Not gonna lie. In my top ten, Rememberance and Fenric at least. I would put Battlefield as well if not for Ancelyn flying through the sky being utterly sloppy. The rest of it is superb.
I don't think everything needs to be categorized on top favourite lists, but this is a good list of episodes, and I was surprised that some of your obscure choices were some I didn't think people noticed how good they are. Thanks for this and I hope more people will find these episodes and watch them.
I remeber watching Daleks Master Plan (well listening to it) and just being so shocked at all the deaths (pretty gruesome deaths too) from characters you generally expect to survive. Though I couldn't imagine any of the other Doctors taking on someone who killed their own brother on as a companion (if you count Sara as a companion). I really like the Tenth Planet, mainly because the Cybermen are really interesting in that story and not just 'killer robots' which they tended to act as in later stories (new and classic).
I actually LOVE the anticlimax ending of Ambassadors. It feels really modern and mature and 'right'. Great choices here (even if you forgot the Gunfighters!)
It's amazing how well "Pyramid Of Mars" has aged and is one of the few Doctor Who serials that might appeal to a non Who fan or some brand new to Classic Who.
@@colinmcphan Speaking as someone who's just finished Brain of Morbius and only watched the Baker Era thus far i can tell you it is genuinely one of my favourite stories in all of Doctor Who.
Big fan of Pyramids of Mars also. Sutekh is such a great, imposing villain despite the limitations of his costume meaning that he essentially never moves.
I'm really pleased to see The Mind Robber on this list. It's just a wonderful, fun episode, and I love rewatching it. The scene of the Doctor f****** up the Jamie puzzle is genuinely hilarious, and the Doc's (and Zoe's) reaction is priceless. I suppose a couple of titles that I'd have on this list are: "Terror of the Zygons" because the Zygons are just phenomenal villains. My favourite hands down. "Inferno" is just dripping with atmosphere, and Brigade Leader is brilliant. "Caves of Androzani" is also a gritty treat. For McCoy, I might be inclined to go with "The Curse of Fenric".
10. The Green Death - Best departure for a companion and perhaps the best trivia for a Doctor Who story ever. Condoms were used to make some of the maggots. Only in the 70s. 9. The Chase - A guilty pleasure that's full of bizzare Suess-esque ideas. 8. Caves of Androzani - A great suspense story and the best final Doctor story in the show. 7. Frontios - The amount of hell everyone went through to make this story pays off. 6. Ark in Space - Quite a memorable story with some dark tones scattered about and the Wirrn are simple yet effective. Never has bubble wrapped looked so frightening. 5. Kinda - A great story that has a very suspenseful atmosphere looming over it and the concept of the Mara is interesting until you see the actual thing trapped in the mirrors. Good thing the CGI version looks better. 4. The Tenth Planet - A chillingly great story with the Cybermen reveal in episode 1 sending shivers down my spine. 3. Remembrance of the Daleks - Best Dalek story ever made with stuff the new show would find intimidating. 2. Survival - A fitting end to the classics and an emotionally charged story. 1. Earthshock - Pretty much Doctor Who at it's darkest and the Cybermen look amazing.
Good list but I would have to put "Genesis Of The Daleks" on the list as certainly a top tier episode and add some more Fourth Doctor story's as there were so many quality serials in that era. Glad to see "Ark In Space" getting some much deserved love and loved your assessment of it. Definitely has some wonderfully creepy moments and great atmosphere despite budget limitations. Plus the Doctors speech is one of the best ever in Who and agreed about the use of the bubble wrap.lol. God bless.😀
A cool list with some rather different choices. My list is a little more straightforwardly obvious: 1. Genesis Of The Daleks (My first ever Who story, so a good start!) 2. Pyramids Of Mars 3. The War Games 4. The Deadly Assassin 5. The Caves Of Androzani 6. The Robots Of Death 7. The Talons Of Weng-Chiang 8. The Seeds Of Doom 9. The Green Death 10. City Of Death It's also worth noting that this functions as my all-time favourites list... What that says about my relationship with new Who I'll leave up to you!
Speaking of the Seventh Doctor and Ace, has anyone hear listened to Thin Ice, Crime of the Century, Animal, and Earth Aid. They were stories originally thought of for Season 27, but didn't officially come out until 2011.
I have, they're okay. Thin Ice was supposed to be Ace's final story from the way the final played out but of course they just rewrote it so that she stays with the Doctor. Crime of the Century is probably my favourite out of the four. Animal was a little bit weird especially with the monsters and Earth Aid had a good concept but felt the ending was a little anti-climatic. Overall, they are fun to listen to.
I've heard all four. Now, Seven and Ace are my all-time favourite TV mixture... in extended fiction, it's Seven, Ace and Bernice, so that'll tell you how I fly my flag. But... didn't like these four stories. Really didn't. Wasn't keen on Raine. Thin Ice was a mess, Crime of the Century was bland, Animal was okay but Bambera was wasted, and Earth Aid, whilst best of all four, was not a patch on anything else Big Finish has done.
Huh, interesting. I've heard that the Virgin New Adventures do great at presenting the continuation of the show from Season 26, taking the series to more mature and deeper areas that probably would have been hard to accomplish on TV.
electricmastro There's a documentary on Virgin Books on one of the Doctor Who DVDs where they say that Bernice sleeps with an Ice Warrior and there's another with some excessive swearing from a character. So you know, a fun bedtime story.
Yes, and the Virgin books also gave us Russell T. Davies first proper Doctor Who story; Bernice as a character at all (which later gave us Big Finish - which in turn gave us Chimes of Midnight, Jubilee and Spare Parts); Human Nature was adapted from one; a continuing series where without it, Who fiction could have been trapped in a one-way nostalgia exercise. The Virgin series is not perfect but most of it stands out as some of the best Who fiction in history. Big Finish have adapted many of them now - the better ones, although many 'better' ones are set to go.It's easy to take pot shots at some of the lesser elements of them, but if we're going to do that, we can do that with any Who fiction or stream. I can understand the NAs aren't for everybody - we all have a Who stream we don't like (for me it's the 8DAs in the books, or the kiddy new series comics from Who Adventures), but we can't just say it's disposable twaddle. Every stream got someone into Who... and I wouldn't still be a fan if not for the NAs. Genuinely.
