Hello Christopher and Eric, had not had time to see your last two videos, catching up this evening, it is exciting to inject changes in the garden, I love all your ideas and I am absolutely sure the end product will be absolutely divine like the rest of your landscape. With much heartache we removed a hydrangea hedge, it gave us so much opportunity for wonderful changes, the garden is always evolving, I am excited for what the future holds!🌞🍂🍁🍂🍁
What a way to start my day. I was yelling NO,NO,No at my iPad. I loved the hydrangeas. But I trust in your talent for design, your knowledge of plants and flowers. I found myself coming down from the ledge as you outlined the new design and discussed the endless possibilities for this new and I’m sure enchanting space in your garden. I agree with Christopher’s idea for the bench. My vote would be for a pond in the ground, something new and challenging for you to master. Also a weeping cypress by the pond may be pretty. What ever you gentlemen decide I will be watching and cheering you on. Good luck and happy planting my friends.
As a gardener, we learn pretty quickly nothing is set in stone. Change is always a good thing… now you given me the courage to rip out my old mophead hydrangea in the front bed that isn’t giving me joy.
GOOD on you guys! I NEVER have problem with removing perennials, shrubs or trees for then desiring a change either with a new improved variety or something different totally! I have friends that frown and think I must KEEP every single plant and just stick it somewhere else in my gardens, though if I'm no longer in love with the said plant, the compost or burn pile works great, LOL.
I experienced so many emotions watching this video! This is going to be amazing! Thank you for blessing the world with this video. Happy gardening, friends. 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Very nice! You guys (and Laura, on Garden Answer) have really inspired me to not be afraid to start digging things out, moving things around, and give myself “permission” to make bigger changes in my gardens! Looking forward to seeing your new undulating border take shape! 😊
Gentleman, I loved the banter and the exchange of ideas for the new space. Love the water feature and the bench. I am so excited to watch all the progress.
It was fun to hear you both brainstorming on your plans for this new bed, and I am looking forward to watching it come together over time. It's going to be gorgeous.
NOOOOOOOOO! Say it ain’t so!!!! It’s an End Of an Era!!! JUST KIDDING 😂 I trust both of you, you both have Exquisite Taste and an Eye for Breathtaking Garden Design! I literally have goosebumps and can’t wait to see the transformation. Farewell Hydrangeas and thank you very much for your service. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I LOVE this video on so many levels!! You both showed such courage in letting go of your beloved Limelight hedge for the sake of a new creative garden experience. And you showed such fortitude in digging up FIFTEEN mature shrubs. (Back breaking!) I love that you found new homes for them and for the removed sod. Thanks a million for sharing your design process for us in the moment. I was fascinated !It’s remarkable that you two are basically self-taught. You are so inspiring to me and to many more.❤
Talk about exciting! I think this is every gardener’s secret dream: a new opportunity opening up to allow for new ideas and new plants to transform the space. The excitement is palpable! I can’t wait to hear more about the development of this new garden. I think a low fountain across from the bench would be positively lovely in the new space. (Bench on the East side, fountain on the West, providing a nice view of the fountain from the terrace).
Such a treat to watch you two talk thru the process. Before and after pics can be inspirational, but I often want to understand how a garden got from point A to point B. Ty!
Looks great already - looking forward to watching the next steps. Thanks for the inspiration and positive vibes, you've given me the confidence I needed to transform my straight against the fence bed into something more interesting!
@20:40 - YES! Eric's pick near the walkway and Christopher's pick near the stone pathway. And YES!!!! my favorite evergreen a Thunderhead!!! near the stone pathway! They are so incredibly beautiful! I bought the Vanderwolf after seeing it in your garden. The needles are similar, different color, and so whimsical. My only other recommendation now is a Weeping Bruns Serbian Spruce. I got one of those and they all play so well together in my evergreen garden.
Omg 🤩 i can’t believe you removed all hydrangeas, but I know its lot of work for you guys. I can’t wait to see the big transformation, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing 👌😍
I have a lot of winding paths around our 1.3 acre property. One thing I have definitely found for myself is that the path structure is more important than the bed structure meaning that as a path comes to an end their needs to be something significant there to focus on. I also much prefer Ys to Ts. I love watching y'all work through things together and your energy. My mom is a better visualizer than I am and I love our "consultations".
The new design is fantastic and is more in line with the rest of your garden. The hedge was beautiful but this will be more interesting for sure. Great choice!
