Slipgate Ironworks struck out swinging! 🤣
Civvie warned us. This gives me some concern for Tempest Rising.
Tempest Rising is made by Slipgate? Damn I'm sad again :(
I knew that something was wrong since I saw giant hamster ball
watch?v=0ua9F5OfS9g
as a unit of these NOD wannabes.
_Oh no... Please, by Kane, no!_
They are a bit more transparent about that one, but still gives me red flags which makes me absurdly sad(C&C is my favorite franchise and a new game good game inspired by it would be awesome)
So, now we know why Duke Nukem Forever 2001 was never made.
Dang they really did the Duke Nukem 3d to Duke Nukem Forever thing I appreciate that dedication
They did the Rise Of The Triad to Rise Of The Triad 2013 thing
They did the Blood to Blood 2 thing
They basically made Bombshell(a mediocre and boring mess) they've played Ion Fury and said "Ok guys this is too good, we must turn back to our Slipgate standards" and there we go.
Here comes the calvary
Here comes the Calgary
Here comes the Cadbury
Here comes the calzone
jesus: fuck
Surely she MEANS to say calvary though :P It's a twist on the clichéd "here comes the cavalry" thing.
Just like Duke Nukem Forever, this game tries copying gameplay formulas of other influential games like Half-Life and Halo while ignoring it's own unique style.
And for some reason, the developers didn't learn a thing why everybody hated that game. Those who forget history, are doomed to repeat it.
THIS!
The curse of Duke Nukem Forever is upon us again
Better said would be the curse of a sequel to a build engine game
Slipgate Ironworks? More like SHITGATE DOESN'T WORK!!!
Here comes the celery
Here comes the caviar!
@@underthemayo Here comes the cranberry!
How can you say that... with such casualty!

under the mayo can finally make dmc2 jokes 😂i love that
This is a real shame since Ion Fury was the first Build Engine game in 20 years and it rocks.
What this reminds me of is how Blood II is to Blood. Interesting weapons, better graphics, came out completely raw.
Waiting on Civvie to completely destroy this with Gordon clips
He said he won't review it because he already said it's gonna suck in demo from Vibe Check vid, so there's no need for any further discussion and he hoped people won't buy it the very moment demo happened
@@Eric_Nomad_Hixtone Shame, I was waiting on another Rawpocalypse
I had to constantly do a double take during this video because in 480p the environments look like they're ripped straight out of different franchises. I thought I was looking at Halo, Roboquest, Borderlands and Half Life at certain points.
I’m glad to finally be seeing people tear into Slipgate Ironworks, they’ve been putting out awful release after awful release and nobody seemed to care for the longest time
I thought wrath was good. Not great but good.
@@underthemayo Wrath is definitely much better than some of Slipgate’s other releases. It’s a flawed game in some ways but at least it doesn’t make me feel shame having purchased it like Kingpin Reloaded or Graven
Graven was such a mixed bag. Love the art direction and world building. Even some of the combat and interactivity. However, it just wasnt enough for me not to hate everything else about it.
@@reggiereg2064I honestly feel the same about Graven. What bothers me most about it isn’t the game itself, it’s what it could’ve been.
Stinkgate Ironworks does it again. Hype players up with nostalgia bait and then shit the bed while taking your money. Great
So sick of this trend of so-called retro games basically just ripping of an aesthetic while not comprehending what made the original ones charming at all.
Time after time it's proven that the most important person on the team is the one who can say "enough! We need to scale down this thing hard!"
Gotta say I agree.
From what i've gathered from my doom modding experience, I think the keys would be:
To have a very clear vision of the project from the very beggining to prevent switching or becoming other stuff halfway in. Stuff changes overtime, but doing a "we started as an fps and now we switched into a dating sim because it's better for the story" leads to bunch of lost time.
Prototype your game mechanics very early in development, that way you can test which think works and which doesn't. (A common practice in the industry, placeholder assets/art is suggested, no need to have completed ui, if the mechanic work, then expand on it.)
And (this one is for someone I know) you usually don't go big on your first project, gotta learn through mistakes from previous projects before going big leagues (nailing it first try, although doable, is risky in a overloaded market where there's more game on sales than time onlife to play them)
Gotta know your limits, experimenting is fine, and wanting to go big is natural, but doing both at once comes with a risk, and sucess rate is counted with one hand. (Before Daniel mullins's "Inscryption", there was a gamejam experiment called "Sacrifices must be made")
I know a thing or two about it, worked on a steam game for someone else's project for about 4 years and I ended up leaving the project because no one stopped the director into adding more features and straight up reprogramming the whole game in a different language again.
