It seems like that yearly/biyearly deadlines really are the death of franchises. Pokemon is suffering from the same problem: they're formulaic, the people who make them have been doing it for 20 years and are tired, and they're under tight deadlines. Modern games need more time in the oven, we shouldn't expect yearly releases and neither should corporate executives.

    • @blueredlover1060

Half the time with Pokémon specifically, it feels like they're already making the next game before whatever new title is hitting the shelf. As much as I can't stand the later Call of Duty games, at least they're developed by a cycle of three studios. It gives them a bit more time to do things, even with a yearly release schedule.

Hudson Soft handled the yearly release schedule pretty well as far as I'm concerned. They even put out two games in the same year, and both were good.
The problem from what I can tell stems from NDCube putting more focus on presentation than anything else, considering how good these games look and feel. I don't have an issue with better graphics especially since it's a nice break from a lot of Switch games I've seen that look like deuce. But I'm pretty sure the devs don't get enough time to balance or flesh the game out as a result of it.

The rng bonus stars would be really cool if in-game the toad announcer would hype up one of the three "chosen" bonus stars. Like maybe on turn 1, he would say the coin star is a hot star this game or something like that. and then on 1/3rd of turns in, he reveals the second one, and 1 half of the turns in he opens up the last one. Bonus points if after activating you can then see them in the pause screen, It's little things like that that are always missing from rushed games.

I think you're totally right about the Mario Party staff having to rush games too much and not getting the chance to properly flesh out ideas, and this video made me realize that it's a problem that's existed even before the 2010s Mario Party games. Remember Mario Party 5's Super Duel Mode, which was about making custom vehicles and then engaging in combat with them? Also remember Mario Party 5's Card Party? Remember all those weird minigames in Mario Party 8's Extra Mode, like the 30 player racing game? Isn't it a little nuts how the team came up with at least one puzzle minigame for every single Mario Party (Piece Out, Mario's Puzzle Party, Bob-omb Breakers)? Like the Mario Party staff keeps coming up with an insane amount of great ideas, but they never get the chance to properly realize them.

I agree, because while I thought Super Mario Party's gameplay was decent for the most part, the generic style made the game a lot more boring to me than it would've been if it had the wacky style of the Hudson Soft era games. I have warmed up to the game since then, but if there are two things that I still don't like about it it's the stripped down classic party mode, and it's boring artistic style.
*Edit:* I just played the game for the first time in a while and I think I was too harsh when I first wrote the comment, because it really isn't a bad game and it isn't impossible to have fun with it, and it's style isn't as bland as I remember it, though I do still think the classic party mode is a bit too stripped down.

Honestly, I have to disagree with the idea that Mario Party is dead. It’s fluctuated wildly in quality over the years and got off to a rocky start. It took them five games to get rid of the Coin Star, a bonus that de-incentived spending money to move the game forward. People didn’t like the formula shakeup in 9 and 10, even though the car mechanic was handled well in 9 on account of the boards (10 did not do this, so it sucked. Yes, I actually like Mario Party 9). As for Super Mario Party, it’s main issue was a lack of content. It was pretty mechanically sound, I liked the presentation even though some people find it bland, and it combined some old and new ideas. ‘Course, the old games are still available to play and enjoy if you don’t like the modern ones. But keep in mind, it’s hard to say that MP is “dead” because it’s hard to judge it like any other series. Mario Party is basically shorthand for “random luck-based bullshit”, and while it can be fun, it’s hardly a serious affair, right down to trying to critique it.

The Pokemon Company have shareholders, those shareholders want profits on their investment, that means TPC needs to sell new plushies/trading cards and that means GameFreak needs to crank out new games, with speed prioritised over quality.
It's notable that one of the few really good things about Sword and Shield was the Pokemon designs. Almost as if the suits only wanted the designs and didn't allow sufficient resources to the developer to actually make they game they wanted to make.

I think that you kind of skipped over the real culprit to focus on just one aspect of it. The time crunch is definitely a large problem, but it really just amplifies the real issue, which is burnout. If the developers all got three times as long to make each game, the end products would definitely be a lot more polished. But the developers would still be just as likely to get tired of working on the same games over and over. So you'd probably end up with each game having even larger departures from the ones that came before. And some people would definitely still be happy with those games, since they would be good games, but there would probably also be plenty of people complaining about how each new game is nothing like the one they liked.
So I think the solution is to not only increase the amount of time between each game, but to also let the developers create some entirely different games between each party game release.

