A reference to the old TV sets, in particular the earliest Colour sets that got very warm and which some makes had a tendency to catch fire, by 1981 however, I would have thought most of those old TV sets were gone.

@@christopherhulse8385 I remember they were giving out such warnings well into the 1980s. By the way, I believe he's saying "...because of the fire hazard" - just not very clearly!

@@christopherhulse8385 goodness me NO ! Our 26" Murphy colour set from 1972 was still being used until 1995 when chlorine type fumes started coming from it when on for more than an hour! We had good service from that set 👍on almost daily for 23 years. It was replaced with a Sanyo which is still going good although the picture aspects ratio not so good for modern format.

At 8:42 - I get the feeling Bill had been sampling the Christmas sherry before he came into the continuity studio at Southern here.

Oh I guarantee it. I heard this from an Oddity Archive bit and in context it now sounds like he's attempting a half-assed Churchill impression.

Another great upload, thank you :) I nearly tuned in when the religious guest replied to the presenter's claim of having no evidence when saying: "Yes, in the Daily Telegraph..."

Poor Southern Television, on death row by this time in 1981, with only less than 13 days left on air.

“Death row”, you make it sound as if the entire company was a single person. All that really happened was some management and on-screen staff were made unemployed. Didn’t matter about the recession as people with both those types of skill are always in demand and walk into their next jobs!

Colour bars were sometimes used then rather than the test cards after closedown as here; although not much as far as I know. I am not sure about the BBC but I think that some of the then ITV companies did though too, perhaps not all though? Of course too, although Southern may have used them here, they did not on their last night as we know when they closed down entirely before TVS then started the next day at the time so too. Thank you of course!

The tone was high pitched too-not one that the BBC used as far as I know then so too?

More than likely they showed the William Holden film as a tribute to him as he died under very tragic circumstances a month before. Jasper Carrott advertising for Ronco, and the first time I saw that.
David Fountain may have looked at the Pope visiting Ireland in 1979 with the large crowds there and possibly had a point back then as the 1982 tour was a success but subsequent visits were less well attended, so it is possible that he was right in the short term but wrong in the long term.
