My goodness, why the hate on Jess, people? Disagree by all means, but come on ... Are all of the haters possessed by Morgoth? Now, having just been fair minded and just, may I want the record to show that my opinion of the RoP is that it is abysmal. It may cost a lot, but it's cheap. No way you like the first two episodes and cried there is no story line. Nothing makes sense and Galadriel swam an ocean and lived she always looks pissed off. Every book where she is mentioned she displays joy and beauty, or sorrowful beauty not pissed off and distrust. There is no real dialog, and nothing is Tolkien, but I guess that explains name of part time Hobbit you missed it. The Cartoon the Hobbit that came out in the 70s I think was better than the Prime show which was very disappointing. I have read all Tolkien's books including unfinished tales multiple times and read them to me daughter. I am sorry I happened across your review. Maybe you should read more Tolkien then make another go of it.

I didn't really like the first episode of the first season. But as the show went on I started to enjoy it. Yes, it has problems but it didn't stop me from watching and enjoying it.
I first watch Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings" in 1987. So for me that will always be Tolkien. More so than Peter Jackson. Yes, I enjoyed Peter Jackson's films too.

@@cally77777 As I stated before, I watched countless hours of analysts reviews and frame-by-frame stills (i.e. Shadversity's breakdowns on the messy sword fighting), and heard enough of the dialog / ammeter writing ("Give the me meat and give it to me raw", and "Why does a rock not float and a boat does", or some BS), to know it was not worth my time (but the reviews were entertaining. Check out Nerdorotic/FNT/KnightsWatch). So, yes, I can have my opinion because 1) I did my homework and 2) If you haven't noticed, a lot of franchises have been ruined by the far-left ideology, and Tolkien, unfortunately, did not escape the same fate as Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, and my much-beloved Disney that is currently being burned to the ground, simply because activism has to be put over just having an entertaining story, and 3) While I'm not in the front lines of the current culture war I'm not going to sit idly by and keep quiet about Tolkien being given the middle finger, from fear of offending people online who are offended by everything under the sun. A lot of corporations push the DEI stuff to make them "look good" and hide the illegal practices they're doing *cough* Disney *cough*. I'm very aware of what's going on, and 4) Galadriel is 1000s of years old, giving her a character arc is completely stupid.

The introduction of the halfling characters is one of the first ones that got me. Say what you will about their lore relevancy, but they reminded me of some of my favorite parts of both Hobbits and my own childhood, and really woke up a sense of wonder in me. Another moment was the reveal of Moria. It was a very striking design, and I've always struggled to picture it, so seeing it was very much "Oh wow! That's what it looks like!

@@Jess_of_the_Shire You are the town crier. 😅
It sounds like you focused on the form. You yourself even hinted at the great anticipation potential after a long hiatus of the franchise, so I can understand that aspect, but there is so much more to discover. I always find it helpful to have many different viewpoints and understanding that they can all provide insight, and people who for example are very enlightened about the societal context of the times see that kind of big picture, see a lot of stuff that can be a burden if treated with hostility but a boon if embraced as further detailing the full picture. (Remember that evil works through deception, through imitation of something true. 😉) Especially people who are not easy to fool are having a very hard time in contrast to the mainstream. But they are the ones working for standards to rise. To use an analogy, they are the kind of people who don't just judge food quality by taste but examine the chemistry in a lab to look for pathogens. To them the 'hidden forces at work' are not hidden at all; quite the opposite.
Evil would never be able to set roots if it didn't present itself very appealing. (I am reminded of a scene from Revolver right now. Excellent movie!)

