Picasso once said, "Good artists copy. Great artists steal." This was one of Steve Jobs' favorite quotes. And Steve Jobs once said, "We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas." So wait a minute. Is it a good or a bad thing for entrepreneurs to steal great ideas? Is being a great copycat good or bad?

Patrick, as always a great episode. I agree with the sentiment, and it's actually something I advise to my clients as well. I am a creativity and innovation coach, and many small startup companies and entrepreneurs often feel a shame towards the concept of working with other people's ideas. They would rather try to prove that they are super original than be able to build on the progress someone else has made. The larger more established companies on the other hand have much less of a problem being a fast follower, waiting to see which innovations and ideas get traction and then copying those (as you mentioned with Samsung).
I copied the video about improving sales process and trained my sales in this today (via video conference, the virus means we cannot meet in person), they were impressed and found it a good use of time. Very helpful, thanks Patrick and Valuetainment.

My favorite part of blue ocean strategy was when the author said we should think about the product before, during and after. He gave an example of a movie theater that has a daycare attached so people dont have to stay at home with the kids or hire a babysitter. Thats brilliant.

In this topic, it's more about the execution rather than the preparation.
Both require workload, but the reality is whoever closes or executes well, i.e. who sells better really succeeds.
Brands are sold now, not just the product and not just the technology. The wrapping of the brand sells and is how people perceive the solution to their problem. And that's how people receive it, and that's what matters the most.
That's why the prep, or tech work is like admin now but knowing how to sell it really matters as the numbers come in.

Most of the electric things came from Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla. From wireless, bluetooth, infrared, remotes, electricity, even rengen for seeing bone tisue. He was the first person to mention energies like no other, that are present and we can use them, redirect them and in our reach but we cannot see them. Very good and informative video, i enjoy it!

Dr. J was playing the way he did before David Thomson. Dr. J played for years in the ABA when the dunk and layup were against the rules of the NBA. They finally merged after fighting each other until both were close to losing their shirt and that is when he left LI and moved to PA to play for the 76ers. I grew up not far from him but did not meet him until many years later on business when we learned that we had lived in the same town when he became wealthy and used the same realtor. NYers love and are proud of the Dr. because he like bill Russell were real gentlemen and smart in business.

I guess you read Charles Duhigg's "Smarter faster better", but if not I am sure you will find chapter 7 "Innovation, how idea brokers and creative desperion saved Disney's frozen" to be interesting. I would say this chapter greatly complements the points you made in your video.

I always remember the mouse and GUI technology that steve took from Xerox and then the famous duel between bill and steve which bill won like a king by saying "Well, Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it" sounds they thought that being copycats is their birth right (rightly so as you say in this video) :-D
what I think is that it's also about how you sell the idea as an original although we know it's not.People copy a lot of stuff but they don't know how to capitalise on the same thing.

From reading the book, although it may seem like eliminating, reducing, raising, and creating are the main points, I believe that the knowing what to raise and reduce is more important. Just because you reduce, eliminate, raise, and create something doesn't mean you're going to end up with a good idea. I think the book focuses more on successful business that were able to identify the "focus" of the business instead of everything. Do you think there is a limit to how much someone can copy and innovate?

copycats win because the rich can do whatever they want with almost zero repercussion.
It’s very simple. Get a large audience or distribution. Then when people come to you trying to improve their lives and your business with their little idea, you can steal and market it and they will likely feel so depressed that people can’t be trusted and feel so defeated that they’ll quit or won’t be able to afford action against you, especially if you’re big enough.
Your channel is awesome. Just awesome.
It's not really being a copy-cat: No one person invented the smart phone. People innovate, they improve, they adapt and little steps over time create results that can be considered progress. Some things can be copyrighted or patented but somethings can't, the constant improvement of everyone's ideas is what benefits the human race.

Love what your doing , truly one of the BEST channels for entrepreneurs. I was wondering about copyright infringement as far as using someone else's intellectual property to teach another and profiting from being the middle man but also giving the credit to the source outlined in the teaching lesson. I guess my question is is this illegal ? Better question Could I use Harvard business analytics in my teaching lesson and profit as the teacher but give Harvard the credit without passing money to Harvard. Hope this makes sense thank you !
