As a black girl is warms my heart to hear this type of conversation. Liking rock music was so alien to most of the people I was around and yet, being the only black person in a rock crowd, I also felt alien. Seeing paramore was the first rock concert where I felt not only belonging but I felt seen. I felt comfortable. I felt like I was home. It’s only the cherry on the cake that they happen to be my favourite band of all time. I’m so grateful to them for cultivating such a safe space for us all. I never had to shrink or avoid eye contact in their crowds. I could simply exist & it was so freeing. I love them so much! Amazing interview & let’s pray for a Sza collab pls ❤
paramore was just so important to me as a black mixed race kid. black people love paramore and its good to know that they love us right back
I agree 110% to everything this comment states, and stands for. Never felt uncomfortable or discouraged to be myself at their shows, and thank you for asking all the right questions! some of the best friends I have in my life were friendships formed as a Paramoere STANNN!
So well said. It makes me low key mad that we have to deal w automatically feeling like we gotta shrink or avoid eye contact in rock crowds to almost avoid possible confrontation and discomfort even if it’s in our heads bc of the lack of diversity and in not knowing how ppl are yt folks r gonna react when everyone should feel free to just enjoy the music; but I love that Paramore has created a safe space for everyone to exist by the way they represent themselves as a band and are welcoming. Also perplexing how liking rock as a Blk person is treated as if it’s alien and can create a complex when Blk folks spearheaded rock music . Representation truly matters in that sense which is why I get so happy when I see ppl like Willow Smith or Lenny Kravitz doing their thing bc it’s a reminder that even tho the genre has become whitewashed in the mainstream at least that Blk folks can do it too and do it well. Prince too!
I feel you on this because my family and the community I grew up around thought I was trying to be white and it was not that at all, I just was being me the girl that loves rocking out and hip hop.
Absolutely 💯
Hayley and SZA on a track together would 100% make my entire life, no lie
I'm sayin!! 😊🎉
Hayley's even talked about it before.
Haley needs to jump on a remix to F2F!
Yesssss!!! Do it!
Same. I think Hayley would have been a really good feature on SOS
Plz Lord.
To be interviewing *Hayley Williams* on a (relatively small)(for now!) podcast named about *Paramore* , the interviewer was EXTREMELY composed! She conducted a great convo, awesome questions , so well done. I wish this shit was an hour + ! 👏🏽👏🏽
Congrats on getting Hayley. That's incredible
Met Hayley a couple months ago at the mall. Such a down to earth and dope individual. She brought up SZA immediately. You can tell she really admires her.
What mall do I need to be hanging out at to accidentally meet Hayley lol
You could tell that Hayley walked the walk.. she was so comfortable talking about her proximity to blackness.
Haley’s always come across emotionally intelligent and empathetic and an ally. Love her. Thank you for this ep!! Loved the conversation x
This is so cool!!! I’m so happy the band realizes their impact on the black community 😊
I finally got to see Paramore for the first time this summer and it was everything I needed❤️ middle school me was SOBBING
SAMEEE
Adult me is SOBBING FOR YOU 🥹💓
Love to see it!
When I say SAME!!!
BLACK PEOPLE LOVE PARAMORE&HAYLEY WILLIAM,I met CAROLYN SHE BEAUTY QUEEN OF 1955 IN MISSISSIPI,as weLL as SELENAQUINTANILLA ,both who've done lots to HELP me before they passed away =HAPPY FALL SEASON.
your composure in front of the hayley williams was magnificent, im sure it must have been hard to repress your inner fangirl 😂 id love a black people love kpop episode if you haven't done one already!
Ugh kpop is so fucking problematic! Full of racists.
Not to mention they honestly suck and refuse to give credit to who they TRY to mimic.
I’m only five minutes in and already crying. As a black girl who grew up with Paramore like through middle school on, to hear Hayley say that seeing a diverse crowd brought her joy means everything. Like to hear that Hayley actively welcomes black fans and wants us to partake in the celebration of their music that’s really beautiful. There have been so many artists that I’ve loved growing up only to find out that they actively are anti-black which has been so hurtful so this is just kind of healing lol.
