  • ~~ Announcing: the Littlebear Axe Challenge! ~~
This is going to be a bit of lighthearted fun and I'm looking for some community interaction.
    To enter:
    - Film yourself axing out a spoon blank and record your time (more on this later)
    - Upload the video of your attempt to IGTV and tag me @littlebear_sloyd and #littlebearaxechallenge in your post / OR upload it as a RUclips video and comment the link below.
To get things started, I have posted my starting time of just over three minutes. If you can beat my time, you'll win!
The prizes will be treen by me - a spoon or a bowl - the winner(s) can choose, plus a few little extra goodies.
The competition will run for one month from the time of this post, so everyone has plenty of time. Please follow me on instragram @littlebear_sloyd to keep up with the competition as it will be run primarily over there.
I will re-post the winning video.
I will have the right to contest the final posted time. There will be bonus prizes for creative entries.
Please post your entries even if they don't beat my time! there will be a special secret bonus prize but I'm not going to tell you what the criteria is to win it, so post your entries and post again if you improve. There is no limit to how many times you can try within the four weeks!
    The rules:
    - The allowed tools: axe or axes, pencil, ruler, any saw.
    - stop cuts are allowed but you must shape your blank primarily by axing.
    - templates are allowed but not required.
    - you must draw a spoon shape and axe it out within 2mm of the line.
    - there should be no redundant thickness in your blank
    - you may spend as much time cleaning and squaring your billet as you like before starting your attempt, however all of the shaping of the spoon blank will occur after your time starts.
    - you must start your time when you pick up your billet, and finish your time when you put down your axe for the final time. The video will be un-edited with the exception of an on-screen timer if you'd like to do that, otherwise time your entry manually and write it in the description. If there's a winning time I'll be checking it vs. the video so no funny business!
    - Final rule: please be safe - this is a contest in the spirit of friendly competition and self-improvement. If you get injured in your attempt I'll disqualify it.

These are great Julian, perfect for reminding students of the process and the correct grips etc.

I accept! The trick will be to find easy wood and to avoid lopping off digits...

Luckily your cat knocking something over didn't ruin your focus and made you chop your finger xD

Hello quick question I have a chance to get an axe made but not sure what’s best for spoon work. Right handed flat grind one side or double bevel.

I like an assymetrical bevel axe but not fully a side axe. Long left bevel, short right bevel. Mine are ground concave / convex as well. I think side axes are best for hewing but not ideal for spoons.
