When facing depression, I am always reminded by Prophet Muhammad story when he was burying his only son when he died. The prophet was shedding some tears and smiling at the same time. When asked why were you shedding tears and smiling, he said the tears for what happened to my only son, the smile is for accepting God's fate.

Absolutely incredible interview! I can’t explain how much I desperately needed to hear this Ali. I’m in a pivotal time in my life and finding it difficult to go after my dreams because I have severe depression that has all but paralyzed me most of my 43yrs of life. This is so inspiring and opened my eyes so I can see that I can choose to be happy and to move forward towards my dreams instead of continuing to tell myself I’m stuck.

The greatest gift my mother gave me was was understanding to be happy when we were poor. Appreciating the simple things. When you can achieve happiness with having very little in your life, you can gain a much happier life. My mum also would say to me "You go after money, all you get is money". Great interview Ali, I enjoyed this one.

I haven't finished the podcast but I can't wait to comment. I totally agree with this statement : "Happiness is a choice". Totally true!!! I'm often asked by people why I'm always happy and why I'm always smiling. The truth is simply because I decided to and also, I don't let anyone take happiness from me. I am also fully conscious of all the blessings I have had in my life.

I’m still mulling this interview over in my head and probably should let it stew longer before making not so clarified conclusions. I don’t think Mo is saying anything new than what we’ve already have heard, it’s repackaged wisdom from thinkers, philosophers and religious/spiritual leaders of old in a modern format for modern times. Multi-faith? That comes across egotistical, could be understood any one religion is deficient - playing god here? It’s a mish mash of liberal religious ideologies to fit the modern way of life. There is a spiritual vacuum in the west and to fill the chasm adopt and cherry pick practices and beliefs from eastern religions i.e meditation, yoga etc. Mo, seems to me is doing the exact same thing, promoting liberalism with elements of religious wisdom of old. Begs the question, why not just follow a religion or way of life that is all encompassing, coherent and contains no contradictions as opposed to the fashion and trends of modern gurus born yesterday in contrast to well attested religions with a rich long tradition.

1st time on this channel and I must say exceptional conversation...
About your idea of domain of the privilege, I am going to drop something I had literally written yesterday, that we hear the rich and successful and privileged people say that these metrics of success don’t make a person happy, but we don’t believe them. Or we believe that it’s just them being ungrateful, when I have all that they have, I am definitely going to be happy. It’s only after chasing goal after goal and achieving them that you realize, that they might be right. But by that time, you have people around you that wouldn’t believe you.

It’s hard for me not to see the two sides. If I’m always looking down and seeing how good I have it, how will I be motivated to move up in life and be successful? Should I sacrifice my happiness until I achieve my goal and then switch to searching for happiness? It seems like these gurus already go through the trials of making it in life and then switching to find happiness. Can both perspectives coexist?

    • @asfankhan6777
      @asfankhan6777 2 года назад

I struggle with this paradox myself - infact I have struggled with this for a while. I'll share how my thoughts have developed so far, maybe it'll be useful to you.
Happiness cannot be the goal. Happiness is a way of being. Therefore, you must cherish what you have and be grateful for it. Through ups and downs of life, happiness must be a constant. "Will yourself" to be happy everyday.
Goals are a way of providing meaning to our existence. We make goals for ourselves so that we can get up everyday and pursue something worthy. The pursuit itself will have ups and downs (what we call ups and downs of life) owing to two kinds of reasons - controllable and uncontrollable. Learn from controllable reasons and make peace with the uncontrollable ones. Therefore pursuit of a goal in life must not affect our ability to happy.
In conclusion: Happiness is a way of being, goals and results are a means to learn and accept. Hence they can coexist.
These ideas seem idealistic, yes. But we don't have follow them completely. The utility of these ideas starts when we start applying them imperfectly. This has helped me make sense of this paradox.
      My 2 cents.

I found this an interesting interview, thank you! I just want to explain what happiness is, in my experience. I believe that the reason we even exist, is for relationship. Firstly with God, and also with other people. I know there are many different faiths and worldviews. But I follow Jesus- and having a relationship with Him, knowing Him with me all the time (whether that is when I am talking to Him (praying), or reading the Bible, or even playing computer games, or doing anything!) is such a secure and love-filled way of living. If I am worried, I tell Him. He makes me feel held, and peaceful. If I am happy? I share it with Him. He loves me through my good and bad days.
He also helps me to be patient, and kind, to other people. Relationships aren't perfect in this world. I totally get that. I believe we're in a messy, messed up world. Yes there are good things and experiences in the world. But there is also a lot of suffering and pain and, ultimately, death. I believe that Jesus is the way to have eternal life, beyond death. Jesus said this: that eternal life is about relationship with Father God, and Himself. One day, those who know Jesus will live forever with Him, in a new physical (but perfect!) world, where there'll be no more tears, pain, suffering, or death. But He also wants to be with us in our down to earth, everyday lives, in the here and now! He wants to help us, as our God, but also be our friend.
I just want to tell people about Jesus. Because there is hope in Him. And abundant, safe, unconditional love, even when we screw up! Man, I do so many things wrong, but He is helping me to be more loving. But He is always there for me, and will always forgive. I tell you this, you can talk to Jesus right now, wherever you are, whatever your situation. Even if you are unsure of who He is, or if He exists. You can reach out to Him at any time, and start a relationship with Him. You will find the most loving God and Friend in Him.
Thank you if you took the time to read this. Just know you are loved beyond your wildest imaginings. And the Person who loves you like that wants to show you, and for you to know Him.

