    Normally I have a very ambivalent attitude to this sort of thing. I'm 65 years old, a tutor/lecturer in music heard it all, seen it all and thoroughly jaded. Then things come along that blow you away. This is one of those moments. To dictate Oscar Peterson is fantastically difficult. To emulate playing him is similarly difficult. But here is a clear demonstration of skill talent and good playing. You can almost hear Oscar trying to break out of the piano. So hearty congratulations on both skills of listening and playing. Yes, hours of practice very evident. And a long time ago, whe I was a student of 18 years ago, I went to see the great man play at a place in Manchester England. I was shown back stage and got to meet the great man. I even shook his hands. His were very soft, I was shaking and gobsmacked. They don't make players like him any more. Well done young lady. I'm greatly impressed. Keep up the good work. Dave in Yorkshire, England.

      @@jparty "The studies literally show that it's just hours spent" Nah that's bullshit, have you ever played any sport, even e-sport, on a higher level? You'll see a lot of people spending all their hours and energy yet they are way worse than people with less hrs. You obviously need both, and if you can't see that you'll need some more life experience :)
      it's really easy to disprove tho, again: Just fine one person who started late yet is on top in any sport / art etc. There are literally a million examples, but only 1 is enough to disprove your "theory".

    • @dieterdohlen6386
      @dieterdohlen6386 10 месяцев назад

      @@jparty I knew you would say it's about the quality of practise, but then define what talent is. Obviously, a more talented person understands better how to improve and how to be efficient in improving. All your theory does is replace "talented" with "smart".
      The last statement is pointless btw. The ability to power through something and the ability to understand how to learn most efficiently aren't related at all. Hence all the examples of trying hard and not succeeding .
      Again, good for you that you found that book to help you, but replacing one word with another doesn't change the fact that it matters.

    for a pianist to have the technique to imitate Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum is certainly noteworthy. I think Robert Glasper's music will stick around. People should revere Hiromi's performances for technical virtuosity; so far her most influential are the early live duets with Chick Corea, which means you have to find another equally talented player to make a cover.

Once the technical ability of playing something like this is second nature, most of the work on learning a transcription comes from being able to hear it. Transcribing lets you internalize it. Fact: OP fell in love with a Bosendoerfer grand piano the first time he tried it, and after that encounter, performed on them in most of his shows. The reason was not the sound, so much as it was the FEEL. Bo's are known for their incredibly clicky, 'bouncy' style of action, which tailored to OP's playing tremendously. The young lady is 'bouncing' through this piece on a Yamaha upright apartment style piano, and while all their pianos sound great, the apartment and full sized uprights have always been notorious for having a STIFFER than normal action to them, in other words - a piece like this would be much harder to play, than on a Bosendoerfer grand.
    Being a professional piano player almost 40 years, I'll just speed this up and get to where I'm going: what you are seeing here is not just great. It is LEGEND.

      @@AndreaAustoni You're really ignorant and clearly have a very limited knowledge of Pat's range, stylistically speaking and obviously have listened to only a few of his more 'New Age-y' sounding recordings, none o which are representative of what he can do. Do yourself a favor young boy and go listen to 'Song X', the album he recorded w/ Ornette Coleman, or Better yet, Gary Thomas's ' 'Till We Have Faces'. Metheny's music might not be your cup of tea, but anyone w/ a minimum of musical intelligence would never make such a shallow and uninformed comment about his musicality. And on a final note, 'the king of elevator music' is called Kenny G. Get it straight.

    I hate to rain on everybody’s cheerleading parade, but I can always point several not-nationally known people in that age group who can play transcriptions like that, and some who can transcribe for them selves by ear nearly that fast. There’s possibly 10 freshman and sophomores at Berkeley in Boston alone, another 20 under 20 in New York City, and who knows maybe one in Turkey another in Siberia and another in Chad. Hard to tell. It’s unusual for most to encounter someone with this level of talent, but it’s a thing that I encounter at least a few times per year. yes, she is very very talented, but DOMI has other things going for her that have pushed her fame factor pretty high, pretty quick. At her age, Makoto Ozone and Aaron Diehl we’re at least that advanced, and that talented at her exact age, and I witnessed it myself. I’m excited to see what kind of music she makes in the future, but I would reserve the moniker ‘generational talent” for the likes of Jacob Collier, Art Tatum (who invented the stuff that domi and Oscar were playing), and Amadeus Mozart.

      If astounding technical chops drove lasting influence, we'd all be listening to bedroom RUclipsrs shredding Flight of the Bumblebee on guitar at 900 BPM or playing insane keyboard licks while solving Rubik's Cube with their other hand. Even Art Tatum isn't nearly as well known as Oscar Peterson because he never composed an entire song, and he predated quality recording techniques, and there are no color films of him at an after-hours club playing everything previous players tried at twice the speed and three times the harmonic invention leaving everyone else eviscerated and dead on the floor and the piano a smoldering ruin. Art Tatum is a scary god.
