Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), a high school senior, moves with his mother Lucille (Randee Heller) from Newark, New Jersey to Reseda, a neighborhood in the Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley area. Their apartment's handyman is an eccentric but kind and humble Okinawan immigrant named Kesuke Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita). One thing I just realized about this scene. Miyagi wasn't just going to Cobra Kai to ask Kreese to have his students leave Daniel alone, he also wanted to see what kind of style of Karate Kreese was teaching. The way he stands there in complete silence, watching everything. He's observing what kind of martial arts Cobra Kai was. It allowed Miyagi to know what techniques to teach Daniel to counter Cobra Kai style if his attempt at diplomacy failed.
Never thought of this
God that’s genius. I agree as Mr Miyagi told Daniel there’s no such thing as bad student, only bad teacher.
Explains why Daniel only knew a little bit of the Miyagi Do style at first.
Old dogs are the best hunters. Miyagi just sizing everything thing a true general.

"Miyagi's words are so carefully chosen they don't give the other guy any excuse to get violent; Miyagi uses the language as carefully as his hands or arms to ward off blows and gain an advantage. It's refreshing to see a completely original character like this old man. " -- Roger Ebert

Well, the "old man" just beat the crap out of his 5 best students.
um yeah, they did attack him first, it was his legal right to defend himself, wouldn't you done the same if you were in Miyagi's position?
3:34 I love how Mr. Miyagi looks at Kreese like “You know I can take your world apart right?”
I love the respect that Miyagi and Kreese have for each other, they both recognize they are masters, and the little bow they give each other at the end highlights it, love that
Miaygi is not just a master, he is like some Super Grandmaster, from out of the Matrix! He beat Kreese twice, and Kreese never got a single hit on him! I don't know, what Dan Kreese is, I'm assuming 7th Dan+ Army training, so he must be pretty damn good, but this is all relative, to your opponents skills! Miaygi certainly must be some Nofap master too, like Tyson, guy probably didn't Fap in his youth, for like 20,000+ days.
I don’t know kreese mocked him
Not only to convey respect but also saying I am taking you at your word and you better not break it or you will be shame upon yourself and your reputation.
@@youaregoingtolovethis That's being too modest. Kreese saw red. I don't think he cared about reputation.
Kreese has no respect for Myagi. Even after Miyagi beats him, as that would be admitting failure. THIS is Kreese's weakness, and this is what Johnny realizes in the TV show, and why he has to split from Kreese. *Johnny* learns to respect Miyagi... unlike Kreese

@@georgeprchal3924 Thank you, Captain Kreese.
@@HellhoundX90 It was an honor to serve.
Pat Morita was great for this movie, not only for his acting but through excellent use of his height. He showed that being small means nothing and that he was a much bigger man than the karate class instructor. His strength, courage and overall humility shined through his eyes. Great, underrated actor.
And it's even better in Karate Kid 3 when he faces a 6'5 Terry Silver. Part 3 is terrible but the fight scene against Kreese and Silver is the best of the trilogy.
Any karate vet will tell you its the little guy you have to look out for. While not the best in power they are extremely fast.
to be the best fighter takes strength, speed, and technique. i agree strength is great! but it means nothing without either two. Never underestimate old people either! ;)
What is the point of being strong if you cant hit your oponent? Mayweather is one of the best boxers in history based on that concept.
Gichin Funakoshi the man who took karate from Okinawa and made it popular in Japan and then worldwide was known for being a small, frail-like man. Good observation about Miyagi here.
This makes me wish Pat Morita could've been a part of Cobra Kai. I know not many people live to their late 80s and it's unrealistic to wish that. But the character of Miyagi really brought soul to this story. He is missed.
I hope we get a Season 5 Cobra Kai Pat Morita story line when he was younger or a prequel movie..
@@joeljohnson6137 Maybe Hillary Swank can also make a guess appearance in Cobra Kai and tell her experience with Mr. Miyagi; and what happened, after the event's of that god-awful sequel movie called, The Next Karate Kid.
@@JP-sb6ll lol I thought it was a cheesy good movie tho
There's an entire chapter of the Tao Te Ching dedicated to emptiness, describing how we make a cup out of clay, but it's the emptiness which makes it useful, and we build a house out of bricks and wood but what makes it useful is the emptiness inside. It's somehow more fitting that Mr. Miyagi is represented in Cobra Kai by his absence.
The brilliant part about Cobra Kai is that Pat Morita is a part of the show despite not actually being in it beyond a couple flashbacks.
Miyagi is one of the coolest characters in the history of cinema. Pat deserved an oscar for playing him so well. And the movie is really about Kreese vs Miyagi, not Johnny vs Daniel. And Miyagi clearly being the better man, the better fighter, and most importantly the better teacher. It's why Johnny lost, and they took down all of his students. Because Miyagi is that good.
I love that subtle little nod Mr. Miyagi & Kreese give each other at the end. Even though they are Rivals, they still give each other the respect, acknowledging the scope of their influence & fighting ability...
The way Johnny says, "Yes, Sensei" at 2:47 always makes me laugh. He's such a smug little smart-ass.
Exactly!
His "QUIET!" is the highlight of Cobra Kai.
Not a smart-ass, but a really loyal student.