Great job! I've been a black Paramore fan for 15 years and you managed to ask Hayley questions that I've never heard before.
I'm 57 years old. Lifelong rock and metal fan. It was pretty lonesome being one of the few Black kids who liked Van Halen and Journey back in the day. We've always been in the scene but it was really hard connecting before the internet, lol. Both of my nieces are Paramore fans and they both cite me as their inspiration. I've been to a lot of concerts and though there aren't a lot of Black folks in the audience, we're there and I've never had any issues save one time in the OC (but that's because it's the OC, lol). It's cool that Hayley is being appreciative and open.
I wish this was longer. Loved hearing Hayley talking about #1 Stunna 😂
I gotta listen to that!!!
Yessss!
As a longtime Paramore fan and coincidentally a Cash Money Dollaraire myself, I always knew Hayley was a boss stuntin' baddie like Evel Knievel.
Hayley Williams stan!!! This woman gets it! Appreciation of Black people & music without being a vulture. 🫶🏾💯💪🏾
I just discovered this podcast and oh my god this is something preteen and teenage me would have NEEDED as someone that felt too “black” for the white kids and too “white” for the black kids. I’m 25 now and feel more confident in my interests but this podcast is everything. Gonna go back and listen to more episodes ❤️
I been a fan of Paramore since I was 16, and now at 31, I still am. As a black teenager living in Belgium, I always felt like the only black person in the whole country who listened to Paramore. It's a great feeling to finally discover people who love them too!
Absolutely LOVED this interview!!!! I think that Hayley and Paramore do a really great and honest job of citing and appreciating the influences of Black music in their music and creating inclusive and diverse concert experiences, I think that Paramore’s work is genius and it’s also so clear that Hayley and her band actively grapple with and reflect on issues of race and culture in our society, which is never an easy path for anyone, so appreciate Hayley’s openness. So exciting that you had the opportunity to interview Hayley and loved hearing that Spotify made this connection, this is my first time hearing about this podcast, subscribing!!!
She has always been invited to the bbq. Thank you for doing this, I have loved her since I was 11 and I'm 25 now, like her and Rihanna were the only reason why I dyed my hair red when I was younger. I finally got to see them live last year outside and I hadn't felt so happy, alive and nostalgic. They put on the best show it was invigorating, Hayley is the best. They are just so groovy that's why we love them. Hayley and Sza together would be a perfect alternative blend.
Stop it. We not inviting anybody else to the bbq.
I wish Black people would stop with the BBQ invitation foolishness. Just be a fan and keep it pushing.
You are an amazing interviewer ! I would absolutely LOVE a ParamorexWillow collab, Willow is still learning herself as an artist and perfecting her sound and I think Paramore could help her so much and also allow Paramore with exploring that bridge between rock and groovey music.
I disagree; Willow found herself sonically.
@@adamdevereaux2713right.
@@adamdevereaux2713 I certainly agree, with Coping Mechanisms I believe she perfected her sound. But in one of her interviews she had said herself she’s still learning herself as an artist and looks up to so many musicians that have helped her discover her skills even more. Things that never occurred to her come natural to her now bc of shadowing and working with other musicians.
Even Hayley Williams had said as a musician yours always learning more and perfecting your craft. There’s an ever growing supply of things to learn in music.
I love that this exists...the 10th grade Blerd in me who still screams RIOT lyrics is crying ! lmao thank you guys. Paramore is so special to all of us.
Not sure how you pulled this off but your amazing for it.
I remember when people would shun you for being Black and listening to “non black” music and now to see how embraced it is is awesome. Cause the real ones have always listened to rock and Paramore always been on that list so thank you for this. Also, a Sza and Lil Wayne feature would be insane
Same thing for latinos too, at least some circles.