The irony of your point about watching Ace's adventures in chronological order was that Ghost Light was originally meant to be later in the season chronologically than where it ended up being due to references in Fenric.
1. The War Games 2. Inferno 3. Kinda 4. The Seeds of Doom 5. The Ribos Operation 6. Doctor Who and the Silurians 7. The Sun Makers 8. Enlightenment 9. The Curse of Fenric 10. Robots of Death I will never get bored of any of the above, and have watched them far too many times!
Really good list and "The Sunmakers" was a very pleasant surprise when I watched it. I know fans are split on it but my roommate and I really enjoyed it and other fans are ranking it much higher on there lists now and showing it some love. There so many other great episodes of Toms as well like "The Deadly Assassin", "Ark In Space" and "Androids Of Tara" that could be top ten worthy.
Pyramids of Mars! The classic show that has it all: time travel, evil from beyond the dawn of time, Tom & Lis firing on all cylinders, loads of scenes in the TARDIS, Michael Sheard - and no bloody Daleks.
Have to agree! "Pyramid Of Mars" is damn brilliant episode and one that you don't have to be a Who fan to enjoy. "Horror At Fang Rock" and "Robots Of Death" are also ones that a casual fan can love as well.
I'm glad you mentioned TGSITG. It really is an underrated gem and Ian Reddington as the Chief Clown, to this day, is still one of the creepiest things I've ever seen on telly!
Thanks for putting this together! Okay to put my thoughts on each pick?10-Part of me wants to treat this as a standalone episode, like Mission To The Unknown and have the 100,000 BC stuff as a three-parter, like Planet of Giants. I feel it works better that way. 9-I didn't know too much about this one, but I was really impressed when I watched the full colour version. Nice conspiracy thriller. Same goes for The Mind of Evil-two fantastic gems buried in the Pertwee era I think. 8-I LOVED the novelisation of this-it helped get me into Doctor Who full stop. Could not believe it when it came back (nearly all of it anyway). Personal favourite here. 7-Watched bits of this on UK Gold years ago (their omnibuses really helped my growing adoration of the show). Watched this fairly recently, and I thought it wasn't half bad. Prefer the previous story though-THAT one left its mark on me. Love it. 6-Got a healthy respect for this one, as it does show that literally ANYTHING is possible in this show. Quite surreal in places. 5-Interesting choice. Never read it, or seen any of what survives. You might have convinced me to rectify that... 4-One of my UK Gold discoveries. Far better than most stories surrounding it. In my opinion, should have been the 25th Anniversary story instead of Silver Nemesis. Fair? [Also loved the stairs cliffhanger!] 3-What can I say? First old serial I showed my new Who fan mates... Says it all I think. 2-Surprised by how much I like this one. 1-YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME...Currently sits with Power and Evil at the top of my 'Wish these would be found' list. Gutted when I learned how little survives of this! Really good novelisation though...thanks for adding this one.
Given that I agree with pretty much everything Stu has to say on Who, I'm surprised he doesn't mention my personal favourite classic Who story, _The Curse of Fenric_ more. Brilliantly written, tense, dark, well-paced, creepy, atmospheric and addressing some deep concepts about the morality of using chemical weapons to end a war against a mass-murdering tyrant. And above all else, doing possibly the evil piece of psychological manipulation ever done to a character in Who where Ace (a victim of child abuse) is tricked into loving and caring for their abuser by presenting them to her in the form of a baby. Forced to humanise someone who she's learnt to cope with by creating a barrier of hatred towards them. Come on… this is writing that transcends the usual Who standard several times over. No-one ever talks about this story. It's so good.
I remember watching Fury from the Deep as a small child and being absolutely spellbound. After the previous (incredible) story, The Web of Fear, I really looked forward with anticipation to the next adventure and I can even recall watching trailers a day or two before and feeling incredibly excited. This was Dr Who at its most mesmerising. (Sigh)
My list would be 1) The Unearthly Child 2) Dalek Masterplan 3) The Tomb of the Cybermen 4) The War Games 5) Inferno 6) Genesis of the Daleks 7) The Caves of Androzani 8) Revelation of the Daleks 9) The Curse of Fenric 10) Survival
Interrsting list. The fact that there are 3 McCoy stories included makes me want to stand up and cheer. I thought I was the only one who included Greatest Show in their top ten....but to see it here. My mind was completely blowm.
WOW! I seriously cannot believe this!! I was about to comment something around these lines: "OK, I got a little insight into the seventh Doctor´s adventures here in Germany recently and I don´t know, but I really loved the hell out of the "Greatest Show In The Galaxy" storyline!! It was so amazing, and I really miss it in any lists I´ve seen anywhere so far, very underrated imo! I´m sorry, guilty pleasure, but one of my personal all time favourites, seriously right next to "Listen" and shit compared to the modern era!..." And here you are, putting it at your NUMBER TWO!!!!!!!!!! You´re so my fucking hero right now........ xD
It's been quite sometime since I've seen Doctor Who Classic serials, and I haven't seen too many. I guess here's what I can give and maybe change it someday. Not in any order either, but I tried to pick the ones I remember liking from the 7 Doctors. I think you have a very nice list based on the fact that I've seen most of it and, and I'll try to check some of the ones I didn't since I've also heard that they are really good. 1. Inferno 2. Horror Of Fang Rock 3. The Unearthly Child 4. Tomb Of The Cybermen 5. Vengeance On Varos 6. Remembrance Of The Daleks 7. Terror Of The Zygons 8. The Time Warrior 9. Power Of The Daleks 10. The Caves Of Andrazoni
1. The War Games and The Ark in Space 2. Power of the Daleks 3. The Ambassadors of Death 4. The Caves of Androzani 5. Ghost Light 6. Pyramids of Mars 7. The Invasion 8. Doctor Who and the Silurians 9. Genesis of the Daleks 10. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy
Ten great stories. I've got Masterplan, Genesis, Rememberence and Web on my best list too, along with Inferno and Spearhead from Pertwee's first season. Other than maybe Power of the Daleks and An Unearthly Child (episode 1) I really think that Spearhead is the best first new Doctor story that the classic series ever did. Robot is good, Castrovalva is ok. But both Twin Dilemma and Time and the Rani have problems. The Invasion is pretty great too.
