Hey Luke, I used a insect netting on my 2 rows of cabbage and cauliflower this spring. I lost every cauliflower and part of my cabbage last season. This year using the insect netting I was able to save and put up every one of my cauliflower and all but 1 of my cabbage. One thing i need to keep in mind for next year, to set my hoops out an extra foot and a half to accomidate the growth size. I hope this helps. Thank you for all the videos, I know how much work you put into creating all your content.
@@michellewelch6013 Hi Michelle, I bought mine from amazon. I bought the 10' x 50' size and I cut them down to 5' x 50' so I could cover my long rows. You want to look for the insect nets. You can use whatever you have to use for a hoop. I hope this helps.
Love watching your channel. Back when my family had a farming lot, we would divide the garden's ground area in sections needed by the amount of plants we chose to grow. This was mainly for the "sweet" soil lovers which was mainly the cabbage family. All the soil would be enriched with organic matter, but the "Tart" lovers also got peat to make them happy. The cabbage family got extra lime tilled in. We also had beautiful whole leaves with no insect damage. This was achieved with continual "dusting" of the entire plant and surrounding soil with lime. The plants loved it, while the insects hated it ! If the rain washed it away, we were always right out there making sure the girls always powdered their noses 😉
To beet or not to beet....that is the question 😂 I've had trouble the past few years, and this year I just said to myself...self....just let them go past the time that it says on the package for maturity date, and this year... I've actually got beets whooohooooo 😂❤
Our cabbage is growing and heading fine, however the outer leaves are so big we're barely able to keep them contained In the raised bed, We made Screen dome tops for them so the cabbage moths don't get to them and that has been working awesome, my question is, Is it beneficial to trim the outer leaves?
This was literally the video I needed. I just harvested 2 of the 6 cabbage heads I grew. They were the only 2 to form the smallest head. I am a new gardener and brassicas have been the plants I just can't seem to get to produce much of anything. I am determined though.
Thanks Luke! I looked last week about how to grow a giant cabbage and this was the most helpful. I’m growing giant Sapporo cabbages and have harvested several and I just put some of your early Wakefield cabbages in the ground for a fall crop.
I do keto and I’m growing a keto garden lol but man I just can’t grow brassicas! I’m hoping it’ll be easier in the fall without as many pests and heat because broccoli and cauliflower are the main veg that would actually make a dent in my diet that I wouldn’t have to buy at the store. I’m mainly growing things that I can eat like lettuce (spring harvest was great but haven’t been able to grow any in this heat) tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbage and coco zelle squash but I’m also growing some watermelon! I just hope I can grow the broccoli and cauliflower soon!
Thanks Luke, I needed this video info! I bought several of your cabbage, kale, and many other, seeds in March and planted the cabbage and kale using the close planting method in April. I have lots of cabbage leaves- all seeds germinated, not one formed head as yet while people are harvesting large heads. We have had lots of rain so I don’t think that watering is the problem. I also used row cover small tunnel which has helped with the cabbage moths, but the slugs are still finding their way in! I'm in zone 5 in Ottawa, Canada 🇨🇦 will try fertlizing with manure and grass clippings....
Feel very happy to see what you share. 💝💝💝💝Very interesting and very special to me. I was so amazed that I wanted to watch it until the end. Best wishes to you, may you always have health and happiness😍😍
I used bug netting for the first time this year and had no bug damage. I also had almost NO cabbage heads. Thought it was somehow the netting’s fault but maybe not. Appreciated the video.
With all the rain this year my cabbages keep getting infested with earwigs. I’m open to suggestions on how to deal with this. I want to keep things all natural in the garden so maybe give neem oil a go? I used on other plants years ago but not on my cabbages
I've never had problems with cabbage heading. But I do have problems with broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts forming nice heads. My question for you is about broccoli and cauliflower. Because they are both technically flower heads do they require more P and K?
Ok. Haven't watched yet... but the title on this video is hilarious! 😂 Watched! Very informative, Thank you. I'm planning on a fall planting I can grow well into winter 7b/8. Is there a variety that does better with August germination growing into the winter? I have Early Jersey Wakefield, Early Golden Acre, Golden Acre (not early) Red Acre, Savoy, Copenhagen, & Red Rock Mammoth.
Great videos, really helpful. I like that that short and to the point. I've been having trouble with broccoli heads. Will this help them too. Also radishes.
Great tips. In relation to tip 4, would the later heading varieties do better or worse for an area that grows them over the winter? Does the same beginner logic hold true?
I planted 2 kinds of cabbage seeds. One is lanky without a head. The other one turned into some kind of squash vine. I can't tell which kind since I've only had male flowers so far. I grew a cabbage fine last year.
Is this true for Brussels sprouts too? I have 5 plants that are not heading yet. The leaves are somewhat cupped but not forming balls yet. Will it take until fall or should they be already? I'm wondering if adding used coffee grounds will help.
@@gohabs9 LOL! I sure hope so. It adds Nitrogen. I did some more reading and it says to also add another source of Nitrogen to the coffee grounds such as grass clippings, manure, commercial fertilizer, or alfalfa (the latter three I don't have and can't buy until net month). I just mainly wanted to know if not having enough Nitrogen is why my Brussels Sprout plants aren't heading, or if it's just not time for them to form the sprouts yet since they're often grown as a cool weather vegetable. Last year my pepper production slowed down until the heat le up and then I got a bunch of fruit production in the Fall.
It's a type of bacteria that kills caterpillars but is safe for pets and humans, used by organic gardeners. The bugs eat the bacteria and it kills them.
Any Canadians in the comments? I live in Alberta, thinking about ordering some seeds, but not sure if duty or other taxes or charged on shipping? Anyone have any experience ordering from migardener website to canada?
Depends on the plant and the time of day. Cabbage and many other brassicas are a bit different because you can have water bounce off of leaves basically due to a wax like layer
I made the happy "mistake " of planting my cabbage with comfrey. My cabbages are very happy and healthy! Will definitely be doing this again!
you guys are NOT just a source of seeds... you are decades of gardening advice, passed along for all of us gardeners. THANK YOU!
Thanks Luke! First time cabbage grower here. I paused the video and ran out to give my cabbage some fish fertilizer.
I just want you to know I really appreciate these kind of videos.

