I have listened to hundreds of videos about Sonic 3 and Knuckles at this point, and this was one of the best ones. The amount of detail you put into these makes my nostalgia neurons wiggle.
36:10 two minor notes in this section: The gambling is from Sonic 2's Casino Night, but it is merged with the Sonic 1 special stage. The Glowing Spheres is probably the best. As you get higher up, the probability of getting a 1up increases, and also, the higher you get, the more the "rings" ball is worth. Right near the top they are worth 80 rings (they go up 10, 20, 40 & 80). Throw in the 1ups and it makes this stage easily the best. Especially if you have unlocked "Super" on that characters save file. Get 30 rings, jump in the Red Stars, get to the top and you are probably walking out with at least 100 rings and an additional 1up. And since Sonic3&K saves your lives and continues as well, you can quickly have a savefile with 99 lives.
@@RobotnikHolmes Great video though. I got Sonic and Knuckles on the Megadrive Christmas '94 (I was 11). I still have my (probably) working Megadrive in a cupboard somewhere, along with the 16ish games I own. Sonic3&K was my favourite sonic game, bar none. Your SSTiering is totally justified.
Thank you for these videos! I've been looking forward to this one for a while! My favourite Easter egg about the lock on, is if you put in Sonic 1 the characters were vibrant and colourful but any other game they were darker. It knew sonic 1 was different :)
Amazing script and editing! particularly love how the video is over an hour long. One of the greatest Sonic 3 & Knuckles videos i've ever seen. I did notice a few oddities like in the music section the drum samples were very clean sounding not how they sounded on original hardware so they must have been ripped from Sonic Origins or something else, also it was a bit of a shame that ''Sonic 3 Complete'' a Mega Drive hack from 2013 never got a mention, aside from those two hiccups the video serves as a true documentary to the classic lock-on game. Well done sir RobotnikHolmes! 😊
Thanks for letting me know! I MAY have accidentally lifted some music tracks from Sonic 3 A.I.R by accident, though it sounds pretty obvious looking back. 😂 And "Sonic 3 Complete" I reckon will get addressed in the next vid! I appreciate your feedback and continued encouragement. 😁
As always, this was a pleasure to watch! S3K is easily my favorite of the Genesis tiles, so it’s great to finally hear your thoughts on it and experiences with it! It’s still so funny to me that a McDonalds promotion is the thing which caused the game to be split in two and led to the *Lock-On Technology* which was never used again. Kind of a shame, honestly.
My face upon seeing this had uploaded. Was just like my face upon opening a surprise gift on Sonic 3 back in February of 94. Amazed and can't wait to dive in. LFG!!
@ very much so! Really appreciate the amount of detail you go in with not only the history of the games, but everything. It’s a great time watching. Appreciate your dedication!
What an absolute blast this was to watch! I remember getting Sonic 3 when I was but a wee lad and playing it so much and loving every moment of it. And being the young, uninformed kid I was, I had no idea that "& Knuckles" was a thing, so my absolute surprise when it turned up one day via my parents to then learn "Wait, there's MORE!?" absolutely flabbergasted tiny me! For me, growing up with this, I loved OG Sonic 3 as it was. The ending theme being a key highlight of the games music, and I loved seeing the "spin around" animations that the characters made when on the rotating lifts in Hydrocity, with me often pausing the game rapidly to catch each unique frame to the draw on scrap paper. Once I got my hands on S&K in its cardboard box, a stark difference to the normal hard-shell ones regular carts came in, despite my young age I babied the heck out of it, wanting to make it last forever (it did not). But ultimately for me, S&K on its own, whilst a fun Sonic game, was probably my least played cart of them all, simply because it was really limited on its own, lacking any save features, a 2 player mode AT ALL (no Tails to be found let alone VS race) and just that I preferred S3's Zones compared to S&K's bunch. With the release of Sonic Origin, it was the first time I had ever heard the beta music tracks for the game, and yea, they just don't hold up to the originals. I can kinda vibe with the Carnival Night track, more so if it was actually "better", might also help Launch Base be better in that respect, but Ice Caps beta track belongs in a different game, as it really throws off the vibe given with it. Tho I'm not sure of what beta tracks were used originally, the OG tracks in S3 and S&K for the Invincibility and Super Sonic forms, I really do not like. They last about 12 seconds, and are a 'slightly' changed loop of the first 6. Where as the tracks used in Origins, either with Invincible/Super or the "Unused Track" which I think is used in S3 AIR, are far more appealing as they are just longer and nicer tracks to listen to. Welp, that's my 2 pennies on my origins with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which you masterfully was able to rekindle some nostalgia for me with this brilliant Retrospective! Thank you for making this, and I look forward to seeing more! =D
