I think that was intentional. The next album they released after midcity was CLPPING, which was the one with story 2. That sound is actually in the rest of the song, just very subtle. I think they sampled that particular sound as a base for story 2's beat to connect the two. 4D thinking from my bois at clipping.
So the connections are.... Mike (from story 2) could be the bartender at the bar randy drinks at. (in Story 1 or 7) Katrina (story 4)is mentioned at the end of story 7 "Little Trina" Grace (from story 5) is randy sister who dies in a taxi crash. Absolutely creative and insane story telling. But we still don't have story 3 or 6 yet :(