I agree with your list. Love Survival, An Unearthly child, Remembrance of the Daleks and I absolutely adore The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. It's probably my favourite of all.
What's amazing is that I know everything about Doctor Who. I was pretty much the guy who my classmates go to, when they have a question about Doctor Who, back in middle school. Yet, still to this day, I haven't seen Survival, or even Genesis Of The Daleks.
Great video. I'm suprised to see that there weren't any stories like The Ark in space, Pyramids of mars, The seeds of doom, The Deadly Assassin, The Talons of Weng Chiang or City of death.
Those are phenomenal story's and anyone or all of them could be on a top 10 list easily! The Fourth Doctor era could and probably should have its own top ten list or top twenty lisy even and it would still be a great list.
Great list there Stu! As usual on these videos I feel obliged to share my top 10 just to throw my opinion out there (which is probably why my channel is mostly top 5's!) 1. Inferno 2. The War Games 3. Power Of The Daleks 4. Tomb Of The Cybermen 5. Caves Of Androzani 6. The Invasion 7. The Daleks 8. The Time Meddler 9. Genesis Of The Daleks 10. The Deadly Assassin
Good list. I would probably put "Genesis Of The Daleks" much higher up though (just my opinion) and switch out a couple of those for some of the Fourth Doctor serials like "Pyramid Of Mars", "The Deadly Assassin" and "Robots Of Death" or "Ark In Space". God bless.😀
Probably...Sorry. lol. Can't help it. So many truly good or great Hinchcliffe/Tom Baker serials. Plus I've got a thing for tall 6.3" guys with deep voices, curly hair, big smiles, impossibly long scarfs and a great sense of humor! But I do respect you and your 60's bias and enjoy some of the 60's Doctor Who serials. That being said do you have an Orange Jelly Baby? God Bless.
Disliked because you didn't have caves of androzani in your list. How dare you have a different opinion and not like the stories I like! Unsubscribbed. Lol, seriously though, it's nice to see you had a few different stories in there, a couple of which I haven't seen yet. Most of the top 10 story lists on RUclips are just more or less the exact same 10 stories in a slightly different order.
I may be a few years late, but this is a solid list - and it's great to see some McCoy in there. Remembrance of the Daleks is an absolute banger (and arguably the best episode to watch if you want to get into Classic Who for the first time), but Greatest Show in the Galaxy is my favourite from that season. Fun, creepy, meta, and packed with nice ideas and great performances. It's definitely an underrated gem.
1 doctor The gunfighters 2 doctor enemy of the world 3 doctor ambassadors of death 4 doctor sharda 5 doctor Enlightenment 6 doctor terror of vervoids 7 doctor delta and the Bannerman 8 doctor 9 doctor boom town 10 doctor turn left 11 doctor Rings of akhaten 12 doctor Extremist 13 doctor War of the Sontarans
Hi Stuart! Please tell us why "Caves of Androzani" didn't make the cut! It seemed to have everything...great Dr/ companion combo, crazy villain in leather, gratuitous costumed monster, a doomsday clock in the form of the Spectroscopy toximia, and for the first time: and adventure with no sympathetic characters to help the Dr and Peri. The music was incredible, and the last 15 minutes where among the most exciting of all Dr who finales. And the best regeneration with all the companions coming back. It's my #1! What do you think ? Was it your #111 choice?
Alright alright I'll do a list as well... 1. Ghost Light 2. Warrior's gate 3. The Mind Robber 4. Remembrance of the Daleks 5. The Two Doctors 6. The Keeper of Traken 7. The Aztecs 8. City of Death 9. Delta and the Bannermen 10. The Web Planet
Awesome list Stubagfu, see isn't being mainstream fun? I really want to check out the Ambassadors of Death and Fury from the Deep soundtrack. My top 10 mostly consists of Tom Baker and Robert Holmes stories. They just stand out as contributing quintessential Who for me 10. The Ark In Space (Dodgy effects aside the sheer concept of the Wirrn is terrifying.) 9. The Hand Of Fear ( A B movie style plot with an emotional departure that did not feel jarring to me) 8. The Caves Of Androzani ( The cliffhangers for part 1 and 3 never fail to make my jaw drop every time) 7. Carnival Of Monsters ( Batshit crazy and full of creativity like the Mind Robber but with a bit more substance and intrigue for me) 6. City Of Death (probably the funniest episode in all of Who history all while having a plot with stakes and tension. Plus Paris looks gorgeous New Who should return there) 5. Spearhead From Space ( A daring new set-up for the show. Pertwee just oozes charm and the Autons are an ingenious invention.) 4. The Enemy Of The World (The discovery of this episode was the highlight of the 50th anniversary for me. I enjoy how it broke the conventions of 60's Who. Troughton's performance as both the Doctor and Salamander is really gripping stuff) 3. The Tomb Of the Cybermen ( It maybe dated but this story still has classic status. The Cybermen's voices genuinely creep me out and the touching words of comfort the Doctor gives to Victoria sums up everything Doctor Who is about). 2. The Deadly Assassin (Much like The Caves of Androzani and Heaven Sent this story puts the Doctor through hell by disgracing him and by sending him to the Matrix and turning him into Rambo. I enjoyed seeing the inner workings of Gallifrey's rotten to the core society despite it normalising the Time lords a little bit. It helped us understand why the Doctor left Gallifrey in the first place. 1. Genesis Of The Daleks (Well Stubag summed it up perfectly. I loved how solemn The Doctor is in this story he's far less jokey which really helped emphasis the stakes. I loved Davros's cold and calculating nature. I always get the sense that The Daleks were the most evil little shits in all creation in this story, maybe because the effects of the second world war were still being felt even after 30 years.)