@@jaydynjackson1320, he gets worse in KK3 dealing with Barnes. Daniel seemed to finally be becoming a brave confident skilled fighter in KK2 when fighting Chozen in the death match. Daniel wasn't just getting his ass kicked until that lucky last shot at the last second of the fight like he did in KK1 and KK3. With Chozen, Daniel was wailing on him numerous times with his drum technique throws before having him on the ground saying "live or die, man?". It just makes you wonder more what the hell happened to him with Barnes

@@alvexok5523 I think Daniel was completely taken back by Barnes’s skill set. I’m sure confidence was high after the death match, as anyone’s would be. I thought Kreese was a cartoon villain but Terry takes the cake in that category 😂
I love the depth they give both in Cobra Kai. Thomas Ian Griffith never really got to show his character skills in Karate Kid 3. Cobra Kai S4 just wowed me.
There’s something about Martin Kove’s performance in this that doesn’t feel 1-dimensional cartoon 80s villain. He legit feels evil and menacing with very little screen time. I think it’s the second best performance of the film behind Pat Morita.

I often forget how much of Karate Kid is about father figures and how men from older generations had come home broken from war. Both Miyagi and Kreese had war trauma, but where Kreese channeled his trauma through violence and bullying, Miyagi had chosen a life of peace and lonesomeness. Karate Kid becomes an allegory for how young men without fathers may come to a fork in the road - power through violence or maturity through discipline?
Yea but you also have to remember the reason why Miyagi chose a peaceful and quiet life, when he learned karate from his father the matches were not for points. And the the fact that he served in the war and probably had to take a few lives is putting it mildly. Just shows the kind of respect he has for karate and life, also why he hates fighting.
I like how Kreese refers to Mr Miyagi as "old man" a number of times during this scene and now Kreese is about two decades older than what Mr Miyagi was here.
And Mr Myagi is dead
he never did complete those 60 push ups did he lol
Kane Knightwolf i was about to ask the same thing...
His sensei told him to fall in. He would never disobey his sensei.
It took him 38 seconds to do ten; that's when the camera angle changed. And he probably did fall in.
The scene cuts out before the Cobra Kai I wondered about. There was some fat-faced kid with a shit-eating grin shown when Miyagi and Daniel were leaving. Was that 'Snake', the Karate Kid III character who really should've been named 'Piggy'?

"Get your boy on the mat" rather than "get your act together"
The funny thing is that at exactly this point in the exchange Miyagi has not yet "dropped a challenge."
It says a ot about Kreese that Miyagi literally says "ask leave boy alone", but Kreese sees that as a challenge to a fight nonetheless.
@traplandmuzik, the line was,
"This is a _karate dojo,_ not a knitting class! You don't come in _my dojo,_ and drop a challenge and leave, old man! Now, you get your boy on the mat, or you and I will have a _major problem!"_

@@lawrence142002 i was thinking about this today actually. I think he will attempt to coach Johnny and Daniel out of jail (maybe) as to how to take Terry down. Alternative scenario: he gets out, and teams up with Daniel Chozen and Johnny to take down Terry and whoever he brings with him, maybe Barnes even, and form one massive dojo with sub sections for Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang!
@@lawrence142002 I watch the whole season 4 all 10 episodes in one day. Good writing. Good cliffhangers keeps you watching.
He is an actor who makes the absolute most out of every single line of dialogue he is given. He savors each word as if it was a fine wine. This is what sets him apart.
In the first movie I liked him a lot. He’s a very tough guy, and feels pretty insulted since he doesn’t have the facts. He just sees four of his best students coming in beat to shit, and you know they made some bullshit up about Daniel goading them into a fight and then getting jumped by some master hiding in the bushes. And I’m sure seeing he’s Asian tripped his Nam ptsd up bad too.
Overall, until he starts telling Bobby to bust Daniel’s knee, and tells Johnny to target his leg more, he wasn’t really in the wrong. He’s a misguided, tough man pissed at the guy and the wimp who managed to get the jump on his students. He’s a combat instructor, not a life coach. The biggest issue is that he and his students see him as one.
Martin Kove is epic as John Kreese
I once read somewhere that Mr Kove had trouble bringing out the bully persona that the director wanted until they cut the sleeves off his dobok.
He was a terrible teacher
He just looks evil
Martin Kove was born to play John Kreese!
@@oldscoolgaming6700 I believe that's the point.
I like how at 2:19 the actor of Johnny is trying to hold in his laugh lol
I have discovered a new appreciation for this scene in-particular. Mr Miyagi doesn’t blink once during the confrontation. And of course “Always look eye!”. Outwardly he’s calm and collected, but I get the sense that he was waiting for Kreese to throw a sucker punch, and he was ready for it.
It’s great acting. Mr Miyagi executes this perfect mental dance where he isn’t looking for a fight, but he also isn’t taking any shit or backing an inch. It’s almost as if he earned a sliver respect from Kreese.
The most accurate thing is that it does not seek to initiate aggression but is prepared for an imminent and unexpected conflict. @@miked2075

