    Your comments on the 'dive bomb' approach really resonated with me. I was tending to spend a lot of time going through my cues while already on the bar and that led to hesitation. Watched this video last night and then had DL day today so I tried to put it into practice. So much less thinking and more just pulling the weight...great improvement for me. Thanks!

    The first guy has bent elbows too, like he's about to clean it. If he makes his arms longer (like hooks) that will drop the bar a few inches, to allow him in a better position.

    Thanks Bromley! You're right, not slightly built, about 6'4" 280. I've since brought my stance and grip in a little and I'll work on shooting the hips forward quicker. Also, I've only ever pulled double overhand, haven't really given mixed or hook grip much of a thought, but I'll be working on mixed I think. I really appreciate it brother!

    when it comes to setting up the deadlift i agree 100% with your statement in 16:20 , it feels much better for me when i grab the bar just enough where as soon as i wrap my hands around the bar it starts to bend.

    Thanks for the advice to breath at the top of deadlift reps. Tried it last night and I could really feel how much tighter I was at the bottom and how much more my hamstrings were engaged. Just have to mentally rework how I’m counting my reps and get used to more strain on my grip.

    What a great video! I started deadlifting about a ago year now (but lifting weights on/off for 15yrs). I am looking to try a powerlifting comp when I can get my numbers a little higher. Lots of helpful tips in this video & nice to see everyday people rather than just the pros

    i never thought of men's junk while deadlifting LMAO now i can't unthink it- funny i think i am shaped similarly to some of these guys but i tend to roll my shoulders back at the top of my set, i think i'll work on dropping that and maybe i wonder if that's preventing me from pulling more weight. thank you for the video!!!

      Lol to take it one step further, in football, our coaches used to yell "pecker to the pad!" To get linemen to shove their hips forward when hitting the pad. its like driving with a collision sensor.... makes you very aware of your position!

    The second guy with the little yank, with a deadlift bar that can be super helpful to get through the weak, not well braced bottom position.
    I have worked around it with a much higher belt position around my ribs and working on having a better brace in the bottom.

    First guy is starting with bent arms which is contributing to his starting position. Get those arms stretched out, straight and very tight using the bar to do so and starting positioning will definitely improve.

    Hey Bromley, I know this comment is unrelated, but I recently posted to your Base Strength FB page with my 350 deadlift. I am about to cut down because I'm pretty fat and I'm spinning my wheels recomping at this point nearing intermediate strength territory. Can you make a video on how to preserve muscle/strength in a cut, slow or aggressive, natural versus enhanced? I think this video would get a ton of views and would go well with your wide coverage of lifting topics! It's why you are my favorite lifting channel.

    Great video!
    Quick question on the dude at RPE 8.5 (solid pull BTW!). What's the purpose of .5 ratings in the rpe scale? So you could have gotten 1.5 more reps (using the 1-10 scale)? Isn't that the same as RPE 9 since, by default, you'd fail the second rep? Or does it mean that the second rep would resort to hitching etc to complete the lift. Just curious, would like someone's input.

      Generally, people will use that when there's some uncertainty. An 8 means I definitely could have done 2 more and an 8.5 means I maybe/probably could have done two more. I think it's also useful for high intensity sets. So for example, if I do 315x2@9.5 I know that I could not have done 315x3, but I think I probably could have managed 320x2 at the same RPE.

      Its rpe, not rir. Rpe 8 on a set of 5 isnt 2 rir my man, its a rate of perceived exertion. It just works the same on 10 rep sets by chance

    just looking at the first deadlift and need to comment, fuck that is bad, every part of it is bad. If your deadlift looks like this go back to square one and start over.

    I've been doing SS type program without cleans though cause my gym is crap, I got to 107,5kg dl after like 2 months, went from 63kg bw to 73kg, 180cm tall.
    The issue I have is that I couldn't damn lock out my last rep on the deadlift because I nearly dropped the bar.
    My gym doesn't allow chalk and in whole town not a single gym does, I am doing it with hook grip but it still falls out, I watched a ton of videos on it, my fingers might just be too short and my hand might just be too sweaty, I can't do mixed grip because of a scapula issue, the left side of the bar rolls to another town when I try to hold it lmao
    The question is, and it is dumb
    Do i somehow train for grip or do I just go ahead and use straps even though it's just 107,5kg? It actually went up easy for the reps I could hold it, but when it starts slipping my body obviously won't lift it, pretty sure I could easily go up to 120 if I could just hold it. My squat is on 95kg, very close to dl, mostly because I can't hold the damn bar

      Hope I don’t come off like an asshole, but I don’t get what you mean by not being able to do mixed grip? A lot of the time I’ve had trouble with it rolling forwards due to a weaker upper back. When I really pull my lats down I feel it all lock in and I never have a rolling problem. Maybe try working on that? Hope this helps Boss.

      you can do grip training multiple times a week on non-deadlift days. if your forearms don't feel like they're 5x the size and about to explode on your last rep of grip training you're not doing it right 🤣

    I'm confused. Lots of videos featured lifters deadlifting with rounded lumbar spine, and you didn't see that as a problem. How so? Isn't that extremely dangerous?

