      @@MangoJellySolutions It does, CAD in general requires you to get some unintuitive concepts straight in your head. I blame this on the tendency to try to write reverse engineered applications with legacy in mind. by that I mean they do it so someone who is already trained in one CAD program has familiar concepts to rely on if they start using the new application. In my opinion however this is a bad idea. One promoted by Corporations that don't winch to have to pay for full 100% expensive training hen they hire new people that have experience, but on a different software. The ultimate I know it doesn't make sense but that the way it is done argument, lol.
      Prime example of that is everone's need to constantly explain the strange and unintuitive ways to link geometries from one sketch to another. in a ideal environment all you would have to do is ctrl-Click a master sketch and drag it into a body to use it as a direct linkable reference. Making a referenced copy. a plus would be to hide the sketch in the root folder (or fix the fact that the master sketch is on top in the layers hiding the local one underneath, duh). If legacy training was ignored, then new Cad software would be Much Much Much easier to learn.

    When using a link to another sketch as a master sketch (as a construction line source) it would be nice if all u had to do is ctrl-click the master sketch in the tree and drag it to the body you want to use it in (automatically hiding the master sketch). Simple and intuitive.

  • @justrosy5

    For the hinge shape binder, assuming dynamic referencing is not needed, then it's a lot faster and just as good to go into the inactive BottomBody, select the HingeSketch, then use Edit --> Duplicate selected object. It will automatically place a perfect copy of the completed sketch into the active LidBody, and it will be placed in the exact same position. No muss, no fuss.

    Thank you, very clear tutorial. Few comments : 1- it will be nice to know your version of freecad. 2- I think some of your work flow will create topological errors if you were to add features to your bottom body.

      Agree. Very good tutorial except the hinge creation on the Face instead of a solid reference (plane) should be avoided as this is likely to cause problem down the road. Ask me how I know, leaned the hard way! 😳

      @@ericbelanger6900 it is why I think is important to let know every time the problem of using faces with freecad.

      Thanks for the feedback. So everything I do at the present time is on 0.19. I don't use RealThunder as of yet as its still in dev though the topological issues have had outstanding progress to remove the issue. With the videos yes there is that problem if you go back and modify faces which is the reason why (which I should of explained) I left the hinges to last. It's a interesting dilemma that I have, I have tried before to be topological safe in my videos which result in comments saying that I should of done it the way that isn't topological safe. At some point these issues will be solved using universal CAD modelling and all will then be fine. Topological issues normally come from changes from the target design. Though I am not using a technical drawing I an working towards a set end result. It's really is a hard when doing these videos to cover without the videos being way too long and people losing interest. I have talked about topological issues in a video before which resulted in me removing the video because of hatred and negative comments towards freecad. You probably understanding my predicament.

      it would still be useful to make it clear. RUclips is full of FreeCAD videos that are no good to me because they are using different/old/mystery version of FreeCAD.
      Otherwise I am enjoying your channel - thank you! (even though I am only using Realthunder's Link branch - it may, in theory be "experimental/in development" but it works great, and I am not missing so called "master" branch at all...)

    What about the topological naming issue in FreeCAD? Wouldn’t the model fall apart if a change is made due to placing sketches on faces?
    Could be resolved by placing a sketch with the correct offset to the main plane?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 года назад

      Depends on if the faces change that much but yes that will help stop you hitting those issues. This has been asked a few times on the channel. With topological you have to think about the future of freeCAD, at the moment freeCAD has improved around this area especially with link stage 3. At some point this will all be resolved. The tutorials are from the concepts of traditional CAD practices for longevity. Offsetting sketches and attaching them loosely to your models does help but you end up slowing down the process. Being able to go back through and fix these issues as they occur or build large models in smaller sections then you end up managing any issue and also you get a deeper understanding of the dependencies.

    Hi, I am trying to move the lid hinge 10mm so it isn't sat on the bottom box hinge, I used the z plane and moved 10mm, clicked off the picture but the lid hinge didn't move, any idea? 38 mins in. I clicked on update & it moved the 10mm, all good 👍

    At 31:15 and 33:15 and 47:30, why add the extra step of defining an equality instead of just clicking the external geometry that you want to match and linking them that way? You mention specifically doing it this way but don't go much into the "why", especially for the first instance; I'm very curious as I *think* this has always worked okay for me.