What really surprises me about Mr. Miyagi is not just that he is an insane grandmaster of Karate, no what surprises me is that he is an actual adult, after watching Cobra Kai and seeing every adult act like a confused teenager and an ineffectual parent/teacher, and then rewatching this movie, I end up realizing that Mr. Miyagi truly was lightyears ahead from everyone else in terms of wisdom and self discipline so many years before the series, he never truly went out to look for a fight or for justice or anything like that, he was not ruled by ego or pride or anger, he was always patient and understanding, yet firm and the same time he wasn't looking to take control of his student/son figure the way Daniel mostly did, he knew when to let someone find their own way and when someone needed a challenge that maybe was a little outside the box, he was aware of reality unlike most modern parents when it comes to bullies, he was a true adult figure in Daniel's life in such a way that even in the future years after his demise he was still able to be a guide to Daniel and pretty much everyone else.
Sadly, that’s truth in television. A distressingly high number of adults I’ve met working retail clearly did not mature, they just got older.
@@magicaltour1 Yeah, many of us could have benefited from a mister Miyagi. It wasn't to be for most of us though.
Mr Miyagi never blinked or took his eyes off kreese He was ready to take him down at any moment that was a great scene!
Hi Steven do you know any action Movie I can watch
Creese looks great here, AND STILL DOES! Still a bad ass in his 70's. "I like that"
Hi Shane can I watch this on Netflix
Johnny Lawrence was the best bully. Dude had hands!!
Dibiase He was definitely a better character that Mike Barnes, even though Barnes is more lethal in terms of fighting
Mike barnes was the best
@@christiannunez4292 johnny was better than mike
Silver by far the "best" worst bully... physiological warfare is more dangerous than any fight
Kreese is so butthurt about this that he is still trying to fight Daniel 38 years later in 2022. So much so that Johnny is now on Daniel's side.
Such a great scene with great dialogue and tension-building, the movie that started it all. Martin Kove is a great actor.
I wonder how Kreese reacted when Tommy came in to class with his arm in a sling.
"What are you looking at, finish him!" LOL Kreese is STILL scary.
All the deep fake/A.I sorcery of the 2020s will never hold a candle to the organic nuances of these 80s classics.
Martin played this part so well. You can feel the hate the audience had for Kreese.
0:01 I love their stereotypical 80s villian chant while practicing, "I Kill, I Kill, I Kill" lol.
1:16 is that logan Paul when he was 14?😂
If he’s a time traveler from 1984😂😂
I wonder if then and there, in that moment during his silent observation of the class that Mr Miyagi knew that Kreese’s style of Karate was Tung-Su Do. It makes sense as to why he taught Daniel only certain moves to counter Cobra Kai’s style, a smart play I must say. R.I.P Mr Miyagi, you are greatly missed.
3:13 ...did anyone else notice the guy on the left with his arm in a cast? LOL, this scene sets the tone for how intense Kreese was with his karate training and methodology. You could be in a wheelchair and he'd still be yelling at you to get on the mat and spar.
He is at the very start throwing shoulder punches too
1:32 😍😍😍😍😍😍 Johnny's smile
😊😊😊😊

Anyone who's supposedly as experienced as Kreese should know better than to stick his finger in someone's face like that. He's just asking to get it broken.
"You're a pushy little bastard, but I like that" Martin Kove has made a whole career out of playing this character; a classic 80s villain and he only had a small part.
“We do not train to be merciful here. Mercy is for the weak. Here. On the streets. On competition. A man confronts you, he is the enemy. & an enemy deserves no mercy. What is the problem Mr. Lawrence”
(Years later… Mr. Diaz)
What the hell is Tommt doing showing up for a karate class with his arm in fucking sling? Is Kreese so insane he's likely to come to his house and drag him out to the dojo if he doesn't show up for training even with a busted arm? And does Kreese really not question why his prize student has a black eye and his cronie is all banged up? You'd think if asked, the Kai would have told him "we got jumped by a tiny Asian guy whilst beating up an Italian stick insect" and Kreese would have immediately realized who Daniela nd Miyagi were the second they walked in...
People can still work-out with broken arms. I still go to the gym when I broke mine.
Bonita Rose yes but I bet doing karate with a broken arm is more tricky
Well, maybe he didn't really want to fall behind, and at least stay in some form of shape instead of just resting. Plus, would you really want to wait until you're better and catch up in a class with KREESE as your teacher? As long as he didn't push himself too hard, he would kept up alright.
It's called work ethic. I attended karate class with a broken hand as a teenager. You get hurt in a fight, it doesn't just stop. It's a good life lesson to work through pain. No whiny victim bullshit.
Miyagi jumped them from behind. He is a busybody and a child beater.