I personally deeply, deeply disliked the show, for a whole ton of reasons that would take too long to explain here (but I did write an in-depth episode by episode review about it).
There were definitely some things that I liked about it, such as the music and cinematography, and a few of the plotlines were cool. Particularly I enjoyed the Dwarves plotline (Disa and Durin had such a lovely relationship, and I thought it was such a nuanced detail that Elrond just sort of...ghosted Durin for twenty years because to an Elf (or rather Half-Elf), that isn't such a long time), and I also liked the Southlands plotline (I loved the family dynamic of Arondir, Bronwyn, and Theo, which was developed very satisfyingly). Personally Adar was my favorite character, and I'm very sad that Joseph Mawle will be leaving the show. I loved that the actual geography of Middle-Earth was expanded upon, and every city and landscape was utterly beautiful (especially Numenor and Khazad-Dum). I definitely got the feeling that this was Middle-Earth in its prime, especially compared to the sort of fading glory that was in the Third Age.
But that was about all I liked, and the rest I deeply detested. Galadriel was a disrespectful, haughty, horrid person who thought herself better than EVERYONE and bullied her way through at every turn, and I wanted to introduce her head to a brick wall every single time she opened her mouth. The reveal of Halbrand as Sauron was so bad it made me cry. Celebrimbor was deeply disrespected as a character, and that hit me really hard since I love The Silmarillion and the Feanorians in particular. The mithril plotline was just so incredibly ridiculous, as was the fact that the ending felt incredibly rushed. I mean, the show is based on the forging of the Rings of Power, and that event happened in the last forty-five minutes of the last episode.
I really wish that the show's storyline had remained accurate to the canon, as that story on its own is incredibly rich and heartbreaking, and would have been utterly amazing to see on screen.
I think it's great that you're able to appreciate the good parts of it, and really experience the magic this show does have! I also totally get that we might have different opinions, I just wanted to share mine.
I really love your content, you have such a unique channel and way of analyzing Tolkien's works, and you just seem like a truly real person who cares about life and branches out into different hobbies and interpretations, and that truly sets you apart from the content mill that is youtube today!
anyways I know this video is a million years old, I just watched your video about the costuming of Rings of Power and highly enjoyed it (although we do have a bit of a differing opinion on the Elves' hair being cut), and that led me to this one!

You put words to some things that bothered me about it that I didn’t consciously recognize until now. I want to give the show a little more time before I form an opinion, but I will say that Galadriel and Elrond don’t really feel like Galadriel and Elrond to me at all. They might be interesting in their own right, but I kind of wish the creators had just started with new characters from scratch rather than pulling names from the original LoTR.

    • @cally77777
      @cally77777 6 месяцев назад

In the case of Elrond not feeling like Elrond, I would suggest very strongly that is because of the influence of Peter Jackson's films. Elrond in ROP is closer to the 'kind as summer' character in Tolkien's books, than Hugo Weaving's rather dour (though interesting) portrayal.
Galadriel I will at least concede is a bit out there, but she isn't entirely removed from the book character, who was seen as a perilous sorceress by some, and did feel the temptation of the Ring. Further some of her close kin amongst the First Age elves were of a much more fiery disposition, and she certainly had much cause for angst after the wars against Morgoth. She is a possible version of Galadriel that could have come to be.

Even by most filmmaking aspects it's a lack-luster piece. Lots of dodgy dialogue, awkward camera framing, and at times some very unfortunate acting. The mixed race cast wasn't an issue for me. The black female dwarf was actually one of my favourite characters, even if she had nothing to do with Tolkein.

Quite a lot of different actually. Stories about MLK and Shaka Zulu almost always involve race as we understand it so making details like skin tone accurate is relevant. In Tolkien's world, race has nothing to do with skin tone since to him races were things like men, elves, dwarves and hobbits. Since it is apparent what race every character is in ROP, there are no issues here.
As to being influenced by Norse mythology, you might be interested to know that Norse dwarves are actually dark elves, which means, yes, they have dark skin tone. But fear not,it turns out that Sophie Nomvete who plays Disa is in fact a true Aryan, which is to say she is of Iranian descent. Feel better?

Whats next, all the "Elves" in Rivendel going to have afros and playing hip-hop while twerking? I mean "ItS JuSt FantAsY" right? It's just an "Adaption" right. So why not?
Also do you have any sources that described Dwarves/Dark Elves as Dark skinned? As someone else pointed out, Dark is usually a reference to evil in this context, not skin color...... People that live underground would theoretically be extremely PALE skinned from lack of sunlight, not dark
And since you don't like his Shaka Zulu example, let me give you a better one. We don't want to see Asian Fantasy movies where the Ancient Kung-Fu master appears, and he's a blue-eyed White guy with spiky Blonde hair. It would be RIDICULOUS, and NO ONE would be okay with it. But when the exact same thing is done to European Cultural works, you all support it and come up with the most elaborate mental gymanstics to justify it.
Also "Aryans" are not "Iranian", not sure what twisted cultural Marxist told you that lie. Aryans were a group of Indo-Europeans who were originally from the Russian Steppe/Ukraine and who migrated to Northern India. Nothing AT ALL to do with Iranians. Similarly, Dökk also means dark. In contrast, the other kind of elf in Norse mythology is Ljósálfar or light elves. Neither the dark elves nor the light elves were considered innately evil in Norse mythology.

