Marty if you have time after having a life, family, working and you tubing... a fun project would be to paint a world map using art products made In the countries they are produced in.
Another fantastic in depth review Marty mate, you know I used to shy away from watercolours, but the more I watched your reviews, the more and more I wanted to give them ago.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews Give em a go Harry, I think you'll like them, especially if you just don't pressure yourself too much. Just let them happen. Too many people try to control them. Just start small and explore I'd say. Good to hear from you my friend. - Marty
Thanks SO much for this review. I was one of the many viewers who had requested it, and it was great getting your take on them. They look great. I'm thinking of getting a set for my sisters' kids - I like them to have decent quality art materials - even if they're not quite old enough yet to appreciate the difference. This is a good option that won't break the bank, I reckon.
Yes!! I literally just got these in the mail yesterday so I'm happy to see this here today. After researching online and playing with them the last 24 hours, a couple thoughts: being semi moist, it's really easy to pick up a lot of pigment goo but they thin out well so most of my 36 pans are actually pretty transparent; a post by an art distributor on LinkedIn explained that these are exactly the same as Yarka St. Petersburg, just packaged differently by different distributor; and one of the things that makes them artist grade is real pigments instead of hues so the couple commenters who mentioned buying for kids should consider that these have cadmium, etc, instead of the hues you'd find in a student line.
+confidential Hi Confidential - Great tips here and thanks for pointing out that these are the same as the Yarka's. Yes, I forgot to mention anything in the video about whether these are non-toxic or not. There isn't a ton of info on the website about them. - Marty
My art teacher recommended these paints as they are really price worthy. And I really liked to work with them. But not all sure if I should go for the 12 or 24 set as I'm a newbie on a budget.
+Sarah Larsson (Rockcat) Hi Sarah - Start with the 12. They are affordable and you can mix other needed colors from these. That'll help with the budget and since they're full pans they'll last a good long time. - Marty
+Sarah Larsson (Rockcat) i bought the 24 set and it has been really groovie so far. I like it 'cause i can put other things inside the box for when i go plain aire. Its also relatively small ( slightly bigger than a cribbage board. (or a box of pastels)) and fits well in a back pack well but definitely not a pocket. Well i use anoraks so it does fit in mine, but normal people pockets... probably not haha. Personally, im happy that i got the 24 au lieu of the 12. the extra 12 colours you get are DOPE. Marty has a good point that you can mix most other colours from the 12 though.
thank you for this review! it was really helpfull. I recently got myself a 36 colour set because I found it for 45$ on sale. which was an awesome deal. I love these paints a lot.
Hi I know that I am late to comment on this but I was so surprised to see how widely available these now are. I'm a painter living and working in Brooklyn, but have family from Bulgaria. I traveled there in the early 90's and purchased a set with the help of a dear friend as art supplies were still somewhat controlled. These are wonderful paints! I'm so happy to be able to get them so easily. They are not a lower quality product. They may simply be a different standard, but it is an an extremely high one. I like that your reviews are balanced and that you actually give pricing information. Thanks
Thanks for the note. I paid a visit to the east before the wall came down, unfortunately I found no art supplies when I visited. :-) Thanks for finding my channel. ~Marty
Owings Art Wow I wasn't expecting a reply 😀. I'm not surprised that you didn't find any supplies when you were there. The only reason why I was able to purchase anything was because I went with a government sanctioned artist. Art supplies could still only be purchased by someone who carried the appropriate documents in a government run store. It was a very strange and eye opening experience for me when I went. By the way I had a very good laugh at your video on the Stonehenge Aqua paper. I will have to give it a try.
I've never heard of these. That was quite a blend with the red/blue!!!! Thanks for a great review. Lauri... BTW, I've never done any sketching... So I look forward to your future video on that!!
+Windkisssed Hi Windkissed - :-) I was just tossing some paint around there, but it was fun. I'd love to do more sketching videos. I just watched Steve's from Mindofwatercolor and it was awesome. Here's a link to his video: ruclips.net/video/CdQKmydt784/видео.html
Hi Marty!! Thanks for this review! I recently got the Yarka St Petersberg set and, as someone else mentioned, these look very much alike. I just started my first painting using the Yarkas (One from your friend TheFrugalCrafter's live sessions :) and the colors are awesome!!! I'm a recent subscriber and so glad I saw you on one of Lindsay's videos! I've been going thru all your demos! You are really helping me in evaluating the products I currently have and those I'd consider for the future.
