Andrew, the vessel did not capsize. After colliding with the bridge columns the spans did not immediately collapse but when they did they crushed the bow of the vessel causing it to sink in an upright position, that is, resting on its keel, the position it is in to this day. Further, the vessel did not strike the "northern bridge support" - the bridge runs roughly east/west - it struck to the east of the centre span which was not damaged. The columns that were damaged were numbers 18 and 19 (I think) bringing down number 18 and collapsing the spans supported by that column. These spans were at least two spans east of the centre span which was the one the ship should have travelled through.

I went to Hobart and while I was on the ferry ride on river Derwent I never knew there was a giant shipwreck underneath us. I literally found out about this now.

This is terrifying! How do you not feel uncomfortable being in dark, murky water not able to see more than a few feet in front?

Well, the water quality has certainly improved over the years. Apparently for a few years after the accident, visibility was around 1m with a light, and pitch black without. Mind you, unless something is done to remove the zinc ore concentrate from the hold, that water quality is going to take a terminal nose dive one day. Better they get onto it sooner rather than later, while there’s still enough solid metal in the hull to work with.

Awesome to see you guys see the wreck. Would be cool to have some subtitles to show which parts you are looking at?

This is so uncomfortable to watch. Very thalassaphobia inducing. Dark murky water 😬 waiting for a giant pair of jaws to come out of nowhere
