    Excelent video, nice step by step intructions really helpful. Two comments:
    1)The simulation fails after the top plates fully compresses the cube. By reducing the speed a bit this can be avoided.
    2)Currently the elements are not deleted when they "fail" This effect can be added by changing the material properties(and the element type)

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад

      Ksenagos Utumbo Thanks for the feedback. I guess it failed because of the element type properties. This can be avoided as you said, by changing the element's properties to have more freedom while bending.

    HI! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your tutorials, they are very useful.
    Excuse me, can you tell me which is the way to make a the fastest way of the response of the job, i mean... the results ? how can I calculated the Johnson Cook parameter?
    you´ll help me so much, please.

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад

      +Scarlett Aymerich Thanks for the positive feedback. Now regarding the fastest response of the result, I did not get what you mean exactly. But if you are trying to say how to shorten the time of the job, then I can tell you that this depends on the PC you are using and the nature of the job itself.
      Now regarding the Jhonson-Cook parameter I can tell you that this parameter is a material parameter that has to do something with the plasticity. Thus you do not need to calculate it. In this video I used a paper that uses the parameter to account for the plasticity of the steel material, but if you have any other material without this parameter it is ok.

    Can you explain why did you select the box dimension as 76 X 76 (or 38 on both sides of the axes) and why did you select top surface (should you not select bottom surface here? so that the box becomes 80 X 80) ? Why shouldn't we select mid surface and 78 X 78 as our dimension ?

    Hi Sam,
    Your video is very helpful to me and the details are well explained.
    I need clarification on choosing time period, in above video you have choose o.o6 as time period.
    If i choose time period as 0.1 does the results are going to change ?
    How to conclude the time period while performing explicit analysis?
    Can you please clarify me?
    Thank you for great video !!
    Regards,
    Dilip

    Thanks your video so much. I wonder Can you run this simulation with "STATIC,RIKS" instead of "DYNAMIC EXPLICIT"?

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад

      thanhha Tran In static kind of model, you will not be able to add a predefined field of velocity for your boundary condition. What I mean is that you can do a crash test with STATIC model, but it won't be similar to this one because boundary conditions for velocity will be different. In other words, the simulation will be a compression simulation.

    Great Tutorial man =))
    Could you help me with an issue? I`m performing a crash simualation on Abaqus, and I`m facing a problem where I want to increase the deformation scale factor, but when I do it the model tends to go out of my field of view, due to the initial velocity. I wonder how could I place a local coordinate system on the model, for me to follow it during the animation in time.
    thanks for your attention

    sir
    I am doing my project using ABAQUS. I am using it first time. Its a honeycomb structre and higher order structure to calculate its energy absorption and crushing.I dont know what to input in mass, velocity and time period..Can you please help how to input or what values should be given
    Sincerely
    Christin

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад +2

      Christin Pious Well that depends on the application. The idea of this crash test is to simulate a crash/accident when a car is hit axially (Head-on collision). In this case there are two frontal longitudinals in the chassis of the vehicle which are responsible of absorbing the energy from the crash. The tube in the video represent the frontal portion of one of these longitudinal which has the cross section of 80x80 mm. And the upper plate represent the other car's mass. From research I can tell you that two longitudinal absorbs 50% or less of the kinetic energy of a car mass which means that one longitudinal is designed to absorb almost 25% of the kinetic energy of the impacting car. Now considering an average sedan car that weighs about 1100 kg, both longitudinals will absorb 550 kg of its kinetic energy, thus one longitudinal will absorb 275kg of kinetic energy, and this is why the mass of the upper plate is 275kg. As for the velocity, these longitudinals are considered to be effective when the impacting car's speed is 56 km/hr = 15.6 m/s, the speed where the vehicle is crash tested in many vehicle safety organization's test rigs. And this is why the speed of the upper plate is set to 15.6 m/s. Finally for the time period you can basically assume how much will it take for such crash to occur in real life and then use this assumption as an input to your simulation. In such crash test scenarios, the whole process takes place in matters of milliseconds and therefore 0.06 sec=60 ms was selected as a good time period. Also you should assure that you chose a good time period for your simulation so you avoid wasting time running the simulation again. For example, if I have selected 0.03 sec as my time period in this simulation, the crash would have not been completed (to the point where the upper plate bounces of the crushed tube) and I would have had to repeat the simulation with an increased time period.
      I hope that I have answered all of your question and helped you ..... and if you have any other questions do not hesitate to ask me. You can send me your email privately so I can further help you with your project and ABAQUS.