+JeanneGS1 Hi Jeanne - So glad to hear from you and happy the videos are helping. That's why I do them and it's really awesome to hear form people like you who get some mileage from them. Thank you! - Marty
+Shannon Sand Hi Shannon - Great to hear from you! I need to try those. Hey how's the spring in your part of the midwest? Thinking of heading your way later in the spring again. Love the Black Hills. - Marty
Hi Marty actually moved this last month that's why I haven't been as active. 😊 I'm actually in North east SD now. Sad to have moved but really enjoying this part of the state as well. 😊
Shannon Sand Was it a good move? I mean for work or something? One question, are the Badlands in Southwest ND more green then the SD Badlands? Just wondering if you knew.
+Owings Art It was a good move. Still working on getting unpacked but a good move over all, yeah for work. On the plus side I am only about 5 hours from the twin cities, there seems to be lots of great activities over that way. There are badlands in ND, I have a photographer friend who loves to take day trips out to devil's tower (I think that's what it's called) and I believe the badlands are a bit greener their right now. I know they have some beautiful land over that way and it's just gorgeous if you get the chance to go through it, you should definitely check it out. :)
Shannon Sand Thanks for the info Shannon. Let me know if you get up here, I can give you some good tips on places to go and things to see. No trip here is complete without visiting Wet Paint (the best little Art Store in the known Universe). :-)
Oh, I love these! Or rather, I have the Yarka St. Petersburg Artist water colors! From what I've seen on the internet, the White Nights and the Yarka are pretty much the same thing. Just Yarka is just the White Nights re-branded for America I think? I just love the granulation on them! They are SOOOO nice to use and affordable! Thanks for making a review on these Marty!
+Owings Art I would say that they are identical! My Yarka's behaved just like the White Nights(easy to wet and a thick application that you need to thin down a little). So I don't think you need to try them. Unless you want to of course!
First,I'd like to say a big thank you for all those wonderful reviews that you're posting.I've been watching them for quite some time and I have to say that they are very educational and fun to watch. And they help a lot in picking art supplies! White Nights are the watercolors I mainly use and I love them. They offer such decent quality for a reasonable price. Personally,I also enjoy the ShinHan Premium Watercolors. The pigments of those colors are very rich and vibrant.Might be worth checking them out too.:)
i have been waiting for my White Nights for a long time. i ordered them nearly a month ago and wont get them until April 20th! In the mean time I am enjoying videos, like yours, that are rating the paints. Thank you for reviewing these.
+K. Kay Byrnes Hi K. - They are on back order from the factory in St.Petersburg, I think many have been waiting as well. Thank you for the kind comments. - Marty
White Nights were the first set of watercolors, other than the cheap cakes, I purchased. Considering the quality and price point one can't go wrong, in my not by no means an artist opinion. Although I've since purchased more expensive professional tube colors, required for class, I continue to enjoy using my set of White Nights. You're correct some colors seem to be a little grainy, but the graininess doesn't interfere with the color. Thank you for your honest review, confirming my feeling it was money well spent! I see Sathish Kumar has asked if you would review Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors. They are wonderful colors, in my humble opinion, and I enjoy adding them to artwork on handmade cards. I would be interested in hearing your opinion. They seem to be more opaque than my professional set, but the colors are beautiful.
+Linda Anne Calderone Thank you Linda. I appreciate the comments and hearing about your experiences with these. I don't mind the graininess either really. I have the Gansai Tambi on my list and can't wait to review them one of these days soon. I also have the Holbein's on my list as well. Happy Tuesday! - Marty
Thanks for your review :) I have the 24 color box set and encountered one problem. The paints get tacky and the other day I tried to slide off the cardboard enclosure and it wouldn't budge as the paints had stuck to the inside. I had to rip the cardboard from the side and prize them off individually. I've since moved each full pan to little plastic tubs (which you can buy from soap supplies shops) Other than that the paints are really great. Lots of browns though. ^^;;
Hi there 👋 Marty! I'm revisiting my WN watercolors 🥰 and I still love many of them. They make my favorite Teal, their Turquoise. I also love Russian Green 😍 and chrome green oxide is one of my permanents also. So affordable from Jackson's! I'm backing up my chrome oxide green next order. Just can't go wrong with some of the colors. A beautiful orange also, can't remember the name I enjoy the weight of them. High pigment loads also. Glad to have bought the 36. I have more than 5 that are real keepers!
I just got my 36 set and love them! Found out Blick is really charging for replacement pans and a few other colors. I will be looking around and likely order replacements from overseas or refill with M Graham or D.S. Will see when the time comes. I notice that some pans are fuller than others, and suspect that it is the more expensive pigments. Could just be normal part of their manufacturing process though,. I have heard that they are poured, not baked and cut into chunks, I guess. Nice review, Marty! I would never glaze over with that much water, haha, of course they gonna reactivate! Silly! Haha!
