Paul takes us through the instruments and features in BBC Symphony Orchestra Core.
* Note: Some instruments in this Walkthrough do not currently appear in BBC Symphony Orchestra Core. We are working on an update to get these added as soon as possible. These instruments are:
- Crotales
- Vibraphone
The BBCSO Range - www.spitfireau...
Compare the BBC editions - www.spitfireau...
NEW Mode Switching technology - www.spitfireau...
please add an option to use the discovery UI with the Core samples - there's something satisfying about the UI in the discovery edition :-)
Lol
what does UI mean?
@@AndrewHubbardBadger User interface. In other words, the orchestra layout that discover has.
That's what I was thinking, you just get a better overview and feel, as you can see the whole orchestra in it's arrangement.
I ended up getting BBCSO Pro... The string leader samples are absolutely amazing. I keep chuckling to myself about how wonderful it is. Thank you, team Spitfire.
may I ask on the mixing levels inside your DAW? Do you leave all the faders at 0.00 dB and when changing the dynamics of each instrument from inside the BBC plug in?
@@geompon6505 no, I don't tend to. I tend to ride all faders manually, either at input or after the fact. I read somewhere a few years ago that you should never aim to find balance in mixes. Balance is boring. Instead look for points of interest.
I often find samples, as good as they are, need considerably more fine tuning as far as dynamics are concerned. They don't "breathe" in the same way as acoustic instruments.
Not sure if this answer will help in any way, shape, or form.
@@geompon6505 It is well worth downloading the templates from spitfire. They have all of the articulations on seperate tracks, etc. They also have all faders set to zero, and then of course you ride your expression(volume) controler (or wwithin the DAW) separately to achieve your desired volume for that instrument. I got core with the core template and it is amazing to work with.
Many thanks for your update to BBC Core, allowing articulation editing. Much appreciated.
Paul, you demonstrate the Core so fluently, it's a marvellous and compelling introduction, amazing keyboard skills, very well done.
I recently purchased this library and love the sound and functionality. It's a perfect partner for more Romantic, Drama and Documentary type scores. It's also a welcomed change from the more ambient sound we get from many SF libraries. I hope to be able to upgrade one day. Thanks Spitfire, and to the excellent musicians and their efforts.
I just downloaded Core a few days ago and am still getting the hang of it, but I can tell already that it's a great program. Thanks so much!
Exactly what I needed! At the perfect price point and size.
Indeed! BBCSO for everyone :)
So very very tempted! Love your stuff guys, helping me stay busy in lockdown :)
Sounds great, congratulations on the release!
As a side note, I love how you've finally found a good colour grade and camera for these walkthroughs!
Fantastic skin tones and nicely set up lighting. Blackmagic cameras? Or is it still Panasonic stuff?
Thanks Alexander! Panasonic GH5S!
Coles 4038 for a web demo vocal mic is quite a flex. personally, I love it.
I've been using Discover and having fun with it, but this is making Core extremely tempting. All the extra articulations would be so useful. Time to save up!
I'm in the same boat!
yes
Excellent walkthrough, always presented so well and without foul language, so appreciate that. Class act. 👍🏼
I couldn't help but grab this before the sale ends. My first SFA library. Looking forward to the possibilities!
I enjoyed every single second watching this
I would pay a lot to get the articulations and and preciseness of BBCSO but in Abbey Roads. If those were to be added at a price, i would be overjoyed.
Spitfire produces libraries that come out faster than my wallet fills up !
Theres very little about what hardware you need for this. At £190 in the sale it seemed to good to miss even though I was way under specced. Well I modified the template for discovery adding the core solo instruments and a few other bits. Logic is taking 7GB and my 1.1Ghz MacBook 12 in (2016) has only 8Gb. The samples are on an external SSD run from a hub that is also driving a monitor. Buffer at 1024. It all works fine. So far. So buy it!
That harp is mighty lovely!
Paul gets excited again!
Whow, that help per key for percussions is awesome! That's thoughtful from Spitfire guys, respect!
For everyone who is considering buying the Core version:
I have bought the Core version. I don't know if it is a bug, but there is no techniqe editor in the application even though it should be there (the manual says so).
That means with every instrument EVERY technique is always loaded! For example violins 1 are loading 20 different techniques (about 826 MB) even if I don't need them all in every piece of music. So loading the whole string section uses about 4 GB of ram which is very annoying and definitly unnecessary.
With only 16 BG of ram this library is very useless.
you can always purge them??? or is it not available.
@@magnieye3547 No, you also can't purge them.
I also thought this was quite a setback. Heavy on the RAM when making a full orchestral template. But hopefully they will fix this. The whole point of the core edition should be that it can run on systems who aren't maxed out on RAM.
@@arvo1980 The annyoing thing is that the manual says you can on page 16. But this functionality isn't available! In the professional version it's apparently possible.
@Julian Packard Music I know that. But that's not the idea of a middle class library. It's meant for the hobby or semi-professional user. Take Hollywood Orchestra for example. With this library you can load every articualtion of every instrument seperatly without using a lot of ram for nothing. Also the Native Instruments Symphony Series let you do this. Even more that's possible in the professional version of BBC SO. So I just don't understand, why this functionality isn't part of Core. I hope it's just a bug.
