  • This is a tutorial for the course 'Field measurements and validation' for our MSc students on the Applied Remote Sensing course at ITC, the Faculty of Geo-information Science & Earth Observation at the University Twente, The Netherlands. It is about the processing of elemental chemical data for minerals and rocks. It is mainly about conversions between mole fractions (e.g., mineral formula), oxide weight percentages and elemental weight percentages. This is recorded at home with a slightly wonky green screen setup.

This is a very effective way of teaching and explaining the basics of geochemistry and its statistics. but it was just for one mineral Can you please explain the total geochemistry of major oxides and its mineralogical conversion?

Amazing, you have explained it so clear. As an Indonesian researcher, I can follow and understand some of the fundamental aspects in our measurements.

Absolutely amazing sir. Plz make few vedios about xrd, icpms and SEM data analysis. I will be very thankful to you. And also if you have time make a short vedio of how to interpret these data.

what if the numbers do not add up to 100??? im working on assignment for cr-spinel where the values add up to 99.86 and was wondering whats responsible or lacking for it to not equal 100..

This is a good question and for a lot of analysis the total will not be as close to 100, so it is important to address this for the best achievable accuracy. If your total is 99.86, then that is 100% of the values you are calculating, so you calculate each as a percentage of the 99.86. In this case, they will be extremely close to the amounts you already have. So if Ti was 30.00 out of 99.86, then it is 30.042% of 99.86. I hope this helps.

Thank you very much for this video. How can I calculate say Si/Al ratio from the XRF data particularly when the exact formulae of the sample is unknown?