So if Tolkien himself was concerned enough to write about his misgivings, given he was writing a mythos for the English, why would anyone presume they know better?
Tolkien didn’t want his titular characters represented by southern Europeans.
      But somehow subsaharan is fine?
Tolkien clearly defines the Rohirrim as fair and blonde haired. The Numenoreans fair and darker of hair.
If it wasn’t important to Tolkien, he wouldn’t have bothered describing racial characteristics.
Tolkien describes races of men, call them what you will, as well as the Noldor, Sindar, and sylvan elves, as well as the different ‘races’ of hobbits differently using characteristics of race.
It’s all in there. You can’t discount what Tolkien has written by presuming that races only concerned men, elves, dwarves and hobbits.
To somehow make the leap that he was only concerned with race as it applied to elves and men and so forth just by virtue of their existence. It’s a non sequitur.
How does having a broader group of races preclude a smaller subset of races?
We have the Easterlings and the Haradrim.
Who were overtly different in racial characteristics which Tolkien described.
That was relevant to the story. Very relevant, because the different races of men were how the cultural divides existed.
      That’s how cultural mythos work.
So no, Tolkien makes these distinctions of his own volition.
As for the dark elves. Their skin was as ‘pitch’.
But if you imagine them to have features of subsaharan Africans then that’s quite a reach.

Just a shame she just stopped talking about it, I mean if she said "man that sucked and it's fan fiction" then at least people would feel like they were on the same page.

I dont think it's as good as it could have been, definitely has some issues which to be fair it's a TV show so that could just be season 1 teething issues, but I enjoyed it overall...die hard fans could probably be a bit less irritable and enjoy it on the same sort of level as something like Shadow of Mordor/War, they aren't half as hated, people speak generally more fondly of them, if you can bring yourself to enjoy a game that features Shelob as a big tiddy goth chick, then your issues with Rings of Power are probably not entirely lore related...

It's awful, pseudo intellectually contrive dialogues and cringe inducing dialogue. Looks great, but the pacing is off, the tone is off and the acting is a bit dodgy. I'll still tune in to keep watching but it's not giving me good vibes at the moment.

I could not get into it. Loved PJ’s original series but his second series, not sure how to describe it, devolved like Star Wars devolved. Rings of Power began at what I felt was a very slow pace and I could not bond with the main characters so I never completed it. I have to admit, I never read the Silmarrilian (sp). But read The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings over several summers as a teenager. Tolkien was a great writer.

I didn't cry but I think the producers shouldn't have front-loaded things the way they did and rather simply let things develop gradually. The rushing seems to me mostly about money, getting as much story in as possible. It's challenging enough to keep even a vague timeline together for events in the Second Age, so I sympathise with the struggle to make it work. The dialogue is pretty rubbish, no question. I suppose we'll see how Season 2 turns out.

I have not and will not, watch even one episode, the only thing Tolkien about the show, is the names of some of the characters and that's it. The bulk of what they are doing is not canon at all, making it indeed, (fan fiction). I wonder when they plan on doing the black people genocide that must have occurred between the second and third age... 🙄 Woke nonsense will never be entertainment to me.

I don't understand what the problem is? We don't actually see Finrods death, we see that he had died and it is heavily implied by a wolf/wolves. The Harfoots were one of three hobbit breeds who eventually migrated to The Shire. The acting seems fine to me and I personally am enjoying the series.

Fingon? I think it is Finrod. Finrod is Galadrial's Brother.
Fingon is the father of Gil-Galad (who appears in the show). Fingon is Fingolfin's son and besties with Maedhors who is Faenor's son.
Finrod and Galadrial are both kids of Finarfin.
That is the guy who stayed behind to become the high king of the Noldor in Valinor.

@@gaebren9021 Guy is so convinced he's right, and he's not even talking about the same character! It certainly is Finrod Felagund, who was killed by a werewolf on Sauron's orders. You can see the marks of claws on him in the series. Fingon's a different chap, and I think would be Finrod's cousin (as Finrod's father Finarfin is his uncle).