Honestly BBCSO core is a bargain release from spitfire - much props to you guys!
I was going to treat Discover as a trial to decide whether to purchase Core, but it looks like I won't get Discover until the current Core price is over, or within about 24 hours of over.
At 22:54, there are 4 notes audible on the triplet variation, still great stuff!
Every instrument here sounds so incredibly good, I am very very tempted to purchase this
Thank you for the insightful video Paul. I'm thinking to buy this library, altough I don't understand if the close signal is included or if there's only the Full Mix.
I use this library a great deal. What a shame that the portamento effect in the string legato patches is so unrealistic. I write as a retired orchestral violinist of over sixty years professional experience. Many of the other samples are fabulous however.
Hi guys, thank you so much for the generous gift. As a spitfire customer I am still adjusting to the new downloader (usually just use Kontakt). As a suggestion can the downloader have an option to not download and install the formats I don't want? For example I don't need vst3 and aax. ty
I bought the core edition and love it, but...........
Do you think there will ever be an option add either the close mics or “mix 2” hyped mix?
I will never be able to justify the cost of an upgrade to the professional version personally, but I would pay a lesser cost just to add extra mic/mix options. Not all the mic options as I realise the size of what that would add, even just Jakes Mix 2.
I think it would help make the core version more versatile and useable in more circumstances. The mix 1 sound is a bit underwhelming for some of the instruments when trying to go for something more intense/aggressive.
Thanks 😊👍
Your sounds are amazing. Looking forward to upgrade to core or pro in the future.
OK, everything is fine but one issue...
I work with Cubase which means I can load one instance of the sampler and just add MIDI tracks to control different MIDI channels.
I see I can change MIDI channels in the app but I can't really use different channels for different instruments.
The result is that I have to load multiple instances of the app into my DAW to properly use it.
My PC is more than capable of handling this but it does seem like an overkill a bit.
I kind of wish now that it would be available in Kontakt...
The plugin is meant to be used like that (loading multiple instances). Just load as many instances as you want, doesnt require that much of your cpu, its the RAM of all the different instruments and articulations combined that is displayed in the cpu and ram meters of the plugin (every instance of the plugin will show you the same numbers)
Maravilloso trabajo!... Saludos desde México... 🙋🏻♂️🇲🇽
I would love to see a true physically modelled pianos VST/AUI that rivals modartt. I'm waiting on the discovery edition of this but might buy core altogether. Thanks for the run-through.
Correct me if I'm wrong: If I load a full orchestra template into my DAW to produce a baroque style track, the Bartok pizzicatos are loaded anyway? No way to edit preset content in BBCSO Core? Can someone from Spitfire Audio please tell me how much RAM a full orchestra template of BBCSO Core would need to load? A fully loaded BBCSO Discovery template is 1.01 GB.
I asked them, they told me that it would take around 800MB per instrument which is a lot without a purge function. They also told me that they are working on a function where you can load just the articulations you actually need
@@adameusmusic Thanks! 42 x 800MB ~ 33G RAM - so you're good to go with 64G. Not so easy for a mere mortal to stick to LogicProX with Apple's RAM pricing system. Time to switch to a Hackintosh ...
Did they do that update?
@@wolfie8748 According to the information on their HP: no. The "techniques editor" is only available in the Pro version.
Hi, Could you please do a video showing how to do articulation sets with BBCSO Core, because so far I have not been successful and getting stressed over it !!
When I say articulation sets , I mean being able to change the articulation of specific notes via the Piano roll in logic Pro X with the BBCSO Plugin.
Thank you!!
Have you tried putting the note that corresponds to the articulation you want way down in the piano roll?
Is it possible to upgrade from the core to the professional edition afterwards?
Yes it is !
any Glissandi or Portamento in the Strings?
This sounds absolutely fantastic, I would have bought it if they didn't slap Jimmy Saviles sponsorship logo on it.
Wow.
@@godisbollocks facts .
He’s uhh, dead now you know? Which means he most certainly won’t be getting any of the benefits from your purchase. In fact, it’s actually the players that make a good deal in royalties from BBCSO sales - and I very much so doubt that any of *them* were hiding Saville’s illicit activities. Sooo neither Jimmy or his lackeys are getting fat off the proceeds from the sales - I don’t see how that plays a part in the decision personally.
@@quinn9598 you're missing the point
THANKS!
Will it run on a 2.7 GHz dual core 8 gb ram macbook pro as its samples don't have all the mic positions?
@Paul Thomson Which keyboard do you use for your Demos?
I like the range of sections and techniques provided in this, but if it's only a single mix, I wish it would be something less ambient.
Hi, yes very good sound and realistic.
Man I just bought 2 days ago EWQL Hollywood Orchestra Gold mainly because BBC's was out reach and you guys come with this... I love SpitFire's interface and with BBC's Sound... Im trying to justify or see if it compliments or if it's just another one (different taste) to choose from.
