When I was younger, I walked past a couple who had their German Shepherd on a lead. I was just walking, not shouting or waving about or anything. The dog jumped up and went for me. The couple were very apologetic and extremely shocked that their dog could do this. Thank goodness it was on a lead.
Any animal can turn, but obviously bigger dogs can do so much more damage.

I’ve always had German Shepherds, while they were my babies I knew that they were very protective. I always used caution around non family. However; I once had a small female gs about 60 lbs. At 4 mo of age she became very aggressive and would lunge at strangers. I became very worried and of course engaged a behaviorist and got more training. Sadly at 1 year of age she attacked my other German Shepherd who weighed 90 lbs. unprovoked and out of the blue. We had to euthanize her, we couldn’t take the chance of her harming a child or another animal. Sometimes some dogs just aren’t wired right. It broke our hearts because she was so sweet and affectionate towards us. It was the right thing to do. I couldn’t put her up for adoption for fear she would be mistreated or chained outside. I still have German Shepherds, I love the breed. People should know and educate themselves about dog breeds and their needs before bringing one home

I agree. I have had two Staffies. Both been attacked by the dogs people wouldn't believe me if I told them. 1. a rough collie. Lassie wouldn't hurt any body would she. In fact that dog attacked mine twice because of the useless owner.never using a lead. 2. a jack russell not on lead.

I have an XL Bully, while walking him on a lead he’s been bit twice, once by some ugly Maltese mix thing and another time by a chihuahua! He didn’t growl or bite back. They didn’t have their dogs on a lead. No control, just idiot owners. I’m typing this as he’s asleep on my lap, snoring away. I’ve had many dogs in my life and I still have a Yorkie and a Min Pin and they all love each other. I’m also a foster mom for our local rescue so I get lots of pups in here and he’s so gentle with all of them. That ban is ridiculous and I feel so sorry for anyone that lost a dog because of it.

Some UK citizens have been watching the dog attack situation in other countries, including the USA, for many years. India, too, is developing a serious problem but it is very different in complexion (dog owners have wanted dogs, then abandoned them to become feral, so now there are these big packs of largely homogenised mid size mid brown (it's a Darwinian thing) feral dogs causing serious problems). South African domestic dog attacks - starting to catch up and looks like it might be following the USA line rather than the Indian one. Australia is following the UK model. New Zealand is experiencing a fairly unique issue, with owned domestic dogs, as several of its indigenous wild species are now facing extinction.
We need to be watching what's happening, to each other, in order to have any hope of avoiding catastrophe.

The standard of journalism shown here is appalling. The guy doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about and making judgements based on information which is ill informed. How about get an actual dog behaviourist on the show to actually talk about the reality of the ban. The guy talking here probably couldn’t even distinguish what an xl bully is if you put a range of pictures of different dogs in front of him. Why is the guy completely ignoring the fact that dog attacks have gone up 200 percent since the dangerous dog act was introduced? It simply doesn’t work - implementing a licensing model like they do in other countries is proven to work but tories don’t want to implement it because it’s extra work and there going to be out of power by the time it could be introduced.

Little Finger is wrong on this. Building up to this ban the media was showing photos of very unusual dogs, real XL dogs of 60kg and more and built like tanks. The reality is this ban is affecting dogs as small as 25kg, like my female 6 year old staffy cross that has never hurt a fly. There are far more dangerous dogs out there than mine. All the government needed to do was enforce castration of male dogs. Utterly pathetic.

At some point we will have to introduce character tests before granting dog ownership licenses. There will be far fewer members of the potentially lethal dog breeds (legally owned) in evidence after that. Decent people aren't constantly looking for ways to defer responsibility. In many cases, unfortunately, the domestic dog is exactly that - but these predispositions would show up in character tests.

He was in terrible shape so I had him for about 4 months til he was ready to be adopted. I adopted him because of the way he looked, I was worried someone would want him for the wrong reason. Yes there are a lot of people who want that look to show off their big bad dog but don’t generalize it. Some of us are dog lovers, these are my kids and I treat them that way. Ian doesnt know what he is talking about. Many experts have consistantly stated that the XL Bullies are no more dangerous than any other breed of similar size and that they have a similar temperament to many other dog breeds, they just tend to be more active. The reason that some attack is because of their owners and their upbringing, they are no more dangerous than any other dog of similar size.
Once these dogs are band they will just move on to the next dog breeds that are involved in similar attacks (that are brought about by their upbringing and neglect).
We need to ban the type of owners that cause these dogs to be aggressive and not the dogs themselves.