One of the most notorious examples is the original Tomb Raider series by Core Design. The first game was a massive hit, so Eidos requested a sequel by the end of 97. Perfectly okay, just take the tweak-and-improve approach and boom. Then they requested another one by the end of 98, which resulted in Core hiring a separate staff team to work on the third game to give the original team more time to make a next-gen Tomb Raider game for the 1999 holiday season. It was too much, which lead to The Last Revelation ending on Lara pretty much getting killed. That didn't stop Eidos from requesting more games, leading to an uninspired fifth entry, and a really bad sixth game that almost killed the series.
I personally love old school Tomb Raider, with 1, 3 and 4 being particular favourites of mine, but man I would have been exhausted having to work on so many sequels in time crunching deadlines.

One major issue with Top 100
Why the heck did they use such odd amounts for the different games? For a game celebrating the series, how'd it make sense to have like 2 games with just 3 minigames but one with like 15? - Honestly, I have to disagree with the idea that Mario Party is dead.

Having heard the phrase "Mario Party is dead" so many times, I honestly didn't have very high expectations of this video, especially when the first culprit was listed as the car. But I stuck through, and glad I did, because you really nailed what has precisely "killed" Mario Party. People like to point at NDCube and say it killed the series, yet forget many of Hudson Soft's devs moved over to it. All in all, Mario Party didn't really die all of a sudden, but rather it was a compound of multiple issues that most likely exploded in a way with MP9, and probably continue to this day. Having zero breathing room and doing the exact same thing over and over is bound to result in burnout. The series prints money by the second and as soon as you finish a game, Nintendo comes knocking asking for another one. You have no time to develop these ideas, and you also want to try something new, but the time is not there. Like really, does no one else look at there being FOUR Mario Party's on a SINGLE system, and think that it's a bit much?
That's probably why they started switching things up by 6, and every game since has been different in some way. But if we absolutely must point fingers at someone, it's probably Nintendo themselves. Anyway, this was a really good watch, and really made me think about what put Mario Party in this predicament, especially as someone who enjoys almost all of the games (8, 9 and DS are my favorites).

Just to mention something you may or may not have considered regarding SMP, dice rolls are smaller when compared to older Mario Parties so the coin dynamics are likely factored into that as well.
Older Mario Parties would roll a 1-10 with Mushroom items give you a chance to roll from 2-20.
SMP has you roll a 1-6 block with a mushroom adding 3 (5 if golden) to the roll and your partners adding 0, 1, or 2 to the roll as well.

I have only ever played 2 mario party games, Mario Party DS and Island Tour. The first was actually a friend's game which I had exchanged (temporarily, mind you) against my own version of Nintendogs. I adored it so much that I would stay up at night to play it and bring my DS everywhere - the first which I didn't really do back then as much as I casually do today. Even though it was infuriating sometimes (piranha plant boss I'm looking at you) I would play it so much and always have fun with almost every aspect of it - even playing the tutorial after several hours of game time just because I could.
Unfortunately I lost the card one day and the person didn't give me back my Nintendogs because of that. (Which at the time made me really upset but you know, a game for a game.)
The second was actually not planned for, Mario Party had been in my mind for years and I told my parents that it was what I wanted for my birthday gift, but the store they went to didn't have the mario party ds game (which I didn't know was actually a bit old by then), but they saw Island Tour there. Of course, not wanting to come back empty headed, and mistakenly believe that one mario party could replace another, they bought this one and gave it to me.
It was an extreme disappointment to say the least.
I've had some bad luck with some of the ds/3ds games I've bought over the years, some were boring, some weren't as good as I thought they'd be, etc... But even then I could usually get some value out of them.
Island Tour just... Tired me. It was exasperating to play, boring for the most part, involving little strategy over all, you could lose to terrible AIs because of bad luck, the story wasn't very engaging, and so on. I played it so little (with months of pauses between some games sometimes) that I couldn't even tell you why I still don't like it now despite the fact that I still have the game, it was just overall a waste of money, something which I quickly realized to my distress and disappointment, as it had costed quite a lot of money for a game that I barely played or even liked.
Tomodachi Life was 3 times more amusing when I was just writing bad lyrics for concerts or waiting for rap time than Island Tour's best feature (the tower you had to climb and avoid electric enemies on, I like minesweeper style games).
Edit: My bad, after watching more of the video I realized that I had also played Star Rush for a few weeks after borrowing it in a library. It was a very refreshing game which I quite enjoyed. I do agree on the bad aspects that were brought up, but since I didn't play it all that long the repetitive nature of the mini games and boss was only a minor bother before I had to hand back the card.

It's still one of my favourites and I'm glad it and 7 have gained more recognition overtime, but my favourite as of recently has become 3 purely for the simple option of being able to speed up board gameplay. That is a Godsend especially since I can't play N64 games at 60Hz.

