than 1/2 inch the best I can do with what I have? What if I use the clipper without the comb? And is a guard the same as a comb? And how do I use them in combination? The comments below speak of CA4 and 5CA. What are these and how do they relate to the numbers above?
Ok let's break it down! I've never used the Arcos myself, but based on what you're saying it's the other way around with the length. Setting 1 which is a #40 is VERY short, it's like a surgical blade length. That's only .7mm, that's the length I personally use under all my comb attachments. Setting 5 would be 3mm, that's close to a #7. 3mm is 3/32" if that helps to visualise the length on the Arcos. If you're only used to blades and combs in inches, the easiest thing is to throw the millimetre measurement into a converter on Google. 3mm - 3/32" 6mm - 1/4" 9mm - roughly 3/8" 12mm - roughly 1/2" So yes in this scenario your best option would be the 12mm to achieve the closest cut to what you're after. Guard and comb are the same thing, they're mostly called combs in the UK. :) Using combs in combination is actually really fun. A lot of groomers use one length on the body of the dog, then use a longer comb on their legs and/or top of head. Leaving the top of a dog's head longer makes their head stand out a little more, and leaving more hair gives you a bit more creative freedom with the rest of the face when you start styling. The 4CA and 5CA refer to the Wahl stainless steel comb attachment set that clips onto any A5 blade on standard clippers (like Heiniger Saphir, Wahl KM10, Andis Pulse ZR). A 4CA is 13mm (just over 1/2") and 5CA 16mm (5/8"). CA is just short of comb attachment. Hope this explains it all, if you have any more questions then ask away!
Whatever blade goes under the matting. I tend to start with a 4F (9.5mm) and then work my way down to 5F, 7F, even as short as 10F (1.4mm) if the matting is really tight.
Hello just finished watching your video and loved it 🥰 I am due to groom a Shih poo on Wednesday and the owner would like it not too short and still a bit fluffy. So I was thinking CA 4? Would that be about right? If so what do I then use on the head? Thanks in advance
Hi! Yeah 4CA leaves a lovely fluffy finish on Shihs and Poo crosses. I like to go a length longer on the top of the head to give myself a bit more room to play with the overall shape of the face, so I'd say a 5CA would work great. 😊

This wasn’t really taught to me and they cleaned the blades say once a week or so 🙈
I actually have a blade cleaning video coming up next week! 😄
@@TheDogGroomingNerd ah brilliant!!
What number would you use on a Lhasa Apso drop coat if I want to leave 1 inch of coat? I'm new to grooming at home but I have all the tools. Glad I found your video.
If you have the Wahl comb attachments, number 8 leaves an inch of hair. 😊 If you have a different brand, you're looking for 25mm in length.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd that was an excellent point you made. Can't remember if I heard that but maybe I did 🤔. New member and ready for more videos.🙂🦮
Welcome to the family, I'm very happy to have you! 😘
Hi - nice video and well explained! I am looking to buy a grooming device for my border Collie (as my pet groomer has closed down ) what size / length attachement would I use to cut my border collie's hair? many thanks!
I would never recommend cutting a Border Collie's hair unless it's medically necessary
I have a poodle and I have a Border why on earth Would you want to cut the hair of a border collie ????
Can andis or wahl combs be used in oster a5 clipper?
I have personally not used the Andis attachments but Wahl ones definitely fit any A5 blade. Looking at the photo I would say the Andis ones will be fine too.
What blade should I use with a 3mm guard?
I personally always use a 30 blade underneath all comb guards, but lots of people go for a 10 or 15 too. Just about trying which blade you prefer.
@@TheDogGroomingNerd so will I just use 8.0 on it own without no guard I’m very sorry I just don’t really get it !
So the settings on the trimmers are in millimetres. 0.8mm is almost bald, you don't want to use that length on a dog without a comb guard over it.
Great video
What blade to use in paws for sheepadoodle?
I would use 30 blade.
Ah yeah it might be the 10 you're using then, I've always found that 10 just gets stuck. Not had an issue since swapping to a 30. 🙂
What size of bades is best for bichon freise
That really depends on owner preference. I do some on 5f because owner wants short and easy, some on 5ca.
What does an FC blade do?
It means "finishing cut". Depending on the brand you'll see either F or FC, and they mean the same thing. The blade just leaves a nice even cut. You can also get skip tooth blades which leave a more rough finish.
What number would you use on an schnauzer I have him cut nice and short
I normally use #7 on the body and head, #10 on ears. 🙂
What mm is a #7 & a #10? Thanks!
It varies a little by brand (by like 0.2mm so not much), but a #7 is around 3.2mm and #10 around 1.4mm
3mm - 3/32"
6mm - 1/4"
9mm - roughly 3/8"
12mm - roughly 1/2"
So yes in this scenario your best option would be the 12mm to achieve the closest cut to what you're after. Guard and comb are the same thing, they're mostly called combs in the UK. :)
Using combs in combination is actually really fun.
Short hair chihuahua what number should I use 3
You shouldn't use a blade on a Chihuahua. Why are you looking to clip one?
my dog is partly matted so what to use?
Whatever blade goes under the matting. I tend to start with a 4F (9.5mm) and then work my way down to 5F, 7F, even as short as 10F (1.4mm) if the matting is really tight.
Please Brush regularly as matting will hurt your dog
so confused so there are two blades on each clipper?
What part is confusing you? There's only one blade you use at a time.
You're so beautiful ❤️ and helpful also.
Thank you 🙂
So you’re just selling a book??
I'm sorry I don't quite understand what you mean by your comment?
I'm completely confused 🤔 speaking too fast
You can enable captions and also slow the video down to help
The video is too long and doesn't give me the information I need . Waste of time
Hello just finished watching your video and loved it 🥰 I am due to groom a Shih poo on Wednesday and the owner would like it not too short and still a bit fluffy.
The Dog Grooming Nerd I’ll do just that, thanks so much x
No problem, glad I could help 😊