This Hayley lady seems really cool. She should start a band! It sounds like black people would really love them 😂
In all seriousness, HOLY SHIT. You have peaked and I’m so happy for you. I love how *this* is the episode I discover your podcast through
I know Hayley and SZA would go crazy, but Paramore and THUNDERCAT????????? OMFG????? YES!!!!!!!!!
YEEEESSSSSSSSSSS omg it wasnt long enough!!! Best Hayley interview ever I’m in tears!! 😭😭❤️❤️❤️ we need all the sza x hayley songs we can get!
A sza and hayley EP or Album even 😅
I'm so happy and thankful for this podcast and all the things you will accomplish Sequoia. This interview was everything. Wish it was longer but grateful for it.
Shaking crying screaming throwing up in the best way possible
for me, what i loved most was that she valued not centering herself or speaking over the black community. i think it really shows how deeply she commits to true allyship.
I love this so much! I am a black man who grew up in the hood in new york city, raised listening to r&b, hip hop, soul, but somehow gravitated to punk, pop punk/rock, and other alternative genres of music in my teen years. Paramore soon became my favorite band and is still. I connected to the music on a special/unique level. Their first three albums were the soundtrack to a lot of strife growing up. Brand New Eyes is one of the best albums I've ever heard, especially in songwriting. They will always have a special place in my heart and their music brings back so much nostalgia. So yes, black paramore fans have been here since the beginning.
Sequoia!! This is the one! Omg, I’m so proud of you! This was an amazing interview. I’m so glad you got an interview with the podcast namesake. I usually listen on Spotify, but had to hope on YT for this one. Continued blessings friend!!! 🎉🎉
What a great idea for a podcast! 👏🏽 Representing the underrepresented interests of Black ppl which makes it better for Blk young adults and especially Blk kids growing up to not feel so damn isolated or “weird” for their interests just bc it challenges the monolithic perception of the community that so many of our own ppl can even perpetuate! These kinds of representations can make people more comfortable to be in certain environments and discussions and I love that 💛💛
The episode we all NEEDED! This was amazing Sequoia! And we need a SZA×Haley collab ASAP 🙏🏾
that was so great! such a genuine interview! this is how I want to learn about paramore. Though the fans!
You can tell how comfortable non-black people are with black people by how they say “black” and I love that it wasn’t awkward for her.
Paramore, one of my favorite bands since their self titled album. Great musicians.Hayley has an incredible voice.
I’m glad RUclips recommended this video. No black person I know listens to Paramore and I have loved them since high school ❤ I have to get to a show! I’ll going to subscribe to the podcast right now!
Im mixed race. Been a Paramore fan since 06
I'm so fucking stoked for you that you got to interview Ms. Williams herself! And I'm so stoked for us fans of color to have such an incredible ally in her. Not just understanding that we love her but being proud that she and her band have created an environment that makes us feel seen and safe and loved and ready to fucking dance lmao. Congrats and much love!
Found out about Paramore from playing Misery Business on Guitar Hero back in college, and been rocking with them ever since. It was me and 1 other black girl who openly rocked with them, other than that, we were outcasts amongst our peers driving down the block singing Hallelujah lol. For her it was something new, for me I had been into more than just hip-hop and R&B my whole life so it was no biggie. All that said, I'm glad more black people are branching out into other genres.
Her answers just made fall even more in love with her ♥️ such a sweetheart.
You know what's crazy? A couple days ago I remembered this day in high school where I used a Coldplay & The Fray song for a PowerPoint I had to do. My homegirl started clowning me talking bout why you are using white music in your presentation. I was like, girl music has no color, and my teacher who was a white woman, was like omg Annie what did you just say? I repeated it and she got all excited and posted it on her Twitter she told me she was giving me extra credit just because of my song selections😂 mind you she had never heard either one of the songs before. That just goes to show you not everyone listens to the same thing. Everyone is different, and that's why I love music so much. Glad other black people enjoy "white" music just as much as me.