      If they can maintain that position through the lift it’s not horrible. Some rounding can be beneficial. I know my start is way better with a round. But lower back injury/pain history definitely keeps me from using it

    Will doing heavy deadlifts beginning of the week, light RDLs later in the week and then rotating chinups and cable rows every day (in the gym 4x a week) be overkill for my back?

      Aka day 1 dl d2 pu d3 cr d4 rdl? This really depends on what you mean by heavy deadlift, rep ranges, volume, etc. Ive done something like this before, but on lower intensities , and i doubt it was beneficial tbh.

      Wednesday - Cable Rows
      Friday - RDLs and Chinups
      Saturday - Cable rows
      I've done it for a while and I think my back is the strongest part of my body. I just don't see people doing it much so wondered if I was doing too much. I also occasionally do facepulls which are epic for my shoulder health. Currently i'm on a quick 10lb month long cut and the volume still seems okay. But wondered if i was unknowingly hindering myself despite good gains.

      @@Inty6 The split looks good, you can have the cable rows on saturday to be on a higher rep than wednesday to make it abit less fatiguing so you're fresh on next monday if you feel like to need to.
      If you're on a drastic cut, and didn't tweak anything, and everything works - i'd interpret it as a positive, it means you're training close to the minimum effective volume you need to drive progress, or you're an absolute beginner with a short training history, or both. cuts require adjustment of training stress so you won't burn out, unless you're a beginner.
      Idk how your squat blends into this, intensities , and what are your number, so again it all depends. make sure that as you progress you tweak to accommodate to the increasing fatigue from heavy deadlifts.

My deadlift max is around 200kg and my squat is MUCH lower (95kg for 5) due to having some problems down below (piles lol) that would flare up when I went heavy with squats. I've since hopefully sorted the problem out and plan to slowly climb up with my squats. Hopefully my other work won't get in the way of that!
      Yeah with the rows on the Wednesday i'll do a heavy 3x8 and then on the Saturday maybe take 10% off that weight and do a 3x8 with that so a little lighter.

      @@Inty6 I guess were in a somewhat similar position , both in DL and squat numbers and also with problems with the squat. tried many times, but heavy squats became too problematic. I've switched for High bar squats, pin, and lowered frequency and intensity, slowly building it, so far feels good.
      I'd be intrested to share with you my training spreadsheet via Google sheets, and also see how your progress goes , to see if I can learn from it.

    I cannot seem to find the sweet spot where my lower back isn't doing majority of the work. Switched to sumo because holy hell I couldn't play with my kids after deadlifting.
    The tip about breathing while upright, just tried it and it really helps to crank out few extra reps. Not sure why I was doing it other way around.

    Breathing at the bottom only makes sense if you're completely restarting with each rep and bringing your hips up like a fat man deadlift setup, which then only makes sense if you can't breathe at the top for some reason.

    Hey I noticed you used the Lord's name lightly, just as an expression. A lot of people don't know that using the Lord's name lightly, just as an expression i.e. in vain is a grave matter. It's one of the Commandments (the Second) because our Lord wants us to know what will keep us alive and what brings death. Using the Lord's name lightly without due reverence is a grave matter meaning if done deliberately and with full knowledge it constitutes a mortal sin....meaning if done with full knowledge and deliberate consent one suffers the loss of the life of grace in the soul/hell eternally unless one recieves absolution from a Catholic priest. Any way it's done is a mortal sin but it's even weightier when the holy name of Jesus Christ is used and if you don't say anything when someone ELSE does it or post content in which it is used you commit the same mortal sin via OMISSION or tacit/passive approval. Also God's existence is proven. They've taken the proofs for the existence of God out of modern DEeducation but the proofs for the existence of God are a staple in any undergraduate philosophy tract. They're called St Thomas's 5 proofs. You can't get to Catholicism via logic alone but the sheer existence of God and that He must for example be One, IS proven. Here's one. You see that things have a cause. If you don't assent to this you're simply a liar. IF you don't have a First Cause of all Himself Uncaused you have an infinite regress of causes of effects and never getting to the First Cause you never get in reverse logic to what you see today by neccessary result of this infinite regress. The infinity (i.e. NEVER ending of causes creates an insurmountable gap because if its inherent infinity insurmountable gap because if its inherent infinity insurmountable to suffice for the existence of anything you see that exists and has a cause of its existence. There MUST therefore by neccesity exist a FIRST Cause that is Himself Uncaused Who is God.✌🏾