I Love your assessment of "The Deadly Assassin". I enjoyed this story immensely from my first time watching it. I love the Fourth Doctor era the most out of several Doctors that I really enjoy due to the amount of quality serials during his 7 year run. Plus Tom seemed truly born to play the Doctor more then any other actor I have watched in the role. What I liked the most is how physical and dirty the Doctor got in this. The one thing I think later writers and Producers failed to capitalize on to some extent was just how physically imposing and intimidating Tom's Doctor could be. At 6.3" and given the size of Tom's hands alone his Doctor struck me as the one that could stand up the best to physical punishment and dish it out as well. He also seemed like he would be the most capable of physically defending his companions (not that the other Doctors couldn't). Plus you got the sense that Tom was always happiest when the dialogue was sharp and witty and he was allowed to get physical. What do you think? God bless.😀
I agree completely. Tom Baker's Doctor is the complete package for me hence the profile pic :) I also find him to be the most unpredictable, you'd never know if he'd talk his way out of the dilemma or resort to violence.
+Mikey McDonagh Well said about Tom's Doctor. I love how complex his portrayal could be. Unpredictable is a good word. I would love to see the current writers write for his Doctor!
A very unique list you have there Stu. That said I must now do the stereotypical thing of posting my own list in the comments without any context as to why some of episodes are on the list but not others. Because of this I'll be extending the list to 20 so as not to piss people. 20. Kinda 19. Face of Evil 18. Earthshock 17. The Robots of Death 16. The Dalek Invasion of Earth 15. Spearhead from Space & Terror of the Autons 14. The Aztecs 13. The Time Warrior 12. City of Death 11. The Seeds of Doom 10. Remembrance of the Daleks 9. The Curse of Fenric 8. Vengeance on Varos 7. The Talons of Weng-Chiang 6. The Ark in Space 5. Tomb of the Cybermen 4. Genesis of the Daleks 3. The Deadly Assassin 2. The Pyramids of Mars 1. The Caves of Androzani
So many good ones on there. I agree that "Face Of Evil" is such a criminally underrated story. Has so many great and interesting points to it, overall solid story that dares to be different and the scene with the Fourth Doctor and the computer that has part of the Doctors personality and try to kill him is one of the creepiest and chilling in Classic Who.....maybe even Doctor Who history in general!
1. Genesis of the daleks 2. ghost light 3. vengeance on varos 4. earthshock 5. greatest show in the galaxy 6. caves of androzani 7. mind of evil 8. terror of the zygons 9. The time warrior 10. the invasion (and just because I want to be different here's four more) 11. remembrance of the daleks 12. doctor who and the silurians 13. the seeds of doom 14. the talons of weng-chiang
Great list! Some unexpected choices, but not any that I disagreed with. Here's my list: 01: Inferno 02: Genesis Of The Daleks 03: The Talons Of Weng-Chiang 04: Pyramids Of Mars 05: The Seeds Of Doom 06: The War Games 07: The Web Of Fear 08: The Curse Of Fenric 09: The Ambassadors Of Death 10: The Evil/Power Of The Daleks (Technically cheating but I couldn't choose) Honourable Mentions: The Daleks The Daemons The Dalek's Masterplan Remembrance Of The Daleks Revelation Of The Daleks Spearhead From Space The Tomb Of The Cybermen The Caves Of Androzani And so many others!
To be fair to The Mind Robber it worked insanely well as a concept in the Big Finish 6th Doctor story Legend of the Cybermen - although I don’t know if you’re referring to the fact that the audio that was already released from this episode wouldn’t have held up, in which case totally fair it needs the visuals. This comment isn’t really a slander on your list, I love seeing other people’s opinions. Just thought I’d also shout out an excellent BF story if anyone hasn’t heard it!
6:27 - Thank Christ indeed: Reading the caption "Zoe, wearing a shimmering skintight body suit, is mounted atop the slowly rotating Tardis console - her pert arse thrust into the air" may have been enough to persuade me to trek to Nigeria personally to track down a lost copy...
I haven't watched much of classic Who yet, basically the entirety of season 1 and 2, and then going around picking and choosing some episodes here and there from the first and second Doctors' run, but I wanna give a huge shoutout to The War Games as I was SO intimidated by the fact it was 10 episodes and, while I like old Who, it can feel like it drags sometimes as someone who grew up in the early 2000s with modern television sensibilities. But I was hooked on it and watched 3 episodes a day and I couldn't get enough of it! Unlike other long stories, this one didn't feel like it dragged at all and I was having a great time with it!
There's nothing here that would surprise me for being on someone's top 10 list. Lots of great stories, though I would choose a bit differently myself if I made such a list. I don't personally care for "Ambassadors of Death" for example, but I have friends who adore it for solid reasons beyond the ones mentioned in the video. Some stories not listed in this video that I'd have on my list include "The Aztecs", "Carnival of Monsters", "Horror of Fang Rock", and "Kinda".
I love "Horror At Fang Rock". Great atmosphere and the Doctor kind of screws up and Leela has to give him a pep talk. Great to see that the Doctor isn't perfect and can't always save everyone.
