I grew up river fly fishing. As a little girl, I would sit and watch my grandfather in Newfoundland tie his own flies and a set of flies just for me! We would have our places at the river behind his house, and we would fish for hours, barely any talking, just focusing on the brown trout and they were huge!! Thank you for a great video!
Graeme, Even though all your content makes me want to hop a plane across the pond and join you in the land of my ancestors, I’ve really enjoyed watching your fly fishing content (in addition to your pen rod challenges). I’ve been sending them to my nephew and his mother, and it sounds like they can’t wait to give it a go. Largely due to your wonderful sense of humor. 🙂
love your videos Graham you inspired to get back in to fishing after 10years and after watching a few of your beginners guide videos i was pulling fish out all day long. thank you.
Thanks Graeme. Great upload once again. Probably one of the only fishing channels with consistent uploads, and of course, great content. Keep doing what you're doing TA
Good Video Graeme.... A lovely location and no doubt a classic English river, I would love to fish the Test for sure.. I just don't think it's worth the money, I guess rich folks get ripped off just as much as the poor. My local stream is free to fish and carries Wild Brown Trout to 6lb and is teaming with smaller fish too, with No traffic noise and beautiful countryside to walk through for hours on end, I hardly ever see anyone else fishing, that's probably why it's so good. Those Rainbow's did have some lovely marking's and almost looked like wildies but at the end of the day it's a managed environment and for me personally that's not what I want from our sport, especially at those prices Lol. Best wishes from Scotland.
Hi Graeme, after my gripe a couple of weeks ago I found this weeks video excellent. Cannot believe the price of the syndicate fishing. It is beyond belief that they can charge those prices. I am like a moth to a flame regarding Totally awesome fishing. Cannot resist watching it. You do a great job for an old geezer, keep up the good work.

However I have been happy it’s the plums Sierra and then okuma SLV reels as a huge improvement to my original marketplace gear used and abused. Hi Graeme great vid👍. I'm due to be fishing in the youth troutmasters competition but I've been absolutely terrible at fly fishing in the past few months. I've been blanking on catch and keep fisheries when others have been catching 4 or more in a session. Please can you advise me on what to do as I really want to have a chance at winning. Cheers🙂
Recently caught a lovely brown on a dry daddy at a river I fish for free at my grandads elderly home, I’ve learned a lot from your videos that has helped me land the big ones👌🏼
Holy Cow !...I thought it was me that was the only "oldie".how old are you ??? That's in the days when I had my own darkroom and was running off my own 10 x 8 glossy prints...trays full of chemicals.
TA Fishing ha ha, I’m 66 next week. Nobut a youngster in those days. You must be one of the few writers left from the 70s still on the go. Yep, I too had a dark room with not much of a clue but keen to fish and write. Still do a lot of the former (mainly fly fishing Yorkshire rivers) but none of the latter for 20 years. The old R&L kept me in a few £ to justify my fishing. I fished that Orvis length for grayling a few years ago, good memories of big trout.
Graeme! When can we get some more sea fishing videos? Love all the videos you put up, but really got into sea fishing as I'm now doing it for the army! Carry on the great videos, and as always! Tight lines! 👍
Its howling outside,I don't know anyone that has been out,and it seems a tough year for many species, nobody seems to know why...I too would love to be out at sea ,but " a man's gotta know his limitations"......
I started fishing about 55 years ago on the local trout stream. In those days the water board came mid summer with waders & rakes to clear the weed, they didn't do it for the benefit of anglers but to reduce the chance of flooding. I don't think they bother anymore.
Don’t worry about not being able to afford an Orvis Battenkill II rod& reel combo. Orvis has traditionally sold high end fly fishing equipment, and also the reality is fly fishermen are prone to marketing and advertising. It’s is a nice combo you were fishing with though. 😇
I've used a few mid price range telescopic landing nets. That gave up and died. I saw an orvis landing net and it was a bit more expensive than I had payed before. But, its the best buy. I think I will use it for years to come. Clips on and off my back (D ring) then I flick it over and it is rock solid for the rainbow trout I catch (up to 10lb). Really pleased with it. The rest of my kit is good quality and any replacement pieces I might buy, I will consider orvis again. Rods and reels am ok for at the moment. But, new line for next season. I will definitely consider orvis. Thanks Graeme, another good video. Tight Lines, Kev
No problems,I do all-round fishing, always have done ,so luckily I can turn my hand to most aspects of the sport . Good job the weather finally cleared or I would have been stuffed for filming and the fishing.
Used to love my fly fishing whether on reservoir lochs or fisheries here in Scotland. Always preferred a good fight with the wild brownies over any Rainbow the steelhead trout are good fighters as well right enough
Graham - I only have Orvis products so glad you see why now - You can catch on anything however its the technology that makes it all that much better and also all products are guaranteed for 25years no matter how they get damaged (even if you step on them) so it works out quite cheap in the long run.
If you watch my films over the years you know I am no tackle tart, but I try to be honest and it really was a pleasure to use the outfit. The reel drag was pure precision. And I'm not begging for one...I have had 4 Rainbows over 20lbs on my old outfits but for casting all day they are certainly easy on the elbow.
No fly fishing near me but the weed cutting is familiar. They cut it on the broads with machines that are supposed to gather it up but that feature rarely works. Lasy time it was so bad it was clogging boat motor intakes for weeks. Fishing was a dead loss.
Great job you did a fine job. Why not build your own high brand rod from a blank as I've done. You can end up saving as much as 60% if not better off the retail price. Love your videos mate!
Cheers for that, something I want to get into, always just fish across and down. Am I right in saying that the strip speed is more refined with a dry fly than a nymph because the dry can't go under?
This would be upstream nymph fishing ,not down and across . Dry fly have to be cast upstream and you take up the slack as it comes towards you. If you let it go downstream it will drag and go under. If anything there is no strip speed with dry fly ,most anglers like to let it run down without moving it. However,on a stillwater(lake) they definately will take a dry that has been twitched . I think the movement attracts their attention.
No,the cost of fuel and accommodation would be prohibitive...I did go shark fishing out of Scrabster once...took me 12 hours of driving and then I had a 3-day blank !!
I guess the olds ones died. !!!! or just fell in the river and floated out to sea !...actually good to see young people coming along. Many come out of the Sparsholt College
Thanks for the invite but I doubt I will get time before the season ends on the rivers as we are so far behind with the sea films due to both poor fishing, and the British weather.Maybe next spring when I am down that way after the sharks I could slot something in.
Yes, a quality rod makes a lot of difference to fly fishing, but you can use almost any old rod for coarse fishing because it can sit in a rest all day long.
