    I was struck by Rygel saying, "Think of someone else for a change," when the crew was taking Pilot's arm. Pilot is a servicer. _All he does is think about others._

    I absolutely was mad/disappointed in them. It was cathartic to have Aeryn, the former Peacekeeper, basically call them monsters for what they did. Really shows how low they fell and, by contrast, how far Aeryn has come from where she was when we met her.

      Totally agree. This is the first of so many turning points for this series and also what solidified the ‘realness’ of these characters and the audience’s connection with them. No series before owls as narratively brave as Farscape - of course, many series since have used it as a template and owe their success to it.

    I like that John talked about Mengele instead of Hitler, like I think most people expected. While yes, it's more applicable to the situation since Namtar is a mad scientist, I think it also goes to show how John is different than a lot of other main characters in this type of show because he's not a leader, he's a scientist himself. So of course he'd think of the worst example from the group of people that he and Namtar and Mengele are all members of, which serves to make it a better dressing down when John tells Namtar he ain't shit. It's one thing to be told you're terrible at your life's work by someone on the outside, but much worse to hear you're awful at it from someone within that community who knows exactly what professional boundaries and ethics you've ignored.

    When this show was first airing, this was the episode that made me go from "this show is pretty fun" to "this show is like nothing I've ever seen." In the '90s, sci-fi TV shows were all very squeaky-clean and Star Trek-like. Seeing the main characters (because they're not even a crew, really) turn against each other like this, not due to some outside mental influence but just due to their own moral failings and conflicting self-interest, was unprecedented and absolutely blew me away. I was hooked.

    • @elvwood
      @elvwood Месяц назад +4

      Probably the farthest we'd got from squeaky-clean at this point would be Red Dwarf, but Farscape goes even further with the conflicting self-interest (though in terms of grossness the boys from the Dwarf are clearly in Rigel territory).

    • @dragonwolf83
      @dragonwolf83 9 дней назад +1

      You need to check out Babylon 5 then. It is another 90s scifi show that was not squeaky clean with a very good 5 year novel. Strong plot and character development with lots of exploration of philosophy and conflict.

  • @nachofilament294
    @nachofilament294 Месяц назад +23

    What's interesting is when you think of how often Aeryn is used as the foil for crew conflict because she comes from the Peacekeepers, so she would have the most warped sense of morality. And yet, here she's the one (alongside John) that is offended and upset by the strongarm robbery. One of the few true virtues of Peacekeepers seems to be loyalty to crewmates.

    A few years ago I was taking the train to get to work and back.
    One evening as I got to the train station back from work I found out that there was some problem with the tracks and all the trains passing through that station were cancelled for the day.
    So all the passengers went to the nearby bus station instead.
    Hundreds of people who were supposed to take the train combined with the people who would usually take the bus.
    Way too many people way too little buses, there wasn't enough room on the bus for everyone and each time you missed your chance to get on, you would have to wait another half an hour for your next opportunity.
    People would rush the bus the moment it got near the station, everybody pushing and struggling to get on in a chaotic mob.
    As I was waiting for my 3rd bus, a woman with a baby joined the crowd near me.
    The 3rd bus arrived and the process repeated itself - everybody kept pushing and struggling, giving the woman no space.
    I could rush the bus as before but I had to slow down and act as a living shield for the baby until we got on.
    Everyday normal people were consciously or unconsciously willing to squash a baby to not be late home an hour or two.
    Replace everyday normal people with escaped convicts, a baby with an alien with high regeneration and an hour or two with years or potentially a lifetime and this episode becomes far more understandable.
    It doesn't make it right but people don't always do what's right when they're desperate.

One of the things I really respect about the show was that they made the commitment that the characters would make mistakes, do things that would make each other (and the viewers) mad, and that things won't always be all better at the end of the episode. Love your other reactions, but these merited some gratitude. It doesn't get as much love as some of the other sci-fi heavy hitters generate, and that is a bummer because it has great stories, unique and multi-faceted character personalities, arcs, and the puppet work is spot-on. It's funny how quickly the viewer can accept characters like Rygel and Pilot being three-dimensional beings despite being puppets. Keep it up, dude.

    Again, you'll see this particular trick used many times during the show. "Namtar" backwards is 'Ratman'. Other characters seen later in the show (not really a spoiler), but 'Pissog' is 'Gossip', or "Mle", is 'Elm' etc... Oddly enough, many of those backward names tell a little something about the character without really saying anything at all. The best thing about season 1, is how each episode gives just a little bit more about the character's backstory. Its not an infodump, but just a little bit more to build the characters, in such a way of, 'Oh, I didn't know that about them' (or their species, etc.) Season 2, is where the story really gets going, but still we need everything in season 1, to get a good foundation of things to come.

    This is a great episode for reminding us that these really are aliens, with alien morals and ethics. Knowing that Pilot's arm will grow back, and being from a culture where that species is completely seen as servants, these aliens make a reasonable decision - - from that point of view. To them it is a fairly minor betrayal, like cutting off someone's ponytail because you know it'll grow back quickly. Crichton is the reason this group of aliens is starting to become better people, to develop empathy and unity. D'argo shows growth at the end because normally nobody would think to apologize to Pilot for such a thing. ROUGH episode, eh? But an A+.