Fantastic video mate. My personal favourite story of all time is Daleks Master Plan. I seriously could do an hour to a two hour long review on why it's so fucking incredible in my opinion. I agree that it has flaws, but the positives far out way the negatives. One more thing I'll say on it is that the Daleks are depicted as there best in it. Sure Power shows how manipulative they can be and I can sorta see why power would sometimes be picked over Master Plan, but for me this story is better for them just because it shows how fucking relentless they are; key example being the fact that they assemble a council of aliens just to get the time destructor completed and kill all of them off just so they can have it for there selfish ways in the end. I've experienced Master Plan like 17 times to this day and it's still pure gold for me. Listened to it 10 times in 2014.
10. The Silurians 9. Frontier in Space 8. the mind of evil 7. Terror of the Autons 6. Ambassadors of death 5. Sphearhead from space 4. The time Warrior 3. The three Doctors 2. Inferno 1. Carnival of monsters
don't hate me but... I really don't like genesis of the daleks. My reasoning: 1) I don't like knowing what the daleks evolved from, I really wish we'd kept that aura of mystery about what they once looked like, a race mutated by nuclear war. 2_ I really dislike the fact that the kaleds were basically just human beings, so many enemies in doctor who are humanoid/originate from humanoids and I feel like the daleks also being added to that list was a mistake 3) I dislike the idea that the daleks were created quickly, I feel like it should have happened over several decades of mutation and development.
Never hate anyone for an opinion on what makes art good or bad :) I see your point, I disagree but I see your point. There's actually an awesome bigfinish audio drama called I'Davros that kinda addresses point 3
Don't agree with you on Survival and The Mind Robber, and although I do like The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and do think it's a highly underrated story, I would not include it as one of my favorites. Loved episode 1 of The Mind Robber, but didn't care for the rest of the story, it's my Space Museum. Like your list for the rest though. And as for me, I liked everything about both An Unaerthly Child, all 4 episodes, and The Daleks' Master Plan, even the Christmas episode. I would also probably include Remembrance of the Daleks as #1. But for the most part, I did like your list. And I know everyone's got different opinions, I personally did liked your video. Thanks for posting it.
Hey Stu, Power of the Daleks is returning to us in animated form. www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-09-07/lost-doctor-who-episode-to-be-remade Hopefully Fury from the Deep isn't far behind!
The Invasion (2006) The Reign Of Terror (2013) The Ice Warriors (2013) The Tenth Planet (2013) The Moonbase (2014) The Power Of The Daleks (2016) Shada (2017) The Macra Terror (2019) The Faceless Ones (2020) We're getting there, Mate! We're getting there!
From what I have watched... 10. Terror of the Vervoids 9. Inferno 8. The Tenth Planet 7. Frontier in Space 6. The Stones of Blood 5. Logopolis 4. Delta and the Bannermen 3. The Ultimate Foe 2. Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1. State of Decay
Ambassadors of Death may be a bit flawed here and there, but it's a very pleasant episode and I would go as far to say that it's one of Jon Pertwee's best episodes.
Some of my personal favourites are... The Daleks The Tenth Planet Power of the Daleks The Faceless Ones Tomb of the Cybermen The Ambassadors of Death Inferno Terror of the Autons Frontier in Space Pyramids of Mars The Sun Makers The Leisure Hive State of Decay Logopolis Vengeance on Varos Delta and the Bannermen Survival
This list is by no means definitive but damn is it a good list. I've got a real soft spot for the caves of androzani but I can see why it wouldn't make this list.
i didn't expect Survival to be on there to be honest. i enjoy it too but it's not going to be on my top 10 too and it does kinda feel like the end as you watch it
What's pretty shocking, is I am definitely a: 'Doctor Who,' fan. If anyone I know has a question, about: 'Doctor Who,' they ask me. However, I've never seen: 'Genisis Of The Daleks.'
10. Genesis of the Daleks 9. The Aztecs 8. The Deadly Assassin 7. The Brain of Morbius 6. The Mind Robber 5. Spearhead from Space 4. The Three Doctors 3. Remembrance of the Daleks 2. The Curse of Fenric 1. The Sun Makers
"The Sunmakers" is a criminally underrated serial that is still relevant today with its theme of unfair taxation. Glad to see some other people giving it some love.
The Sun Makers is actually a popular one. I personally feel it's overrated. However, whatever your feelings are about it, and whatever my feelings are about it, I think you'll find most fans love The Sun Makers.
Some of my favorites: 1. Vengeance on Varos. Because of the bad rap the Sixth Doctor often gets, I find it important to talk about when he's good. And to me (and many fans), Vengeance on Varos is the Sixth Doctor's best. 2. The War Games. Yes, it has some issues. Yes, it runs long. And yes, despite the strong beginning and end, the middle is kind of muddled. But, for all its flaws, the War Games is amazing. It's Patrick Troughton's final serial (and the final serial filmed in Black and White), and boy does it go out with a bang. Also, we have to remember how important The War Games is. We knew the Doctor was an alien, but its here that we learn about the Time Lords. 3. The Three Doctors. So far, there have been four multi-Doctor stories (five if you count "The Light at the End" by Big Finish). And of those four, The Three Doctors is easily the best one. The chemistry and banter between Patrick Troughton and John Pertwee (my favorite Doctor) is great. Also, compared to the other multi-Doctor stories, the threat faced in The Three Doctors feels genuinely deserving of such a momentous occasion.
My Top 10: 10. Colony Of Space 9. The Brain Of Morbius 8. Remembrance Of The Daleks 7. City Of Death 6. The Caves Of Androzani 5. The War Games 4. Inferno 3. Doctor Who And The Silurians 2. Fury From The Deep 1. Genesis Of The Daleks
Yeah....."Genesis Of The Daleks" is brilliant and easily one of my all-time favorite story's! "Also love "City Of Death" and "Brain Of Morbius". I also like "Inferno" and would probably have "The Deadly Assassin", "Seeds Of Doom", "Planet Of Evil", "Pyramid Of Mars" and "Robots Of Death" on mine.