I wonder why Mario Party was an anual franchise while Mario kart and Super Smash bros were mostly 1 per generation of console

I'm glad I go on research hunts instead of getting angry at people forever. I've played 5, 7, 8, & DS (I've also played 9, 10, & super) and when playing Superstars, I wonder why the games have become lack luster, or even bad. Superstars is great, but that's only because it's a remake of most mini-game's, and boards we've come to love that have great mechanics, and gimmicks. I thought it was because of Hudson soft disappearing, from not seeing that bee logo pop up anymore, & after some research, I realized that they also made the 64 ones, and they didn't completely disappear, but some migrated, and then not long after coming across this video, which explain a lot.
(I'd also liked to sneak in that I feel the GameCube era was their prime, and that I also miss traps)

I have fresh ideas for Mario Party, mostly story mode content though, but still I'd give the devs them in a heartbeat if it worked.

I would love a Mario Party 1 "Remix" for example. Add a basic item system(one item limit per person), a bank, remix Wario's battle canyon and Peach's birthday cake, remix the spinner minigames, and whatnot. How about a "power crown" rare item that makes a player encounter King Boo when passing Boo (but does NOT summon the King) who could steal from everyone. 30 coins cost for stealing coins and 100 coins for stars?

I started to see the yearly Mario Party starting to get out of control in a Negative way back during the Nintendo GameCube era.
Going from 4, 5, 6 and 7 in one console gen was a little too much in my view.

It's insane that there's four games on the GameCube. Granted the N64 had three, but that's a trilogy of games with each following improving on the previous. The GameCube has 4, an uninspired entry, 5, a flawed change of pace, and 6 & 7 which were superb but felt more like tweaks and iterations on 5's ideas as opposed to innovative sequels.

Clubhouse Games 51 Worldwide Classics was a project that NDCube needed. A stop for all the Party based ideas to focus on the minigames, that is what they excel what.

That game was great but I'm kind of sad they just abandoned the whole game the day they released it. Not even a patch to fix things like bowling or the 4 in a row AI.
I wouldn't even mind a paid dlc that's like 15 dollars for 10 extra games or something. I just remember having a lot of fun with it the first 2 months the game was released.

The Mario Party game with the most amount of missed potential is definitely Super Mario Party. It went back to the separate movement and classic mechanics. However, it didn’t really do anything new and was lacking in content. The worst part of the game was the online multiplayer. I still wish the game had a fully fleshed out multiplayer with full board game modes instead of the bare bones 3 rotated minigame mode we ended up with.

What you're describing in terms of Star Rush and what navigating the board feels like is basically why i enjoyed Mario Party Advance when I was younger.
And unlike Star Rush, Mario Party Advance has a really good traditional Mario Party aesthetic (it even has Kid Koopa), and the cars are purely aesthetic since each character has individual cars they ride in on the board (plus you're allowed to traverse through the board however you want, there isn't a set path you have to follow in a single direction). The only downside obviously is that the game requires a link cable for up to 4 Gameboy Advance systems. There's at least a single player mode though, like in most other Mario Party games.

If Nintendo wanted to revive Mario Party, they should inspire themselves from Japanese GameShows.
Also coins and stars in Mario games are supposed to be useful, buy items, accessories, powers, bonus points, clothes, etc:.

Whelp, this sheduele sounds familiar. Yearly releasses are so bad for Nintendo games. Pokemon here begin the main thing for me. They should only do it if they were willing to put more money into it and hiring more staff. Or just give the developers more time

Hot take: Mario Party 10 is my favorite MP. Why? Actual parties. It’s easy to take game newbies and throw them on MP10.
I’ve only played MP1-6 and MP10, and the only one I owned was MP4. I remember games lasting 2-4 hours. More often than not, we had to call it quits before the game ended. Why did it take so long? Everyone would spend 10 minutes scanning the board, figuring out where they were, where everyone else was, where the star is, and what items they have. This was generally true even when paying close attention, but it’s even worse when someone gets up to grab chips and drinks, as is normal at parties.
MP10 has it’s problems: Too linear and not enough worlds. But the party car is great because people can jump right in and figure out their move within a few seconds. Sure, the strategies are simple, but setting the next person up to lose mini-stars is a great way to dunk on your friends. Most of my friends aren’t gamers, so this is my go-to for game night when Settlers of Catan gets a little stale.

Seeing fans treating 9 (and 10 even tho i kinda still despise him) like trash kinda make Mario Party's history tragic.

You have a great voice, and I agree with your conclusion, I hope they will have some time
I think they might another little issue with mario party : Our expectations , like when they try to change or add new things, people just mostly hate it , because it's not what they used to have, even if didn't enjoy the one on the switch , I enjoy the side modes, the rafting is fun. But like you said it feels rush.