Thank you! 😁 Sonic 3 really adds a lot of little things that make it exciting to play. And I totally agree, the replacement tracks in Sonic Origins don't go nearly as hard. They had to do what they had to do, I suppose. 😅
I was 10 in 1990 and 20 in 2000. Sonic 1 2 and 3&K were awesome. I never was able to get into any sonic game after (by the time it was the mid-late 90s I was a teen and more interested in smoking pot partying, and playing stuff like final fantasy 7, bushido blade, silent hill etc. But those 3(&K) games. They shaped my late childhood and early teen years. I recently got back into replaying them on Sonic Origins, and I found out it all came back to me, so I could beat silver sonic in 16 secs in sonic 2 and I could speed thru sonic 3 (although I missed being able to split the carts apart if I wanted to start from mushroom island). S3&K is probably the best 16 bit platformer ever made.
17:14 I've heard, along with Robotnik having a unique sprite for that boss fight, Flying Battery wasn't originally intended for Knuckles' route. However, when the game was split into two, they gave him that level so his route in standalone S&K wouldn't be so short.
I’ve been excited for this one. It didn’t disappoint. Thank you for these wonderful retrospectives. I remember reading about Sonic 3 coming in Sega Magazine back in the day and being so excited to get it.
You know what? Story time! You talking about the Sonic & Knuckles Collection brought back some memories that I had long forgotten. It was around the mid 2000s. I had been introduced to the Sonic franchise through a friend, and I played both Rush games and enjoyed them. I wanted more, and I had a very bad computer with which I started to look up games I could play. And the main ones I came up to were the classic and Advance trilogy, and I quickly went to download the latter because I already knew how to emulate GBA as a Pokémon fan. But I also wanted to play the classics, so somehow (the memories of how I got there exactly are long gone) I ended up with what I only can assume was a pirated copy of the PC port installed. And I never understood why, but the game went insanely fast, to the point of being borderline unplayable. I never understood why it was the case, over the years I came up with the theory that it was a mistake on behalf of whoever pirated the files. All these years later and today watching this I learn of the actual explanation behind this occurrence, which is insane. In the end I ended up playing Sonic 3 in its full glory years later, through the rom hack Sonic 3 Complete (which for the uneducated, since it wasn't covered in the video, was the main Sonic 3 overhaul fan project before Sonic 3 AIR overtook it), so in the end I was able to finish that game that had eluded me for so long, there was always this air of mystery around that one game where I wasn't ever able to get past the first zone because of the insane gameplay speed, so playing it at the intended pace lifted that out of my conscience. On a separate note, someday I want to read the Archie comics. I've heard so many things about them both good and bad (thanks Ken Penders I guess xD) so the curiosity is there. I only have read IDW so it would be neat to see how things used to be and how some ideas were possibly translated from one comic to the other.
Thank you for sharing your memories, it was a pleasant read! Heh, I reckon the game speed might have been similar to the occurrence with the Windows port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. And I realize I totally missed out on Sonic 3 Complete despite seeing it in my searches, because I thought it was just the name of an official compilation. 😂 There are plenty of Archie Sonic blogs and channels, Thanks Ken Penders being one of them! I know at someday I wanna make a vid on Archie Sonic and IDW Sonic, boy that will be a fun day. 😁
@RobotnikHolmes It absolutely was that problem you highlighted, I'm pretty sure. It's just that I never saw it properly documented until this video, and seeing someone explain it how it happened to me all those years back unlocked all these childhood memories xD Also Thanks Ken Penders being a literal review of Archie content threw me for a loop just now because I never heard of it. I only brought up his name because I know Ken is the reason of so much controversy around the comics and at some point I fell into the rabbithole of wanting to learn what his deal was so this is one of the most hilarious coincidences I could find out about.