I was given the chance to learn the new language, but no way I can learn a programming language from scratch in 2-4 months, so lesson learned.
So Mayo you where the one with the "calvary" for this game! You really crucified it!
I suffer for you, my children.
My favourite review from my favourite clown.
Context: Someone at 3DRealms called mayo a clown on a discord server, so I guess he changed the thumbnail with a clown wig.
Let's all remember that the current 3D Realms that exists today has nothing to do with the 3DR we all remember so fondly. That exists today as Apogee (yeah, those guys!). The current 3DR is just the name and are closely linked to Slipgate Ironworks, I don't remember the details but both companies have the same CEO or something like that.
I was so hoping they would take the demo feedback and delay the game. But I guess this was a canon event.
So that demo footage last year really showed what we ended up getting.
I wasn't expecting the fucking dictionary to dunk on this game
That's an new low
What a shame. Truly disappointing, the first trailer was a blast and the hype was real.
They realized they had too many delays in a row and are trying to make up for it but they rush things, at least that's my theory
@@giacomogiliberti2673 Had they made this into another Build Engine game with more of what makes Ion Fury fun, this wouldn't have happened. This is honestly depressing.
It's the same thing that killed Blood
literally saw a review of this from another channel I follow, from just your title, I knew that if they gave this game a good review I should unfollow them. That's how well I trust your analysis on shooters. Also Civvie said anything from slipgate ironworks is garbage, which is really too bad because 3d realms used to be king of boomer shooters.
We thought Blood II was the rawest thing in existence, we were wrong
Hey well thanks, that's nice to know you like what I do. Definitely don't take me 100% though! There's always gonna be someone who likes something. And I try to keep in mind when something just "isn't for me". Sadly I don't think this game is good from any perspective.
Yeah, 3D Realms was on top. But then Duke Nukem Forever, took forever. And it was all downhill from there.
You could tell from that demo last year that it would be calvary.
Pure calvary
Looks like Daikatana all over again...
Blood 2
Man, that's a shame.
What a shame.
Ion Fury was a good game. What a rotten way to get a sequel.
First Graven now this, whats wrong with 3D Realms lately?
I have no idea. I'm not sure if it's developer incompetence or executive meddling that lead to the failures of Graven and Phantom Fury.
Slipgate Ironworks have been known for releasing shit games, so I think the onus for these bad releases are largely on them.
That being said, 3DR could also have been making these arbitrary release dates, preventing them from fixing what needs to be fixed... but THAT being said, Slipgate also released the Kingpin "remaster"... which is STILL a huge unfinished mess....
"Bit off more than they could chew..."
With the state of their recent releases, and cancelled projects, that is the sentiment most fitting 3DRealms right now.
this game has like 30 different art-styles i swear. you could've used a recording from another game in there and i wouldn't even have known.
3DR employees are name calling folks who are being honest about this game. Yeah, not buying it.
Yeah im sure that's REALLY gonna help.
I really think they should finally close the studio and 3D realms should stop making boom shoots, they're just unable to so better off leaving the niche completely and give a way for the New Blood or anyone else literally. Also i do hope everyone in Ironworks gonna get fired and they gonna have such a stain on the reputation all of them gonna end up homeless unable to find any job ever again!
Huh regarding that weapon key thing, something I am working on has weapons types selectable 1-5 (1 Melee, 2 Kinetic, 3 Flame, 4 Rocket, 5 Battery) and then you press 6 for 1st row, 7 for 2nd row & 8 for 3rd row, I think something like this would be more beneficial but I see there are even more weapons here so the answer may not be so simple
Mayo, this might be your best opening to a video that I've seen yet. This is the kind of pettiness that I want to see when it comes to judging games that are this poorly made. I know that sometimes I may disagree with you on things, but I'm always here for your perspective, and I'll be damned if you didn't come through on this one.
Well thank you!
The only deal breaker for me seems to be the glitches and bugs (that weapon upgrade breaking one sounds especially annoying), if they fix those I might consider getting it
Everyone is telling you to play... Black Mesa.