1. Genesis of the Daleks 2. The Five Doctors 3. Dalek Invasion of Earth 4. Tomb of the Cybermen 5. The Keys of Marinus 6. The Time Warrior 7. The Robots of Death 8. Resurrection of the Daleks 9. The Invasion 10. Marco Polo
While off the top of my head I couldn't come up with a top ten, I can say if I did one that I know The War Games, The Chase, Keys of Marinus and Tomb of the Cybermen would be on there
10. An Unearthly Child (1:52) 9. The Ambassadors of Death (3:01) 8. The Web of Fear (4:10) 7. Survival (5:10) 6. The Mind Robber (6:22) 5. The Daleks' Master Plan (7:46) 4. Remembrance of the Daleks (10:01) 3. Genesis of the Daleks (10:55) 2. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (11:54) 1. Fury from the Deep (13:13)
1.Caves Of Androzani 2.Inferno 3. Deadly Assasin 4.Earthshock 5. City Of Death 6. Robots Of Death 7.Remembrance Of The Daleks 8.Talons of weng Chiang 9.Dalek invasion of earth 10. mind robber
Agree about Mind Robber ( first full story watched) and Unearthly Child. I would have Castrovalva, ( Peter Davison regen story) and State of Decay ( later Tom Baker) on this list as well.
Despite it not mattering, I totally agree with five of your choices, but I can see why you chose the others. Choosing the partially lost episodes may be a bit of wishful thinking, but we can only hope to find out for sure at some point
For me there are too many amazing stories to rank a top 10... i just couldn't do it. Terror of the Zygons, Talons of Weng-Chiang, Wheel in Space, Revelation of the Daleks, Remembrance of the Daleks, Evil of the Daleks, Attack of the Cybermen, Ghost Light, Curse of Fenric, Web of Fear, Spearhead from Space, The Seadevils, Dalek Invasion of Earth, Seeds of Doom, The Visitation, Genesis of the Daleks, Fury form the Deep, Terror of the Autons, Mark of the Rani, Planet of Giants, The Mind of Evil, Robots of Death... Nah mate, i just love too many of them.
on the mind robber: It's not just that Jamie wanted a week off; he got the chicken pox and had to take the week off; that's why they swapped him out
Was he okay? I NEED TO KNOW!
@@tv6thdoctor946 of course he was OK, Frazier Hines came back to the show a whole twenty years later to play Jamie again
20 years... chicken pox hit him hard. 😂
Watched the first episode with Jon Perwee... never tought I'd see The Doctor run away from unit in a wheelchair...
3 is such a badass. I love him so much.
Stuart even hates Christmas specials in classic Who :)
Thank god Big Finish manages to get Stu!
So glad to see Greatest Show up there. One of the truly underrated gems of Doctor Who!
It's also so meta
Stuff Osgood and LINDA
The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is so much better and so much truer to the show
finally someone with 7th doctor episodes on their top 10!
Not gonna lie. In my top ten, Rememberance and Fenric at least. I would put Battlefield as well if not for Ancelyn flying through the sky being utterly sloppy. The rest of it is superb.
Agreed. I would have had Ghostlight in there as well.
Look, some things arranged into an order, that's popular these days isn't it?
I think so Matthew Santoro.
oh thats some burn.
It's just a social experiment
You´re so fucking awesome, man!!!!
Whaaat? No Douglas Adams stories? They are three best things in this reality...
My favourite classic who story, and my favourite story overall is Pyramids Of Mars, with Remembrance of the Daleks coming in close.
@@kanashimi4356 I like that story a lot also!!
Knowing we have vaguely similar tastes and not having seen old who, this is very useful.
God bless.😀
Linda Taylor Thanks.
The Greatest show in the Galaxy is my favourite serial and The Mind Robber is my second favourite.
A cool list with some rather different choices. My list is a little more straightforwardly obvious:
1. Genesis Of The Daleks (My first ever Who story, so a good start!)
2. Pyramids Of Mars
3. The War Games
4. The Deadly Assassin
5. The Caves Of Androzani
6. The Robots Of Death
7. The Talons Of Weng-Chiang
8. The Seeds Of Doom
9. The Green Death
10. City Of Death
It's also worth noting that this functions as my all-time favourites list... What that says about my relationship with new Who I'll leave up to you!
Phenomenal list. That list works for Who and non Who fans alike! Great story's in general.
1. The War Games
2. Inferno
3. Kinda
4. The Seeds of Doom
5. The Ribos Operation
6. Doctor Who and the Silurians
7. The Sun Makers
8. Enlightenment
9. The Curse of Fenric
10. Robots of Death
I will never get bored of any of the above, and have watched them far too many times!
Also "Pyramid Of Mars", Planet Of Evil" and Genesis Of The Daleks", for me, are very re-watch able. But very good list.
"Horror At Fang Rock" and "Robots Of Death" are also ones that a casual fan can love as well.
one of the best of the who villains: The Doctor under the power of sutekh!
Prefer
the previous story though-THAT one left its mark on me.
Fair?
[Also loved the stairs cliffhanger!]
3-What can I say? First old serial I showed my new Who fan mates... Says it all I think.
2-Surprised by how much I like this one.
1-YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME...Currently sits with Power and Evil at the top of my 'Wish these would be found' list. Gutted when I learned how little survives of this! Really good novelisation though...thanks for adding this one.
"A few holes I could poke if I were going deeper" oh come on you knew what you were doing when you wrote that!!
Greatest show has been on my "next to buy" list for a while. This has pushed it over the edge and is getting ordered now.
The Mind Robber scared the hell out of me (as a young kid hiding behind the sofa) when it aired in the '60s.
FYI, in The Mind Robber, Frazer Hines didn't want the week off; he had chicken pox.
Finally someone else who shows love for The Greatest Show in the Galaxy!
(Sigh)
Ian Strange wait were you alive in 1967? If you cool
It was early 1968! A great time to be a child.😀
I´m sorry, guilty pleasure, but one of my personal all time favourites, seriously right next to "Listen" and shit compared to the modern era!..."