I kind of wish the 3D games did more with unique and quirky badnik designs like the older games. Egg pawns and GUN robots start to feel old after a while. Great vid as usual btw.
Thank you, I appreciate your comment! As a fan of the different Sonic aesthetics, I can agree! I know they attempt these Badnik designs again in Sonic Lost World, though I think in Modern Sonic games I enjoy that sleek "blue eyes" look they did in Sonic Colours. 🤭
I think I've finished this game with all the super emeralds with every character several times and I never realised Knuckles' story is meant to be a sequel of sorts. I just assumed the Badnik was like Robotnik saying 'hey, that Robot is helping Sonic steal your Master Emerald!!'
21:59 I've also heard it suggested the prototype tracks were used because PC hardware at the time wouldn't be able to properly convey the "vocal" samples in the MJ tracks. The "original" tracks were then used in rereleases after that version and up until 2011. It wasn't until MJ's death in 2009 that Sega may not have had the same rights to use those tracks, either due to the Jackson estate or possibly Brad Buxor. I've heard he may have been the one after Sega for royalties.
@@RobotnikHolmes It is, admittedly, just speculation to my understanding. The MJ/Sonic 3 music topic is one I've been fascinated by for about a dozen(ish) years, so I've read some interesting theories and rumours on it. I remember The D-Pad once did a good video on the topic, though it's about a decade old now, so it is out of date. If I remember right, they did point out Sega and MJ were on good terms after Sonic 3, as MJ appeared in one of the Space Channel games.
I love that Mecha Sonic from this game and I hope I get to see it in the movie. I would love it if that was Metal Sonic's later form to pay homage to both.
@RobotnikHolmes at the end of Sonic 2, a woman tells Commander Walters that they seized all of Robotnik's equipment and research (paraphrasing). I think they started building Metal Sonic to counter Sonic based off of Robotnik's plans, and in the future he goes rogue like Skynet. But who knows what they'll do.
Alright, some things you said about the 90s inspired me to say some things as it relates to the modern era of Sonic. First, I was about 13 years old when this game came out and I was a "Sonic freak" (given that name by my cousin). I remember the Sonic mania (heh) of the 90s well because I was in it. I even loved Spinball and Mean Bean Machine. My perspective on Sonic was very much formed by a variety of interpretations of him that were around in the 90s. The Sat-AM and Adventures animated shows were very different but I loved both. I said all that because as you pointed out in the video, there were American contributors to Sonic 3. And now with the movies, Americans play another part in the legacy of Sonic. My perspective was and still is that Sonic, as he is now, is a child of multiple nations-not just one. As much as some people now want to enforce a singular idea of who Sonic is and what counts as "the source material", I just can't agree with it or understand it. Sonic could be a vagabond like he was in the Adventure show or he could be a freedom fighter like he was in the Sat-AM show. He could be goofy or he could be serious. But were still recognizable as Sonic. One didn't invalidate the other. I don't feel that the movie Sonic is in any way an affront to "real Sonic". Is it just me or do other people from the original series era feel the same?
I remember there was a SomeCallMeJohnny vid where he was talking about the beta version original songs and how bad they sounded but then said some genius ran those same songs through the Genesis/Megadrive sound chip and it changed them entirely to where they actually sounded good. That was what they were supposed to be going through to begin with, so it kinda tracks.