It’s going to look amazing guys! If you don’t love something in the garden, it has to go. I can’t wait to see the transformation of this beautiful new border in the coming months and years. 🎉
Wow!! Today's project was totally surprising! What a fun space to dream about all winter. It was fun to listen to you spitballing ideas for plants & features in your new space 😊
Soooo shocked you took out the hydrangeas (just cuz I know how much you loved them and worked so hard on them). BUT the new layout will be spectacular! Can't wait to see how things turn out!
Yes!!! I can so relate that the very thing that got us so inspired at the beginning is the very thing that needs to change and then it evolves again. Wonderful guys!
I agree with so many of the other people adding comments. I couldn’t believe that you were pulling out the hydrangea hedge. It was such a statement. But … I totally get removing the hedge if it was too high maintenance. I look forward to what you put in the new beds. My only comment is that I think the bench should face out into the backyard not looking at the fence. There is so much more to see in that direction.
Vanilla Strawberry panicle hydrangea is amazing. I have one and it’s stunning. I trim it back a third every spring. The branches are sturdy, and the flower heads are huge and really do turn vanilla, strawberry and a rose red on one flower. I keep mine about 5x5 . One would make such a beautiful statement in your garden.
OHHHH! That lovely hedge brought me to your channel. I created a hydrangea hedge coming down our driveway because yours looked so beautiful and I desperately wanted the look. It is still young so I don't yet see the beauty of yours. I had such anxiety when you mentioned removing the row months ago. I am glad you told us previously so I could prepare for today's video. 😥 I held my breath at the beginning with the title and again when the shovel went into the ground. But @8:00, I took a deep breath. I understand the maintenance issue with hydrangeas and am interested in the evergreen low maintenance and four season interest. BUT!!! @17:08 I was SO EXCITED!!! Just WOW! I can see the vision taking place! Then! After the compost went down, I am all in! I can't wait to see the transformation because your ideas SOUND AMAZING!!!
I am so happy to find your site. I also love Hygrangra and have many new varieties. My space is limited and I also dig many out and give them away. I love your gardens and all your new ideas. I will enjoy following your progress.
Can’t wait to follow you along on your next gardening journey. You guys have such an incredible eye for design that I feel like I’m enrolling in a garden design class for the next few months. Love the curved lines. As a new gardener 5 years ago, what I thought were “curved” paths 5 years ago now look straight to me 🙄.
I have a suggestion: think about putting in more matching arborvitae at the beginning of your bed. I would do 3 maybe 5 to make a privacy screen from the neighbors second story level of the house. Although there is not too many windows but it may help from feeling looked down at. Also 3 will fit nice and give a good continuity. If you plant too many permanent trees all different it may get a chaotic feel. Think about repeating some trees - either in groups or spaced near each other.
Consider putting in an underground reservoir with a fountain feature on it. Basalt rocks or faux basalt rocks or large urn would bring a low maintenance water feature to the area!
I am excited to see the space evolve! I originally voted to remove the hedge, as I was sure you would both enjoy creating a space “from scratch” with a wide variety of new plants. 🌱 Thanks for bringing me (and everyone) along on this garden adventure.
If you are doing a water feature, think about the wonderful sound it will make and if you will get the full enjoyment of it so far away from your house/deck etc. My favorite feature of mine is having my windows open in winter and hearing the water flow. Such a spectacular addition to my garden & I cannot remember when it wasn’t there.
Initially I was sad about the hydrangea hedge going, although you did mention it a few times, but WOW......the new space is going to be fabulous!!! I can hardly wait to see it develop!!!
l totally understand the removal of the hydrangeas. I had a line of red barbara karst bougainvillea against my fence and every year me and my husband would cut back the winter damage, and it was a 3 man job!, and when l lost my husband to cancer, it was to much for one to maintain, so l and my son removed it. I really miss the color, but the maintenance and all those thorns were to much. Thank you so much for taking us on this journey. Like you said, a garden is always evolving.❤❤❤😊😊😊
First time viewer here. Loved this video. Enjoyed seeing you work as a team to shift from old likes to new ones that support your future plans. Explaining your reasoning as you made your new bed edges was interesting. I am now a new subscriber and am looking forward to more videos from you. Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh, oh, oh! I can't wait to see it all come together! Thank you for sharing with us. Love watching your creative processing and thoughts. I worry about ground level standing water will attract unwanted wildlife.