What's sad is that early Rock n Roll was dominated by black artists (Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Fats Domino, Arthur Crudup one of Elvis idols) but the black musicians were gradually pushed out as Rock became ever more racially and culturally gentrified. The fact that Rock music, with it's roots directly tied to African American blues, is now associated with white culture is a nothing short of cultural appropriation.
@@GPanda110 Agreed ! SAY IT LOUDER FOR THEM PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
hearing hayley talk about cash money was SURREAL i love it
I love Paramore and I'm a 52 year old Black male.
Great interview, seemed like a genuine conversation. Now I'm not black but I am Mexican American and one thing I have always loved about going to Paramore shows (since '09) was that I never felt out of place. I can name other bands I love that I would go to concerts for and feel like oh crap I definitely don't belong but again not at Paramore shows, ever. I would always just sing along and have a great time with whoever was around me at the show.
Garden by SZA is my fav too! She got great taste lol the melodies at the beginning are so beautiful and make u feel like you’re on a cloud I loved seeing Hayley’s cover when it came out u can tell she rlly loved it
New subscriber, I've loved Paramore since I was middle school teen, so awesome you got to interview Hayley, great interview, Hayley and the guys always been invited to the cookout 🤣
As a ride or die Paramore fan, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this 😭🙌🏽
I’ve been a fan since 2005, and I’ve never really thought about the fact that there’s a controversy (?) about black people liking Paramore. And I’ve never felt like it was wrong for me to like them or whatever. I guess maybe it’s different for me, I’m brown and I grew up in Scandinavia. But anyway, loved this episode! Hayley is just amazing.
It's within the community where black people are bullied for liking things outside of the culture
Black woman here. I have been a fan of Paramore since I was a teenager. I didn't care for rock or alternative music before then, and honestly, still don't. But when I discovered Paramore back in '08, I knew Hayley Williams was THAT GIRL! I was made fun of for blasting Paramore by my black friends back then, but now we ALL love Paramore and Hayley Williams. I truly love this band.
Amazing amazing job~ been a paramore fan since 2005 and this is the first time I’ve gotten to see H talk openly about culture in this way! Thank you!!!
Omgggg love this for you Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉 she’s so sweet! Yasss black folks loveee Paramore they’re so different and authentically unique. We grew up on them so to see them still doing great is amazing 🥺
I'm not sure how frequently you come across comments 👑, but I've had this video saved in my 'Watch Later' playlist for a few days because it has definitely piqued my interest. (I'm watching it now), and I have a suggestion, if feasible: I’m not sure how often you have guests on, having at least two microphone stands could help create a more relaxed atmosphere for future guests. This can aid in better blood flow to their arms and allow them to focus more on engaging in dialogue with you. Your podcast is blossoming beautifully, and I wholeheartedly wish you continued success and all the best. 🙏🏽
actually got her on thats insane !!!!
i would DIE for a SZA collab! this was a great interview, its so cool that you got hayley on!!!!
Absolutely love Hayley Williams, Paramore definitely helped me express myself growing up as a black girl and each album coincides with my life at different stages as a woman. Proud to say that my first ever concert was Paramore!
she is so incredible with her platform & you can just see how much she cares about being a voice to uplift. such a great interview 🩷
My first concert was Paramore. I was 14 and my aunt took me. She also bought me my first beer, which i didnt like lol. But Hayley was moving all over. At one point, she climbed on one of the giant speakers lol she took her shirt off and was in joggers and a sports bra. It's one of my top 3 concerts I've ever been to
Bruh, why does Hayley liking New Jack Swing not surprise me at all. I love this interview. Hope she gets that SZA collab too.
LET’S GOOOOOO
I'm a black guy who loves rap and classic rock and absolutely agree with loving Paramore and she seems cool always liked her.
This was great! You did an amazing job! I would’ve watched for an hour if it had been that long.
I am so happy that you got this full circle moment Sequoia.
i was smiling the whole way through this video :))
Such a relaxing episode. Hayley is so calming
Subscribed. I definitely am a black girl who LOVES paramore!! And have for YEARS
Friend, this was a gift. Thank you for this 🥰🥰🥰 One of the best paramore interviews.
