Nice explanation... My 1999 Suburban cranks but won't start. It has 150k miles on it and I have checked a lot of stuff. A mechanic told me that the next step is to check the chain. I am going to replace it. I will check the play this weekend as I have to take the radiator fan to be able to see the rotor...
I’d bet it’s not the timing chain. If you spray a bit of brake cleaner down the intake as it cranks see if it fires. If it does then spark, the timing chain, compression are all good. If it fires then it’s fuel so first thing to check is fuel pressure.
My 305 in my blazer doesn’t want to idle I can sit there and crank it with the throttle wide open till it catches and runs but even at wide open throttle will bearly idle if I let of a bit it dies out it’s getting plenty of fuel you can see the tbi do its job it also puffs out a lot of white smoke any guess? I changed the cts spark plugs and wire the idle controls module as well feels like she cant breath not even at wide open
Probably your distributor I had the opposite of that on my 66 something in the distributor was going and it ran fine idling and under light acceleration but you would floor it and it would just die out and send gas into the mufflers let’s just say there isn’t much muffler left but anyway I popped a new distributor I had laying around in it and it runs amazing again but I also had an issue with the carb about a month before that which I see you have tbi but could be same kind of situation some dirt got into the needle and seat in the carb and when you would turn it over it was just pouring gas down the motor you had to floor it to get it to fire and stay on the pedal to keep it running
+Seb y well... it's going to the shop to get cleaned up because I found a wiped cam lobe. So I'm going to do a mild built 350 to try to get it up and running quicker
with today oils without zinc add (zddp) is not too healthy with flat tapped cams, some times i'm thinking going with roller cam to be on the safe side...
The guy I bought it from said that he always ran with the zinc additive, but that still wasn't enough. The roller cam might be better in the long run though

How do you know if it’s not slop in the distributor shaft bearing or worn teeth? Did you pull the distributor?
It’s hard to describe, but it’s by feel. Between the rotor and the crank, you can figure out where it is coming from

My next guess would be the distributor or coil.. make sure you have spark!

looks like a nice engine for the 66...doing any other upgrades on it?
