I've been using fluval c2 and c3 for over 13 years. My 2 C3's I've had for over ten 10yrs each. Nothing has gone wrong at all. Haven't replced a single part. Pretty much bullet proof. No lie.
I haven't tried a Fluval filter, but I've been using two Marina filters i got from chewy ($15 and around $25) and I'm really liking them. They're quieter than my air pumps and so far are working fantastically. They're also one of the easiest filters I've ever had to clean. The motor is also inside the tank on these.
I've ran Aquaclear filters for years. After all these years you would think they would design a self primed filter but the media space and the way it's designed for water to flow through the media of an Aquaclear is second to none.
This filter is very intriguing. Has the mechanical filtration like a aqueon /tetra filter but the bio like an aqua clear/tidal. I may have to check this one out for sure. Thanks Jason, Thanks for the info Man! Much Love from Milwaukee
I'm glad you reviewed this. I've had a C3 on my 29 gallon for a couple years. These don't seem to get much love in the hobby. There was a time I thought Fluval was discontinuing it because they were selling the C3 for under $20 at Pet Smart, (maybe Petco) for a short time.
For me anything Fluval for the most part is good quality stuff. One of my favorite fish companies for sure. I love their led lights controlled by app. Good stuff 👍
Like the aquaclear, if it's making noise the likely a broken or well and in need of repairs. Found out my the aquaclear on my mom's tank was broken for years making noise
I have the Fluval C2 and Aquaclear 20. I prefer the latter because I find it easier to clean, it's also less noisy. Where I live, we have frequent power cuts, but I have never had an issue with the filter starting back up as long as the water level is maintained. I have had the Aquaclear filter now for almost 7 years! 🤞
I have the C3 on my 29, Has been running for a year and half with no problems (I clean the impeller once a month) I make my own mechanical pads with a polisher also have a pre filter sponge on the intake, rinse that in tank water every other water change. Really love the filter! Oh as long as I keep my water topped off it will restart if unplugged or lose power.
Thanks for sharing, Jason! It’s not a filter that pops to my mind, but I’ll be interested to see what you think over time and how it compares to the others you have.
Great info Jason! I've been using mine for a couple of years and even showed it on my stream the other night cause I can't find them in stores. Thanks for sharing!
I have a C2 on my 10 gallon crayfish tank. Very quite. Only a couple of months so far, but so far am loving it. Because of my crayfish I am also running a Penn Place undergravel filter with a Tetra 10 gallon air pump running on each side.
I have an Aqua Clear filter on my tank (motor on the outside), and I lost power twice last weekend. Both times: one was a short period (10-12 mins), and the other was hours long (6 hours), the filter self primed, and came back on its own; without me having to fill it back up.
My number one is self priming. This looks like a well made filter but I usually "gut" mine anyway and stuff with floss, rocks, etc., though most my tanks also have sponge filters as well. Thanks for the video!
I ran a C4 for about a year and a half. In 30 years of keeping fish, it is probably the most effective filter I’ve used for mechanical filtration. That said, it’s a really complex filter and that makes the cleaning just that much more involved. I found it gunked up too quick! I ultimately decided to replace it with a Tidal and I’ve never looked back. I love the Tidal so much more. I’ve even started replacing AC filters on my other tanks with Tidals and that’s the only HOB I’ll ever use moving forward.
Well said Evan. My thoughts exactly. Definitely over engineered. Works too well. If you like cleaning your filter every two days it's great. Not for me. I'm running 2 and one is in the closet. I hate them.
I've had my c2 for a few years and it's okay. I do like how there's a media basket to add extras and a bin with more media for the trickle flow. It looks pretty nice and it has an indicator for when to clean. What I don't like, the filter overflows very easily over the intake. The water stream is very powerful and the adjustment does almost nothing. The plastic pieces get brittle after some years. I've had piece of the trickle media basket break, the impeller is a bit tricky to remove and I broke it once. The water outspout has a piece of plastic you can slide off and that broke. A portion of the intake is also really hard to clean without special tools. Not a fan of the proprietary media mesh cover either. Also, that darn balance piece is so easy to lose. Overall it's not a bad filter, for the average person they'd probably love this thing.
I got 2 of them their great filters.mine are quiet dont even know their on and my power goes out here a lot they always restarted no problems even if the tank is 4 inches low it will still start up but anything lower then that it won't start back up long as u keep u tank pretty much filled up u will never have a issue with these filters restarting
i have been keeping a lot of aquaclears in my life and one problem I also had filters that have the motor inside the water, but the problem is that they will leak. I have 3 of them, two from marina, one from marineland, one marina have leaked water, but else i agree with you, great video.
Good review... Great insights on the pros and cons.. somehow HOBs aren't for me because I have power outages and can't unsee the pump in the Aquascape for the HOBs that have pump submerged... So sticking to Good old Sponge filters and canisters for now 😄
One thing I've noticed w/ my HOB (an aquaclear) is if you keep the water level high enough in the tank that it doesn't all syphon back out of the filter in the event of power loss, it won't lose the prime. That's not always possible, but when you can it's pretty helpful. That said, this looks like a fancier aquaclear!
I have the 110 fluval aqua clear on my 40G turtle tank with fish and it’s great. Keeps the water crystal clear. The flow adjustment is alright. Only complain is the adjustment for the back is horrible. That little piece that you put to twist and adjust the angle keeps falling off on mine.
Something to keep in mind is that aquarium filter gallons per hour are measured without any filter media in them so your actual GPH will be somewhat lower.
The C series filters are good. I was using 5 or 6 of them on my tanks. However, every single one has had impeller issues. After some use, they all started to rattle loudly. I've lubricated, replaced, done everything I can think of, but the noise keeps coming back. I'm down to using just one and have replaced the others with Seachem tidals.
Great vid.. Love Fluval! Can you show us how to clean the HOB filter pump? Was hard for me, All I did is removing the lil fanny thingy and sucked up the water that's inside. lol
I have that very same filter and it restarts flowing when power returns. My power goes out with almost every thunderstorm with heavy wind and rain. Anywhere from a flicker to out for hours and it's always started flowing itself. The impeller creates enough suction to prime itself.
Looks great for what I need. I'll look into this. Thanks Jason. Second thoughts I think the tidal might be a better option as I doubt I'd have the patience waiting for it to prime itself after an outtage
I’ve gone just about all sponge I do have a couple of aqua Claire’s just because they’ve lasted longer than anything else but I do wish somebody could come up with a little flapper valve for the inlet so that when the power goes out or you’re doing a water change you can shut it off without the filter draining and I will pick up prime again when the power comes back on.

Because of this the water starts to flow out of the overflow diverter unfiltered back into the tank. Based on your observations does it seem like this Fluval filter has a lot of filter bipass or does it really force the water through all the filters before it gets dumped back into the tank?
If you mean the tube that u turns into the filter container then yes it is. It has this very strange design where after the u turn the pipe ends suddenly about a inch below the water line instead of going all the way to the bottom of the filter container so that the water could actually flow through more of the filter media. From there the water flows through a small basket that is designed to hold bio media before it free flows into the filter pads. I was wrong about saying i got the 110 gallon capacity marineland. Fluval sucks. Overpriced and not dependable for me.
