      I think shotgun cleaning gear would be best for woodwind instruments then give them a blast with it. Perhaps they could join Oscars Groutch Band. See it on RUclips with Evelyn Glennie. She is a star.

    We have a trombone slide snake that we use in our school. It is also very good for cleaning both the inside of inner and then outer slide, since it can clean the outer
    slide bend where all the spit and water usually stays.

    • @daveburch235
      @daveburch235 2 года назад

      Before taking the slide apart to clean the outer slide tubes, as shown here, I run a flexible slide brush, a.k.a. a snake, through each inner slide and into the crook. I first run warm water through the assembled slude, and put a drop of Dawn dish soap on the brush. Gunk collects in the inner slides and crook, and will affect how the horn plays if not cleaned regularly.

    Te Awamutu's late great G Trombonist, James, the Apocathary used only the best alcohol to clean his slide. He turned it into vapour and breathed it through the instrument. I once saw him using silicone hand cream, pink, to chase away the water. The old B&H Imperial is now retired. Most likely a wall hanger. The notes came out with a 'thwack'. Rumour has it that the Christmas Carolling truck backed over the slide putting it out of action for a while.

    Great video!!! I would caution against the use of BrassO which had become too abrasive is recent years (in the USA) .I recommend Wrights Brass polish instead but would prefer musicians leave that to a professional repair tech. Otherwise fantastic video!!!! As a professional brass repair person myself I really appreciate this information. Too many students have no idea how to take care of their slides!

    I here you talk a bit about how there is no shops in New Zealand that you can just walk into and just try mouth pieces. But if you ever find your self in New York city this shop (151 W 46th St 2nd floor, New York, NY 10036) allows you to try a wide variety of different mouth pieces. And they also have some fun horns that you could try as well.

    • @Fab4Gamers
      @Fab4Gamers 5 лет назад +3

      Im guessing with the 6BS it is, I would say it is all town to personal preference, I would say go down to your local shop, see which mouthpiece your mouth and embouchure. My shop let me try out different mouth pieces when I was looking at a newer trombone. I hope your shop would be the same, some good brands for mouthpieces mouthpiece wise would be bach, Yamaha, Denis Wick (of course) and Schlike. I dont know if you will take my comment into consideration because I do not have authority I guess lol. hope this helps at least someone.

    The best slide lube i have ever used was a bit of old style Pond's Cold Cream mixed in water. Sadly Pond's changed their formula and the modern version will not work well at all. Does anyone know what the old formula for Pond's contained? A tiny two onuce jar could keep a trombonist happy for several years.

    i had a cleaning rod come with my old trombone back as a beginner.
    i didn't really understand how to use it so i just stuck it up the slide with no cloth and got gunk all over it, then i was swinging it around like a lightsaber and it broke, so i hid it in the depths of my case and didn't tell a soul.

    How do I lubricate a bass trombone with a rotary valve?

    • @GrahamSlam
      @GrahamSlam 5 лет назад

      Normal slide cream for the slide, get some rotary valve oil for the valve. You should be able to unscrew the bottom to apply oil. My Band director always recommended Yamaha rotary valve oil.

      wd 40 makes things work.

    • @ckeilah
      @ckeilah 5 лет назад +1

      James Parlane if it doesn’t move but it should: WD-40! If it moves but it shouldn’t: DUCT TAPE! :-)

    • @Markworth
      @Markworth 5 лет назад

      Please do not use WD-40. The fumes aren't particularly healthy, and no one else will appreciate them either. It also doesn't stay slick all that long.
      Little dab of valve or rotor oil on the rotor stem and under the cap followed up with some feisty valve action should get it going pretty well. If not, pull the slide and dump a bit (!!) of valve oil down the tubing with the offending valve(s) as close to half cocked as possible. This will get oil onto the side of the valve and into the casing, for sure. Follow that up with plenty of paddle flapping the get it worked in and any gunk worked out. If it was really bad, you might need to clean out your upper and and re-lubricate afterwards. Lubricating the slides is whatever. Use a thick-ish oil or whatever slide grease. Just something besides literally nothing.

    • @ckeilah
      @ckeilah 5 лет назад

      Markworth Speak for yourself. I love the smell of WD-40 in the morning! Also, I’m pretty sure it’s been well studied that WD-40 is almost completely non-toxic.
