i like the new colors. in my opinion they make Pico-8 better, and they don't derail it from the original vision of an intentionally very limited retro computer, because there's so few of them. the key to success are these restrictions: • you can't add these colors on top of the original palette. if you want to use any of the new colors, you must - for every new color that you want to use - replace a default color completely, on the whole screen • changing the colors costs tokens, and you need to document how the colors are changed and where in the code they are changed. so most projects will use the default colors because the benefit of changed colors is not so often big enough to offset these downsides
Thanks for your hard work. Man I love PICO-8. It reminds me of the days of DOS and Basic. When things weren’t so complicated. I’m a huge fan of creativity through constraints and this is perfect.
Oh yeah DOC and Basic were obvious inspirations when Pico-8 was made. Initially Zep wanted to even use Basic. But then LUA turned out to be a more modern and convenient alternative.
I saw a post a few days ago about how to make new colors by flickering the original ones every frame and I thought this was gonna be the same. I was pleasantly surpised. Hopefully we get a UI update so that we can use the new colors in the sprite editor.
Thank you for these excellent and educational videos. I'm about half way through the rogue-like series and having a blast with it. Just curious if you are aware that years ago Flight of the Conchords recorded a charity song with your catch phrase "Stuff like that." in it.
Grats on the move! I was wondering what had happened to ya! :). Are you planning to do more videos as you settle in? I miss the Pico-8 videos :D I hope everything is going well!
recently there's been news on the similarly controversial 0x808 audio channel, which was also a secret but isn't anymore. ¿what are your thoughts on that?.
You can absolutely have more than 16 colors on the screen without flickering, you just can't have more than 16 in one sprite without layering a second sprite on top when you draw
Coming from game maker and playing around with game guru scripting the rouge like series is a great start. I thin an earlier tutorial be more of a lua tutorial then pico so to say.
With the new colors and especially the sound fx effects (REVERB in 8-bit ???) he may want to change the name to pico-16. Really, what is pico-8 supposed to be now?
It's pretty fun is what it is. The "new" colors are almost 3 years old now. We haven't really observed a dilution of Pico-8s identity. It's still well in-line with 8-bit systems. The NES had a palette of like what? 56 colors?
From the looks of it, this is a "Night Shift" palette, where all the colors are much warmer and less contrasty.
That's what I thought too. Kind of like a sepia filter, or red hue filter.
It looks like reading-mode for phones * 4
"What even is Pico-8 with more colors?"
Pico-16
No, pico-64
Pico-8k real????
all that pico 8 is for the transformation is 16x16 sprites

That's not how it works. This is not an NES.
whoa!
hi !
I love your tutorials !
If you have time, can you make a new tutorial a bit more easy than the rogue like tutorial?
sorry for my bad english
Yeah I'm planning to do an entry-level tutorial next. Stay stuned!

imagine being excited about being able to render a couple more colors. what's wrong with you people?
Somebody who uploads speedrun videos should be able to empathize with the satisfaction of coming up with creative solutions within tight constraints.