    Sir,
    Why isn't it necessary to tie the top plate with the square tube in the Interaction module?

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад

      Surajit Kalita The top plat should not have any tie constraint with the tube so it can bounce back after the tube is crushed to it its final limit (When the tube is extremely crushed and cannot be crushed further).

    Hi, 9:14 While assigning section to geometry, how to control in which direction the thickness builds?

  • @harshitpuri9351
    @harshitpuri9351 9 лет назад +1

    but you haven't assigned property to deformable plates also the job aborted it can't proceed unless you define plate rigid. i got missing section errors i just verified. if i am wrong plz correct me

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  9 лет назад +1

      Harshit Puri The two plates must be created as rigid plates with no sections (properties). Only the upper plate has a reference mass of 275 kg and a velocity of 15.6 m/s. And this is because we want to see how much energy the tube will absorb under the worst case scenario for a crash, which is when a car hit a rigid body like a tree or a post. Therefore modeling the plate as rigid with only a a mass and speed condition will assure this case.
      As for the errors you have received, please check Ksenagos Utumbo's comment....
      Thanks for the feedback

  • @MohamedIraqiHousseini

    can you tell me please how much time did the job took to complete ? and what's the optimal configuration of step to have the minimum time for pretty accurate results ?

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  7 лет назад

      The time period refers to the total time needed to complete the crushing of the tube. In this simulation it was 0.06 seconds (60 milliseconds), which is reasonable because the crushing is dynamic and the crushing mass is 275 kg in our case, and hence it would not take much time. The total running time for a simulation therefore depends on the time period and the CPU you are using.
      As for the accuracy of the results, it does not depend on the step time, however on the way you model your test. The more you define your model by providing accurate material information and good setup presentation, the more likely to get accurate results. Of course you have to validate your simulation results by comparing them to an actual crushing test.

      Thanks for your reactivity ! It would be very nice from you to answer this question concerning my specific case :
      I'm actually working on the optimisation of cross-sectionnal shape of a car crash-box, and in order to have some results I need to try at least 12 different cross sections of the crash box !
      For the design ! I chose CATIA V5 to make the part ! then I imported it to abaqus and i followed the instructions in this video with some changes (In property module : I created solid homogenous section instead of shell, and in Mesh Module : the element type is Tet with 5 in the size of the element), then I run the job and I'm actually estimating more than 5 hours for completion (I have a core i7-4700HQ processor) which is a pretty long time !
      Can you tell me what's the best way to simulate the crash of parts imported from CATIA V5 with a minimum time for the job calculations ?!

    • @samsami328
      @samsami328  7 лет назад

      I don't see why you chose to model the crash box as a solid homogeneous section. These crash boxed are usually shell tubular structures, so just change the section to shell homogeneous.
      Also, what is your part file extension?. If you want you can send me your cae file and I will check it for you and tell what is wrong with it. Just write your email.

    Hi,
    I am trying to model a compression test for aluminium. In my model I have a 2D rigid plate and a 2D deformable part. And also my part have some space in itself. I used dynamic explicit step with 0.01 time period. It also run somewhere. But then exited with an error. It has some convergence diffuculties. I also tried to adaptive mesh but it gave me same error early. Also I can see the result of solved part and I looked reaction force. I saw too much oscilation for force-time graph. Can anyone help me to solve this problem. You can dowload the inp file below:
