  • Now that the truck is actually running, its time to set the initial timing of the engine. This is a fairly simple process if you have a timing light!

    I’d recommend changing out intake manifold and carb. Let it flow how it wants, once I swapped everything over it was a night and day difference. Pretty inexpensive as well

      That truck is long gone, my wife and I adopted 5 kids and priorities changed lol but you are absolutely right. I did put a new intake and carb on it before it left and it still runs great ( sold it locally)

    set your initial idle and timing in gear with brake applied or parking brake or against a curb or pole. the engine will idle smoother after the vacuum advance is reconnected to the hose.

    • @FEDERALBOYSENTERTAINMENT

      So put car in drive are reverse with brake then set the timing is that correct I been having problems when I put in drive are reverse sometimes car cuts right off have to give it gas to stay running are when I give it gas sometimes has a stumble before take off thanks

      @@FEDERALBOYSENTERTAINMENT start by checking that, if that yields results then you’ll need to replace said gasket/gaskets. If that does not solve problem I would look into idle mixture screws, timing, but what you describe sounds a bit like a vacuum leak somewhere.

    What does initial timing matter if you you get pinging with too much advanced timing when the advanced timing from the distributor kicks in? Seems like total timing is more important.

    • @MrJonny2277
      @MrJonny2277 3 года назад +3

      Yeah, would think he would of at least check it while the light was hooked up lol. Idk guess was on a hurry cause it was getting dark? Probably should of tightening distributor bolt when was done, unless I missed it, was hard to see anything without any light.
      ANYWAYS, Setting Initial timing, is more of a base line or starting point to get engine started and running and timed at idle. Then you want to check total advanve by increases rpms to around 2500 to 3000 and check the total advance around 36 to 38° or so and fine tune until engine is happy and running smooth. At higher rpms the more it'll advance to compensate with engine speed..
      He also probably should of said something about tightening the distributor bolt when done lol and maybe checking that the rotor is point to #1plug wire at tdc but guess if he didn't change it so figure no need. But if someone didn't know to make sure it was #1 plug wire or wires were off, it would be a big freaking headache. But there's are tons of youtube videos on it. You could always watch some videos that covers it. Just seemed like you would cover everything at once while you are taking the time to do it, maybe lol.

    I traded a 95 civic and 01 accord for an 85 chev 2500 4x4 oil was mixed with water previous owner changed head gasket and didn't adjust anything so I adjusted the valves and put the covers back on with fresh oil and filter and its spitting oil out on the left side exhaust hmm maybe readjust them again and let it run for awhile because it has a muffler so let the carbon just shoot out?? • @mechanicsinherited7079
      @mechanicsinherited7079  2 года назад

      @@LeroyJenkins666. I would do a leak down test on the engine. I would also pick up a "spill free funnel" from a parts store. The funnel will have radiator attachments. Once hooked up, fill the funnel full of coolant, and start the truck. If you get bubbles in the funnel while the engine is running. Then you have exhaust fumes getting into the coolant. Which very well could be a bad head gasket.

I did a fresh tune up including oil spark plugs and wires. What do you think it’s failing? TIA!
