This information is interesting. I have always been confused about topo maps.
My dad, an engineer and Veteran of WII who had to use this information in France, Germany and other places there just to know where they were - behind enemy lines or not, tried to explain these lines and elevations to me unsuccessfully. As a visual person, I needed pictures to correlate lines on the maps. You have used lines , pictures and explanations and put these puzzle pieces together for me - THANKS!

Fantastic explanation, simplicity at its best. As an educator I can appreciate the fact that formal education is not enough, especially when it comes to survival; you have to have that practical hands on experience. As a novice metal detector, I got lost in a canyon last year by losing my bearings and then my composure. It was terrifying! All common sense went out the window as the fear rushed up the back of my neck. Instant fever rush! Next thing I knew I was running full out... I really lost my cool. My daughter bought me a Garmin tracker and Marine strobe light as a precaution. Thanks for the great video, pardon my story, just wanted to share.

Thanks! Heading out to Reflection Canyon in Utah and in case my GPS dies, I'll be able to navigate through your refresher course here. Actually, I'll of course be bringing a map, so I'm looking forward to stopping every once in awhile, taking out the map to study it and compare it with my surrounding terrain. I'm really looking forward to that. Thanks again.

it makes sense in WW1 pilots were the main scouts and navigators, so their point-of-view would be from a top-down view, with the pilots being a at a higher elevation then the natural land features around them. Thanks for sharing

Really enjoyed the video. I will be teaching this stuff to scouts very soon and have been agonizing over how to do it. As it will be for practical use, I wanted it simple and sweet for the young scouts. I want them to walk away with the simple ability to look at the map and say what is up ahead, behind and side to side for trekking. Technicalities can come later. I think I'll use this video, if nothing, but for the first picture you used with the guys head through the map.

You really did a great job. What I really like was the diagram with the flat circles and then the 3d view. Also the two photos of the little hill. Desert or swamp type areas will have much smaller indexes, maybe 10 index and 2 foot intermediates. Those maps will more than likely have supplementary contours. The contours are compiled on stereo vision 3d plotters, I made many of them.