I watched his one on this game too. 😁 He went into WAY more detail than I could ever hope to narrate, but I suppose our vids are more a "two cakes" situation for eager listeners. 😂
when i played sonic 3 for the first time i thought the game was created in like 2008 or something because of how good it looked (compared to other games that ive seen). to me it was crazy to figure out the game is older than myself
While I understand why people think this, I think it's clear that it's wrong after you look at some details. Mushroom Hill is not changing seasons, it's losing its life and dying by the Boss at the end of the Zone. That's why it gets all its color back once you destroy it
I'm glad that you enjoyed the games. However, when it came to rom hacks, you forgot to mention one other: Sonic 3 Complete. I mean it's fine, but I'm surprised that beloved rom hack didn't get a mention. Otherwise, yeah. Sonic 3 for the classic era was peak.
Dang, thanks for letting me know! I had seen that while searching. Must have overlooked it after assuming it was officially made. It was that good a ROMhack. 😂 Will address that mistake in the next vid!
They need to hire some artists to write new replacement tracks for Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base that captures the essence of the 90's version of the game.
My best friend loved sonic 3 and knuckles so much i bought him a sega Genesis and a copy of Sonic 3 and knuckles he loved it and played it more than I can count. Now this game that I love now holds a dark reminder because my friend committed suicide Christmas 2024.
This is my favorite of the Classic Era, don't get me wrong Mania is good but it just can't beat the stronger storytelling and characterization of 3&K. I don't mind calling main villain by Ivo Robotnik since that is his real name or by vice versa calling him by his nickname Eggman. Though weirdly Mobius does bug me a bit, even though I wholeheartedly support the term Mobians for Sonic's species and Mobius in Archie and SatAM was just a future version of Earth anyway. I guess its because I really like how in the main continuity Sonic is set on Earth and how there is a mixed culture due to it, while the name suggests something more alien. One interesting tidbit is that why Hyper Sonic has not returned the same can not be said of the Super Emeralds, the make a small cameo in the past of Sonic Adventure and their husks that Chaos Emeralds broke free from once they returned to normal are found in Knuckles' route of Sonic Mania.
I never imagined the Chaos Emeralds might have been inside the Super Emeralds. Interesting! That would explain the cracked husks in Sonic Mania, even if they've only been addressed as stone look-a-likes. 😂 Golly, I'm certainly going to have to phase out the term "Mobius" by the time I get to the Dreamcast era. 😅 I suppose the point about it being more Earth-like and sharing the name will be addressed when we get there!
Water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water
Would also say about the music in the Origins version is that Jun Senoue's more "classic sounding" tracks are very hit or miss in the entire franchise. The music he composed for Sonic Superstars isn't well liked either. Man can make good music, just not in a Mega Drive/Genesis format lol.
Oof, yeah. I feel Jun Senoue's songs are fairly great when not working with Mega Drive formats. Also when he collabs with other composers and musicians! ✨
For the replacement music, I really wish they'd composed some new tracks that were more tonally consistent with the original release instead of the beta tracks. It's hard to say if it's nostalgia or simply _knowing what aural vibes those zones are "supposed" to have,_ but I just can't stand the replacement music.

It wasn't until MJ's death in 2009 that Sega may not have had the same rights to use those tracks, either due to the Jackson estate or possibly Brad Buxor. I've heard he may have been the one after Sega for royalties.
The plot thickens! 😮 With all that, I can see why Sega would double down on the beta tracks for Sonic Origins.

Nice i just found your vids and have been enjoying them a lot. So great timing with covering my fav classic sonic game! 🎉
Thank you for coming along for the ride! 😁
@32:48 made me shoot milk out my nose…well done, Sir 😂😂😂😂😂😂❤️🤘🏻

WATER! WATER! WATER! WATER!
WATER! WATER! WATER! WATER!
WATER! WATER! WATER! WATER!
WATER! WATER! WATER! WATER!
Water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water!
I love that Mecha Sonic from this game and I hope I get to see it in the movie. I would love it if that was Metal Sonic's later form to pay homage to both.
Duude, what if like G.U.N took apart Metal Sonics to make like a bigger one that goes haywire and takes the Master Emerald. 😮
Oh, absolutely agreed! Sonic can literally be any of those things and still be "Sonic", Japanese or western-made alike. 😁
Gotta love Knuckles the Enchilada, one of my favorite characters!! Also my second favorite game for classic Sonic next to Sonic Mania
36:32 Better than “Get Blue Balls”.
