How To WASTE A Great Character - Game of Thrones

  • There’s this scene in season 8 of Game of Thrones that I think perfectly captured what many fans were thinking about Tyrion Lannister for a long time “ I used to think you were the cleverest man alive.
Hey, I’m guilty of thinking something similar. Afterall, in seasons 1-4 in game of thrones, Tyrion did prove various times to be quite clever, and I think what made Tyrion so compelling to so many is that we got to watch Tyrion out smart, out-wit, and out manuever several real players in Kings Landing. But here’s the problem with that, eventually Tyrion loses this game of wits, and that’s fine at first, and all the way to the conclusion of season 4, narratively this is pretty good stuff.
Great characters are often defied and their strengths prove to not be enough, and that’s where they typically are provided with what is called in writing circles “the all is lost moment,” and in this moment, the best character arcs are evolved and they have an epiphany or have some sort of come to God moment where they rediscover their strengths, and in some cases it can better serve the story to have the character saved by a predictable, yet forgotten outside force - in Tyrion’s case he was saved by Jamie in season 4, either way the end result is the same in that they ultimately become vixctorious in whatever the given obstacle is. In season 4, the obstacle is merely surviving for Tyrion.
the lost meaning of Tyrion’s character truly begins. But lets back up, because I think the direction of this character may have been doomed long before we arrived in season 5. And obviously, we need to look at none other than Dan benioff & DB weiss. Because I think there are some moments very early on that mischaracterize Tyrion compared to the source material. And that’s where we are going to start this journey of a character Losing Meaning.

Shame what they did to Handless & Noseless, the Lannister boys, who were the best duo on the show arguably.

Actually I believe Brienne was harmed in that we don't see her softer side after season 3. She goes from lady knight to just knight. GRRM once described Brienne as 'Sansa with a Sword', she's innately romantic and her desires are to protect innocent people like Pod and Sansa not merely because she swore and oath (that is her stated motivation for Sansa, but even there she thinks about about Sansa's mental state, not just her physical well being), but because she cares about those she deems innocent, including an egg seller who nearly gets raped or a dwarf septon, etc. She also loves and misses her father, and feels that she's let him down by not being feminine enough or born a boy. This is also left out and would have put the whole Tormund-sexually-harassing-Brienne-for-comedy subplot in its place. If fans has seen this side of Brienne, I doubt they'd have shipped Tormund's stalking of her or found it humorous. It would have been viewed as just as disturbing as when men harassed Sansa.

The way she’s framed in the show is all that I’m suggesting. I’d say she’s the least broken character from the writing.

I get that he really liked her, but it was still definitively creeper territory. Brienne made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him. He even admits it to the Hound, but he still follows her around and harasses her. Tormund is an adult man who refuses to respect a woman's wishes to be left alone. His liking her isn't an excuse. @@jobobtargaryen1258

BS. Tormund knew Brienne wasn't interested in him, yet he followed her around, pestering her, for two years. That's harassment. @@jobobtargaryen1258

Of all the characters they did dirty they absolutely screwed Euron Greyjoy. He is one of the most evil, interesting characters. He was Maegor with magic. WTF D&D!?

I disagree with the point about the battle of the blackwater. Being basically the only competent person in the city arranging the defence, his tactics still count as saving their lives. In the same way that someone who administers CPR until the real doctors arrive still saved someone's life. If Stannis had entered the city before Tywins army arrived there would have been total slaughter. So even if the Lannisters would have won eventually, he definitely saved many many lives that day.
Comparing it to the Battle of Bastards also doesn't work in my opinion because it was a dumb foolhardy battle that Jon sought even though he was understrength. Tyrion in Kingslanding was simply holding down the fort so their positions are just very different. Holding on longer than others would have while under siege counts in a different way than it does attempting a foolhardy last ditch battle on a force twice your size.

Tyrion by himself almost lost the war for Danaerys. That wasn’t worse than her listening to his horrible plan vs literally everybody else in the room, and then using John Snow, who is a complete stranger at that time to confirm it for her

Tyrion Lannister. The most crippled, bastardised and broken thing in the whole show.

Best thing they could have done-
Tyrion charge shae and kill her as a murder saying “you never loved me, no one could ever love me!”
Then progress as normal until becoming Danny’s hand-
The people of wasps love her so help them, but call for fire and blood on the evil people of Westeros who do not know what live is.
He helps her to madness, and snaps when he sees what he wroughts- doesn’t resign because of outrage, but because he sees what he and she have become.
Knows he deserves death and tells John there’s no saving what he has twisted her into.

Brilliant! The show was good for one thing, it made me read the books. I agree with you about Tyrion arc. Tyrion, in Dance of The Dragons was a bad guy. The show ruined a lot of characters. Especially Jaime and Tyrion.

I gotta disagree with the Tysha reveal they teased this talk between Jaime and Tyrion atleast 4 times

    • @DCharles
      @DCharles  9 месяцев назад +3

So they do, but teasing isn’t development. Season 1 is the only time Tyrion shares the experience. And they really push this aside with the way they frame Shae and Tyrions relationship. It’s not an emphasis after the tent scene with Shae and Bronn. Whereas in the books, Tyrion thinks about this often enough that we feel it too during Jaime’s confession