Oh gosh, I too am like nooooo. Don’t pull out the limelight hedge!! I love you guy’s channel so much and trust that this is going to be even more amazing!! I got sooo excited when you drew it out with paint!!! I loved hearing you two bounce ideas off each other. At 24:15 I liked the curve it looked like you drew it in deeper than you had it. Looked like you had tried to get rid of the other line, but I felt like the one you drew first looked better. JMO. I agree with you though, the more you garden, the more you learn, the more you need to retool to make your garden the best it can be!! ❤️Deanna
That change was actually related to the pathway. In order to keep the path wide enough the edge ended up being too straight, that's why it was deepened
I was stunned when I opened this video and saw what you were doing! But now that I see the new garden bed, I’m excited to see what you both are doing. Good luck!
Let the fun begin! I’m so excited to follow the development of this space. While the hydrangeas were beautiful, I really love your mixed border beds. I think you should plant both of the evergreen trees you spoke of. They would add weight to that side of the house.
Oh my word! I can’t believe the hydrangeas are gone but I’m also so excited for the new garden! The lines are so cool and can’t wait for the new plants! When you guys go big you really go big!!!
I was one of the sceptics about removing the hydrangea hedge- but seeing the space and how good it looks now even before being planted up- I am super excited for you guys and to see the space evolving into something new and beautiful! 😊❤
Umbrella pine gets my vote. Perfect size for that space. So glad that hedge is out. What a chore but totally worth it! I am a conifer geek, so i love it!
Wow! It looks incredible! So exciting, I loved the limelight hedge but now you have so much opportunity to do so much more. Great decision, now you have a lot to dream about and plan for for the spring💚
So excite for you guys! Can’t wait to see how you design the space once the plants go in 😊 something to look forward to in Spring oh and my vote would be the thunderhead 🤷♀️
I love the moffat blue there 20:13, put firefly in the middle of fence and then the pine near the blue moffat for the colors of red, blue, yellow and green. Iseli has so many fun evergreens that I’ve been on an evergreen kick and want them all
Hello Christopher and Eric, had not had time to see your last two videos, catching up this evening, it is exciting to inject changes in the garden, I love all your ideas and I am absolutely sure the end product will be absolutely divine like the rest of your landscape. With much heartache we removed a hydrangea hedge, it gave us so much opportunity for wonderful changes, the garden is always evolving, I am excited for what the future holds!🌞🍂🍁🍂🍁
It’s going to be an exciting planting season
What a way to start my day. I was yelling NO,NO,No at my iPad. I loved the hydrangeas. But I trust in your talent for design, your knowledge of plants and flowers. What ever you gentlemen decide I will be watching and cheering you on. Good luck and happy planting my friends.
We actually had written down a weeping cypress as an option! Great minds!
My gosh, I’d die for those beautiful dried stems! Amazing!❤
so many!
As a gardener, we learn pretty quickly nothing is set in stone. Change is always a good thing… now you given me the courage to rip out my old mophead hydrangea in the front bed that isn’t giving me joy.
That’s great to hear! You’ll be so happy with the change.
Yay, I was on team 'rip it out'. Looks great so far. So ecxiting!!
We're so glad you're excited to see what's next!
It's always a tough decision, but we're ready for something new!
I experienced so many emotions watching this video! This is going to be amazing! Thank you for blessing the world with this video. Happy gardening, friends. 🌱🌱🌱🌱
It was a big decision but we're so excited about the future of the space!
Omg!!!! Love it!!! The new curves are stunning! Crazy how this small adjustment makes such a huge impact even before it is planted!!!! So inspiring!!!
We're loving the curves too!
Sorry Eric, I totally agree with Christopher's first thoughts for the shape of the new flower bed!
I think the end result is pretty close to my idea
I feel so sad to see the hydrangeas go but super excited to see what new, organic look the garden will have.
It’s going to be so much fun
Very nice! You guys (and Laura, on Garden Answer) have really inspired me to not be afraid to start digging things out, moving things around, and give myself “permission” to make bigger changes in my gardens! Looking forward to seeing your new undulating border take shape! 😊
You can do it!
Gentleman, I loved the banter and the exchange of ideas for the new space. Love the water feature and the bench. I am so excited to watch all the progress.
Thanks so much!
It was fun to hear you both brainstorming on your plans for this new bed, and I am looking forward to watching it come together over time. It's going to be gorgeous.
We had a good time with this
I 'm excited for your new design next year!
We are too!
I’m so happy you decided to remove the limelight hedge. Although stunning…oh the possibilities. And we get to watch the transformation!!!
We’re excited to see what we can create!
NOOOOOOOOO!
Say it ain’t so!!!!
It’s an End Of an Era!!!
JUST KIDDING 😂
I trust both of you, you both have Exquisite Taste and an Eye for Breathtaking Garden Design! I literally have goosebumps and can’t wait to see the transformation. Farewell Hydrangeas and thank you very much for your service. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
It’s definitely a bittersweet moment, but we’re looking forward to what’s next for this space!!!! Thank you for watching
so excited to see how this new space develops! kudos for embracing change even if it meant changing something that was already beautiful 🎉
Yes! Thank you!
