    I've had my 07 Civic hybrid for just over 11 years, it had around 35k miles on it when u purchased it, I've done all the oil changes, front brake pads twice (85k original, and again at 198k, along with new rotors). I did have o2 sensors replaced at around 191k, along with my original plugs by a shop back in January as I had a CEL showing, and in NYS it won't pass inspection. But that's about it. Love this car, and although it started rusting a couple years ago, I can't see any reason to get rid of it.

  • @karianimation
    @karianimation 3 года назад +3

    I did buy my 07 Civic Hybrid new. I still have it and it runs well. Way back in 2007 there were numerous incentives to get a hybrid in Canada. No provincial sales tax, Federal Sales tax rebate, Scrap-it program where you could get $1000-$2000 dollar rebate on a hybrid by trading in an older car that had been insured for the last 6 months or failed its emissions test.
    The original software was better than the updates which stole 15-20% of the fuel economy to extend battery life of the hybrid pack. You can get rebuilt packs for under $1000 and $2000 for new battery cell ones. The other nice thing is the Civic Hybrid holds the road like any Honda Civic, Its not a rickety underweight gocart like the early Prius and Insights.

    In fact the civic hybrid does have a starter motor that is only used when the battery and electric motor are unable to start the engine. Also, under some circumstances, the IMA system can keep the car's speed on electricity only. Proud owner of a 2009 civic hybrid almost 200k and still going strong.

    There was a class action lawsuit against Honda for this generation of Honda Civic Hybrids for a good reason. I owned one and would not recommend it. My MPG went from about 50 to the upper 30s as the battery degraded. Acceleration was terrible at the end (little battery power means little assist available). Everything from this point on is based upon what I read, Honda's design over stressed the hybrid battery, which caused them to start to fail. Since Honda did not want to replace the batteries, they reprogrammed the engine to save the batteries, which ruined the MPG.

    I just snagged a 2020 Insight and I love it. Lot of city driving where I am now and I get between 55 and 60 MPG. My previous car (2013 Dodge Dart) not only had tons of electrical issues but I was getting around 28 MPG. I haven't pushed it for a full tank yet but I'm averaging 300 miles on about 4.5 - 5 gallons of gas (total tank is 10.6 gallons IIRC). I still think Hybrids are under utilized overall as an option. There are more failure points but if the hybrid side of my Insight dies I can still drive it just on the regular combustion engine.
    I'm not a "car guy" but I do follow a lot of Scotty's Videos (I searched the channel for this one just today) because the videos on the channel are just packed with great info.

    Yep. I drive a 2006 Honda Civic hybrid ( looks just like the 2011) and I have had ZERO repairs in 15 years! Still on the original brake pads! For many of the reasons Scotty states- I went with the Civic Hybrid over the Prius. ( There are some other reasons as well). The main negative of the car for me is the road noise which is loud. But what to do-- a car that costs zero, gets 48 MPG and never leaves me stranded. About 165,000 miles on mine. Good to see this one at 235,000. I did buy mine new at an OTD price of 22,000- high back then. But by now that works out to $122/month over time, although paid off long ago.

      I have the same make and model car as you but the battery pack went out after only 6 years and got replaced by the dealer for free. Now the car only gets about 40 miles per gallon. So I think they put in a weaker battery pack. I can't complain too much because I bought it used for 3,000 and it's been running perfectly except for the replacement of an old worn out battery and a worn out tires. Didn't notice the road noise being that loud.

    Actually, it can run on electric only for brief periods of time. The motor is directly attached to the flywheel so it isn't very efficient because the motor has to push the rotating mass of the engine around too, but it can shut the valves and turn off fuel injection for brief periods of time with very low load.
    Usuaully when I come home from a long day driving this car, I go around 19 mph in my neighborhood and drive the last few hundred feet on battery only, until the engine has to take over again to get it up the sloped driveway where I live. xD

    Scotty, I really appreciate your wisdom and finding out these deals. The 2011 Honda Civic hybrid would be an excellent day driver car to work, especially at the price your customer paid for it. The biggest drawback is it is a sedan with very little cargo space. We only have one vehicle. My 2011 Prius has 40 CF of cargo space. I can put 2 ea 6 ft.folding tables in it with 12 folding chairs, or a 19 ft folded Little Giant ladder, or 2 x 8's 10 to 14 ft long strapped to my trailer hitch. We will probably always buy Prius's. They are the gold standard of hybrids.

    A simpler setup is always easier to work on and usually stronger. And lots of people can't afford a hybrid let alone an electric car so what you have shown is really practical for a lot of people.

    Hi Scotty, long time listener, first time caller. Off topic but a friend and I were talking about electrics & hybrids etc and it dawned on me, why don't they make a car like a train? Like some kind of engine hooked to a genny and the genny gives all the power? It's gotta be more efficient as locomotives can move a F ton of stuff. Keep up with the great topics!!

    I have to disagree, at least with my 2007 civic hybrid. It’s dangerously slow, the interior is falling apart. The hybrid batteries have problems so Honda made it so it doesn’t use the hybrid very much, which makes it slow and get just “ok” gas mileage.

    This is why I love my 89 Honda CRX HF! It runs 50 mpg in the city and 56mpg on highway! I have yet to run into any other car that can beat it! It's all stock D15b6! 275,000 miles and still running like a champ! That's why I take good care of it! Going to rebuild the engine when it gives up and give it to my 8 year old when he turns 16 and gets his license! He's going to have to learn to appreciate and respect cars before I give him the keys to this car! Maybe by 2030 I'll probably have to sell it because we're ALL going to have to have hybrids or electric cars by then! The only Toyota's I respect are from the 80's,90's and up to 2004! Cars and trucks! Good video Scotty!

      In my case...zero. Like Scotty says, this particular model, which I own, is built as an "assist." You must use a very thin oil (0W20). There has been some controversy over the Hybrid Battery Pack and a Honda software update used to cover up battery failures. I never took that update and had my battery pack replaced under warranty at no cost. Honda DID get in trouble though in a class action lawsuit and I got a check for $200 in some sort of settlement. If someone needed to get a replacement hybrid battery pack the key would be to visit with bumblebee batteries that builds better than OEM ones with 3 year warranties or remans with a one year warranty for about 1200-1500.

      I owned six different first generation Prius. Bought new 2001, traded to dealer for new 2002. Drove that 219k miles & at about 105k replaced a wheel bearing & a water pump. Found a 2002 still in warranty, bought it & sold mine. Repeated that three more times. No other repairs. Never had to replace brake pads due to regen braking! Always 40 to 45 mpg. Most reliable & economical cars I’ve had!