Where do you get your hoop covers?

Great content Luke! Have you ever thought about doing a similar video with cauliflower?
I can cabbage just fine. Show me how to radish.
😅 I’m weak with the radish production , too.

Radishes are so hard for me and I can grow anything else amazing 😅
I literally let my beets go all season to get decent sizes...
Anyway, let it bean....
Thank you, Luke. 😊
Very useful information
Now I need one on Brussel sprouts!
thank you cabbages are marvelous, i used a bug net this year and it helped with white butterflies and also to prevent slugs
Thanks fir the info. I will be planting cabbage the first of August.
The outside leaves make great slug and snail havens
First year planting cabbages and something has devoured all of them! Hoping this video helps.
Same!
Probably slugs.
Slugs and Earwigs are really bad this year....they took out 80% of my brassicas.

New business idea. Professional cabbage cabbager.
I got one cabbage head forming and some seedlings coming up for a fall crop. Thanks for the information.
Brilliant video! Very helpful and informative ❤
Can I grow cabbage in a container? If so, what size is best and what size is the smallest I can use? Thank you.
I would like to know this answer as well. (For next year)
Just in time I needed this info. Thank you.

Hello what r the names of those fertilizers

What variety of cabbage are you growing? Those look huge!
What is your fertilizing schedule?

Not a cabbage but another brassica that is good for sowing right now, under lights is Brussel sprouts! 🌱

Broccoli is a tough one to get the timing right

Could these be the same reasons why my Romanesco didn't form heads?
Because you crowd your cabbages, how can you know whether or not the cup shape is due to it wanting water or due to the spacing?
Off subject. But my Kohlrabi is flowering way too soon. What should I do?

I definitely planted too close 😢 Everything grows tall, tall cabbage= not even close to head...
Rabbits are happy with it.

I'm in BC and have ordered a bunch of their seeds with no problems 👍
@@Wrightworth Thank you for answering!
All this time I've been taught to never water the leaves.

@bertarnoldo5199 I rushed out and watered the leaves and there's a very obvious difference.