And here you are, putting it at your NUMBER TWO!!!!!!!!!! You´re so my fucking hero right now........ xD
I used to have "Greatest Show in the Galaxy" on VHS, loved it.
1. Inferno
2. Horror Of Fang Rock
3. The Unearthly Child
4. Tomb Of The Cybermen
5. Vengeance On Varos
6. Remembrance Of The Daleks
7. Terror Of The Zygons
8. The Time Warrior
9. Power Of The Daleks
10. The Caves Of Andrazoni
1. The War Games and The Ark in Space
2. Power of the Daleks
3. The Ambassadors of Death
4. The Caves of Androzani
5. Ghost Light
6. Pyramids of Mars
7. The Invasion
8. Doctor Who and the Silurians
9. Genesis of the Daleks
Those stories shout have been on this list but I respect his opinion.
You know that if Moffat was in charge the Doctor would have timey-wimey his way to save Sara Kingdom
Katarina worshipping the Doctor as a God is strangely prophetic considering his Space Jesus status nowadays.
+HowlingSnail Amen
Random Moffat hate
[Spoiler]............... Moffat may not have done, but Big Finish did.
JeremiahEcks777 I've not listened to many Big Finish audios but aren't Sara's ones all just set between DMP 7 and 8?
I agree with all of these and greatest show is too underrated and deserved some love
No Talons Of Weng Chiang? How dare you Sir! :O
Great list there Stu! As usual on these videos I feel obliged to share my top 10 just to throw my opinion out there (which is probably why my channel is mostly top 5's!)
1. Inferno
2. The War Games
3. Power Of The Daleks
4. Tomb Of The Cybermen
5. Caves Of Androzani
6. The Invasion
7. The Daleks
8. The Time Meddler
9. Genesis Of The Daleks
God bless.😀
Linda Taylor So more or less you'd replace my huge 60s bias with a Hinchcliffe bias 😂
God Bless.
Linda Taylor Its fair enough, I'm the one with the 60% 60s in my top 10.
+Lord Slarr 😊😀😆😄
Got to get a like for having a bunch of 7th doctor stories in the list!
I was gonna do list, then I changed my mind. But I did find Ambassadors spooky when I saw it age 10.
1 doctor The gunfighters
2 doctor enemy of the world
3 doctor ambassadors of death
4 doctor sharda
5 doctor Enlightenment
6 doctor terror of vervoids
7 doctor delta and the Bannerman
8 doctor
9 doctor boom town
10 doctor turn left
11 doctor Rings of akhaten
12 doctor Extremist
13 doctor War of the Sontarans
1. Ghost Light
2. Warrior's gate
3. The Mind Robber
4. Remembrance of the Daleks
5. The Two Doctors
6. The Keeper of Traken
7. The Aztecs
8. City of Death
9. Delta and the Bannermen
10. The Web Planet
Awesome list Stubagfu, see isn't being mainstream fun? I really want to check out the Ambassadors of Death and Fury from the Deep soundtrack. My top 10 mostly consists of Tom Baker and Robert Holmes stories. They just stand out as contributing quintessential Who for me
10. The Ark In Space (Dodgy effects aside the sheer concept of the Wirrn is terrifying.)
9. The Hand Of Fear ( A B movie style plot with an emotional departure that did not feel jarring to me)
8. The Caves Of Androzani ( The cliffhangers for part 1 and 3 never fail to make my jaw drop every time)
7. Carnival Of Monsters ( Batshit crazy and full of creativity like the Mind Robber but with a bit more substance and intrigue for me)
6. City Of Death (probably the funniest episode in all of Who history all while having a plot with stakes and tension. Plus Paris looks gorgeous New Who should return there)
5. Spearhead From Space ( A daring new set-up for the show. Pertwee just oozes charm and the Autons are an ingenious invention.)
4. The Enemy Of The World (The discovery of this episode was the highlight of the 50th anniversary for me. I enjoy how it broke the conventions of 60's Who. Troughton's performance as both the Doctor and Salamander is really gripping stuff)
Mikey McDonagh I'd rather watch furry from the deep ;)))))))))))))) (I'm so sorry)
A very unique list you have there Stu. That said I must now do the stereotypical thing of posting my own list in the comments without any context as to why some of episodes are on the list but not others. Because of this I'll be extending the list to 20 so as not to piss people.
20. Kinda
19. Face of Evil
18. Earthshock
17. The Robots of Death
16. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
15. Spearhead from Space & Terror of the Autons
14. The Aztecs
13. The Time Warrior
12. City of Death
11. The Seeds of Doom
10. Remembrance of the Daleks
9. The Curse of Fenric
8. Vengeance on Varos
7. The Talons of Weng-Chiang
6. The Ark in Space
5. Tomb of the Cybermen
4. Genesis of the Daleks
3. The Deadly Assassin
2. The Pyramids of Mars
Rememberance of the Daleks is my personal favorite
1. Genesis of the daleks
2. ghost light
3. vengeance on varos
4. earthshock
5. greatest show in the galaxy
6. caves of androzani
7. mind of evil
8. terror of the zygons
9. The time warrior
10. the invasion
(and just because I want to be different here's four more)
11. remembrance of the daleks
12. doctor who and the silurians
13. the seeds of doom
14. the talons of weng-chiang
I love ghost light. It's such a different type of story and so underrated.
Great list! Some unexpected choices, but not any that I disagreed with. Here's my list:
01: Inferno
02: Genesis Of The Daleks
03: The Talons Of Weng-Chiang
04: Pyramids Of Mars
05: The Seeds Of Doom
06: The War Games
07: The Web Of Fear
08: The Curse Of Fenric
09: The Ambassadors Of Death
10: The Evil/Power Of The Daleks (Technically cheating but I couldn't choose)
Honourable Mentions:
The Daleks
The Daemons
The Dalek's Masterplan
Remembrance Of The Daleks
Revelation Of The Daleks
Spearhead From Space
The Tomb Of The Cybermen
The Caves Of Androzani
And so many others!