Funnily enough, I was going to ask if you planned on reviewing this set. I got 4 of these to finish up a restricted complimentary palette of 6 colours last year and I just love everything about them. I'm trying hard to resist getting a large set of them as I have at least 3 other sets of watercolours, but I definitely plan on getting more of the loose pans. As I'm rubbish at resisting temptation, I did get a set of Sonnet which are the high student grade by the same company. They also do Ladoga which seem to be the beginner/student grade as there's no pigment info. The Sonnet were only £12 including postage, so I thought I'd give them a try as I'm colour greedy. Out of the set of 24, 19 of them are single pigment. About 6 of them are only 1 lightfast rating, but over half are 3. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but they are incredibly vibrant and release a lot of pigment with no effort at all. I use them for practising colour theory.
+Senghe Hi Senghe - Thanks for the tips on the other wc's, I haven't even heard of those. I'll have to check them out. They seem reasonable, at least in the EU.
I'm ordering my set of 36 white knights and part of the draw was the blues. Obviously the other colors too or I wouldn't be forking out that money for the 36. But blue is very important to me xD it looks lovely!
12/2017 It seems to me that they have worked on the quality of these paints. I ordered mine years ago, so I recently ordered all the transparent colors from the line (including the 8 new colors for 2017).
... these paints are so sympathetic to me :-). Probably because i love Russia; St. Petersburg is a city i would really like to visit. Anyway, I want to buy a set with whole pans and i'm still still undecided if i should get these or the Kuretake Gansai. The White Nights paints seem to be pretty popular here in Germany... PS: Great idea to add a q + a to your videos!
+Anja Meurer Hi Anja - I should be reviewing the Gansai very soon. Then I could do a comparison on them and you can see what you think about each. Have a great week Anja. - Marty
+Owings Art that's exactly what i will do :-). Thank you, Marty I'm curious what you will think about the Gansai. I like that they offer silver and gold but it seems that they are pretty opaque...
Not bad eh? These were my "had to purchase myself a set when ordering my nephew the paints too because the price was too hard to turn down". I did get a few months ago a cool palette with some pretty neat watercolor paints is the mission mijello. 36 colors in 7ml tubes, one of which is a white titanium that says in the description that turns the paints into gouche. Obviously white watercolor paint isn't for everyone but I don't mind it if it's opaque and I think you don't mind it either. Anyways the palette was really the deciding factor when buying the set minus the fact that it's only $67.70 PRIME ON AMAZON. I have been pretty much a Daniel smith junkie and only try different brands for a specific color or reason; I really have enjoyed these paints and the surprising part is when after painting one day my husband and I were scorpion hunting with our pest control guy and the bright rose glows under the black light! Maybe that's why it's listed as fugitive. The color is awesome!
+Erin S. I had no idea about the glow, that's either cool or weird depending on perspective :-). I've been hunting down the Mission's and I'm going to pick up a set soon and review them. I'm looking for a pocket box size. Like you, I enjoy having the white, mostly for flesh tones and knocking down high key colors. Have a great day Erin and thanks for the note. - Marty
Update, i watched it again after using it for a year now. I never go from my paint right on to my paper, never ever, not even with my schmincke... I always dilute in the lid first, wich is probably why you think they are opaque, but i call them my inktense in a full pan of paint.. only a small bit with water mixed in the lid will go a long way with these, but you know me by now,I am a walking talking volunteer sponsor add for these, specially for beginners i think they are of great value.
Hi Gwenneth - Yes, less than 5. I tend to rank them in their category, so if they're student grade, I rank them in that category. If they are Artist grade I rank them as such. :-) I haven't tried the Sonnet's, but it sounds like you like them very much. ~Marty
Hello, Please can you tell me the name and size of the mop brush you are using in this video. Im looking for a brush that holds lots of water, yours looks great. Thanks.
+safi456 Ahhhh, you spotted the Legendary Isabey #6 mop brush I was using. It is hand made by French craftspersons and is NOT cheap. Here is a link where you can invest in one yourself:www.savoirfaire.com/brushes/isabey/watercolor-mix-media-short-handle/natural-hair/quill-mop.html
That thick consistency could definitely be nice for some drybrush effect when doing foliage. Quite interesting as a whole, they seem a little like something between gouache and watercolor at least from what I'm seeing. It's very cool knowing that manufacterers can be using the same pigments in their colors, but the way they handle it with the binder or a wetting agent, the specific "Formula" will really change appearance a nd handling. Making it a worthwhile venture to give lots of brands a try.I think when I've saved up abit more, I'm going to try out some winsor and newton, Daniel smith, and perhaps M.Graham! I wonder though, are there any Japanese watercolors besides Sakura Koi? I recently also saw the Mijello Mission gold set on The mind of watercolor, and he mentioned they were from South Korea. I'm increasingly becoming interested in Asian oriented watercolors. After all, ink and watercolor paintings are quite prominent in a lot of Asian cultures.
elsa Grace They're different that's for sure, but I don't know if they're lightfast or not yet, because my tests aren't complete. That said, I thought they were above average in several categories.