You will not believe how hard I tried to find a legit screenshot of that. 😂
Didn't have to wait long for a mention of your cousin 😂
😂 He was a part of my early Mega Drive memories!
when i played sonic 3 for the first time i thought the game was created in like 2008 or something because of how good it looked (compared to other games that ive seen). to me it was crazy to figure out the game is older than myself
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is def one of the best 2d platformers ever made. Its almost the Super Mario World of the sonic series
It very much is! Even in the way both companies tried to base games around it to bring back the magic (to varying degrees of success 😂)
6:03 Man, that's just ridiculous. Who'd ever take a green Knuckles seriously?
Ken Penders would.
You'd be surprised, actually! I remember when Archie Sonic ran with that idea, to varying degrees of success. 😂
Sonic 3& knuckles will always be the classic goat
Agreed 100%! 😁
Love you're videooo🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks, I'm glad to hear! 😁
While I understand why people think this, I think it's clear that it's wrong after you look at some details. Mushroom Hill is not changing seasons, it's losing its life and dying by the Boss at the end of the Zone. That's why it gets all its color back once you destroy it
Oh dang, that makes sense. 😮 Plus in keeping with the environmental vs industrial themes of Dr. Robotnik during this era.
If they could, that would be brilliant. 😄 I know a lot of very talented composers who made their own renditions on the Sonic 3 replacement tracks.
My best friend loved sonic 3 and knuckles so much i bought him a sega Genesis and a copy of Sonic 3 and knuckles he loved it and played it more than I can count. Now this game that I love now holds a dark reminder because my friend committed suicide Christmas 2024.
Sorry to hear of your loss, bud. At least you still have the memories of the Genesis and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. ✨
Just such a great game. I'll forever treasure my memories of playing it as a 9 -year- old in the 90s. Also where can I see that S3&K cartoon? ha
The S3&K cartoons were included in Sonic Origins!
The "endless mine" music sounds a little like the "city escape" song from SA 2
They did reference the track in City Escape's appearance in Sonic Generations! Classic Sonic was playable for that act. 😁
Angel Island falls into the ocean and has nice sandy beaches.
Island landing in the ocean = instant resort! 😁
Ah yes, the wacky European box art for the thumbnail. Wonderful. ;)
_[will probably post a full comment later, once I'm done with uni for today]_
Always appreciate your comments, Robertlupa. 😁 Hope you are well!
Golly, I'm certainly going to have to phase out the term "Mobius" by the time I get to the Dreamcast era. 😅 I suppose the point about it being more Earth-like and sharing the name will be addressed when we get there!
No views in 29 seconds, bro fell of-woah 1 hour video about Sonic 3 & Knuckles
😂
Rank SS for Sonic 3 and Knuckles I do agree. 😎👍✅
Love these vids of yours, man :D keep up the amazing work! God bless ya and Jesus loves ya :)
Thank you! 😄
I need a full version of that water song.
Water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water water and water and water water
I had NO idea you could push the spikes!!!!
Yeah! Literally discovered it by accident. 😂
I hour let's go! ❤
Hope you enjoy, friend! 😁✨
You mean flawless third goal?
yooooooo
😁
1:29 "GAME VIOLENCE: What action is being taken to protect you?" I wanna read this article so bad just to see how dumb it is lol
Hey, yeah, wait a second.. 😂
New rank should have been S & Knuckles instead of SS. No other notes.
The poor other games that would have that rank but not have much Knuckles in them.😂
6:01
Meanwhile at Ken Penders.
Strangest coinicidence ever, along with purple Knuckles resembling Ixis' Echidna disguise. 😂
If i remember correctly, Wonderman isnt that good, and you can tell it wasnt written specifically for sonic 😂
Maybe it was a good thing I didn't fully address them then. 😂 Thanks for your feedback!
American copyright law sucks ass
You didn't mention the level transition cutscenes. 0/10, absolute trash.
(Kidding, obviously)
I knew there was a detail I missed out!
Hope you have a nice day. 😁