I'm surprised you haven't put Enemy of the World in it. Anyway, I agree with most of the points even though there are best episodes than these.
...and Fury from the Deep was even more terrifying!!!
Thought Spearhead From Space shouldve been on here, but great none the less.
Too many good stories to remember them all, and I wouldn't want to even try the insurmountable task of ranking one against another.
good choice of story's and your absolutely right about Fury from the deep - Classic Who at its best
That doctor who youtuber called Billy really likes ambassadors of death
Yes that Billy
Go get me some food?
Fury animated? Little did he know.......
I was scared by The Mind Robber at the time, notably the exploding TARDIS, and the Unicorn attack.
Great list, although I would put "The Invasion" in place of "The Web of Fear. (But that's probably because I don't live in London)
No one remembers the tomb of the cybermen ;-; sad days.
Yes me too, this one has to be found.
10. The Silurians
9. Frontier in Space
8. the mind of evil
7. Terror of the Autons
6. Ambassadors of death
5. Sphearhead from space
4. The time Warrior
3. The three Doctors
2. Inferno
1. Carnival of monsters
don't hate me but... I really don't like genesis of the daleks.
My reasoning:
1) I don't like knowing what the daleks evolved from, I really wish we'd kept that aura of mystery about what they once looked like, a race mutated by nuclear war.
2_ I really dislike the fact that the kaleds were basically just human beings, so many enemies in doctor who are humanoid/originate from humanoids and I feel like the daleks also being added to that list was a mistake
3) I dislike the idea that the daleks were created quickly, I feel like it should have happened over several decades of mutation and development.
Never hate anyone for an opinion on what makes art good or bad :)
I see your point, I disagree but I see your point. There's actually an awesome bigfinish audio drama called I'Davros that kinda addresses point 3
enjoying your doctor who vids. Weird tho i can't stop hearing Garth Marenghi.
You said season 26 was the most consistent in Old Who.
Just curious, what do you think is the most consistent series of New Who?
I would have to say a couple of Tom Baker's seasons were more consistent even then season 26 (Which was pretty good).
I think Series 1 is the most perfect in terms of story and character arcs and consistent quality

Hopefully Fury from the Deep isn't far behind!
The Invasion (2006)
The Reign Of Terror (2013)
The Ice Warriors (2013)
The Tenth Planet (2013)
The Moonbase (2014)
The Power Of The Daleks (2016)

9. Inferno
8. The Tenth Planet
7. Frontier in Space
6. The Stones of Blood
5. Logopolis
4. Delta and the Bannermen
3. The Ultimate Foe
2. Invasion of the Dinosaurs
1. State of Decay
What about The War Games?
Ambassadors of Death may be a bit flawed here and there, but it's a very pleasant episode and I would go as far to say that it's one of Jon Pertwee's best episodes.
I love your choices and wish I could see Master plan and fury!
Some of my personal favourites are...
The Daleks
The Tenth Planet
Power of the Daleks
The Faceless Ones
Tomb of the Cybermen
The Ambassadors of Death
Inferno
Terror of the Autons
Frontier in Space
Pyramids of Mars
The Sun Makers
The Leisure Hive
State of Decay
Logopolis
Vengeance on Varos
Delta and the Bannermen
Survival
This list is by no means definitive but damn is it a good list. I've got a real soft spot for the caves of androzani but I can see why it wouldn't make this list.
Are you going to do
Top 10 best big finish
Yes I know you kinda already have but still
i didn't expect Survival to be on there to be honest. i enjoy it too but it's not going to be on my top 10 too and it does kinda feel like the end as you watch it
What's pretty shocking, is I am definitely a: 'Doctor Who,' fan. If anyone I know has a question, about: 'Doctor Who,' they ask me. However, I've never seen: 'Genisis Of The Daleks.'
@Stubagful Are you ever going to do a video on the missing stories, a retrospective maybe?
I watched "An Unearthly Child" on the day it was released...
10. Genesis of the Daleks
9. The Aztecs
8. The Deadly Assassin
7. The Brain of Morbius
6. The Mind Robber
5. Spearhead from Space
4. The Three Doctors
3. Remembrance of the Daleks
2. The Curse of Fenric
The Deadly Assassin would be dramatically higher up on the list for me
+Amir Pourghoureiyan Me too! Such a great episode and Tom looked great dirty and beat up! You could tell he loved making "The Deadly Assassin".
I love the sunmakers
Some of my favorites:
CrazyFunTVMovieGuy fuck yeah Inferno and The Silurians, they're both part of my favourite series of DW
An excellent list, beautifully presented. XXXX
1. Genesis of the Daleks
2. The Five Doctors
3. Dalek Invasion of Earth
4. Tomb of the Cybermen
5. The Keys of Marinus
6. The Time Warrior
7. The Robots of Death
8. Resurrection of the Daleks
9. The Invasion
10. Marco Polo
While off the top of my head I couldn't come up with a top ten, I can say if I did one that I know The War Games, The Chase, Keys of Marinus and Tomb of the Cybermen would be on there
My top ten would have to include some Tom Baker. Tom had some absolutely BRILLIANT story's!
10. An Unearthly Child (1:52)
9. The Ambassadors of Death (3:01)
8. The Web of Fear (4:10)
7. Survival (5:10)
6. The Mind Robber (6:22)
5. The Daleks' Master Plan (7:46)
4. Remembrance of the Daleks (10:01)
3. Genesis of the Daleks (10:55)
2. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (11:54)
1. Fury from the Deep (13:13)

4.Earthshock
5. City Of Death
6. Robots Of Death
7.Remembrance Of The Daleks
8.Talons of weng Chiang
9.Dalek invasion of earth
Mind robbers is one of my favorites cause it was the first one I saw but It is also really good without that
I agree with Ambassadors of death. Great story.