I'm looking to upgrade from my Sakura koi watercolors. Between the winsor and newton sketch box and this white nights watercolors, which one would you recommend over the other as far as quality, and amount of paint? Great review as always, Marty, of course :)
Hi Natalie - Both are quite good but I have to give the edge to W&N Artists watercolors. The White Nights may not be as transparent as you'd like a watercolor to be. They can be a little chalky when applied heavy. You just have to water them down a bit. Good luck and thanks for the question! ~Marty
My friend bought a set a while ago, appearing these paints are not lightfast at all. I know you do your own light fastness testing. Have you done one for white night?
+Lee Jennings Hi Lee - I do and I get a very tiny amount if people buy from Amazon. However, the products don't sponsor me and I don't get any kick-backs from them, unless I state so otherwise in my videos. It's pretty rare that I get any sponsorships, but I'd like to do more of that. Thanks Lee. - Marty
Hi, thank you for your review. Could you give me a suggestion about which water colour is the most suitable for student? Do you know some low cost products from Aisa countries which are good enough for artist? Thank you!
+Luu Ha Hi Luu - You could try Mijello Mission Gold WC's made in Korea or you could also try Kuretake Gansai watercolors. Also there are many student grade watercolors from China. - Marty
that was really nice marty.. thank you :) are you planning on doing one on winsor and newton cotman? i checked your videos and i've inly seen the professional ones. -sana'a
+BIOnerd93 You know, I think you're right. I don't think I've done a Cotman review. Darn, I missed them and will need to add them to the list. Good catch. - Thank you! - Marty
you are welcome Marty :) can you please mention in the video if you prefer the tubes or pans ? i remember that i read somewhere that the W&N pans have more filler than tubes unlike shcmincke . - Sana'a
+BIOnerd93 I have used Cotman paints for years, and I would not recommend them. I finally switched to White Nights, and plan to eventually add Daniel Smith and Schmincke to my collection as and when I need to. The reason for abandoning Cotman is that, firstly, they dont stay moist in the palette, so you're always having to fight them to get them to reactivate. Secondly, they dry up fairly quickly in the tube - Ive had to throw quite a few nearly full tubes away. This didnt used to be the case before, I had them for years and they were fine. But recently this started happening, so Im not sure if maybe they changed their formulation or what. Having said that, their pans are better than their tubes, and do last for ages. So the pans are a good, economical choice if you cant afford artist quality. But then, White Nights is artist quality, and I believe are in the same price range as Cotman's (if not cheaper!) so you might want to try those.
+Owings Art I saw them on amazon www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01G9YV7NY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467420434&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=sonnet+watercolor&dpPl=1&dpID=512LXYMs7vL&ref=plSrch
Have you tried Yarka watercolors? I think they are made in the same factory as the White knights. I ordered some. Hoping they are as good quality as the reviews I have read.