I think if the ceiling fan gameplay was a bit more immersive, it would be a 10/10. Think about it. You pull a chain, and you don't know/remember which one is a Fan or Light. Then you pop the long chain and it gets caught in the fan. You quickly put your hand up to stop the fan before it rips the chain, and you take damage.
Damn, that'd be 10/10
I feel like a video on Ion Fury Aftershock, the expansion to Ion Fury, would wash away the foul taste of this game.
Isn't this made by the same dudes working on that fan game installation 01?
I remember hearing a number of them working there.
1:44 And they can't even be bothered with making the "Warthog" feel like a "Warthog", Advent Rising at least made a solid attempt at getting the 'Hog feel for its "Warthog" Sections and the "Warthog" vehicle even if it looks goofy. This may be more visually similar to a 'Hog but mechanically it can't be further from a Warthog, I can tell just from watching that this doesn't _drive_ like a 'Hog.
Biggest disappointment of the year for me. Ion Maiden (sue me) was so good that I felt like they would have been more sensible with a sequel effort, as I hate shitting on boomshoots.
I'm quite annoyed that this isn't great. On the plus side hopefully they'll fix it before it comes to console (which I'm on) and I'll knab it on sale
Under The Calvary
I downloaded this game and the controls were bugged right out the gate, literally can't progress through the first door or rebind any keys.
The trailers made this look like that lost/and found Duke Nukem Trailer Tech Demo from the early 2000s. That was the vibe they were going for it seems and I really wanted to try it out. It's shame the execution is all over the place.
Weapon selection makes sense if you always hit the same button combo to get the same outcome. "4-4-4" always gives you the third weapon in the "4" category. The idea of making it switch to the "next" weapon in the same group sounds bewildering to me. Its been a while but isnt the shipped style the same was CS does it? Isnt the proposed style something that made people hate Redfall?
At most it sounds like something that couldve been a gameplay option.
Mayo really is the king of having emotionally charged clickbait titles for videos, but then once you click the video, he gives a thoughtful and fair critique.
Strong opinions and feelings lead to strong titles, what can I say. This video is a warning to stay away. *sigh*
amazing intro
The thing is, I don't really have my ear to the ground on what's coming out. I keep to myself. And then I just get surprised by new titles that everyone has been following for ages already.
Weapon selection in the game reminds me of how Half Life 2 handles it for controllers/steam input. As long as ui is on screen it'll scroll through the weapon category, but if it's not it'll select the first weapon of that category. Also because of the layout is in a "+" shape, if you press the opposite-sided weapon category it'll scroll backwards while the ui is up making selection on the opposite side more tedious then it needs to be.
Just got home from work, made food, took a shower.. and Mayo just uploaded a video.. bliss
regarding weapon selection: sometimes I wonder if current generation of FPS devs cared to play classic DOOM. Switching between shotgun and the SSG works exactly like how you describe it. quickswitch in Half-Life also works like that I think.
This is the second indie FPS game that are showing some bad bugs. Hope 3D-Realms see these problems, and make a updated patch for this. Even Graven needs the fixing too.
Wish Voidpoint had developed this game.
They didn't even fix the demo. I might play after the bugs get fixed but even then I'm not sure. The game sounds like what you get if Duke Nukem Forever 2001 actually got made. I will definately be playing Aftershock soon over playing this. I'm playing Ion Fury a 3rd time and I still love that game.
I really did want this game to turn around but the fact they made it months after the demo was already a bad sign.
Us 'clowns' and 'idiots' of the world really have it rough when we just want to play a game as loved by it's developers as it is by it's fans, but alas, here we are.
Any chance you would review Black Mesa?
I think looking at this studios past and that demo they put out we knew this wasn't going to be a smooth release well never mind another game on the pile called come back next year and see how it's going, what a shame.
When 3D realms made a comeback...they came out swinging..unfortunately they seem to have gassed themselves out already 😂😢
Im in the software industry and these buys are very obvious whats going on in company, tight deadlines, last month requirement list, senior colleagues leaving etc
soon as i heard calvary i was like 'thats the wrong word'
The whole weapon switching/menu issue u mentioned is a huge gameplay flaw 👎. They need to patch that immediately.
Whenever I play games and find stuff like this, I think "how did no one else bring this up already?"
Oh boy another unfinished 3DR game! Not buying any more games from them after Graven, Wrath’s cut features, and Kingpin’s terrible remastwr
Wrath was still a good game, but isn't worth the full price for sure.
wdym Wrath slapped
Cal & Valerie? Canary?
