Mediterranean monk seal capturing - Fundación CBD Hábitat

In June 2022, a key meeting for the future of the Mediterranean monk seal was held in Funchal, Madeira. At that meeting, the authorities of the countries involved decided to create a network of monk seal populations in the Atlantic, as a measure to ensure the long-term survival of the species in the region.
Over the last few years, our Monk Seal Conservation Program has been developing the capture and transport methodologies to carry out this ambitious plan and adapting the translocation protocols developed by our colleagues at the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program, through several capture experimental essays.
