  • Carey Mulligan has once again filed one of the year’s most memorable and breathtaking performances, this time as the lead heroine in Emerald Fennell’s #PromisingYoungWoman. The Focus Features release-which follows Cassandra (Mulligan), a woman who in the aftermath of a friend’s assault seeks revenge-is now nominated for five Academy Awards, including best actress for Mulligan, best picture, and historically, best original screenplay and best director for Fennell. In this exclusive sit-down for Backstage members, Mulligan joined managing editor Benjamin Lindsay for a craft-and-career deep-dive on her roots as a performer, how she builds a character, her advice for others in the field, and more.

I wish she would have talked about how she studies to get her American accent down so eerily PERFECT.

Due to life circumstances, a lot of my acting is instinct/self taught, also. I do the same to memorize lines. I don't know if I was being a complete dork doing that. I was bullied by second team on a Dick Show where we need to memorize our lines on our sides once we land on set, and they'd make fun of me for writing them down.