Oh good, Mayo is improving my english skills. Calvary is a fascinating word.
Wait, they released it?
So it's a no because there is no style meter?
I will buy it anyway. Appreciate the effort. Despite or being bad. Tripple AAA are worst
If appreciating effort like this is what passes, then AA titles and the standards we have for gaming are doomed
@@danielgeronimo5538 Just the desing is worth seein to me, And I am talking about me, not saying what others have to enjoy
@@bubuasqw123I'm saying you should reconsider, sure the game might have some interesting design, but these are times when even one or two people passing it off and the devs get lazy with their standards.
Besides, in games just to see is sometimes not enough, you have to feel. And how can one be sure it's really as interesting as you see it now?
Wow, I remember being hyped for it, but after the demo...I lost pretty much all interest. I didn't even realize it was out already
Omg the beginning.
Nice catch
Thanks. I'll wait 2 years to see if they fixed it all.
Civvie warned you all.
What a new team of modern devs taking over of a belove game franchise and its not good?? How surprising!!
I was excited for this game until I've played the demo but was hoping for it to improve before launch, I guess it didn't
It did improve, from what I hear. But the issues are foundational.
Well, it looked unfinished a whole while ago, apparently devs were busy with Helldivers or something
Being thrown out of the map is funny.
What a shame. I was really looking forward to this.
The other bombs in that level were at the same place you found the first. The game just only lets you carry one at a time. Still, you saved yourself further headache by simply not finishing 😆
I swear I never even noticed when I picked one up.
Can’t wait until it’s on the Nintendo switch!
That weapon selection systems would make me scream in frustration.
I really wish they sat down and looked at games with this level of interactivity and asked what went wrong and what was done correctly by other people. Alot of stuff should have been cut or altered when they planned on making this game. There are so many games that would have been better if they were planned out more thoughtfully.
Caviarly
Civvie has spoken, and it became true....
I saw his video after I started my review. I was like "it used to be worse???"
It's a shame you didn't make it to the later levels, as they could have birthed some truly epic rants
Man at that point I didn't want to ruin my day anymore that I already had. This video had become negative enough at that point and I just wanted to focus on happier things.
@@underthemayo you know a game is bad when it sounds like you're describing the effects of emotional trauma 🤣
Well, at least we learned what calvary is
That's disappointing as I love the last one and this took so long to make and they sounded so positive about it.
Who knew that a sendup of duke nukem forever wasn't a good idea
Sad to see that this game basically became Duke Nukem Forever 2 since I did enjoy Ion Fury it was like a fun nod to games like DN3D, imo both games have similar problems main one being is that they both added way to much unnecessary things in their games and while I do enjoy DNF for what is I can never say its better then something like DN3D as that game is just way superior in everyway and still holds up really well especially with the remastered edition with a extra chapter thats pretty solid, just really disappointing to see it turned out this way tbh
Here comes the calgary
Hier comes the cavalcade
Time to go back to Darkwatch
calvary here is like people saying nucular instead of nuclear
0:10 - to be faaaaaiiiiirrrrr, I've seen other things do this.

you should review max payne series
That would be cool
7:46 So like Half-Life, Sven Co-op, or many other Source and Goldsrc games? Seems simple, what's the catch?
7:51 Okay, seems decent... Still waiting on the other shoe to drop here but so far it doesn't seem bad...
8:00 And there's the catch...
8:27 What the fuck? No, seriously what the fuck?
8:40 I can already tell that this will no doubt be a source of problems...
8:44 _Oh... I can see this is worse than I thought..._
Appreciate the play by play.
Oh well, you and both Jarek once again!
Here comes the Calf Fury, the sequel to Ion Fury and Phantom Fury. Preorder now.
I've been looking forward to this!
So basically Selaco's interactivity but they forgot to include the good game alongside the wacky physics
Not even. If you shoot bottles they don't break. Security cameras can't be shot. Etc.
@@underthemayo damn had this game at the top of my wishlist until a few months ago, really sad to see how much of a downgrade it is to Ion Fury
Bruh you are funny as hell 😂😂 I love how you showed the devs how quick and easy a simple search is😂😂 damn!
It's actually just a voice acting mistake they didn't catch. The subtitles in the game correctly say cavalry.
