  • Just wanted to drop a quick description down here. Great conversation with John from JM Audio. I really enjoy what he is doing.
    Here's his website:
    www.jmaudioedit...
He wanted me to mention that he believes he mispoke and that Abyss uses some sort of porous aluminum, not carbon. His method is different from theirs with a different material.
Hope you enjoy our talk. Cheers!

I was in correspondence with John earlier this year before I lost my job due to my addiction, of which I went to treatment for and am in recovery. Having said that, now I am finally able to purchase a set soon and at the time we emailed back and forth, while I’m sure I sounded so tweeked out and just a mess, he was soooooooo understanding and quick to reply to me. I had my eyes on a certain set and he actually offered me an open back(or closed back, I can’t remember) XTC that was a mistake he made bc it was supposed to be the other way( he’s human, there’s proof lol) for a damn fine deal and I hate I wasn’t able to buy them at the time.
For that kindness and for the fact he treated me like a normal human being when I was at my lowest, he’ll be getting my business as soon as I can save up the cash to purchase.
Thanks for the kindness, John, it did not go unnoticed and I’m grateful!
    Peace within chaos,
    Nate

Love both of my XTC Opens! Ever get caught up in a song with your eyes closed, listening to and feeling the music, and get the sensation that you are swimming in the music? It's swirling around you and through you and you wouldn't care if you were able to actually drown in it? That's the sensation I get with these headphones. I feel like I become one with the music and never want to leave. Thanks to John for creating quite possibly the best headphones in the world.

Would you like me to custom make the parts and charge the same price as ZMF ? I customize the drivers and designs for as cheap as possible and hand craft the tuning. I plan on making all in house but the price will likely be much higher - for now I try to custom tune each set for the lowest price possible - the proof is how satisfied my customers are in how they sound - go to the grocery store and buy ingredients doesn’t make you a five star chef - JM

@@adamrodny2323 you speak from ignorance. It's not about the parts, whether from China or anywhere else, but the complete design.
Most manufacturers will not spend a penny more than necessary, and Material sourcing is always looked upon for the lowest cost.
So to "tune" their headphones, most won't spend a penny more, and only resort to tunning with only baffle porting, and so driver dust cover paper is the only thing you will see inside their empty hollow cups (commercial headphones).
Then we have designers who do nice headbands, ear shaped designs, OR others with fancy wood cups choices , OR those big planar designs.
They all a hit or miss at thousands of dollars, and all sounding so different from each other, while none sounding exceptional, except for very very few. Why? Because designers are not sound engineers and just way too many variables in every step of the way.
A person with studio engineering skills (which are taught sound shaping skills), are the best headphone designers, which means John has the edge, which makes sense he would concieve his fractal design..
This is why we have so many pretty and expensive headphones out there, that have quirks and are mediocre in sound, because their designers are not studio engineers.

I have a pair of XTC Opens and I loved them! Very gorgeous and they sound phenomenal! John is also a very great person to work with, would recommend people to check out his work! I wouldn't mind trying out some other tunings though, especially as I develop my own preference. One tip for John would be to maybe improve the round metal piece for the part that actually attaches to the headphone, that part to me at least seems like it could use a slight quality bump.

Love my XTC Opens. Super detailed, yet sounds very elegant, like silk. Got these as my first open backs and will never buy any headphones again (thats how good they sound), only amps and DACs to experiment with, as these headphones are so transparent that small changes in source material with give a whole different musical experience.

I’ve seen those headphones around on headfi and Reddit and I’m curious to buy one but idk, I’m the type of guy who just wants to see the graph before committing and I’ve never seen one graph from any of the different tunings and drivers that he offers and I don’t want the graph to see if it sticks to a certain target, I don’t care about that, I just want to compare to what I have and see what I’m getting myself into before committing to it because if I don’t like it, it’s going to be difficult to sell it online because people don’t want to commit either.

I offer retunings and as I stated I usually have a conversation with the new owners to determine their likes and dislikes from previous headphones - for instance one guy wanted me to have the clarity and speed of his STAX SR009 with more upper extension and slightly more bass and well - he claims I nailed it- no graphs- people dont hear by graphs they hear with their ears and that is what I do differently- how can you say you want your headphone to sound like a graph- most people cant read a graph and pick apart what they like or dislike in it - for me its more difficult to pull that information from a user than comparisons of what they like and dislike.. You tell me I like the way X Guitar sounds and I will know what that person likes and dislikes about that said guitar and why- based on their gear and try my best and if I fail at that tuning they can send back - really simple and easy - not sure if people need a 1000 graphs of all my tunings for each persons tastes