while I agree with his statements
it is very basic information. Mo is
good information for people who have too much and think materialism equals the path to happiness. the indigenous people or poor people who make up most of the globe know this already .. and for those who do not have their basic needs met different measures are needed. yes people
    of all backgrounds are responsible
for their own pain and joy. I feel overall Mo is speaking from a place of privilege. it’s not wrong information its just not so revolutionary . happiness is relative and many times conditional to each person. however what I do enjoy of his talks is his current outlook on AI.
very informative. and I agree Ego and Arrogance is a very destructive force on the planet 🌎

I think shame does cut deeper because acts of shame goes against our inclinations, our natural disposition, our moral compass - goes against being human. Repeated acts of shame (promiscuity, sex outside marriage, drunkenness, lack of morals, not fulfilling duties/responsibilities as a family member, dishonesty, cheating etc - all socially acceptable and a norm) has significantly lowered human character to the point we don’t hold ourselves to account or to a higher standard and thus we see the breakdown of families and communities and society at large.

The concept that “life” pushes you in a certain direction with certain measurements as if it’s a designed test is far from truth in my opinion. What about the hundreds of people who commit suicide daily? Should we blame them for not tolerating these “precise measurements” and failing the test? Simply, these tests were beyond their limitations and they were completely broken. I believe Mo is so intelligent and articulate. I definitely agree on a lot of what he said, but I thought it’s better to make my comment on where I disagree with him since most of the comments are agreeing with his views. Great interview 😊

I really enjoyed listening to this interview. Some very interesting points mentioned.
    But I have one question.
Sure looking down to underprivileged people than use and simulating suffering is a good way of realising how blessed we are.
But when we keep doing it, after a point it becomes suffocating. Atleast for me.
For ex, Whenever I am sad that today I am hurt because my parents were very unreasonable towards me, then I think yes but I am thankful I have parents. There are so many abandoned children out there.
But does that mean my parents can keep doing it that way? And feeling hurt about that feels wrong. And that becomes more painful. So the cycle goes on.
    Does this make sense?

I've discovered that when I used to think happiness was knowledge thank happiness was not a choice I realized that my choice was that I was unhappy and I've decided that I was going to be unhappy and I decided that I was a victim so if I decided those things I could decide happiness As well that's when I knew happiness was as much a decision as being unhappy or being a victim the only difference is when you decide to be happy you're grateful I was grateful and I also decided that my ego was getting in the way of my happiness once I started caring about other people and really trying to help them and being part of their lives in a positive way my life improved exponentially

Lovely episode. I found very helpful the distinction between happiness (oxytocin - and I would say sobriety and serenity) and pleasure /excitement (dopamine - and I would say as Mo said we always want more of these things - leading to addiction).

Firstly, this guy’s verbal tick of “umm?” is annoying, condescending and patronising.
Secondly, his philosophy is poppycock. He taking stuff from everywhere and mashing it all up in to one pile of shite.
I did listen to the entire episode. Nonsense!

When my two favourite people come together and have a friendly chat based on curiosity and shared experiences, it is a whole symphony coming out of it. Especially at the end the discussion of masculine and feminin resonates so much with me, I cant even describe with words. Thank you guys.

in terms of your example about playing video games with your friends, I think that you have confused the joy of comradery and associated it with video games. Achieving things in real life with your best friends like building a business together or what not would in my opinion give you that same feeling. Therefore Ali I think its that feeling of comradery you're chasing and confusing it with videogames.

I don't think I've ever agreed more with anyone else before. I was listening to this podcast on my way to work a few days ago and I just kept saying YES . YES. YES. Happiness is the inner peace. And happiness is a choice. We don't always have control over events that are happening in our lives, but we always have control over how we choose to react to them / deal with them. Will be coming back to this one as a reminder. Thank you so much Mo & Ali xx

I'm at 35 mins listening to the wonderful breakdown of the happiness equation. I'd like to add: "Happiness is the difference between what is, and how you think things should be."

May Allah guide all of us to his path and only Allah can engineer happiness in to the person's heart, without Allah the heart will never find a peace. When we come close to Allah asking for his forgiveness it'll find a comfort.
