this was my first 5 comics. i was absolutely blown away by superpatriot and the quality of the art, character design and the paper. this was my first taste of image comics, i became a comic book lifer after this and an Image fan.
I met Dave back in mid 2000’s in Toronto and got some 100 Bullets autographs and picked up his art book . Last October in Baltimore I bought a cool pencil design of Acroyer from Micronauts and another art book! What diversity Dave keeps moving forward! One of the zillion things I love ❤️ about comics! Keep reading and making comix!👍😎🎯
I fucking LOVED this book. Dave was SO good at the blackspotting. The Stelfreeze nod is very astute. Stelfreeze is a sensei to a LOT of indie cats in my area (DFW) who make sure to show him portfolios at shows. Keith Giffen is one of my faves too. The Trencher books were so amazing! The inker/style switching was so great! But yeah, this is just an incredible book.
I know Cory Walker did Super Patriot before Invincible, but it’s been a long time since I looked at this and you can really see how much Johnson influenced Walker looking at this.
Great review. This was my favourite Image character back in the day. I remember reading this, then looking forward to each new issue of Freak Force. If I remember rightly, the Superpatriot versus Die Hard fight crossed over into another Youngblood title.
Yes! I loved this comic to death when I got it as a kid! Larsen was pretty much the only one at Image who had kickass art AND decent to great stories...
Oh man the amount of times I poured over this comic and it’s sequel. It still holds up so well and appealed to me so much more than other image books at the time. I’ve been a Dave Johnson fan ever since! Sure he’s heavily influenced by Otomo and Shirow at this time but he makes it his own with a fantastic design sense and Youngblood never looked better!
I remember from a drink and draw episode that Dave Johnson said he isn't a fan of Superpatriot design 🤔 and on a podcast Erik Larsen wasn't happy with his pages so he called him a said something like "what's going on? Have fun with those pages, man..." and then Dave comes back on track. Never understood if those pages where the ones we have on the mini series.
not sure if u guys are fan of later joe mad work but there are some Ultimates 3 Pencils version issue (either issue one or the trade) it has some of Joes best work and very fun to look at the pencils
Really enjoy your content. I'm always looking for a review of stuff I love and then curious about your reviews on things I was not exposed to before. Awesome channel!

I have all of the SuperPatriot miniseries custom-bound, sooooo good! Thanks for this spotlight!
For a sec there I thought the reflection in the coffee cup was a rasher of bacon XD bacon latte
I think the best part of this that went unmentioned was the letter section being called Stars and GRIPES. Ah-mazing.

I can remember the concept of SuperPatriot first coming from one of Larsen's last Amazing Spider Man issues.

I love this series, great example of the 90's. Larsen came out strong right out of the gate with his Image work.

Youngblood: Strikefile. Great Jae Lee art on the flip side, too
Dave Johnson draws some killer hot rods. He's real good at it.
LOVE Superpatriot. Dave Johnson and Kirkman blew my mind on both books serires.

Very underrated book

Anyway I love everything he made 😏 those books are still gold for me😁
One of the best things to come out of early image!
Comics' son of Kevin Nowlan - loved it on first release and I can't believe Erik never released it as a trade.

I have that issue pulled for a future episode! --Ed

Man, this looks like so much fun. I never got those, but whenever I see a Savage Dragon or related book at a discount bin, I'm picking those up.