Hey Marty. Great demo! I don't know if these are considered "artist grade" or not but I think a lot of the "student grade" paints have really stepped it up and blurred that line for a lot of people. Many of them use cheaper pigments but the vibrancy and lightfast rating is still pretty spectacular. Do you find now that you have been doing this for a while that your creative habits have changed? I remember you saying in past videos that you were primarily an oil painter. Is that still true or do you find reviewing all these products that you've found any new interests and maybe lean towards something else like watercolor, pen and wash, etc? Also, If you don't mind adding to your list, I would like to see you review Mission Gold Watercolors? Their website is giving away free samples (a cerulean blue which is a light phthalo blue, and a permenent red which is a napthol red). They are newer but there is a lot of controversy on their quality. I've done some research and found that if you look at their single pigments then they seem pretty much on par with other companies, they just tend to use multiple pigments for their earth colors and someone said they use a lot of Benzimidazolone pigments which they claim are more like staining dyes that are mixed in to make them seem brighter. I don't know that much about pigments yet so I can't tell if they are being over critical or not. Either way, some people don't like them, but I guess that's true of everything. Thanks Marty. -Pete
+IllustrationsByPete Hi Pete - Thanks for the great questions and for sharing this info on Missions. I'm planning to order them soon and they are on my list for sure. To your question about changing interests. Here is my process, which allows me to use lots of media - I draw and work thumbnails with graphite, washes, inks. Then I'll do a watercolor painting study, maybe several times over and over. I'll also do lot's of subject sketches. Once I'm satisfied with the general composition and colors, I'll start the underpainting and drawing process for an oil painting. Then I'll do the oil painting. So I end up using a variety of paints, pencils, charcoals, oils, oil mediums like linseed or walnut oil and lots of other materials. That said, I don't know about you, but I just like trying new things and keeping an open mind about the old ones. That's basically it. :-) - Marty
+Owings Art Thanks for sharing your process. That sounds like a great way to keep it interesting. If there was anyway to get that process or at least clips of that process into a video or series of videos showing the beginning sketches to end oil painting, it would be great. I always enjoy watching people do what they do, it gives me a glimpse into what makes them tick. Thanks again. -Pete
when i use them i have to be careful to not pick up too much paint, even when the pans are dry! super awesome paint. If you are careful you can get a nice transparency. i was painting a naked lady, then decided to give her a see though blouse; it worked like a dream. These paints are VERY vibrant. If you paint a "realistic style" it might be a good idea to "muddy" the colours on the pallet a touch They are worth it for sure! Perfect for broke students comme moi that are looking for artist grade paints :)
Thanks Marty!! I have been hearing about these lately. I recently bought the Sennelier 12+6 set and having swatched those, I am really happy with them. I also bought the Daniel Smith 6 set and the Primatek set...love the Primatek! Do you see a reason to purchase these too? Can you get these as singles as well? I do like the pan holder in the case, it seems to work a bit better then the metal ones. Anyway, thanks again for another great video. Cheers! ~Valarie 😆
+Valarie Connell Hi Valarie - If you have the Senn's and the DS, you don't really need these, unless you want an inexpensive pocket box for field sketching things like thumbnails. The pan holders are nice if they stay put, but not quite as good as the tin cases, but I suppose I'm just used to those. Have an AWESOME day! - Marty
+Owings Art Thanks Marty!! I don't forsee needing a pocket field set, so I am just going to stick with what I have...lol! Still learning to use the ones I have...😉
+Owings Art Hey Marty, shoot me an email before going into your Gansai paints review. There's some info I can give you to include with information that is not readily out there and due to this, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding the product. As you know, I'm like you where we are interested in the history and interesting tidbits. One such info bit is that Kuratake is the brand, the type of paint is called Gansai, Kuratake Gansai Tambi is what the company decided to call it. Cheers! I've missed your videos (I've been a bit distracted with my art) and I'm glad that when I want, I can go to RUclips and watch new videos on your page. :-P
My Panda Paints Okay, will do. Can you shoot me an email again with your email? lol, I recently had to clear out my old email and so I've lost some contacts. - Marty
So base on the points you give, vangogh is better than this? I'm kinda deciding between vangogh and whitenight. I read that this one is actually artist quality and vangogh is student grade. Vangogh is still better though?
I'm ordering mine at the beginning of July (getting the 36 set for a wider range of colors) and will hopefully have them by August or the latest, September. My mom doesn't like the sticker price for the 36 set but I firmly believe it will be worth the investment. Thanks for the review :)
+Owings Art same here. They seem like they're going to be the perfect companion set to my MGraham palette. I won't need paint for a good long while with these two brands.
+Owings Art I certainly have it on my wishlist. I just don't have lots of breathing space in my pocketbook right now so I have to be really selective. I really want to try them down the line when my tube paints start getting low though :)
As some people have mentioned, I'd never heard of this brand either. They almost seem more like a gouache type paint. Thanks for posting a great review!
+Walcott Fine Art Yes, they look a little like Gouache until you thin them with water. After that they work very good and are really transparent. :-) - Marty
i understand that this set is the exception with it's full pans, but the fact that they could sell a 12 set with full pans, with good paint, and still make a profit (they wouldn't price it this low if they weren't making money from it), it sort of makes every other pocket set feel like a scam with their measly half pans, despite costing about the same as this set. it comes across like every other company are grossly overcharging for their pocket paint sets just because they can, while st petersburg are the only ones who price their paint fairly. either that is true, or the 12 set is a loss leader for st. petersburg, which i find unlikely.
That may only be half the story. These paints may not contain high grade pigments and I think it's a little sketchy that they don't publish the types of pigments they use.
I like White Nights but watch out for some of the browns. If left for a long time they set like concrete and become useless. Also I'd be wary about the lightfast ratings. I use them for doodling and for short term stuff like hand painted cards.
