I had tears...there's something about this old time song that magnifies the majesty that is New York and with all that had happen that month, this song shows that the spirit never died.
Was at that game. It's a privilege for me to say that. That crowd after Mike Piazza hit that home run is something that I will never forget, even though I was very young. Also, shout out to Jay Payton.
My dad and I watched this at a bar in Hoboken and cried. We had just left ground zero that afternoon to what amounted to a "time to give up the search" for my little sister. We decided to end a shitty day with a steak, some beers and a Mets game. Didn't expect a moment like that one. It got us through to the next day.
Best thing about this clip is that Liza Minnelli took the time, and the energy. to pay tribute to NY, after such a tragedy.....Thank you for posting, never saw this one....
I was at this game with my then girlfriend now wife and friends as well. Looking back at it - that night was perfect in a city and country that no longer made sense. Diana and Liza sang live versions of classics that were made new classics and Piazza hit one of if not the most memorable Nyc homeruns in the city's history. Can't believe its been 14 years. Never forget.
That makes sence, looked like she had some difficulties with walking, I didn't know that has been in pain and partly in wheelchair for so many years, really sad. Such an incredible voice, no one sings this song like Liza..
Im a canuck and have been to New York, went to a Mets game and saw broadway. Ill say this...unlike the movies and all the negative press I found New Yorkers to be the friendliest , nicest people Ive met travelling. I Love New York! My heart was broken on 9-11 but this video shows you are the greatest city I know. Hope to come back and show my daughter some day!
When I watch this, it gives me hope that America despite what happened in the past or present and at times we might disagree but in times of need we come together as Americans. I hope whoever reads this if they are having a bad time and lost faith in the world remember, deep down we're all the same. Things eventually will gets better because we been through so much worse things as a Nation.
Thanks for this. I get goose bumps al over again. It was such a dark time here in NYC and this right here provided a bit of hope & inspiration to us all
Too bad she told the New York Yankees to stop playing her version of the song at Yankee Stadium. They used to play her rendition of the song after every home game that they lost, and would play Frank Sinatra’s version after every home game win. When she found out about this several years ago, she was upset, and said they had to always play her version or don’t play it at all, and so that’s why you always hear Frank Sinatra’s version after every game at Yankee Stadium, win or lose.
It tells a lot about who we are as Americans that just after 9/11 to have love and compassion for All those in NYC and beyond that remember that faithful day.
Gosh darn it just like her mother Judy Garland she made me cry, why , when Judy sang Over The Rainbow I cried like a baby and when she sang have yourself a merry little christmas in Meet in St.Louis, Liza made me cry when she hit that high note ,Sinatra's version also makes me cry I am such a baby I always get emotional whenever I hear Bing Crosby sing, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand,Liza and especially Judy Garland because there is something so hear warming about standards.
The biggest sing along I've ever seen! WAY TO GO our Liza with a Z! Who doesn't know the lyrics to that song I wanna know. That's right up there with The National Anthem.Nuff said.
These aren't just Americans ,these are the people that have to go thru things yearly most people can't go thru in a lifetime. Makes Me proud to be a Born New Yorker. Go Mets! USA TILL I DIE
looks like osama and his cavemen disliked this 3 times before he got JACKED UP by US navy special forces! 10 years later, WERE STILL STANDING. proud to be an american
TreborHG_93 Yessss! I got a kick out of fhe Met batter taking warm up swings while Liza was belting it out to the cheap seats. He was wearing #44 but I don't know who is was.
The raw emotion from Liza, the crowd and the city made this one of the best performances of any song EVER!

I nearly lost it when the NYPD formed a chorus line behind Liza. Goosebumps and tears... lots of em'.
RIGHT?!?
Before this it was rare to see NYPD and FDNY near each other much less locking arms. Quite a moment.
For me the two signs did of *WTC* and *AMERICA* acronym.
Honestly, this is probably one of the greatest baseball moments ever.
Jay Quintana Wonder whether people in New York City still have as much love and respect for the Star-Spangled Banner as they did in 2001.🇺🇸
@@dvchel they don’t unfortunately. That city is more separated now than it ever has been. I worked in NYC up until last week. Place is in bad shape
@@jamesps7515 Times change, get left behind and wallow in your self-pity.

Nothing more appropriate than Howie Rose in the broadcast booth.
One of the most moving moments in my life. Boy did that game mean something to us all.

What an icon! She lifted the spirits of the people and united us as Americans with this beautiful song.
That final "YORK" was spot on perfect! Gave me chills that night at the stadium and ever since. I❤NY
Im standing on a platform 22 years later, waiting for an A train, and tearing up. We really came together, didn’t we. I❤NY

Liza- my hero and inspiration!
I have loved that woman all my life. This brought tears to my eyes 13 years later.
0:20 most people don’t realize that she was came in a wheel chair. She was in pain singing this song. One of the greatest performances of all time
That makes sence, looked like she had some difficulties with walking, I didn't know that has been in pain and partly in wheelchair for so many years, really sad. Such an incredible voice, no one sings this song like Liza..
Wow I never knew. Thanks for pointing that out.

We were glad to have you. Come back any time.
I love how Liza doesn't even have to try. Everyone will love everything she does no matter what.
You’re right-she could just stand there, and the stadium would ignite!!!
Made me tear up. :) Proud to be a born & raised New Yorker.
Liza single handedly got the city back on its feet. What an angel~
Mike Piazza wants a word an inning later
I remember watching this live.. Very touching, and I loved that random Scottish flag in the crowd.

Really nice to see the fire fighters having some fun out there.

There are not enough superlatives to describe just how good Liza is.
son of Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush who spent a Day at the Races one time?
Sorry Frank, she will always be the best singer of this song!

I’m a huge Yankees fan but I respectfully disagree
NEW YORK , NEW YORK was written for and originally recorded by Liza, after all.
I think franks version is different enough to avoid comparison. I like both.

Jay Payton gave a huge hug. Great moment
Incredibly powerful moment in NYC history
Liza Minnelli can sing anyone under the table. Live, with as backup dancers 5 cops a fireman and a public that goes wild
That is amazing, I think every players should wear NYPD/NYFD hats every 9/11.
MAGNIFICENT
New York, New York was written for Liza Minelli. What a perfect moment to hear her celebration of that incredible city, after such tragedy.
Liza is a fucking legend. Sure, she's nuts but whatever. Love it.