I LOVE this video on so many levels!! You both showed such courage in letting go of your beloved Limelight hedge for the sake of a new creative garden experience. Thank you so much!
I highly recommend a small pond. They are fun and so beneficial to wildlife. I can't wait to see it all come together.
I think a pond could be very fun to add!
Can't wait to watch it transform in the spring. ❤️
Thanks!
We love the idea of a fountain!
Such a treat to watch you two talk thru the process. Before and after pics can be inspirational, but I often want to understand how a garden got from point A to point B. Ty!
We are always happy to share our thought process!
Looks great already - looking forward to watching the next steps. Thanks for the inspiration and positive vibes, you've given me the confidence I needed to transform my straight against the fence bed into something more interesting!
It's so exciting to get started on a new project!
@20:40 - YES! Eric's pick near the walkway and Christopher's pick near the stone pathway. And YES!!!! my favorite evergreen a Thunderhead!!! near the stone pathway! They are so incredibly beautiful! Sooo much to come
O my goodness No ,No I'm yelling at you guys I love this hedge ❣️ but then again I can't wait to see what's next.
haha we knew this would be a little controversial
I have a lot of winding paths around our 1.3 acre property. You’re right, we want to make sure the focal points are great!
I just finished the video and I had to come back and say that I'm just so excited for y'all and can't wait to see everything.
@@heathersgardenpeace Thanks! It's going to be awesome
The new design is fantastic and is more in line with the rest of your garden. The hedge was beautiful but this will be more interesting for sure. Great choice!
We agree...we are so excited about the new plan!
Love changes in the garden, however I did love that hedge!
We know it’s sad to see it go, but the new space will be amazing!
Was feeling bad about the hedge but after first listening then seeing the mulch and grass replacement, of my goodness I love it!👏🏼❤️
We are so excited about the possibilities.
So much fun! I love the way you two negotiate. What a great skill! Oh wow so pretty!
We're so excited!
It’s going to look amazing guys! If you don’t love something in the garden, it has to go. I can’t wait to see the transformation of this beautiful new border in the coming months and years. 🎉
That's the plan!
Wow!! Today's project was totally surprising! What a fun space to dream about all winter. It was fun to listen to you spitballing ideas for plants & features in your new space 😊

You are right, we definitely considered that!
How exciting! Love it already but look forward to all the new planting. You both look so excited it is fun to see!
Thanks so much!
This project is amazing! I can’t wait to see how you build it out. Yes to a Thunderhead pine.
The pine would be a showstopper!

This was definitely a journey of a video. I'm SO happy that the final touch of sod removal could be included.
Wow that is going to look so good next year
Yes!!
I am so happy to find your site. I also love Hygrangra and have many new varieties. My space is limited and I also dig many out and give them away. I love your gardens and all your new ideas. I will enjoy following your progress.
Thank you for following! Next year is going to be a lot of fun
I really like the firefly. I’m making plans to put one in my yard. ❤
Its gorgeous
that drone shot from above while hedgetrimming was a great angle to get
Last year I did a very dramatic portion of a video with Eric trimming the hedge...I thought it was nice to do a little nod to it
Can’t wait to follow you along on your next gardening journey. You guys have such an incredible eye for design that I feel like I’m enrolling in a garden design class for the next few months. Love the curved lines. As a new gardener 5 years ago, what I thought were “curved” paths 5 years ago now look straight to me 🙄.
They just keep getting deeper!
So exciting! Love the drone footage while you drew the new outline.
That was Eric's first time holding the controller
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the new bed curves! Great job! So exciting. I can almost feel your enthusiasm through my IPad!
We really love it!
That’s a good thought
Consider putting in an underground reservoir with a fountain feature on it. Basalt rocks or faux basalt rocks or large urn would bring a low maintenance water feature to the area!
Interesting, something we will look in to
I am excited to see the space evolve! I originally voted to remove the hedge, as I was sure you would both enjoy creating a space “from scratch” with a wide variety of new plants. 🌱 Thanks for bringing me (and everyone) along on this garden adventure.
We are really happy with the progress so far
Wow, loving it already!!!
It's so exciting to finally be starting this project!
Can’t wait now to see how you transform this space. The hydrangeas were stunning, but I do like the new space.
Thanks! We are excited
AH, the visions! The possibilities are endless! So excited to see it come together!
Sometimes there are TOO many options!
