The possibility of more people losing trust in the world is encouraging. As Pastor Wolfmueller was saying, we are trust-driven creatures. Losing faith in worldly things may bring unbelievers to consider putting their faith in God.

I am a Baptist exploring Lutheranism and I cannot tell you how significant this conversation was for me. AI and transhumanism are things we should be concerned about and the evangelical world will just wander into it with smiles on their faces trying to figure out how to "baptize it into ministry." This is the first realistic conversation I've heard on the subject and I think you are right, sacramental theology is likely the answer. I say that as someone whose tradition doesn't have that nor do we really understand it I suspect. You've really given me a lot to think about and I am grateful to you both.

The Neuendorfs are family friends. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Pastor Neuendorf a few weeks ago while he was back in Michigan. We had a short discussion around how the LCMS was in a strong position coming up because of our doctrine. He mentioned this interview and I finally made time to watch it. This was a great interview. I've listened to it twice, now. I love the idea of True Hope coming only through Christ. And we can "touch" Christ through our sacramental theology. Wonderful! I agree with Pastor Neuendorf that we are almost "perfectly" set up to reach all the people who are more and more realizing this consequence of "nonsense" and/or "insanity" that is overwhelming our culture. So my first question is around this concept of "True Wisdom" that came out of your discussion. It seems to me that you may have coined a term -"True Wisdom"- that could differentiate itself from wisdom in general. Can either of you get more in depth on the concept of "True Wisdom"? I would love to get your perspective on that concept as I think that can help people like me describe an alternative to our "epistemological crisis" that has already begun. The second question is do either of you know anything about the ability of AI to pick up on tendencies. I have played around with ChatGTP and have seen a demonstration when text can be changed to sound like a different writer was telling the story (Hemingway v. Steinbeck, for example). I also saw Elon Musk state he quit using Tik Tok because he felt it was learning tendencies from him. I'm curious to see if you have any information on that and what you think the consequences of that may be. I'll end my saying a lot of these concepts have been on my mind and I so appreciated this conversation as you have given me words that explain what I was thinking in my head. I hope that makes sense. Much appreciated. Well done. I hope there will be a follow-up.

Thank you for sharing this conversation with us. It was very interesting. Something that I am finding useful next to the distinction between “knowledge” and “wisdom” is to talk about humans in terms of “thinking” and “understanding” and A.I. in terms of “computing”. So, to take one of Pastor James’s sentences, I would say it this way, “It’s not actually thinking, it’s just giving what its algorithms and the information it has been given to store in its databases cause it to compute as the most likely response.”
That helps me to keep in mind that there are fallible humans writing those algorithms and they have their own biases and imperfections that influence their work. (Makes me think of Hitchhiker’s Guide’s “The meaning of life, the universe, and everything is 42” error.)
God has created us humans with the ability to learn, know, and understand (to a limited human degree), a computer can do none of those things, but it can do what it’s named for, “compute”.

I hadn't ever thought about AI quite that way before. Kind of reminds me of the "head" in C.S. Lewis' book "That Hideous Strength." The "scientists" think they have created, understood, and to a degree can control an "intelligence" but in reality it is not at all what they think it is...

The 16:00 to 20:16 mark makes me think of Dan Simmons' "Hyperion Cantos" book series. It's an awesome sci-fi opera. In the books, there are these AIs called the TechnoCore that has a sect of AIs that want to create an AI god they call the Ultimate Intelligence. The books were published in the late 80s and early 90s, and it has a lot of overarching Christian themes. It's really interesting to see that Simmons basically saw this coming.

AI promises to multiply the ability if the internet to provide unparalleled access to knowledge. Yet without wisdom it is merely more confusion. These times make be grateful for the ordinary means of grace available in the sacraments, the preaching of the Word, and prayer. My first reaction is to proclaim the truth that the Christian has access to the physical, and through the means of grace, the spiritual. We walk by the Spirit.

Thank you for this interview. It was very thought provoking. The analogy to the Tower of Babel and the Flood were so good It made me sad because of where all this AI is leading but at the same time it makes God and Jesus and the Bible especially precious and also the witness of the Holy Spirit within you. If we ended up living in a world with fake knowledge and fake people (AI people) and real people. How would you know who or what was real? Truly we would have to walk by faith and not by sight. We would have to depend on the Holy Spirit of Jesus within us. He will say to us “21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21. “Jesus is the truth, the way, and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by Him.” John 14:6. GET A REAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS NOW. KEEP A REAL BIBLE, NOT JUST A DIGITAL BIBLE. Hide God’s Word in your heart!! AI=Artificial intelligence. Jesus gives Actual Intelligence. Jesus is truth. Jesus gives true wisdom.

Thank you SO much. I developed a deep fear that started in 2020 when I realized we could no longer trust our government or “the news” and AI has multiplied that fear exponentially. This video brings me hope and comfort and has strengthened my faith in the unchanging WORD of God. I would love to hear you both continue this conversation as I have just discovered it 7 months after it was originally posted. I’m gonna need more as it appears this tech will only continue to evolve and dominate our secular world. I wonder…have you used Chat GPT to start a sermon? Could you trust it to help and not hinder? Thank you.

I served as a professor of computer science at a Chicago area Christian college. My doctoral research was in Artificial Intelligence. What we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg of AI not the fulfillment of AI. AI is many faceted and very broad. The primary growth currently is centered on machine learning which is a managed manipulation of information. Another area of AI that may be even more concerning is the concept of neural networks. Our brains are natural neural networks that are trained through repetitive "lessons" completed as we experience life. The artificial neurons are daily being refined to the point that they will challenge our natural neurons. The artificial neural networks can be made more massive than our own neural networks (the brain and the nervous system). Machine learning makes the training of these neural networks far faster than our human training. When this happens AI will not only be dealing with images and text it will be dealing with the full fabric of creation just as we do. This is the point that the AI community calls the "Singularity". I thank God for the truth you shared at the start of your discussion. God is still in control and there is nothing AI can to to escape the bounds of the creation. God is God and He has deposed many gods before this.

Suppose I had the capability of generating every possible book (every possible combination of characters) of less that 800 pages or so, and put them in a database which I would call The Library of Babel. Therein I would have a script of Shakespeare's The Tempest (which would be, computationally, virtually infinitely expensive to search and retrieve from the library unless I already knew exactly what to look for, i.e. already had the script at hand, or had the foresight to pre-index that particular work when generating the library) and all the other valuable artifacts, and then also every possible combination of characters that would qualify as random junk, and everything in between. Now what? Should I feel astonished, or have the urge to draw some deep philosophical implications about the concept of that library? I can't. To me it's just a rather boring and trivial thought experiment.