+Terence Molloy Hi Terrence - Great tips and thanks for the heads up on the lightfastness. I'm still testing them long term and so far they seem to be holding up okay, but it's still early. Have a GREAT day! - Marty
Not sure why I am not able to comment on my own comment however here is the link to the set of 36 Mission Mijello tubes and palette to see. I really like the palette and I bought a second one because I needed another one and was low on about half the colors because I've been using it daily. amzn.com/B00BFCGF2O
+Erin S. That's a nice set, but I'm looking for a smaller pocket box. Sort of collecting the pocket boxes for a future review. - Marty :-) PS - Let me know if you find a pocket box that's affordable.
I have two 24 sets of these watercolors....and I only use them for “casual” painting. There is something about them I just don’t like, they don’t feel like artist grade to me. They are too opaque for my taste, and some of the colors dry chalky. I use them for journaling, making greeting cards, mixed media pieces....but when it comes to more serious painting, this brand just doesn’t work for me.
Watch everybody's reviews, but one thing I have noticed all paints from China, Russia, and Japan- even holbein have a funny smell- some more than others...What is it???
Owings Art thanks for responding.right now watching white nights review, they're the first that I noticed the smell..was familiar- so opened again the Holbiens .same smell. Recently ordered cheap winsor newton from china...really smelled.took them upstairs to dry out for week in front of window that sucks air out upstairs for summer. I think it is a filler..want to start making own watercolors and do not want to use if this is a FILLER I smell. If you ever find out I would love to know.will keep watching and thank you for no b.s. ratings.marj ently
Ok we get it you like watercolors how about reviewing something different for a change, don't get me wrong I like your channel but as soon I see you reviewing another watercolor I don't even watch it keep it fresh and change it up.
+Cynthia Ibarra Hi Cynthia - Thank you for the feedback. I always appreciate hearing from people about their preferences. Thanks as well for recognizing my consistency :-) - Have a great day! - Marty
White Nights was truly my first set of really good watercolors, I still love them. Carmine is one of my favorite colors in the set it is beautiful.
+S.Arts.Wut :-) Thanks for the note, these are very cool and I'm really liking them. - Marty
S.Arts.Wut I read that their Carmine is not lightfast. 😐
***** well great. I hope so. Maybe they have reformulated since handprint.com reviewed them. It was a while ago. handprint.com
I love mixing carmine with emerald green! The colour you get is amazing
Marty if you have time after having a life, family, working and you tubing... a fun project would be to paint a world map using art products made In the countries they are produced in.
+O2BSoLucky That's a great idea! Sounds like a very fun project and I love maps. Maybe some day, when I retire :-) - Marty
tssss the best idea tkns
Awesome review!!! I got a set of 24 if these water colors for Christmas and I love them! So I was really happy that you liked them too!

+Scout [né Anonymous] Hi Anonymous - For sure. These won't break the bank at all and they are Artist quality. :-) - Marty
- Marty
Hello Marty ! I was looking forward to learn more about these watercolors, thanks for the nice review! Your opinion is highly appreciated.
+Adriana Blanco Thank you Adriana, I appreciate the comments and the support. Have a GREAT day! - Marty
seems like a very nice product
Marty has a good point that you can mix most other colours from the 12 though.
david ospina I love to play cribbage, so I know instantly the sizing you were eluding to. :-)
thank you for this review! it was really helpfull. I recently got myself a 36 colour set because I found it for 45$ on sale. which was an awesome deal. I love these paints a lot.
+TheFutureIsYellow You got a GREAT deal there, these are really solid paints. - Marty
+Owings Art I'm sorry! I meant ETCHING... autocorrect :-p. Of course, I love Steve also!! But I do need to get better for sketching too!!
Windkisssed LOL, now I get it. :-) - Marty
Thank you! - Marty
Great review Marty! I really like the white nights metallic paints, they're great too!
+starshinesoldier Hi Star - I should try the Yarka's? Are they on par with these in your opinion?
+Owings Art I would say that they are identical! My Yarka's behaved just like the White Nights(easy to wet and a thick application that you need to thin down a little). So I don't think you need to try them. Unless you want to of course!
starshinesoldier That sounds like a dare. :-)
+Owings Art XD No no, not a dare! I honestly think they are pretty much the same thing.
starshinesoldier :-) Gotcha.
- Marty
Thanks for your review :)
I have the 24 color box set and encountered one problem. The paints get tacky and the other day I tried to slide off the cardboard enclosure and it wouldn't budge as the paints had stuck to the inside. I had to rip the cardboard from the side and prize them off individually. I've since moved each full pan to little plastic tubs (which you can buy from soap supplies shops)
Other than that the paints are really great. Lots of browns though. ^^;;
+Art Studio 48 Hey thanks for the tip on these. I haven't encountered that, but I'll keep my eyes on that. - Marty
They W&N watercolor markers are the best.