We have been thinking about it!
Love to watch the process unfold!
Me too!
Initially I was sad about the hydrangea hedge going, although you did mention it a few times, but WOW......the new space is going to be fabulous!!! I can hardly wait to see it develop!!!
Thanks!
l totally understand the removal of the hydrangeas.
The garden changes with the gardener.... I'm sorry for your loss
I love your new flower bed!
We’re excited to see how it develops!
Can’t wait to see your whole design process. It’s so helpful for you to talk out your ideas. Learn so much from you guys.
It's all about thinking out loud!
Oh my!! I’m just as excited as y’all are!! Cannot wait to see it all come together! Well done guys, well done!!! ❤
Thanks so much

Welcome to the channel! We’re always happy to share our garden adventures.
How exciting! It’s always such fun to update a garden space. Can’t wait to see the end results!
It really is!
Me too!!
When you put the chalk mark down, my heart started to pitter patter !!!!! 🌿
haha me too
Oh, oh, oh! I can't wait to see it all come together! Thank you for sharing with us. Love watching your creative processing and thoughts. I worry about ground level standing water will attract unwanted wildlife.
That's why we have the dry creek...it moves the water along
Oh gosh, I too am like nooooo. Don’t pull out the limelight hedge!! I love you guy’s channel so much and trust that this is going to be even more amazing!! I got sooo excited when you drew it out with paint!!! I loved hearing you two bounce ideas off each other. At 24:15 I liked the curve it looked like you drew it in deeper than you had it.
Good luck!
Yay! Thank you!
I can't wait to follow along as the new space is developed! I must admit, I am jealous of your new blank canvas!
It's so exciting to start fresh!
I'm glad the hydrangeas all found new homes!
I'm super excited to see your vision come to life for the new garden bed.
Love from Canada ❤
We're excited to bring you along for the journey!
Let the fun begin! I’m so excited to follow the development of this space. While the hydrangeas were beautiful, I really love your mixed border beds. I think you should plant both of the evergreen trees you spoke of. They would add weight to that side of the house.
Me too!!
Love it ,your so brave, couldn’t give my plants away though 🤣🍀🍀looking forward to learning more from you boys xx
Thanks!
Definitely like the larger lawn circle at the edge of the walkway! The his is going to be fabulous!
Thanks!
Love the garden bed lines! Your creativity and knowledge will for sure enable the transformation to be epic! It will be a fun journey!🌲🌸🌹🌿🌼🌳
Thanks for watching, we can't wait to see how it all comes together!
I can’t wait to follow every step of the way I love you guys ❤
Thanks!
Can't wait to see how fabulous your garden will become, so far it's impressive.
Me too!
A bright spot today - what a fabulous project!!!
Definitely looking to the beauty of the garden today
Oh my word! I can’t believe the hydrangeas are gone but I’m also so excited for the new garden! The lines are so cool and can’t wait for the new plants! When you guys go big you really go big!!!
It’s exciting to make a big change!
That's some exciting stuff! Great video, as usual!
Seeing the whole space cleared out and the edge defined changed everything. We can see all the plants working together
I have a burkes red …it’s still small
But it is stunning when it gets its fresh color in late spring
It's a really cool tree
Wow, it will be another amazing garden space.
We're really excited about it.
I was one of the sceptics about removing the hydrangea hedge- but seeing the space and how good it looks now even before being planted up- I am super excited for you guys and to see the space evolving into something new and beautiful! 😊❤
We knew this would be a bit controversial, but after seeing the bed take shape I really think the evolution will put everyone at ease!
@ Yes, I agree!
Umbrella pine gets my vote. Perfect size for that space. So glad that hedge is out. What a chore but totally worth it! I am a conifer geek, so i love it!
oh I love those!
So awesome. Great ideas. Looking forward to Spring.💚💚💚
Thanks, we’re really excited about it too!
I am so excited for all of the possibilities and cannot wait to see what you decide.
Me too!
WOW!
I’m definitely going to miss this incredible hedge, but definitely excited for the future. Keep inspiring. I need to get to it.
Thanks!
I would love a Japaense Garden in that space.
We are considering at least one Japanese maple!
Wow! It looks incredible! So exciting, I loved the limelight hedge but now you have so much opportunity to do so much more. Great decision, now you have a lot to dream about and plan for for the spring💚
Its so much fun

I love the moffat blue there 20:13, put firefly in the middle of fence and then the pine near the blue moffat for the colors of red, blue, yellow and green. Iseli has so many fun evergreens that I’ve been on an evergreen kick and want them all
They have the BEST stuff