@Peter Richardson Discover might be good in terms of sound quality but it only comes with Legato articulations which only covers a small portion of the Orchestral mockup. For that Price Heavyocity has Novo Essentials on sale which offers more.
I also have the HWO and just got this one recently. The spitfire player is a leagues better than the Play 6 engine, and load times so much faster. But I think I will keep both, because HWO has such a huge range of instruments, and plugs the few gaps remaining in the Core... they do all sit together quite nicely, especially if you use a common reverb to put them all in the same room...
I can't decide between the two - which is best, Hollywood gold or this?
Awesome sounds!
12:08 Gave me a flashback to the 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon
I hate that their marcatos stop after a bit. They should allow for the note to be held as long as we have the key down.
Thats not what marcatos are for lol.
Use sustains instead. All marcatos will stop after some time (in all libraries)
@@-Meric- Sustains don’t really have a sharp attack which is sometimes needed when writing fast passages. I know you could technically blend together the marcato and legato articulations in kontakt but it’d be nice if there was already a long articulation with a strong attack.
The vibraphone at 27:31 does not sound like a vibraphone AT ALL... Sounds like a celeste or glockenspiel like someone loaded in the wrong files. Someone please tell me I'm not crazy lol
So I see an update hit yesterday. What was in the update??
Maybe the feature to remove Articulations? They said they were adding this but I dont own the Core edition so i cant check if this was the update.
woodwinds + harp top
Amazing
What extra bits of equipment would you need for better sound out of the imac to run to pre-amp and poer amps? Pc' s have sound cards, so what about imacs?
Buy a Focusrite Scarlett Audio Interface. They are great for their price. :)
anyone know what's the midi keyboard he is using?
Newbie question here! Am I somehow able to use more than one technique in one track or do I have to download my Core always to a new track for every single instrument technique? Just wondering if there is a key command for changing eg. from legato to staccato while playing. Thx!:)
@Mikael how
@Mikael That's great! I'm currently saving up for Core, and one thing that was worrying me was did it have keyswitching or not. Thanks for that.
@@CraigRodmellMusic hope you saved up! couple of days left on the winter sale!
@@hitsounds I got it in the last Winter sale. (They called it a Summer Sale, but it was Winter here.)
@@CraigRodmellMusic great stuff!
how do you map the mod wheel to the BBCSO???
Does anyone know if the EDU discount is applied to the current sale price?
I got a 6-7% off from the discount price using EDU discounts
Hi, I have something important to ask: If I buy BBC Core, could my Mac air m1 2020 (macOS Big Sur 11.0 with 8gb RAM and 256gb SSD) run it without problems? I read about issues with "stronger" computers and I'm scared 😅
Probably not unfortunately. You could definitely run a couple instances of it, but not enough to have the whole orchestra loaded up.
@@masonthomassax I bought BBC Core and I have not any issue, also with a great number of tracks! My musical life has changed, I'm so excited. Thank you anyway! 😍
How about adding a string ensemble patch?
There's a free one in LABS
Yes. There’s also paid ones in originals that are great. But I meant bbcso string ensemble, recorded in the same room. They have all the samples they need. It would just take a little editing.
Fab!!!!!
9:16 Batman?
Hey, just bought it. I wanted to use the Logic template and read the manual for it, but the link inside the template is pointing to some piano sample pack. Is there any other place to get the manual for templates? Cheers
Awesome sound, I play with this but I contact spitfire support about modulation problem with template. Modulation is the same for all instruments articulations... Idk how to fix that
Awesome walkthrough. Also like the tone of Paul's voice, which microphone is that?
Looks like a Coles ribbon mic.
nice
Sorry can i desintall bbcso pro and continuing with Core? Not enought ssd capacity waiting for a new ssd thanks
Casual Coles 4038...
it actually depresses me looking through the spitfire website libraries smh
great walkthru thanks tho id love to hear some occasional foul language!
As soon as Paul started playing the flute I thought of family guy making fun of npr lol
Hi, how much does it cost?
it's $300 actually
@@MikeSheehan727 he meant euros
The more I listen to this walkthrough, the more out of tune notes I hear...surely Paul hears them too...can these be tuned within the GUI like you can with Kontakt? If it's just a few here and there I don't mind doing it, but I don't want to use a patch that is out of tune...Seems to be plaguing SF more than any other developer though, so not sure what's going on.
Wait... this was $1,000 not long ago? Is this the same one? P.S. I notice no one answers my questions here from Spitfire.
I think you are talking about the "Professional" version which is around that price.
44 instruments - website says 42?
Video description says crotales and vibraphone are going to be added to core.
video unavailable!
Sorry Paul, credibility shot with the contest! RIP Spitfire Audio... Maybe try an 8Bit section
Ok but why does Paul say orchestra like oar-kEs-tra
Core has 90% of the content lol u might aswell just get core
@@TwinsunianT Invest more reverb plugins then ;-)
On a side note, I would love to see Spitfire Audio work with Chris Thile to develop a library.