Great review...thanks for sharing!
Great job again Marty
+Bartholo Clumpdink Thank you! And thank you for watching. :-)
the Sonnet version of these are just as nice, easy to mix great colors and the price value is great. i have the 24 full pan set.
Silly! Haha!
I think you might be on to something with the partial pans....lol. :-)
paintart on ebay sells individual pans for $1.99 each plus flat rate shipping.
Definitely pleased I bought mission gold pure set instead. Thanks Marty for the review 👍
Thanks for the note Kaye and thank you for watching. Glad you like them.
YESSSSSSSS!!!! The blue of Whitenights is THE-BEST-BLUE in the whole world. ;;______;
The quality is soooo good with such a price. Absolute bae.
+Alice Shinnizle :-)
I'm ordering my set of 36 white knights and part of the draw was the blues. Obviously the other colors too or I wouldn't be forking out that money for the 36. But blue is very important to me xD it looks lovely!
***** Nice.
I have the big set of these and I LOVE them. My first professional set. :)
:-) Do you find them opaque? Some people complain about that with Russian watercolors.
I haven't had that problem unless i grab too much paint. The paint comes up really easily. :)
Okay thanks.
I think these come in tube form as well.
Thank you, Marty
I'm curious what you will think about the Gansai.
- Marty
Ahhh Finally. An artist quality paint that is affordable in the eu. 1euro90 per pan is sooo nice.
Nice price. Hope you like it.
I hope so too. I'm low on budget, as usual this time of year, lol. So maybe nxt moth or with christmas :)
A .Vultink Maybe Santa Claus. :-)
Marty, have you ever given a paint a low rating of 1, 2 or less than 5?? I purchased their Sonnets-24 , they have become my favorite watercolors!
These are the paints I use, I love them!
+Amanda Graves :-)
+AntiFormKeyblade Yes, there are some great Japanese paints like Holbein and others. I ordered the Missions and I'm going to try them out soon.
7.5 for watercolor that's grainy and not lightfast? M'kay.
elsa Grace They're different that's for sure, but I don't know if they're lightfast or not yet, because my tests aren't complete. That said, I thought they were above average in several categories.
Japanese artists watercolors: Holbein, Kuretake, Kusakabe, KFS, Turner, Talens (1991 - part of Sakura Colour Corporation Japan), Sakura (Koi), Pentel (student??) and other..
+Weiran Yang I haven't completed it yet, it takes like 3 months or longer to really test it. - marty
I watched you review van Gogh and you seemed to like them do you have a connection to amazon on your you tube so you can get a little credit?
- Sana'a
BIOnerd93 For sure, I'll try to remember that. Thank you! - Marty
+Owings Art ☺
But then, White Nights is artist quality, and I believe are in the same price range as Cotman's (if not cheaper!) so you might want to try those.
love the review , these watercolors seem great , Im curious have you tried out the sonnet ? or is it the same paint as white nights ?
I'm not sure if it's the same or not, I haven't heard about the sonnet. Do you have a link to them?
+Owings Art I saw them on amazon www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01G9YV7NY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467420434&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=sonnet+watercolor&dpPl=1&dpID=512LXYMs7vL&ref=plSrch
vikkyruiz1618 Okay, thank you!
what watercolors do you recommend for a beginner are the cittman ok
+Lee Jennings I would try the Lukas, Daler Rowney Aquafine or maybe the Van Gogh watercolors. Hope that helps. - Marty
thank you
Lee Jennings Absolutely!
Have you tried Yarka watercolors? I think they are made in the same factory as the White knights.
I ordered some. Hoping they are as good quality as the reviews I have read.
+Melissa Aldosari Hi Melissa - I think they are the exact same paints actually. At least that's what other viewers have told me. - Marty
+Owings Art Thank you so much! That's awesome!
Very big thx for this review
+Ivan Malkovich For sure Ivan. Thank you! - Marty
Hey Marty.