As well as one of the fastest follows.
Teenage me healed a little bit watching this. Thanks so much. Subscribed
You did so good! Such good questions and you looked so comfortable and you made her comfortable, such a talent. ❤
This is amazing, Sequoia!!! You did that!!!
Hayley’s such a sweetheart, been a fan since 2007 and she’s also one of my girl crushes!
I randomly came across your podcast after seeing a Paramore concert. I love the interview and learn a lot about Hayley. Will definitely subscribe. You have a wonderfully unique take.
Guys, I have some TEA. So tell me why the guitarist from Cute Is What We Aim For was talking sht about Hayley and was calling her a "racist" all because he got mad that Paramore ended up outshine them! Lol HE IS BITTER
Hayley if you want 'groovier' suggestions... Masego, Anime, Daniel Ceasar, Frank Ocean. And those are just the guys
im obsessed, you've got a warmth in your presence and make the conversation feel so organic. also you're gonna manifest that sza collab because how can she put it off now?? 💕 you've got a new fan. you're the best
SZA NEED TO LOOK AT HER DAMN PHONE
This made my day! Always loved Paramore & Hayley growing up, still do ❤
Thank you Spotify! This was an amazing and refreshing interview ☺️ shoutout from ya mexicana sis 💓
thank you for asking such insightful questions and I'm so happy you got to interview her! it's my first time checking out the podcast and I can't wait to hear more. idk why, but the idea of young Hayley looking at Lil Wayne and thinking "we're both young small kids from the south, and he made it!" is the most heartwarming thing hahaha
How did you maintain your composure my goddddd this is great
So good!!! Always loved her since day one.. crush and misery business days!! You can tell she’s authentic
I ant to see WILLOW and Hayley do a song together. That is my dream!!
yessss girl, from the title alone yesss we doooo! love Hayley 💛 love paramore 💛
Incredible. I haven’t watched the interview yet but I can already tell you that I have a lot of love for you and this podcast. It is something I didn’t even know I needed. And I love Hayley even more now for supporting your podcast ‼️❤️
I remember going to paramore age 16 in Liverpool Uk in 2010 B.o.B supported (Airplanes had just been released and it was climbing the UK Charts so fast) them it was amazing but I always made the joke that me and B.o.B were the only black people there which was true 😂 but growing up I always felt like weird because I liked paramore and they were rock so they were seen as a guilty pleasure because R&B is my favourite genre so that was the “norm” because I am black but I’m so made up now 13 years later they’ve got so many black fans! Not just me and B.o.B 😂
How does this not have more views!!!, this was an incredible interview!!
A Christian rock album would HIT from paramore
Black fans white fans ffs, your playing their game. We are all one!
Fantastic interview! I’m sure you’re the ONLY one that could have created space for her to share the way she did. Well done!
THANK YOU FOR CREATING THIS SPACE FOR US!!!
Hayley singing at a black church 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹💖💖💖💖💖 her mentioning Whitney 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹😂😂😂😂 I NEED TOUR DATES
To this day! Paramore show the best concert I’ve been to, the energy is so positive and uplifting. So happy for you to get this interview.
I wish you had talked about her song with bob "airplanes"
THIS IS SO SICK AHHH !!! THE FINAL BOSS
SZA + Paramore would take me outttttttttt 🤯😫
I could’ve listened to you both have a conversation for three hours ❤
As really cool as it is to see that she appreciates black culture, the coolest part is that it's only the culture part that she cared about. I don't think things like race ever really mattered to her, the way it seems to matter to much of the world, including so called "black people". She always saw and treated ppl on an individual, case by case basis.
Fantastic questions! We really got to learn more about a side of Hayley that we don’t see. She seems like such a cool and down to earth individual. Congratulations on this big moment in your podcast ❤
My first ever concert was a Paramore concert in high school!!! Still remember it like it was yesterday 💛
This was a wonderful interview ♥♥♥ Thanks and congratulations!!