-Pete
IllustrationsByPete Ha! I'm not sure that wouldn't be too boring. - Marty
when i use them i have to be careful to not pick up too much paint, even when the pans are dry! super awesome paint. If you are careful you can get a nice transparency. i was painting a naked lady, then decided to give her a see though blouse; it worked like a dream. These paints are VERY vibrant. If you paint a "realistic style" it might be a good idea to "muddy" the colours on the pallet a touch
They are worth it for sure! Perfect for broke students comme moi that are looking for artist grade paints :)
+david ospina Hi David - I agree with you about these paints and the cost isn't too bad so as you point out they're affordable. - Marty
great review,thank you
+LovkynaPeral Thank you. :-)
Still learning to use the ones I have...😉
Valarie Connell For sure! Greatt fun in any size. :-)
+Owings Art 😃
@owingsart Could you please add Kuretake Gansai tambi Japanese watercolor and Derwent drawing color pencils in your list in future!!! it's my wish..
+Sathish Kumar They are on my list Sathish. Thank you. - Marty
+Owings Art sorry for belated reply thannks a lot!!!
Sathish Kumar :-)
Shimelody I find VanGogh to be slightly better. White Knights was too chalky.
I'm ordering mine at the beginning of July (getting the 36 set for a wider range of colors) and will hopefully have them by August or the latest, September. My mom doesn't like the sticker price for the 36 set but I firmly believe it will be worth the investment. Thanks for the review :)
Hope you like them.
+Owings Art same here. They seem like they're going to be the perfect companion set to my MGraham palette. I won't need paint for a good long while with these two brands.
***** For sure, but have you tried Daniel Smith?
+Owings Art I certainly have it on my wishlist. I just don't have lots of breathing space in my pocketbook right now so I have to be really selective. I really want to try them down the line when my tube paints start getting low though :)
***** I hear you. Yeah, it's not easy on the wallet, having this addiction to art supplies. :-)
it looks like they dont blend well in the first test in the bottom of the paper the colors didnt blend
Hmmm not sure.
Are the white nights the same as Yarka? Why the name difference? Is one Artist and one student quality?
I believe that's exactly right elsa. ~Marty
maybe the binders or the case is different haha
As some people have mentioned, I'd never heard of this brand either. They almost seem more like a gouache type paint. Thanks for posting a great review!
+Walcott Fine Art Yes, they look a little like Gouache until you thin them with water. After that they work very good and are really transparent. :-) - Marty
Could you please review the Spectrum Aqua Watercolor Pencils? :)
+Amy He I will add them to my list Amy. Thank you very much. - Marty
i understand that this set is the exception with it's full pans, but the fact that they could sell a 12 set with full pans, with good paint, and still make a profit (they wouldn't price it this low if they weren't making money from it), it sort of makes every other pocket set feel like a scam with their measly half pans, despite costing about the same as this set. it comes across like every other company are grossly overcharging for their pocket paint sets just because they can, while st petersburg are the only ones who price their paint fairly. either that is true, or the 12 set is a loss leader for st. petersburg, which i find unlikely.
That may only be half the story. These paints may not contain high grade pigments and I think it's a little sketchy that they don't publish the types of pigments they use.
What paper r u using?
Fluid Watercolor paper. :-)
+Owings Art oh ok. Thank you!
Marty,.not expensive as in....thank you, Marty! :)
+Rhonda Magee :-) not expensive, but quality = happy. :-)
Great review :)
Thank you very much. - Marty
I like these paints

+Erin S. That's a nice set, but I'm looking for a smaller pocket box. Sort of collecting the pocket boxes for a future review. - Marty :-) PS - Let me know if you find a pocket box that's affordable.
+Owings Art will do :)
Sure, and I know exactly what you mean, because they didn't make my short list or my top ten.

hi marty hope you are having a great day. Shannon
+Art Junkie I am now Shannon! I'm always glad to hear from you. - Marty
you too my friend
Pan watercolors frustrate me. Watercolor pencils is what I'll use.
Whatever works best for you.
Watch everybody's reviews, but one thing I have noticed all paints from China, Russia, and Japan- even holbein have a funny smell- some more than others...What is it???
Hi Marjorie - I'm not sure. I never noticed.
If you ever find out I would love to know.will keep watching and thank you for no b.s. ratings.marj

Дороу , тут есть русские ?:)
Красочки очень хорошие у самой такие есть
Я понятия не имею, о чем вы пишете. У вас есть вопрос о краске или это Вальдимир Путин пытается троллировать мой канал?
Some music to open your video is fine but the continuous noise of it in the background while you're speaking??? Makes it unwatchable.
MrC_5150 Thanks for the feedback regarding the sound. I will be mindful of that in future videos. Have a great holiday! ~Marty
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ~
Your thumbs remind me of turtles
LOL. Thanks, I think.
- Marty
The lighting of your video is very bad for this type of tutorial. Improve it, please!
It would show integrity of we boycotted White Knights, Sonnet etc until Ukraine is free from Russian aggression.
Oh get a life. This is about watercolors, not political statements ffs
